Spin The Wheel: Digimon Tamer (TV Only)

Because my current obsession for the week is ranking videos and one topic I could successfully do that with is Digimon, so here it is. 10 Randomly ranked Digimon Tamers (anime only)

Ai and Mako, Koji, Kari (20), Mimi (99), Ryu, Yuu, Nene, Davis, Sora (20), Eri

Spun the wheel and this is what it gave me ... This is an awful list to pick from -.-'' that's some kind of twisted luck strike there.

Eri - She is one of the franchises best written female leads , so much so that her story really overshadows the MC's Haru.

2. Mimi (99) - I was not the biggest fan of her when I was younger but after that "reboot" (despite being the only one to have a decent iteration in both) I do have a bit more appreciation for her. (also Purity is not a trait, Sincerity all the way!)

3. Koji - I've said it once, I'll say it again, this guys story goes backwards, that he has so many more reasons to be mad at the end than he did at the start but the Twins story was one of the silver linings in Frontier.

4. Davis - In any other list, this guy would not rank so high, I've never been the biggest fan of him but he has become somewhat less annoying over the years and he does have some positive traits, his whole arc rebounding off redemption seeking Ken was good.

5. Ai & Mako - The pair that created one Digimon's best redemption stories and dangerous villains. I am gutted that despite learning near the end these two saw their mistake and learned from it, Impmon giving them a second chance, we barely had any time with them. If Tamers ever gets some kind of continuation, I hope we see more of them and get them mingling with the rest of the group. (The fact he's shared is so unique.)

6. Nene - This character is ruined and overshadowed solely by the acts of the manga.

7. Kari (20) - Not a touch on the original but one of the better victims of the 2020 reboot. She had such an eerie start and then when she finally gets around to joining up with others, like everyone else, she is just sort of there, nothing changes. Gatomon has the storyline out of this pair.

8. Ryo - I can not put him higher... I just can't, simply due to his darn Mega ¬.¬ Yeah, he's scattered across games and cameo's in 02, until they gave him a home oddly in Tamers and has a TCG rivalry with Rika but you don't know how because he's been gone so long?

9. Yuu - I know very little about him, I know he was in Xros Wars, think he had more time to shine in Hunters but aside bait for Nene and girl magnet in Hunters. I don't know enough to put him higher.

10. Sora (20) - Just no, plus she like any one who wasn't Matt or Tai, she was just there, having her eps and former role stolen and not doing a great deal. I actually didn't mind her sun hat, switching to the original blue cap looks odd with her new character conflicting attire.

So, here I am watching a digimon video with my mom when she says something that makes my brain move.

Now, what digimon was she talking about, rinkmon.

And I'm liked hmmm, so i google xlr8 cause it's been a while since I've seen any Ben 10 show and I'm like :0

I mean look at them!

They both look like their about to run off and on Wikimon it states that Rinkmon came to be when elementary particles were accelerated to the speed of light so Rinkmon can accelerate to 98% of the speed of light so no digimon is as fast as Rinkmon.

And xlr8 is the speed alien in Ben 10, for give me I haven't seen Ben 10 in years and I've only watched one of the series so correct me or reblog to and info for xlr8 but my mom was not wrong.

They look kinda similar and are both some of the fastest creatures in their universe.

The US Copyright Office frees the McFlurry

I'll be in TUCSON, AZ from November 8-10: I'm the GUEST OF HONOR at the TUSCON SCIENCE FICTION CONVENTION.

I have spent a quarter century obsessed with the weirdest corner of the weirdest section of the worst internet law on the US statute books: Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the 1998 law that makes it a felony to help someone change how their own computer works so it serves them, rather than a distant corporation.

Under DMCA 1201, giving someone a tool to "bypass an access control for a copyrighted work" is a felony punishable by a 5-year prison sentence and a $500k fine – for a first offense. This law can refer to access controls for traditional copyrighted works, like movies. Under DMCA 1201, if you help someone with photosensitive epilepsy add a plug-in to the Netflix player in their browser that blocks strobing pictures that can trigger seizures, you're a felon:

But software is a copyrighted work, and everything from printer cartridges to car-engine parts have software in them. If the manufacturer puts an "access control" on that software, they can send their customers (and competitors) to prison for passing around tools to help them fix their cars or use third-party ink.

Now, even though the DMCA is a copyright law (that's what the "C" in DMCA stands for, after all); and even though blocking video strobes, using third party ink, and fixing your car are not copyright violations, the DMCA can still send you to prison, for a long-ass time for doing these things, provided the manufacturer designs their product so that using it the way that suits you best involves getting around an "access control."

As you might expect, this is quite a tempting proposition for any manufacturer hoping to enshittify their products, because they know you can't legally disenshittify them. These access controls have metastasized into every kind of device imaginable.

DMCA 1201 is the brainchild of Bruce Lehmann, Bill Clinton's Copyright Czar, who was repeatedly warned that cancerous proliferation this was the foreseeable, inevitable outcome of his pet policy. As a sop to his critics, Lehman added a largely ornamental safety valve to his law, ordering the US Copyright Office to invite submissions every three years petitioning for "use exemptions" to the blanket ban on circumventing access-controls.

I call this "ornamental" because if the Copyright Office thinks that, say, it should be legal for you to bypass an access control to use third-party ink in your printer, or a third-party app store in your phone, all they can do under DMCA 1201 is grant you the right to use a circumvention tool. But they can't give you the right to acquire that tool.

I know that sounds confusing, but that's only because it's very, very stupid. How stupid? Well, in 2001, the US Trade Representative arm-twisted the EU into adopting its own version of this law (Article 6 of the EUCD), and in 2003, Norway added the law to its lawbooks. On the eve of that addition, I traveled to Oslo to debate the minister involved:

The minister praised his law, explaining that it gave blind people the right to bypass access controls on ebooks so that they could feed them to screen readers, Braille printers, and other assistive tools. OK, I said, but how do they get the software that jailbreaks their ebooks so they can make use of this exemption? Am I allowed to give them that tool?

No, the minister said, you're not allowed to do that, that would be a crime.

Is the Norwegian government allowed to give them that tool? No. How about a blind rights advocacy group? No, not them either. A university computer science department? Nope. A commercial vendor? Certainly not.

No, the minister explained, under his law, a blind person would be expected to personally reverse engineer a program like Adobe E-Reader, in hopes of discovering a defect that they could exploit by writing a program to extract the ebook text.

Oh, I said. But if a blind person did manage to do this, could they supply that tool to other blind people?

Well, no, the minister said. Each and every blind person must personally – without any help from anyone else – figure out how to reverse-engineer the ebook program, and then individually author their own alternative reader program that worked with the text of their ebooks.

That is what is meant by a use exemption without a tools exemption. It's useless. A sick joke, even.

The US Copyright Office has been valiantly holding exemptions proceedings every three years since the start of this century, and they've granted many sensible exemptions, including ones to benefit people with disabilities, or to let you jailbreak your phone, or let media professors extract video clips from DVDs, and so on. Tens of thousands of person-hours have been flushed into this pointless exercise, generating a long list of things you are now technically allowed to do, but only if you are a reverse-engineering specialist type of computer programmer who can manage the process from beginning to end in total isolation and secrecy.

But there is one kind of use exception the Copyright Office can grant that is potentially game-changing: an exemption for decoding diagnostic codes.

You see, DMCA 1201 has been a critical weapon for the corporate anti-repair movement. By scrambling error codes in cars, tractors, appliances, insulin pumps, phones and other devices, manufacturers can wage war on independent repair, depriving third-party technicians of the diagnostic information they need to figure out how to fix your stuff and keep it going.

This is bad enough in normal times, but during the acute phase of the covid pandemic, hospitals found themselves unable to maintain their ventilators because of access controls. Nearly all ventilators come from a single med-tech monopolist, Medtronic, which charges hospitals hundreds of dollars to dispatch their own repair technicians to fix its products. But when covid ended nearly all travel, Medtronic could no longer provide on-site calls. Thankfully, an anonymous hacker started building homemade (illegal) circumvention devices to let hospital technicians fix the ventilators themselves, improvising housings for them from old clock radios, guitar pedals and whatever else was to hand, then mailing them anonymously to hospitals:

Once a manufacturer monopolizes repair in this way, they can force you to use their official service depots, charging you as much as they'd like; requiring you to use their official, expensive replacement parts; and dictating when your gadget is "too broken to fix," forcing you to buy a new one. That's bad enough when we're talking about refusing to fix a phone so you buy a new one – but imagine having a spinal injury and relying on a $100,000 exoskeleton to get from place to place and prevent muscle wasting, clots, and other immobility-related conditions, only to have the manufacturer decide that the gadget is too old to fix and refusing to give you the technical assistance to replace a watch battery so that you can get around again:

When the US Copyright Office grants a use exemption for extracting diagnostic codes from a busted device, they empower repair advocates to put that gadget up on a workbench and torture it into giving up those codes. The codes can then be integrated into an unofficial diagnostic tool, one that can make sense of the scrambled, obfuscated error codes that a device sends when it breaks – without having to unscramble them. In other words, only the company that makes the diagnostic tool has to bypass an access control, but the people who use that tool later do not violate DMCA 1201.

This is all relevant this month because the US Copyright Office just released the latest batch of 1201 exemptions, and among them is the right to circumvent access controls "allowing for repair of retail-level food preparation equipment":

While this covers all kinds of food prep gear, the exemption request – filed by Public Knowledge and Ifixit – was inspired by the bizarre war over the tragically fragile McFlurry machine. These machines – which extrude soft-serve frozen desserts – are notoriously failure-prone, with 5-16% of them broken at any given time. Taylor, the giant kitchen tech company that makes the machines, charges franchisees a fortune to repair them, producing a steady stream of profits for the company.

This sleazy business prompted some ice-cream hackers to found a startup called Kytch, a high-powered automation and diagnostic tool that was hugely popular with McDonald's franchisees (the gadget was partially designed by the legendary hardware hacker Andrew "bunnie" Huang!).

In response, Taylor played dirty, making a less-capable clone of the Kytch, trying to buy Kytch out, and teaming up with McDonald's corporate to bombard franchisees with legal scare-stories about the dangers of using a Kytch to keep their soft-serve flowing, thanks to DMCA 1201:

Kytch isn't the only beneficiary of the new exemption: all kinds of industrial kitchen equipment is covered. In upholding the Right to Repair, the Copyright Office overruled objections of some of its closest historical allies, the Entertainment Software Association, Motion Picture Association, and Recording Industry Association of America, who all sided with Taylor and McDonald's and opposed the exemption:

This is literally the only useful kind of DMCA 1201 exemption the Copyright Office can grant, and the fact that they granted it (along with a similar exemption for medical devices) is a welcome bright spot. But make no mistake, the fact that we finally found a narrow way in which DMCA 1201 can be made slightly less stupid does not redeem this outrageous law. It should still be repealed and condemned to the scrapheap of history.

So amid all of the pairing discourse being sent to this blog, one little thing stuck out to me. Someone commented claiming that AkuRoku is one of the most popular pairings on AO3 with some of the largest numbers of fics, but being the statistics nerd I am, and knowing the general trajectory of this fanbase, I decided to run some numbers and put that claim to the test.

(Actually, looking into that got me really curious about the general popularity over time of all the relatively notable pairings in KH, so I think I might eventually make a formal post compiling all my findings once I have a little more time. This is definitely informal, but it’s just an initial impression of my research thus far. Obviously, take this with a grain of salt: fanfic is only one piece of the general popularity puzzle, but it does seem to be generally understood as a decent benchmark for analysis of broader trends within fandoms.)

As a note, I measured fic numbers by date of update from April to April, year to year on AO3, so factors like game release date timing should be taken into account.

To absolutely no one’s surprise, SoRiku is the undisputed king of KH shipping. It’s been going incredibly strong since 02 but even then experienced a massive jump at KH3’s release, number of fics updated in the year multiplying nearly 6x in 2019 from where it had been in 2017. It’s slowly settled down since, but is still holding at well over 300 fics per year, even during this content drought. It’s vastly above everything else in popularity and always has been.

Most pairings have followed a similar pattern since KH3’s release: The entire fandom experienced a general jump in activity and most pairings got a boost from 2018-2020, although some more dramatically than others: Akusai fics (inclusive of fics tagged just leaisa, just akusai, or both, not counting the same fics twice) experienced a more dramatic leap than any other pairing in 2019, going from just 40 in 2017, to 183 the following year, to 350 in 2019–an 8x jump in interest. (Wow!)

Like Soriku, most other pairings have generally gone fallow since 2020, as that was the last time we all got any sort of content. (Missing Link when Nomura.)

As far as the stats for Akuroku go… Honestly a bit gobsmacked by the trends in the data. I decided to include both number of fics updated per year on both AO3 and fanfiction.net, as the fandom’s early 2000s heyday can’t really be accounted for on AO3. fanfiction.net’s numbers are a little inflated because I couldn’t honestly be bothered to separate out the infinitesimally small number of non-ship fics in the 2000s and early 2010s from the overwhelmingly large proportion of ship fics there, but if you compare how many fics that pairing used to get in its heyday from 2006-2011, it used to average out at roughly 1000 fics a year.

From 2012 on, the drop in popularity is precipitous—on both fanfiction.net and AO3. it had less than half the fics in 2012 on fanfiction.net than it did in 2010, and it’s continued to exponentially decline there since. For example, there were no AkuRoku ships updated on fanfiction.net last year, and there were only 2 updated the year before. (Noting that fandoms at large did begin to increasingly migrate away from fanfiction.net after 2012, which also explains similar but less extreme declines in otherwise healthy ships like SoRiku on that website).

It fares a little better on AO3, although it’s been eclipsed in popularity by ships that were once drastically less popular than it involving the same characters at several points—Leaisa/Akusai for example consistently had hundreds more fics than it from around 2018-2020, an impressive feat considering that ship basically didn’t exist prior to 2013~2014, although it’s gone quieter since.

AkuRoku has remained pretty much consistent at roughly 150~200 fics per year on AO3 since 2012 (a couple years have had roughly a 10~20 variance above or below that, no significant jumps either way, though it did roughly halve from a high year in 2020 to a low year in 2021) which leads me to believe that it’s… probably more off in its own world separate from what the rest of the fandom is doing than other ship communities? It doesn’t follow the same trends as ships that are more closely following the story developments in canon do.

It’s kind of surprising to see it be that much of a general drop, though. I knew it was less popular than it once was, but I didn’t realize just how much less popular it really is. 150~200 fics updated a year sounds like a lot, but if you compare it to how absurdly ubiquitous it used to be, it’s a shadow of its former self. Unless KH4 has a bunch of interactions with them and them alone, going by the trends and general attitude of the fandom, I think it’ll probably just continue to slowly lose momentum. It still has a lot of diehards, but it would appear that the majority compared to that of 15-20 years ago have jumped ship, so to speak. I have a feeling that if Roxas ever gains any significant peer relationships with different male characters in the future, it’ll likely be another nail in the coffin for it as enthusiasm for a gay Roxas ship bleeds elsewhere.

So, uh, basically… everyone who’s freaking out about it, chill? It’s probably just going to continue slowly petering out on its own eventually as the next games move away from the characterization that initially made it popular, whether anyone wants it to or not. That’s what fic trends would appear to indicate, at any rate.

Side note: out of all the pairings I’ve analyzed popularity over time for thus far, I’m surprisingly impressed by Naminé/Xion. I thought it was way more of a rarepair than it actually is. It’s not going anywhere crazy like Soriku, but it’s actually rather consistent with other moderately popular kid pairs like Roxas/Xion on AO3, and saw a jump in numbers above Roxas/Naminé of all things from 2019-2020, which I would never have anticipated. Let’s go lesbians! I guess KH3 really did change things up.

don't tell me that I don't have sources, or that trump loves LGBTQ people. You are being misled. If this doesn't change your view, regardless of everything else I have said, you are obviously too self righteous and dense to understand and recognise that there are possibly facts that are true and opinions that aren't yours that are also valid. I'm not saying I love Kamala either, because I don't and the 2 party system sucks and all politicians are garbage people. However, I would rather vote for someone who might not make good on a few good promises, rather than someone who has promised to make ny life hell on his next term.

Because 10 spins and some of the worst possible picks... so I figured I'd try again, (although not unlikely at this stage, Digimon has a big cast.) Not that, this may be my obsession this week because it is fun! So, take two and we have:

Yujin, Joe (99), Masaru, Takato, Kazu, Yoshino, Koichi, TK (02), Hiro, Matt (20)

Hiro - Our tiny, lock picking, socially detached (he had zero interest in human problems but at a drop of a hat he would dive in to solve any Digimon ones though) goggle-less boy (≧▽≦) He has grown on me as a lead and is more relatable than you first think. He's quite different to most our goggle boys and is probably the first actual pacifist, preferring to solve by talking it out over going straight to fighting. I like how he goes from not caring, to indifferent, to actually seeing the other two as friends and team-mates, no longer just other people with digimon.

2. Joe (99) - It has to be said, he is a character you grow to appreciate with age and don't realise how good he is until you are. (Ignoring later iterations/continuations as they all get butchered in one way or another.) I was surprisingly proud of him when we learned he had successfully got into medical school in last evolution after all those years, setbacks and effort he'd put it. (also dub is right on this one, his crest is Reliability, it just makes so much more sense!)

3. Takato - He is some one who has slid down the rankings over the years, I think being the goggle boy of Tamers kind of held him in his spot. He's still good, poor boy goes through one heck of an emotional rollercoaster during his stay and the fact he created his own Digimon is something most fans can relate to but I dunno, I just have found him less memorable as the years went on and tastes change I guess.

4. Masaru - Did his punching gimmick get out of hand sometimes yes, was he given way too much special treatment and screen time over the rest of the cast, yes! (he was the only one to get an official b'day and the only one to appear in the movie.) However, with all that said, I actually don't mind the guy, he does have a lot going for him and the cast around him do help prop him up, especially Tohma and Satsuma. (His dub is Axel from KH so that's a plus to!) But he screws up, he learns and he betters himself with out losing the core of his character and let's not ignore his fight with Kurata and introduction of Burstmode is just iconic Digimon!

5. Koichi - The perk of Frontiers but egads is their any Digimon Tamer across the shows that has had the deck stacked more against them than this poor guy. He's got the short straw in just about everything and no bar is low enough for his turmoil and sufferings. (Can't give details because major spoilers)

6. TK (02) - I don't remember much of his arc, just a few key scenes, such as his fight with the Digimon Emperor, trying to rescue Kari from the Dark Ocean, his rivalry with Davis and teasing him over his crush with Kari and a bizarre partnering with Cody despite having so little to do with each other? However, you do come to realise the events of 01 apparently took a greater toll on him than he lets on and the guy had such a darker side to him when it came to fighting against evil.

7. Yoshino - Unfortunately lost to the way side, overshadowed by both Masaru and Tohma and while being the oldest, is still default the big sister figure of the group. However, the handful of eps that do focus on her are good ones, even if they don't get time to be elaborated/developed on more.

8. Yujin - Let's be fair, there is no Yujin without Haru and even then the whole thing was practically an illusion, fakery to the highest level on behalf of the big bad... (´つヮ⊂) even so, since then Toei have not helped at all, I think they may have even got onboard with it.

9. Kazu - There isn't alot to say about him, Takato's buddy who just comes along for the ride and self invites himself regardless of everyone else. He does become somewhat better after the incident with Andromon and he partners with Guardromon but even then, he does practically squat all after.

10. Matt (20) - Lots of well animated battles and a dozen forms for Gabumon doesn't make a character. Despite stealing nearly as much of the screen time as Tai, there is nothing redeeming about him. Everything that made Matt, Matt in 01 is gone, he's as endearing as a piece of cardboard.

Amazon illegally interferes with an historic UK warehouse election

I'm in to TARTU, ESTONIA! Overcoming the Enshittocene (Monday, May 8, 6PM, Prima Vista Literary Festival keynote, University of Tartu Library, Struwe 1). AI, copyright and creative workers' labor rights (May 10, 8AM: Science Fiction Research Association talk, Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures building, Lossi 3, lobby). A talk for hackers on seizing the means of computation (May 10, 3PM, University of Tartu Delta Centre, Narva 18, room 1037).

Amazon is very good at everything it does, including being very bad at the things it doesn't want to do. Take signing up for Prime: nothing could be simpler. The company has built a greased slide from Prime-curiosity to Prime-confirmed that is the envy of every UX designer.

But unsubscribing from Prime? That's a fucking nightmare. Somehow the company that can easily figure out how to sign up for a service is totally baffled when it comes to making it just as easy to leave. Now, there's two possibilities here: either Amazon's UX competence is a kind of erratic freak tide that sweeps in at unpredictable intervals and hits these unbelievable high-water marks, or the company just doesn't want to let you leave.

To investigate this question, let's consider a parallel: Black Flag's Roach Motel. This is an icon of American design, a little brown cardboard box that is saturated in irresistibly delicious (to cockroaches, at least) pheromones. These powerful scents make it admirably easy for all the roaches in your home to locate your Roach Motel and enter it.

But the interior of the Roach Motel is also coated in a sticky glue. Once roaches enter the motel, their legs and bodies brush up against this glue and become hopeless mired in it. A roach can't leave – not without tearing off its own legs.

It's possible that Black Flag made a mistake here. Maybe they wanted to make it just as easy for a roach to leave as it is to enter. If that seems improbable to you, well, you're right. We don't even have to speculate, we can just refer to Black Flag's slogan for Roach Motel: "Roaches check in, but they don't check out."

It's intentional, and we know that because they told us so.

Back to Amazon and Prime. Was it some oversight that cause the company make it so marvelously painless to sign up for Prime, but such a titanic pain in the ass to leave? Again, no speculation is required, because Amazon's executives exchanged a mountain of internal memos in which this is identified as a deliberate strategy, by which they deliberately chose to trick people into signing up for Prime and then hid the means of leaving Prime. Prime is a Roach Motel: users check in, but they don't check out:

When it benefits Amazon, they are obsessive – "relentless" (Bezos's original for the company) – about user friendliness. They value ease of use so highly that they even patented "one click checkout" – the incredibly obvious idea that a company that stores your shipping address and credit card could let you buy something with a single click:

But when it benefits Amazon to place obstacles in our way, they are even more relentless in inventing new forms of fuckery, spiteful little landmines they strew in our path. Just look at how Amazon deals with unionization efforts in its warehouses.

Amazon's relentless union-busting spans a wide diversity of tactics. On the one hand, they cook up media narratives to smear organizers, invoking racist dog-whistles to discredit workers who want a better deal:

On the other hand, they collude with federal agencies to make workers afraid that their secret ballots will be visible to their bosses, exposing them to retaliation:

They hold Cultural Revolution-style forced indoctrination meetings where they illegally threaten workers with punishment for voting in favor of their union:

And they fire Amazon tech workers who express solidarity with warehouse workers:

But all this is high-touch, labor-intensive fuckery. Amazon, as we know, loves automation, and so it automates much of its union-busting: for example, it created an employee chat app that refused to deliver any message containing words like "fairness" or "grievance":

Amazon also invents implausible corporate fictions that allow it to terminate entire sections of its workforce for trying to unionize, by maintaining the tormented pretense that these workers, who wear Amazon uniforms, drive Amazon trucks, deliver Amazon packages, and are tracked by Amazon down to the movements of their eyeballs, are, in fact, not Amazon employees:

These workers have plenty of cause to want to unionize. Amazon warehouses are sources of grueling torment. Take "megacycling," a ten-hour shift that runs from 1:20AM to 11:50AM that workers are plunged into without warning or the right to refuse. This isn't just a night shift – it's a night shift that makes it impossible to care for your children or maintain any kind of normal life.

Then there's Jeff Bezos's war on his workers' kidneys. Amazon warehouse workers and drivers notoriously have to pee in bottles, because they are monitored by algorithms that dock their pay for taking bathroom breaks. The road to Amazon's warehouse in Coventry, England is littered with sealed bottles of driver piss, defenestrated by drivers before they reach the depot inspection site.

There's so much piss on the side of the Coventry road that the prankster Oobah Butler was able to collect it, decant it into bottles, and market it on Amazon as an energy beverage called "Bitter Lemon Release Energy," where it briefly became Amazon's bestselling energy drink:

(Butler promises that he didn't actually ship any bottled piss to people who weren't in on the gag – but let's just pause here and note how weird it is that a guy who hates our kidneys as much as Jeff Bezos built and flies a penis-shaped rocket.)

Butler also secretly joined the surge of 1,000 workers that Amazon hired for the Coventry warehouse in advance of a union vote, with the hope of diluting the yes side of that vote and forestall the union. Amazon displayed more of its famously selective competence here, spotting Butler and firing him in short order, while totally failing to notice that he was marketing bottles of driver piss as a bitter lemon drink on Amazon's retail platform.

After a long fight, Amazon's Coventry workers are finally getting their union vote, thanks to the GMB union's hard fought battle at the Central Arbitration Committee:

And right on schedule, Amazon has once again discovered its incredible facility for ease-of-use. The company has blanketed its shop floor with radioactively illegal "one click to quit the union" QR codes. When a worker aims their phones at the code and clicks the link, the system auto-generates a letter resigning the worker from their union.

As noted, this is totally illegal. English law bans employers from "making an offer to an employee for the sole or main purpose of inducing workers not to be members of an independent trade union, take part in its activities, or make use of its services."

Now, legal or not, this may strike you as a benign intervention on Amazon's part. Why shouldn't it be easy for workers to choose how they are represented in their workplaces? But the one-click system is only half of Amazon's illegal union-busting: the other half is delivered by its managers, who have cornered workers on the shop floor and ordered them to quit their union, threatening them with workplace retaliation if they don't.

This is in addition to more forced "captive audience" meetings where workers are bombarded with lies about what life in an union shop is like.

Again, the contrast couldn't be more stark. If you want to quit a union, Amazon makes this as easy as joining Prime. But if you want to join a union, Amazon makes that even harder than quitting Prime. Amazon has the same attitude to its workers and its customers: they see us all as a resource to be extracted, and have no qualms about tricking or even intimidating us into doing what's best for Amazon, at the expense of our own interests.

All this highlights the increasing divergence between the UK and the US when it comes to labor rights. Under the Biden Administration, @NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo has promulgated a rule that grants a union automatic recognition if the boss does anything to interfere with a union election:

In other words, if Amazon tries these tactics in the USA now, their union will be immediately recognized. Abruzzo has installed an ultra-sensitive tilt-sensor in America's union elections, and if Bezos or his class allies so much as sneeze in the direction of their workers' democratic rights, they automatically lose.

Not sure if this is the right time to ask this but how old are the prisoners now? We know what their age was going into Milgram, but what is it now? Since Mahiru was just short of her birthday

Star and I have been looking for the post where I list the characters ages and birth years though neither of us can find it at the moment I'll link it again if one of us do.

Sakurai, Haruka

Age when brought to Milgram: 17 (said he was this age but didn't really care too much about his own age. So, he wasn't sure. Actively lied about his age is one of the oldest young adult prisoners here. He is older than Mahiru, Futa, and Kotoko.)

Turned: 18 (said he was seventeen in his first voice drama meaning he would have turned eighteen the first year he was in Milgram if this were true. It's not it's fiction he made it up.) Haruka Sakurai was 22 when brought into Milgram and turned 23 during his first two months of incarceration within Milgram.

Birthdate: 06-22-2001 Lying dead bastard- 06-22-1997

Age at demise: would have been 23 (this is based on a lie and inaccurate) 27 or 28 if he passed away after June 22, 2025

Kashiki, Yuno

Age when brought to Milgram: 18

Turned: 19 her first four to five months of incarceration in 2020

Birthdate: 09-02-2001

Current Age: 23 turning 24 on September 02, 2025 (if she lives to see it)

Kajiyama, Futa

The specialist birthday boy. Had his birthday right before being taken to Milgram. His character description on the website says he's twenty. His birthday is on April 19 the first video for Milgram the MILGRAM / Teaser Movie released on April 27, 2020 after Futa's birthday.

So for him to be twenty when he was brought there means the prisoners must have awoken or been brought to Milgram on either the day the MILGRAM -ミルグラム- / PV video came out April 27, 2020 or when the MILGRAM / Jackalope’s “This is the MILGRAM” video came out on May 1, 2020.

Futa's age gives us a big hint for when the prisoners arrived within the prison in that sense.

I believe it was the former since the video released on April 27, 2020 is when we hear Es and all the prisoners for the first time. This also aligns with the beginning of the timelines as well.

Current Age: 19 going on 20 whenever their birthday is. So literally Futa's age when he did what Es/the audience found him guilty for driving someone to suicide and or instigating someone's death but not killing them directly. Man it would be awkward if they did the exact same thing at the exact same age now wouldn't it- Luckily we don't live in that timeline.

My apologies that this took a bit to answer. I had @apatchworkstar check over it to make sure I was doing the math right before posting just in case I messed up and I did with Mahiru. Now no one will ever know how. Yay always have someone check over your work when you suck at mental math and are greatly out of practice with the subject and art of it.

Hope this is helpful to you and others in some way. Honestly more art of the prisoners at the irl time ages would be great. So maybe this may lead to that or nothing but just more knowledge being out there.

Synopsis: Yoshizawa Tsuneo appears in a Tokyo high school third grade class as a new homeroom teacher. Some students in this class tend to bully their homeroom teachers until they quit, but he keeps a smile on his face, even though he is attacked verbally and physically by the students. Frustrated, these students concoct a plan to permanently get rid of him. But Yoshizawa Tsuneo won't leave, for he's after the one who attacked his girlfriend and left her in a comatose state.

Notes: I stumbled upon this one on accident, binged it in three hours and was left confused about what I just watched. It's a weird mix of lame humor, depressing thriller and cheesy horror. Enjoyable whump though, so here we are :)
