A Message from Vi (Next in Line IF)

Hi everyone,

I know that I've been away a while and haven't updated the game. Long story short? A while ago, I was laid off from my job, lost my health insurance (and access to therapy and other services), and have been focused heavily on finding a new job while also battling severe mental health struggles. After starting therapy, getting diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and starting medication, I was finally finding a good balance. But losing my job reverted a lot for me and I lost my income and health access.

So, I am really, truly sorry for not being around for a while. I am still trying to find a job though I have a final interview tomorrow and I'm really hoping I get an offer.

But I have been on hiatus because of these personal issues. This time has also given me some time to think about Next in Line and how to move forward with it. Because I think about the game and this community all the time. I miss it. I miss working on it. I miss engaging with all of you.

So, you can expect a new message here in the coming week. I think it's important to be transparent and honest with you. The game will be continuing but every time I work on it, I feel incredibly overwhelmed by the scope. As many of you know, Next in Line, was my first interactive fiction. And because of the excitement, I put a ton of pressure on myself to offer all kinds of things like pets, a ton of scenes with all these combinations, places to visit, etc. Essentially, I created a massive, overwhelming amount of scene combinations and character configurations. Because of this, I have struggled to create updates these last couple years, because it physically overwhelms me to the point where I mentally short wire and just can't do it. My anxiety when it comes to the game sends me spiraling because I'm terrified of never living up to the expectations I set.

So, next week, I will be providing you with a scaled back plan for the game. I'll include details on what's staying and what's not. I know it's going to suck for me to say 'hey, this won't be a part of the game anymore' but I have to do this if I want to actually deliver the content. Once that game is actually finished, there's always possibility things could get added back.

Anyway, talk soon. Feel free to submit your thoughts and questions related to this. I'll review and answer the best I can.

Quick Announcement.

I will be going on a short hiatus due to some life circumstances. I will be posting some drafts every once in a while but I don't know how often I can update my Sonic AUs or anything else.

I apologize for the inconvenience as I've been posting less than I would like regardless. Until I can set my priorities straight, I'm taking a step back.

Update! You decide my next project!

For the House of Glass I have decided to plan out pages for the entire story - normally I script the entire thing and only draw out and release a few snippets.

It's a two parter, and part one has 50 pages including the ones I have already posted. Part two is shorter and has more character stuff. So here's the big question -

Hello, all ^^ I don’t usually discuss my personal matters on here but this is one of those instances where irl bleeds into the blog.

To make a long story short, I had a health-related surgical procedure done. I will not be going into more detail, as I’d like to maintain my privacy. By the time this post goes live from my queue, I should already be out of the operating room. However, because of my admittedly poor constitution, I have no idea how the recovery will go or how my body will react to the anesthesia or post-op medication.

It is for this reason that I will unfortunately not be holding an April Fools’ Day blog event this year. It’s also why I didn’t do my usual anniversary writing prompts for 2025 (I was preoccupied psyching myself up for the operation).

I apologize in advance if I’m slow to reply to new asks or keeping up with Twst news in the weeks to come. I don’t want to push myself during the recovery process and potentially stress myself out even more 💦 If you see posts still going up, it’s queued content from weeks ago, NOT things I have recently written.

On another note, would Harlequin one-shots for my showtime one-shot collection be something y'all would wanna read? Those would range from non-canon, to soft-canon and I already have some ideas cooking up.

Well, looks like with a thin pull, Dolmistaska pulled a victory!

It is definitely an interesting case, Dolmistaska was asked to be riffed by the creator themselves, who is very open to critique. I've already heard from a lot of people that Dolmistaska is actually good. Hopefully it will be an entertaining palette cleanser we get in between all the terrible shit we usually rummage through.

Dolmistaska riff will begin next year in January taking Ask the Werewolves's spot.

And speaking of bad shit next year, I've already confirmed Dominic Deegan's replacement in advance.

Yuuup, if you thought comics with backstage drama were over, you're on the wrong path.

And I know it will be a long while before we put Carry On on hold, but I can confirm its replacement as well

Hope for the Planet is now on Bluesky!

Not to worry if you are like me and use tumblr as your primary social media--nothing about the tumblr blog is going to change. But I want to extend the reach of Hope for the Planet when I know it helps a lot of people, as well as have a backup home if tumblr ever unexpectedly goes belly up.

In all honesty, I never used Twitter and don't feel like I have a great grasp on how do Bluesky "correctly", so please be patient with any potential awkward fumbling over there. All good news stories posted here will also be posted on Bluesky on roughly the same schedule--longer form posts (like answers to asks, etc.) will be linked separately.

So it’s official that NB will be no more once December rolls around. It’s unfortunate to see this happen but it was inevitable, I called it since day 1 that things weren’t gonna work out and I guess it really happened. The announcement of the game drove fans away, even after the game was released the devs made far too many greedy decisions that only drove current fans away from them. It feels awful to see a game I cherished fall off this hard, but that’s neither here nor there.

I’ll wait to see what Solmare has in store for the franchise since I truly do love this silly game. As for the future of this blog I’m definitely not going to abandon it, I’ll do my best to edit any cards that come out this month and from there I’ll focus on editing some old icons from the og game that I simply had no time to edit.

I know it’s not much but I hope you guys will continue being here to still share your love for obey me with me! For now though thank you for all the support I’ve gotten from you guys!

Hello, and thank you for reaching out about this! I do apologize for your discomfort 💦

I believe that this ask comes as a result of this post, as that’s the most recent post I can think of which might match the description of “hating on Malleus”. You’ll note that there is now a Malleus Draconica critical tag, which you can block if you choose to. This way, you won’t come across it while browsing my blog.

I’ve also gone ahead and retroactively tagged other related posts (although they’re mostly posts from the past year or two). There are similar tags for other characters, such as #Vil Schoenheit critical and the like. These tags are put on posts in which I discuss why I don’t like a particular character. I hope you can use these tags and the blocking feature to best curate your own experience on this blog.

The reason why I elected to make a new tag rather than exclude my posts altogether from the main tags is because I don’t think that it’s conducive to shut away “negativity” about a character when Twst is a game that actively promotes characters of a dubious nature. It encourages us to embrace both the good and the bad aspects of its large cast of colorful characters—so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pointing out their flaws or why someone might not like X or Y for them. This can make some people uncomfortable, certainly. However, I don’t think that’s a reason to prevent sharing of this critique with others who might gain new insight from it. I say this as someone who has gained insight myself by reading about characters I dislike, and someone who has been told that their works have entirely changed people’s minds about certain characters. It goes both ways.

Even if someone dislikes a character I happen to like, I find it helpful to read conflicting opinions to gain a fuller perspective. I want to give others that opportunity as well. I realize that not everyone may share this sentiment though, which is why there’s always the option to block what you don’t wish to see. (Prioritize your own comfort!!) I think people should be able to choose not to look at content that upsets them, but I don’t think it makes sense for this content to be hidden from others who may be interested in seeing “the other side”, if that makes sense!

I also believe that fandom—especially as of late—seems to conflate critique with hate, to the point where the slightest criticism of a character or content is labelled as “hate”. This can lead to a dangerous area where anything that isn’t immediate and glowing praise is deemed “bad”. That’s not an area I want this fandom to hit, as it would inevitably limit our ideas (although this also applies to all other fandoms).

In reality, “hate” and “critique” are NOT synonyms of each other. Hate is hostile and exists purely to shame or to tear down the content in question. It doesn’t consider the other side or care to ask questions. Critique is judgment or opinion of that content, and it is usually meant to help improve the content. It has us ask “why?” and “how?” To put it simply, hate is “you’ll never be better” and critique is “you can do better”.

In this instance, perhaps the previous anon’s statements (“[…] now I'm a hater. Like wtf. He’s so incompetent.”) are hate. (Even so, they’re entitled to feel the way that they do, even if the way the opinion was expressed was over-the-top.) I do think I was emotional in my response, but I don’t think I expressed myself in a hateful manner overall. I opened with what is arguably a defense of his behavior and then went on to point out a legitimate character flaw Malleus has and how not everyone reading those vignettes would perceive that flaw in a gracious manner. It’s not blind hatred; it’s valid critique and it comes from a place of wanting to see him improve as a person. I try to not character bash because no one (myself included) feels good seeing others hating on their favorites. Malleus has flaws, and so do all the other characters. Those flaws should be acknowledged, and it’s up to the individual to determine whether those flaws result in liking or disliking that particular character.

I’m not saying that everyone should agree with my stance on the Malleus Dorm Uniform vignettes or how I feel about Malleus in general. What I am saying is that not all negative statements made about a character should automatically be categorized as “hate”. I worry that if we stretch the definition of the word too loose, it could become a situation where any and all critique is silenced 💦 What happens when no critique is allowed? Everyone begins to think the same way or has to be fearful of expressing an opinion, and fandom becomes so much less fun for everyone involved… And, worse still, the canon content itself can feel confident resting on its laurels and not actually put forth the effort to “be better” (since there’s no negative feedback coming from the fandom).

Again, I encourage you to curate your online experience!! Do whatever makes you the most comfortable. If you don’t like seeing something, there is zero shame in blocking it or taking whatever steps necessary to disengage. Lastly, please take care to not to overgeneralize what counts as “hate”!
