still thinking about john/simon/reader where both you and simon have daddy issues, and found them soothed within john.

the push and pull between the two of you, competing so desperately for your captain’s attention when he freely gives it out, anyway. the way he brushes his shoulder to yours, or the way he knocks his knuckles on the dip of simon’s spine.

john is a vast pool of affection, but you and simon come snapping your maws, tugging at each other’s tails like john doesn’t croon and coo and welcome your messes into his den. like he doesn’t cup your jaw and tell you how proud he is of you, or that he doesn’t clamp a heavy hand on simon’s thigh and sit with him while simon’s forcing his haunting back within the labyrinths of his mind.

so when john asked, all crinkled eyes and coaxing smile, if you and simon can be kind to each other, well, what else is there to do if not just that?

(there are nights, now, when you wake up and it is simon who’s curled up close to you. not close enough to touch, but close enough that you feel the mattress dip more than usual—a reminder that you are not alone, anymore. that you can sleep good, now. that you no longer need to be on alert even through your exhaustion because no one will come after you, anymore. john’s made sure of that.

she hums, accusing, and john knows. she doesn’t have to prod any more than this because john knows. he knows that he’s cheated—selfishly using your and simon’s needs to fill in that empty chasm that’s haunted him as the years crawled by, but who can blame him?

2024 has been s busy year. I haven't had time to promote published work I've written lately. I've done articles for BACK ISSUE #150, 154, 155, 156 and the upcoming #157. Get your paper and/or digital copies here, and click on the individual issues I've mentioned. Print issues are selling out fast, but you should be able to get PDF copies to read on your phone, computer or tablet anytime.

I've been fortunate to work with editors who have given me a lot of creative freedom. One of those has been Michael Eury. Michael retired as BACK ISSUE editor-in-chief at end of August. He's been tough, but fair to all of us staff writers while being a good friend and mentor. If anyone deserves a happy retirement, it's Michael Eury. He will always be the heart and soul of BACK ISSUE.

Roger Ash is Michael's successor as BACK ISSUE chief. Michael has left the magazine in great hands. My experiences with Roger on the assignments he's given me have been as pleasant and as entertaining and as fun as they have been with Michael. Michael has guided Roger as well as he has guided us writers, and while I miss working with Michael, I truly enjoy working with Roger, and I look forward future articles under Roger's editorial supervision. yeah simon is the one to scare people away when they get too close you, using his size and movement to intimidate, simultaneously shielding you behind him

yeah soap is the one barking loud, creating a spectacle and calling people out, and warning them away

yeah kyle is the one humiliating people, mocking offenders until either their own actions dawn on them or they finally recognize the venom in his eyes

but price is the one that launches into swinging. there is no warning, no hesitation. taking a step, even a single word against you, warrants immediate action in his mind. it's no laughing fucking matter. you are a top fucking prize, his prize, the best the world has to offer. john is rabid in his protection, bearing tooth and boot and claw and fist. there’s no point in talking to him or trying to negotiate, an offense is an offense and he won’t meet it halfway. someone looks at you the wrong way? they won't be able to see out of swollen eyes after headbutts them, crushing their nose. someone whispers something nasty about you? good luck even eating with that jaw wired shut. god forbid someone touches you, the other three boys can barely hold him back. john will break countless bones in every way he knows and beat his knuckles bloody if your smile starts to drop.
