April Kerner Has Me in a Chokehold
I swear, every time I pick up an April Kerner book, I tell myself I’ll take it slow and then end up binging the whole thing in one night. Her stories just hit different—they’re emotional, messy, and so real that I feel like I know her characters personally.
After reading Boys with Secrets, I thought, “Okay, there’s no way she can make me feel this much again.” Then I read Boys with Braces, and now I’m just sitting here, fully invested in these fictional people like they’re my actual friends. Lazar? Riley? John? I’d defend them with my life.
I love how Kerner doesn’t shy away from difficult topics but still gives us those heartwarming, swoon-worthy moments that make me believe in love again. Her writing has this effortless way of making you feel everything—the angst, the joy, the absolute devastation (because yes, I did cry).
If you haven’t read her books yet, what are you doing?? Go suffer and fall in love like the rest of us. 😭💕

Reading Japanese classics is so oddly comforting(?) I know it sounds insane as most of them consist of sensitive topics but sometimes some lines are so good, it makes you want to squeeze your own heart until it ruptures, it makes your head spin in circles leaving you numb and unable to think any further while the line that you just read echoes like a haunting whisper in the dark.

"I can't hurt her with my existence. She fucking builds things for Olympus's sake. I am the Lord of Destruction. I can't destroy her too. Not her." Percy said, his voice calm but in sorrow now, a tired honesty in it. Eros smiled.
"How do you know she does not need somethings inside her to be destroyed in order to be better?" He asked and Percy turned to look at him, green eyes still in agony.
"Destruction is not always evil. I thought you should know that by now." He said, while Percy took a deep, shaking breath.
You can't run away from love forever.

A master of the Gothic, the romantic, and the premiere stan of the #faustopheles ship as a whole, @ghostpoetics knows a good time when they see one. Check out what they had to say about INFAUST and while you're at it, keep an eye out for their upcoming book THE SAINT OF HEARTBREAK as well. I had the honor of reading an ARC and it's just what the doctor ordered if you've ever felt a little too much about Judas Iscariot.
Infaust is a dark romance recounting the tale of the witch Rehan Nadir and the elusive chaos god known only as the Piper. Trapped in a world where even the very dirt wants them dead, the two must depend on one another to escape—and along the way realize that perhaps the definition of a happily ever after really is a subjective one.
Contains psychological horror, violence, dubious consent, protag corruption, villain "love interest", blood, descriptions of being burnt alive, and other gruesome acts. Viewer discretion is advised.

alright, this week's book series was the Starmetal Symphony with two books so far: August Kitko and the Mechas from Outer Space, and the recently released sequel: Ardent Violet and the Infinite Eye.
Review time: algorythm and customer service stylings get 5 stars but realistically I'd give it a 3.5 or 4. Plot is interesting, the characters feel very fully fleshed out and realistic. Some good representation of queer characters and different cultural concepts. Plot centers around some classic Big Fuckin' Bots and some Big Fuckin' Bot fights in space, on planets, and our hearts and minds as everyone panics about the (very relatable) ongoing, neverending, end of the world.
I'd reccomend it, they're fun reads. The writing style is interesting though, it requires a lot of inertia to get into. Once you're in its hard to stop, the fight scenes hit like a movie and when you put the book down its like coming out of a VR simulation -IF you can get that inertia going by reading enough in one sitting.
Check em out, or check some other books out instead. You probably realistically don't have anything better to be doing than reading a book

Dubliners by James Joyce
I was gifted a copy of this book last Christmas, and although it was not really in my tbr I was intrigued to dive in a classic out of my comfort zone. I decided that the best way to approach the book for me was with the help of an audiobook, and I am very happy of the choice I made. To make things even better I buddy read this with my dear friend @oneardentstudybuddy. The thing I really liked about this book is how each short story is a brief flash into the daily life of common people living in Dubiln. As my friend and I concluded, it's a bit like quickly looking through a window and spying for a bit into the lives of people. That's honestly really interesting to just look at normal thing happening to people and experience their thoughts and feelings about a priest dying, or on an unwanted pregnancy that has to be made right with a forced marriage. There is not one specific story that shines above the others, but the entirety of the book is the true gem. It's like going through a picture book of the common lives in the city. It's not a book I would normally pick for myself but I had a good time with it, and I am happy I finally read something by Joyce because to be honest I have always been quite intimidated by his books, so this is truly a win for me.
#it also means i got to take one more book of my physical tbr so congrats to me#bookblr#booklr#2024 book#reading#bookrec#book recommendation#book review#book cover#mine#the---hermit
