Hi,I feel like I'm being gaslighted into thinking that AR wrote Marius & Armand"s relationship in a positive light? That wasn't my impression at all. Am I mistaken? I ask you this because you seem to have good Armand takes.

Hm. I do consider the vampire chronicles a study in power, abuse and sexual violence, personally. the books often take advantage of elaborate metaphors and heightened violence to do this and the different perspectives sometimes distort the narrative to either reveal or obfuscate abuse so they’re not always straightforward which can sometimes complicate interpretations. the victims have incredibly complex and realistic reactions to the abuse they face.

so where I approach this from is - ‘they said a child had died in the attic’ -> opening line of all time to me. particularly in terms of how TVA is concerned with exploring csa + the narrative structure of armand’s history in the book being bracketed by chapters which involve him trusting his children into marius’s care only for marius to betray it and every single principle he stands for to turn them (in TVL he advises lestat to allow people to live full human lives before turning them while confessing that he failed armand by not giving him the same grace) in order to entrap armand by establishing a bond with benji & sybelle that can never be severed. this is specifically because armand rejects the invitation to resume a domestic relationship with him in the first chapter of TVA. this generally sets the tone for how their relationship plays out over the course of the book. ultimately it’s also narratively important that armand is unable to fully come to terms with the abuse marius inflicts on him and is able to express how betrayed and angry he feels only when the bodies at stake belong to people he cares for very deeply - he’s able to better articulate his feelings through secondary subjects who’re similarly abused, i.e. namely sybelle and benji (and lestat! he feels very deeply about gabrielle’s neglect of him).

that said I cannot emphasise enough that I feel it’s impossible to interact with renessaince venice without the historical context for how sexual relations were organised at the time- and homosexuality was practiced almost exclusively through pederasty. anne is extremely conscious of this - she rarely shies away from examining how power differentials play a role in generating conditions where abuse is fostered. it would be antithetical to the premise of the vampire chronicles to do so. I think people may often find it distasteful that she eroticises dynamics which feature abuse but it works for me because I find it to be brutally honest and prefer to see depictions of abuse that encompass their complexity - so although this post is about lolita I do always come back to it when I try to express why TVA being an erotic text doesn’t particularly bother me (and speaking of lolita. I do also like to make a point about the very intentional ways in which immortal humbert humbert marius chooses to identify armand - armand/dolores being ignored in favour of amadeo/lolita which is a sexual identity that marius specifically bestows).

I talk a bit more about TVA & armand’s complicated feelings about the abuse he experiences here although it was typed out very hastily and I think this conversation between marius and armand from an initial draft for TVA where armand makes very confronting statements is incredibly revealing about anne’s thought process while she was writing their relationship.

Flint is obviously queer, but I tend to view him as bisexual -- when he first becomes entangled with Miranda, there is absolutely no reason for him to do it other than wanting to. It's an objectively bad idea. She's a married woman and he's working for her husband, and despite what Miranda had implied, he hasn't actually confirmed yet that Thomas would be okay with it. He kisses her because she's beautiful and incredibly charismatic and he wants to do it.

Thomas, I feel a little more inclined to view as gay, with his sexuality maybe a factor in his and Miranda's arrangement (wherein she can fuck other people), but he still clearly respects her and loves her dearly. She's someone who understood and supported him before essentially anyone else, and there's a huge amount of fondness in their relationship.

Thomas and his goals guide all of what Flint does later, but Miranda isn't a lesser part of the equation or a third wheel. For years before they met Flint, Miranda was Thomas's Person, and for all the years after Thomas, she's Flint's. They both truly love her. She is deeply vital to both those men and to their relationship with each other. Even if Thomas/Miranda wasn't romantic, it's clearly strong and loving, and they're both deeply important to Flint.

So I'm kind of confounded to see that Thomas/Miranda/Flint has less than half of the works on ao3 that Thomas/Flint does. Like -- why is that? It can't all be from when the fics are set. They can share him, guys.

Were farmers like Robert Martin considered gentry? One on hand they are technically landowners but on the other hand they worked for their keep, even if it was on their own land - so they can also be considered working class people right?

Also, when Gilbert married Helen who had been gentry previously no one around them seemed to have a problem and everyone wanted it to happen. Or did Helen's exceptional circumstances exempt her from these social rules ?

There is a lot incorrect here Nonie so let me make a bunch of corrections first.

Robert Martin from Emma is a tenant farmer. He does not own land. I believe the richer tenant farmers are in a slightly higher class called "yeoman farmers gentleman-farmers" and they tried to mimck the gentry (eg. dress similar, better education, etc.) but they would still be working class and not associate with the gentry socially. The Martins also operate the mill, which would be lucrative.

Gilbert Markham from The Tenant of Wildfell Hall does own his land and he is likely considered a gentleman yeoman farmer. He associates with the lower gentry, the clergyman of the town and the squire (gentry) in his area, but that's also a very small neighbourhood and Lawrence is not an equal.

Also, Gilbert is opposed! He himself thinks he isn't worthy of marrying Helen once he discovers how wealthy she's become, Lawrence is opposed based on class (the smack didn't help but it's class-based opposition), and Helen is worried about the reaction of her aunt if I recall correctly. Helen is in a unique position because as a widow she isn't really beholden to anyone. If she was nineteen again, her father could have stopped her (if he cared to). Sometimes there were clauses in wills to prevent widows from remarrying or they would lose some money but that doesn't seem to be the case for her.

Edit: I might have the terms gentleman-farmer and yeoman mixed up, but the distinction is between owner and tenant. Gilbert is probably closer to the Hayter family in Persuasion.

Anne as good as a point you make about dropbox it doesn't solve the hurdles of 1) need to own new site/app that I'm not already constantly using 2) I'll need to go in and delete it for more space eventually 3) I can also use my solo discord for links and lists and whatever else between devices without involving other other programs.

That is fair, but this raises another question for me.

Do you not have some kind of application that already automatically saves your photos where you can access them on other devices? Doesn't that come standard already installed on most phones? Like for me the default would be Google Photos because I have an Android phone, I just hate the interface of Google photos even before all their recent AI shit so I don't use it and I have Dropbox set up to back up my photos instead. (I do have a premium account because I also use Dropbox for other things.) If I want it to back up other folders, like images I download, I can do that too, or upload an image manually.

This is why the idea of needing to use discord to send an image to another device was baffling to me, like... that functionality is pretty much built into every smartphone already? I'm really curious now if this is a feature fewer people are using.

As far as lists and links go, I've used Google Keep for a long time though I am trying to move away from Google products generally so I am looking for an alternative, but Discord wouldn't have the kind of functionality I want there anyway. I also use Firefox on mobile as well as desktop so any bookmarks I make are synced (though I get that browser bookmarks aren't the fastest way to save a link you want to send to someone else).

what color pencils/markers do u use!!!!!

(Here is a drawing as an example) Hi, i use a lot of highlighters! mostly because they usually have softer colours and don't make ballpoint pens bleed, i usually use the ones that are called "morandi", these:

Because they have some very nice colours, but like, most highlighters from other brands should work just fine as well (and i really mean it because i also use from many others a lot of the time, i just recommend these cuz they are the ones i use the most and also work the best, at least for me) i also use gel pens sometimes if i want more detail and alcohol markers (both not from any particular brand) sometimes.

Also i don't use colour pencils at all anymore lmao (no hate to colour pencils they are just not very comfy for me to use :P)
