Queen of the Damned, by Anne Rice: tragically i have discovered i am not an anne rice girlie. what the FUCK are you on about anne

i don’t respect this one enough to properly capitalize it: mammoth book of dieselpunk, edited by sean wallace: sort of comforting to know this 2015 cover was lovingly hand-made by someone fucking around with photoshop and not AI. forgot that dieselpunk is mostly jerking off about WWII. unfortunately a lot of these short stories were not good on a technical OR story level and were incredibly racist. i don’t think this book cracked the code on the appropriate time to call a young white woman exiting a factory “she looked like a little old Asian man”. and this wasn’t even the worst racism in the book!!! there was exactly one i liked: “This Evening’s Performance” by Genevieve Valentine was about the last human actors where all others have been replaced by automatons, and the character work was lovely. plus it had a defined beginning middle and end and a fun ending. literally everything else in this book was not very good. and for that reason it will go back to the used bookstore.

going through some sort of brain time as evidenced by the fact i cranked out the part of the cross stitch that has previously taken me months in two days. the buildings on this incarnation of the Bless This Wretched Hive of Scum and Villainy sampler (for me this time) are not quite done, so who’s to say if this will actually take me several months to finish.

the berries and cream is a pi day Numerals of the World pattern from @mathysphere , not sure if I love this color combo on black and i feel that the color runs are perhaps not quite long enough in this specific flavor variegated floss, but we’ll see. it was the closest available colorway to the bi flag but it’s coming off more 80s than i want. perhaps i will do each line of numerals in a different pink or purple or blue? this will eventually be turned into a patch for my jacket so i want to really nail this lol

An Expressive person who seems to have not lost their childhood wonder with this and his intelligence helping create interesting inventions. Being taken in by S.T.Y.X at a young age they have grown close to the Shrouds seeing them as his own family but life before S.T.Y.X is something they rarely talk about.

Iris is a mischievous one and considered bit of an odd ball of Ignihyde due to being way more social than others in the drom. Despite that Iris is someone with survivors guilt due to what happened to his family and doesn’t feel like he can really talk about private matters given that his main form of communication is his tablet. Living in S.T.Y.X they think someone could hack into his tablet or could take whatever he wrote down. This makes him have trouble explaining negative emotions

Highly observant paired with his good memory makes him excel with book smarts but street smarts are pretty lacking.

Iris is mute so he communicates from a tablet, writing or sign language (In the game sense the voice would be coming out of the tablet, what he’s thinking/signing, If Iris is writing the other person will be reading what he wrote)

Can drain the life energy out of any living thing he touches. When in use Iris will see a bottle slowly draining than represents how much energy is left in that person. Once it’s completely empty the person will die but If Not even if there’s a single drop left said person will feel extremely tired and weak depending how much was drained recovery is also dependent on this.If Iris is upset he can speed up the process.

One of his friends is from Pomefiore is named Yvonne and she basically just claimed them on site. She does his nails using them as a guinea pig for new designs but Iris likes them so doesn’t really care as long as she keeps them short.

Started taking an interest in machines while look at some of Idia’s old blue prints and was given some of the unfinished or failed projects to tinker with. When Ms. Shroud learned about this she hoped on the opportunity to teach them more.

Their table was broken by people in an attempt to bully them during his first year and Iris got incredibly sad because the Shroud parents gifted it to him for getting into NRC. The others were pissed hearing what had happened but first they repaired the table with a bunch of new upgrades.

Has met Og!Ortho and was pretty confused when Idia presented humanoid Ortho. Honestly he was pretty terrified at first but Elara told him that the Ortho were 2 different people.

Iris isn’t afraid of needles just because of what happened to his father but also getting blood taken from him

Listens in to gossip but not one to go around saying things.

Fallon is like his non official girlfriend ( everyone thinks they’re already dating)

Backstory

Iris was born into a similar research organization like S.T.Y.X. His father was teacher for the other kids and his mother studied in ancient magic.

When Iris was 5 he developed his unique magic while holding a plant seeing some kind of bottle that was draining. When the plant ultimately whittled away he was devastated crying to his parents about what happened. They were shocked and did their best to help Iris understand his magic given that their both magic less. During that time Iris caught the interest of the doctor who is in a different part of the facility offering to study Iris abilities. The parents refused getting a weird feeling from said doctor.

Over the next 3 years the doctor would send people to hover around Iris. The random staff trying to get to know him. They would also unfortunately use the fact Iris is mute to not be able to yell for help. This started to make them grow more and more scared of leaving their parents side. During that time their mother disappeared after going on a work trip leaving just Iris and his dad.

Travis’ Death

A bit after Iris mother’s disappearance , Travis decided to speed that it was time for him and Iris to leave. The doctor was going to do anything to take his son. But the doctor had to plan too.

When they were leaving Iris saw a figure

The doctor stabbed his father with some needle and tried to drag him away. He used his unique magic, he had to get away from that man. Iris just wanted to weaken the man but from the distress he didn’t pay attention to the bottle draining quickly. Once the doctor let go he ran back to his father

With his father what ever the doctor injected into had his dad in pain. They tried to get to the place where they needed to go but Father couldn’t make it. The pain was unbearable , he was coughing up blood and he couldn’t move anymore so Iris used his unique magic to see if his dad could survive. The bottle was less than half full and was draining without Iris even doing anything.

“ It’s not your fault Iris” his father said struggling to embrace his son. “ remember none of this happened because of you, you’re the most precious person to us”. As the bottle kept draining Iris decided to use he UM so that his father wouldn’t have to die in pain.

S.T.Y.X

On the day they were planning to leave S.T.Y.X came as they found disturbing evidence that was happening. During this Iris was found crying clutching on to his father.

The Staff couldn’t get through to Iris mainly due to rough way he was bought there and getting his stuff taken. He refused to do anything crying over his family until Mrs. Shroud came back due to her reminding him of his mother Iris slowly started to communicate.

Fortunately she gave back most of his possessions

TRUST FALL TUESDAY

We have a roof! I'm amazed at how quickly the horde moved in and got the job done. Last night, we had a thunderstorm pass over to ensure that the roof was working okay. Luckily, the insurance pays for the cost of the thunderstorm.

Today they're supposed to install the downspouts and replace the siding. It took two years of dealing with bureaucratic nonsense just to get a week or two of actual work done. SMDH.

This crew did a better job than the concrete guys. They cleaned up after themselves, including rolling their super magnet around the property and picking up random nails and screws. We double checked, you don't want a Lulu paw finding them for you.

This is taking twice as long to write. I installed the Grammarly extension to edit punctuation and such in my books, but now we argue every time I type a sentence. "No, that's not the right word!" "If you upgrade, we can fix that paragraph for you!" It also has a love affair with commas. It wants me to, add, them, everywhere.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to add some more commas.

But transhumanists typically imagine super-intelligent spiritual machines, far smarter than humans. It’s a worship of intelligence. With Accelerationism, at least in Land’s case, I get the feeling it’s more a misanthropic hatred of the human condition and a desire to annihilate consciousness and replace it with the machine. It’s philosophy as modish death-wish.

Tariffs, another chaotic venture of the barely four-month-old Trump administration, are set to rollick every sector of the economy and nearly all the goods and services people use across the world. But tariffs could also cause the tech in your phone and other devices you use every day to stagnate as supply chains are hit by the rise in costs and companies scramble to balance the books by cutting vital development research.

Let’s get a couple important caveats out of the way here, starting with the possibility that the US might just come to its senses and back down on tariffs after all. President Trump promises he won't, of course, but he has now enacted a 90-day delay on higher tariffs for all countries except China, which has had its tariffs hiked from 34 to 145 percent.

While the tariff reprieve may ease pressures elsewhere, it is terrible news for Big Tech, which has supply chains that rely heavily on Chinese companies and Chinese-made components. Some companies have already gotten very creative about trying to dodge those additional costs, like Apple, which Reuters reports airlifted about 600 tons of iPhones to India in an effort to avoid Trump’s tariffs.

Whether tech leaders more broadly can yet negotiate special exemptions that allow their products to swerve these costs remains to be seen, but if they don’t, sky-high tariffs are likely to limit what new technologies companies can cram into their devices while keeping costs low.

“There's absolutely a threat to innovation,” says Anshel Sag, a principal analyst at Moor Insights and Strategies. “Companies have to cut back on spending, which generally means cutting back on everything.”

Smartphones in particular are at risk of soaring in price, given that they are the single largest product category that the US imports from China. Moving the wide variety of manufacturing capabilities needed to produce them in the US would cost an amount of money that’s almost impossible to calculate—if the move would even be possible at all.

The trouble tariffs cause smartphone makers will come as they try to battle rising costs while making their products ever more capable. Apple spent nearly $32 billion on research and development costs in 2024. Samsung spent $24 billion on R&D that same year. Phone companies need their devices to dazzle and excite users so they upgrade to the shiny new edition each and every year. But people also need to be able to afford these now near essential products, so striking a balance in the face of exponentially high tariffs creates problems.

“As companies shift their engineering teams to focus on cost reductions rather than creating the next best thing, the newest innovation—does that hurt US manufacturers?” asks Shawn DuBravac, chief economist at the trade association IPC. “Are we creating an environment where foreign manufacturers can out innovate US manufacturers because they are not having to allocate engineering resources to cost reduction?”

If that’s how it goes down, the result will be almost the exact opposite effect of what Trump claims he intended to do by implementing tariffs in the first place. Yet sadly it’s a well-known fact of business that R&D is one of the first budgets to be cut when profits are at risk. If US manufacturers are forced to keep costs low enough to entice customers in this new regime, it’ll more than likely mean innovation falters.

“Rather than focusing on some new AI application, they might want to focus on reengineering this product so that they're able to shave pennies here and pennies there and reduce production cost,” DuBravac says. “What ends up happening is you say, ‘Ah, you know what? We're not going to launch that this year. We're going to wait 12 months. We’re going to wait for the cost to fall.’”

Sag says that a lower demand—likely caused because people will have less money as we potentially careen toward a recession—also leads to a slowdown of the refresh cycle of a product. Less people buying a thing means less need to make more of the thing. Some products may get to the point where there is just no market for them anymore.

He points to product categories such as folding phones, which after six years of adjustment and experimentation at high price points have finally started to come into their own. The prices have come down as well, meaning folding phones are nearly at the phase of being at an attractive price point for more regular buyers.

It has been rumored that Apple has a folding phone close to debuting, but who knows how that plays out in a world where Apple is subject to the same trade tariffs as everyone else with a heavy reliability on China production? A complicated or potentially risky device might be delayed, or be deemed too ambitious, because tariff costs forced budgets elsewhere.

Mail Services Mod — gives you the capability to mail gifts to NPCs, as well as mail off your tools for upgrade and receive them from Clint once they're done.

No Clip Mode — Unsure how this wasn't on the list previously. Allows you to walk through anything, including map boundaries. Very useful when you have a ton of mods and have the occasional conflict.

On March 14, 2025, the Trump administration issued an executive order that called for the dismantling of seven federal agencies “to the maximum extent consistent with applicable law.” They ranged from the United States Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, to the Minority Business Development Agency.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services was also on the list. Congress created the IMLS in 1996 through the Museum and Library Services Act. The law merged the Institute of Museum Services, which was established in 1976, with the Library Programs Office of the Department of Education.

By combining these two departments, Congress sought to create an overarching agency that could more cohesively and strategically support American museums and libraries. The agency’s mission, programs and funding have been reaffirmed through subsequent legislation, such as the Museum and Library Services Act of 2003.

What does the Institute of Museum and Library Services do?

The agency provides financial support to a wide array of cultural and educational institutions, including art, science and history museums, zoos, aquariums, botanical gardens and historic sites. Libraries of all types – public, academic, school and research – also benefit from the agency’s funding.

Through grants, research and policy initiatives, the IMLS helps these institutions better serve their communities.

In the 2019 fiscal year, for example, the IMLS awarded funds to libraries in Nebraska to support economic development in 30 rural communities. The project created rotating “innovation studios” in local libraries and provided residents with tools, instructional materials and programming to foster entrepreneurship and creativity. More recently, IMLS awarded a grant to the Hands On Children’s Museum to develop a toolkit that museums across the country can use to support families with relatives who are in prison.

For libraries, the IMLS might fund technology upgrades, such as virtual reality learning stations, AI-assisted research aids or digitization of rare books. The agency also pays for community programs that take place in libraries, from early childhood reading initiatives to workshops that help people land jobs.

Without this support, many institutions will struggle to hire and retain qualified staff, leading to fewer exhibitions, stalled research and reduced educational outreach.

The consequences would be particularly severe for small museums and rural museums, which lack the fundraising capacity of larger urban institutions. They’re often the only sources of cultural and historical education in their regions, and their loss would create cultural voids that cannot easily be filled.
