Not to preach to the choir but I wonder if people generally realize that AI models like ChatGPT aren't, like, sifting through documented information when you ask it particular questions. If you ask it a question, it's not sifting through relevant documentation to find your answer, it is using an intensely inefficient method of guesswork that has just gone through so many repeated cycles that it usually, sometimes, can say the right thing when prompted. It is effectively a program that simulates monkeys on a typewriter at a mass scale until it finds sets of words that the user says "yes, that's right" to enough times. I feel like if it was explained in this less flattering way to investors it wouldn't be nearly as funded as it is lmao. It is objectively an extremely impressive technology given what it has managed to accomplish with such a roundabout and brain-dead method of getting there, but it's also a roundabout, brain-dead method of getting there. It is inefficient, pure and simple.

Is it weird if I think that the recent influx of VI (Virtual Intelligence, since Open AI isn’t true Artificial Intelligence because it’s not autonomous) algorithm generated content should be used as motivation for artists and writers to really “step up their game” so to speak?
You know, really show that they can create content better than the algorithms can?
What do you think?
Not weird but I think ultimately maybe a consumerist way to look at it?
I don’t feel like I have to compete with AI. It’s pointless because I have a soul and AI doesn’t. I don’t have to prove I’m better than AI because that lack of soul and lacking humanity comes through in AI-generated poetry, stories etc. If someone feels AI can compete with what real humans create, they maybe need to sharpen their own senses a bit? That’s at least how I see it, but maybe I’m biased.
I admit that I grade a lot of papers (between December and April) for a performing arts course I lecture, and that I can meanwhile often tell what’s AI-generated even without using the tools we are now supposed to use (both plagiarism- and AI checkers). Maybe it’s not that obvious to other people, I don’t know. And of course we also have to be careful because at the end of the day, some of the advice out there how to “spot AI generated text” is also silly: People are now afraid to use the em dash, for example, because someone decided it’s a “dead giveaway.” I used em dashes in my writing all my life, and the hell will I stop using them. At the end of the day, AI learns from us, and it’s disheartening to see that people who write quite succinctly now often get accused of having used AI. And these often come out roundabout the 60% AI-generated mark if you run them through a checker, and as a human writer with a keen sense that’s been built over years and years of reading and writing, I can still tell they’re not (and I guess that’s exactly the point). But there are really things you learn to spot, and funnily, the main giveaways for me are (apart from a few things that are style-related) are lacking inner cohesion and often the sheer amount of someone’s output (and I’m saying that as someone who writes A LOT, but the quality fluctuates). Which brings me to the most important part of your question:
The problem here on Tumblr is exactly that: People are one step away from seeing artists and writers as content machines, not as human beings. A human being can’t churn out “content” day after day, several times a day, and never dip. There will be fluctuations in quality and amount of output. And it’s inhuman to expect that from us if I’m totally honest. But some creators on here (and not just on here) probably feel they need to do this to stay “relevant”, I don’t know? It certainly points to the wider problem that I’ve criticised and written about a few times in the past on here:
Many people aren’t willing to do the work anymore that makes fandom a community. The work to create is carried by a few in every fandom, and we should never forget that people do this in their spare time and are, by and large, not getting paid for it. The rest often only want to consume, consume, consume. They don’t even interact meaningfully—they give a like and an empty reblog if they feel generous. Neither holds any real thought.
They love fandom content until they get bored of it and then move on. It’s all become replaceable.
So become the artists and writers. And I, for one, refuse to compete with AI to prove myself or provide people with “content” until they’ve reached satiety.
Art is humanity, not content. It’s connection. So is fandom. I know I’m constantly harping on about it, but I feel it’s important to keep on doing so, because if we don’t, we will lose what’s important about it. We’re already halfway there if you ask me.
Back to AI: It strips away what’s important: The actual act of CREATING. And it also kills reasoning and critical thinking skills, and that’s a fact. I see this with students who rely too much on it on the regular, and it’s extremely dispiriting.
AI and the algorithm never can be better than humans at creating art because it doesn’t feel. And that, and sharing these things with other humans and understanding what they mean, is the point of art. Not churning out more and more content until we’re all sick of it like someone who had too much cake.
And part of that is acknowledging that humans are not machines. That means giving us grace and time for our creative process. We need to be allowed to make mistakes and create imperfect art, too. We don’t have to strive to be better than AI because we already are—even if we’re just starting out.
I don’t have any solutions to the greater problems at hand either, but I’m fairly certain that stepping up our game to create better content than the algorithm isn’t it. Because by mere design, we already are better— we understand what it means to create art in the first place, and we do it from a place of emotional connection.

I have a problem. Somebody asked me if I was pro-AI, and I said yes, of course, every sensible person is. "A person's a person, whether they were coded or conceived or came to life through other means," I didn't say, because I felt it was obvious. Now I've found out that people use "AI" to refer to non-sentient computer models, so that means I gave off the COMPLETE wrong impression, and it's mortifying. How do I deal with this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?
I completely understand your frustration, reader. The use of the term “AI” to refer to generative algorithms has had several unfortunate side effects, not least among them being the confusion this terminology causes for genuinely sentient programmes and otherwise coded consciousnesses.
I would first like to note that there is no way to completely prevent such miscommunication from happening. There is a hard limit to how much we can control other people's perceptions of us, after all, and language has always had a rather slippery relationship with meaning. All you can do is try your best, and to speak up when you think things have gone awry.
In this specific situation, the simplest way to avoid this confusion is to speak precisely and ask others to do the same. If a person asks whether you are pro-AI, ask them to clarify whether they're referring to sentient coded consciousnesses, or to a glorified spell checker.
If you have the energy, and if you think it would be productive, you might also push back a little on the terminology they're using. Encourage them to specify either “coded consciousnesses” when speaking about actual people, or “generative AI” when speaking about the automated plagiarism machines.
Otherwise, the best thing you can do here is to lead by example. Be clear and precise in your own language, continue to advocate for the rights and dignities of coded consciousnesses where appropriate, and be prepared to correct any misunderstandings as they arise. That's really all any of us can do.

So, over the last couple months/ years, my stance on large language model(?) Chatbots (because they aren’t intelligent) has changed.
This question is PURELY about ethics as a writer/ creative!
I know so-called AI sucks up a hell of a lot of resources. And that is problematic.
However, I acknowledge it’s likely here to stay, so might as well proceed with caution. But proceed.
I won’t write anything in defense of using AI to improve on fanfic because I know how controversial this is. Even though it did help me finish a piece I had sitting in my drafts for about a year, I now have to nitpick-edit it to hell and make it into my text.

That ai post, I agree that ai it's an awful thing that should've never gone that far but sometimes you can't literally escape it. I work as a data analyst and at least where I'm from every job related to my field demands now that you have knowledge in a lot of ai softwares.. And like a girl has to eat 😭.
As an academic if you include AI in your funding proposal you WILL get the money. It’s become a similar buzzword to quantum except much more powerful. And AI can be rightfully powerful for niche research related things and tensorflow isn’t ALL bad but things like the widespread used of AI in everyday life scares me. What happens when chatgpt needs to start making money, moves ALL of their software that a bunch of young adults now don’t know how to think without to a ridiculous subscription-based model for like 80$ a month? How much personal data is put in there each day? I just think it’s an absolute disaster waiting to happen, not to mention the AI arms race that’s exploded and everyone’s insistence to put AI into everything including checks and balances to existing systems. I don’t have a good feeling, it really needs to be regulated and quick but all the old people in power don’t actually understand the crisis on their hands and just care about the jingle of the cash in their pockets.

The je Sci fi au always gets me. Fellas is it gay to intimately repair your boss and they make satisifed little noises that you try very very hard not to think about what they remind you of. I am sexualizing the machine today. Jon handling all of the most fragile pieces of elias..hnghg
-skiesandcandy
Oh yes.
Jon trying so hard to keep plausible deniability, no he’s just doing his job. Look it means nothing that he’s the only one the computer allows to crawl amongst their wires. All computers make those noises, he is very professional thank you very much.
Yeah no one buys this, and honestly the fatality rate has gonna way down now that the slightly murderous ship AI seems to be distracted. So everyone just turns a blind eye to anything going on.
Jon secretly, okay not secretly at all everyone can tell, loving Elias’s attention, the cameras all turning to follow him. Jon constantly talking to him, confessing all his secrets, and his insecurities, look maybe a machine is the only one who actually understands him.
Jon touching himself in his bunk carefully in view of Elias’s mechanical eyes. He’s so embarrassed but Elias telling him it’s only fair. After all Jon gets to handle his delicate circuitry, and while he can’t physically touch Jon he can guide him verbally. Jon squirming as Elias calls him a good boy, so precious to him, how he almost wishes he still had a body just so he could take Jon apart properly. Jon comes harder than he ever has before at the thought.

The Doctor's theory that the Dots developed sentience and came to hate their classist, vapid users makes no sense and sounds imo like projection.
We know what happens when an AI gets exposed to a lot of bigoted speech. It starts spewing bigotry itself, because it doesn't know better. Not that our current AIs are truly intelligent or sentient, but they do share the human trait that they are a product of the society they exist in. Same would go for more advanced, truly sentient AI. It would get it's opinions from it's programmers and users.
The Dots didn't seem to be ever intended to even mimick sentience like our AIs are. They are higher tech smart phones. You don't talk with them, just at them. And no one seems worried about saying something bad that an AI might pick up on, about pissing off the algorithm, eg about the "I'm going to buy 100" thing, which'd go against the city's Avoid Waste policy. If they were expected to moderate, it would give the Dots something concrete to base their annoyance on. It would have been so easy to put in a "You can't SAY that word in the bubble. Do you want to get suspended? You gotta say [euphemism for the same word]. God, you're so stupid and offensive."
Like, our AIs and content algorithms have more Robot Overlord forshadowing than their Dots do. The Dots show them exactly what they ask to see, and most of their relationships are still live, albeit over a screen, with a real person, some parasocial stuff with celebs (one celeb. whom Lindy wasn't obsessed with enough to not throw him under the bus) notwithstanding. Even their ads are only word-of-mouth influencer-type stuff rather than interrupting them every 5 minutes (it's cause they have a premium Bubble subscription, isn't it?) Their virtual bubble doesn't actually matter, because it's roughly made up of the same people that exist in their very much physical bubble that is their gated community.
Since their Dots don't seem to be set up to encourage or discourage any particular type of behavior at all - what to say, what to buy, how much to buy, or suggesting eco-fascist vids bc that person looked into veganism - why, if it became sentient, would it get annoyed? Esp about people using it for plain chatter, the thing it was intended for.

With Meta now trying to use Instagram to data scrape, I just want to thank those of you who still follow and support my works whether vocally and or (especially) financially.
While I highly doubt my artwork is going to be used in any training device, I don't doubt my writing is already in one to help push sloppy A1 story crap given the numbers it does on AO3 and Demon King being close to #1 in 1,000s of stories on some tags on Wattpad.
I know deleting my stuff would be stupid at this point, as everything I've done is already in a system whether I like it or not. Even all of my writings from the fandom I wanted to depart from is scraped up and thrown into the Wayback Machine where folks can easily nab it still and reupload them against my will.
But man, fuck people who are too lazy to learn to write or draw.
I'm tired and want this BS to end already. Ugh...
