she probably would have succeeded, if the dai li hadn't saved him.

it was long feng himself who had decided to spare his life. he'd just been a pawn, after all- only a child. dai had done what he could to repay the man for his generosity- by becoming the dai li's spy within in the earth kingdom palace. people spoke freely around their prince about things that they wouldn't dream of within ear shot of the grand secretariat. for those who said the wrong things...

...well, he couldn't have his half brother find out about the war anymore than long feng could.

"the avatar helped break out a bunch of prisoners from a fire nation prison rig?" dai asked. "are we sure this is accurate?"

"i believe it is," long feng remarked, "-we've verified the claims with many of those who escaped."

dai hummed. if the avatar really had returned, it complicated things. it could be a good thing- it meant this war might finally end- in the earth kingdom's favor. it also meant that things were likely about to get a lot worse- fire lord ozai had doubtlessly already been informed of the avatar's return.

and the avatar was someone the dai li couldn't control.

"i have a proposition," long feng said, "-i want you to track down the avatar. he'll need a firebending teacher."

dai cast a glance towards long feng. his firebending was supposed to be a state secret. it wasn't befitting that a prince of the earth kingdom was a firebender, so they'd gone to great lengths to keep that fact under wraps. why risk it coming out now?

the risk, long feng said, was greater than the reward.

you have the chance to get close to the avatar in a way none of my other agents can, prince dai. you can help provide him with... guidance. help him win the war without disturbing the status quo too much. and i'm sure you won't mind having the chance to travel for a change.

dai thought it over. he wasn't like long feng's other agents. he could always say no if he wanted to. except...

...well, he'd had other ideas.

brainwashing prince zuko wouldn't have proven an effective strategy- something about the process left firebenders dreadfully weak. so instead the dai li had simply... suppressed his memories, and gained his trust another way.

they'd constructed a new identity for him as prince dai of the earth kingdom- one who was loyal to the dai li. he'd more than proven his worth over the years, and now it was time to truly put him to the test- to throw him against the nation whose royal family he'd once been a member of.

he had great confidence that prince dai would succeed.)

Another country examining claims of unethical problems in the fertility business

The House of Representatives yesterday directed its Committee on Health to investigate unethical and exploitative practices in egg procurement and surrogacy by fertility hospitals and clinics in the country.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Babajimi Benson (APC, Lagos) who noted that Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART) and referrals to fertility centred has witnessed a surge in Nigeria in recent years. 

He said, “Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) procedures entail the surgical extraction of eggs from a woman’s ovaries, their fusion with sperm in laboratory settings, and subsequent reintegration into the donor’s body or transfer to another woman or storage in an egg bank;

“These women undergo the surgical egg retrieval, relinquishing control over the eggs obtained. They are typically remunerated between N100,000 to N150,000 per retrieval, with as many as five to six eggs potentially extracted per month”.

He said due to the absence of a suitable regulatory framework, fertility centres exploited providers/donors and potentially engaged in the trade of donated eggs. 

He said, “If this trend is not checked immediately, there’s possibility of a sharp rise in cases of infertility and cancer infections on the part of the young donors and surrogates as well as promoting the exploitative practices involved”.

The House mandated the committee to produce a comprehensive framework for regulating egg procurement and transfer services in Nigeria.

The committee is also to ensure informed consent, appropriate compensation and safeguarding the well-being of providers/donors.

It’s amazing to watch how AI suddenly turned ordinary artists into holy sufferers.

“You’re doing so well, still drawing… despite AI…”

Well. Maybe it’s time to create similar appreciation posts for engineers, doctors, teachers, accountants, designers, biologists, lawyers, logistics specialists, marketers — all of whom learn new tools, frameworks, new medicines, protocols, research reports, laws, requirements, and interfaces every year.

You’re doing great too. But no one tells you:

“Despite spreadsheets looming over us, you’re doing amazing, sweetie.”

Here’s the reality: If you use AI as a tool — not a fetish of fear — you save time on drafts, base structure, and composition. And you can invest that time into quality, detail, and your own artistic magic.

Let’s break it down:

How does an artist work?

(One complex art piece — from idea to completion)

1. Concept. What’s the idea? Mood? Scene? Who’s in it, where’s the light coming from?

2. Sketches. 5–15 mini roughs or thumbnails. On paper or digital. A few hours to a whole day.

3. Composition. Black-and-white value layout. Masses, rhythm, focus, readability.

4. References. Photos, 3D base poses, perspective, textures, clothing — often hours of search.

5. Linework. Base outlines, underpainting, color blocking. Only then the “real” part starts.

6. Light, color, depth. Building atmosphere, spatial layers, focal contrast.

7. Character detailing. Eyes, hands, fabrics, expressions, skin, drapery, texture.

8. Background. Architecture, environment, plants, particles, reflections.

9. Micro-details. Dust in the light, droplets, stitching, jewelry, tiny surface effects.

10. Final polish. Merging, cleanup, final light tweaks, subtle accents.

🕓 Total: 30–50 hours. And still — compromises. Artists get exhausted by step 3. Backgrounds get flatter. Composition gets simplified. Details trimmed down. Because time and energy are limited.

Now imagine:

Steps 1–5 are done by AI. The artist gives direction, prompts, edits, references. But now they have all 30–50 hours for steps 6–10. And they’re not tired.

What’s the result?

— All effort goes into depth and quality, not grinding through sketchwork — More time for variations, storytelling, wild lighting decisions — Space to polish every surface: metal, skin, reflections, mood — Room for narrative in every corner of the scene

This isn’t laziness. It’s strategic effort management. The AI-assisted artist doesn’t skip the hard part — they just skip the routine part.

And yes — they both spent 40 hours. But one built from zero. The other built magic on top of a structure.

Now tell me: Which piece will be deeper? More detailed? More surprising? Which one will make people zoom in, explore, return to it again and again?

There's this sort of anthropomorphizing that inherently happens in language that really gets me sometimes. I'm still not over the terminology of "gravity assist," the technique where we launch satellites into the orbit of other planets so that we can build momentum via the astounding and literally astronomical strength of their gravitational forces, to "slingshot" them into the direction we need with a speed that we could never, ever, ever create ourselves. I mean, some of these slingshots easily get probes hurtling through space at tens of thousands of miles per hour. Wikipedia has a handy diagram of the Voyager 1 satellite doing such a thing.

"Gravity assist." "Slingshot." Of course, on a very basic and objective level, yes, we are taking advantage of forces generated by outside objects to specifically help in our goals. We're getting help from objects in the same way a river can power a mill. And of course we call it a "slingshot," because the motion is very similar (mentally at least; I can't be sure about the exact physics).

Plus, especially compared to the other sciences, the terminology for astrophysics is like, really straightforward. "Black hole?" Damn yeah it sure is. "Big bang?" It sure was. "Galactic cluster?" Buddy you're never gonna guess what this is. I think it's an effect of the fact that language is generally developed for life on earth and all the strange variances that happen on its surface, that applying it to something as alien and vast as space, general terms tend to suffice very well in a lot more places than, like... idk, botany.

But, like. "Gravity assist." I still can't get the notion out of my head that such language implies us receiving active help from our celestial neighbors. They come to our aid. We are working together. We are assisted. Jupiter and the other planets saw our little messengers coming from its pale blue molecular cousin, and we set up the physics just right, so that they could help us send them out to far stranger places than this, to tell us all about what they find out there.

We are assisted.
