Tbh at this point you should just make your own webcomic app/website because it would probably be 100 times better than whatever going on with webtoon right now.
hahaha it wouldn't tho, sorry 💀
Here's the fundamental issue with webcomic platforms that a lot of people just don't realize (and why they're so difficult to run successfully):
Storage costs are incredibly expensive, it's why so many sites have limitations on file sizes / page sizes / etc. because all of those images and site info have to be stored somewhere, which costs $$$.
Maintenance costs are expensive and get more so as you grow, you need people who are capable of fixing bugs ASAP and managing the servers and site itself
Financially speaking, webcomics are in a state of high supply, low demand. Loads of artists are willing to create their passion projects, but getting people to read them and pay for them is a whole other issue. Demand is high in the general sense that once people get attached to a webtoon they'll demand more, but many people aren't actually willing to go looking for new stuff to read and depend more on what sites feed them (and what they already like). There are a lot of comics to go around and thus a lot of competition with a limited audience of people willing to actually pay for them.
Trying to build a new platform from the ground up is incredibly difficult and a majority of sites fail within their first year. Not only do you have to convince artists to take a chance on your platform, you have to convince readers to come. Readers won't come if there isn't work on the platform to read, but artists won't come if they don't think the site will be worth it due to low traffic numbers. This is why the artists with large followings who are willing to take chances on the smaller sites are crucial, but that's only if you can convince them to use the site in favor of (or alongside) whatever platform they're using already where the majority of their audience lies. For many creators it's just not worth the time, energy, or risk.
Even if you find short-term success, in the long-term there are always going to be profit margins to maintain. The more users you pull in, the more storage is used by incoming artists, the more you have to spend on storage and server maintenance costs, and that means either taking the risk at crowdfunding (ex. ComicFury) or having to resort to outsider investments (ex. Tapas). Look at SmackJeeves, it used to be a titan in the independent webcomic hosting community, until it folded over to a buyout by NHN and then was pretty much immediately shuttered due to NHN basically turning it into a manwha scanlation site and driving away its entire userbase. And if you don't get bought out and try your hand at crowdfunding, you may just wind up living on a lifeline that could cut out at any moment, like what happened to Inkblazers (fun fact, the death of Inkblazers was what kicked off the cultural shift in Tapas around 2015-16 when all of IB's users migrated over and brought their work with them which was more aimed towards the BL and romancee drama community, rather than the comedy / gag-a-day culture that Tapas had made itself known for... now you deadass can't tell Tapas apart from a lot of scanlation sites because it got bought out by Kakao and kept putting all of its eggs into the isekai/romance drama basket.)
Right now the mindset in which artists and readers are operating is that they're trying way, way too hard to find a "one size fits all" site. Readers want a place where they can find all their favorite webtoons without much effort, artists wants a place where they can post to an audience of thousands, and both sides want a community that will feel tight-knit. But the reality is that you can't really have all three of those things, not on one site. Something always winds up having to be sacrificed - if a site grows big enough, it'll have to start seeking more funding while also cutting costs which will result in features becoming paywall'd, intrusive ads, creators losing their freedom, and/or outsider support which often results in the platform losing its core identity and alienating its tight-knit community.
If I had to describe what I'm talking about in a "pick one" graphic, it would look something like this:
(*note: this is mostly based on my own observations from using all of these sites at some point or another, they're not necessarily entirely accurate to the statistical performance of each site, I can only glean so much from experience and traffic trackers LMAO that said I did ask some comic pals for input and they were very helpful in helping me adjust it with their own takes <3).
The homogenization of the Internet has really whipped people into submission for the "big sites" that offer "everything", but that's never been the Internet, it relies on being multi-faceted and offering different spaces for different purposes. And we're seeing that ideology falter through the enshittification of sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. where users are at odds with the platforms because the platforms are gutting features in an attempt to satisfy shareholders whom without the platforms would not exist. Like, most of us aren't paying money to use social media sites / comic platform sites, so where else are they gonna make the necessary funds to keep these sites running? Selling ad space and locking features behind paywalls.
And this is especially true for a lot of budding sites that don't have the audience to support them via crowdfunding but also don't have the leverage to ask for investments - so unless they get really REALLY lucky in EITHER of those departments, they're gonna be operating at a loss, and even once they do achieve either of those things there are gonna be issues in the site's longevity, whether it be dying from lack of growing crowdfunding support or dying from shareholder meddling.
So what can we do?
We can learn how to take our independence back. We don't have to stop using these big platforms altogether as they do have things to offer in their own way, particularly their large audience sizes and dipping into other demographics that might not be reachable from certain sites - but we gotta learn that no single site is going to satisfy every wish we have and we have to be willing to learn the skills necessary to running our own spaces again. Pick up HTML/CSS, get to know other people who know HTML/CSS if you can't grasp it (it's me, I can't grasp it LOL), be willing to take a chance on those "smaller sites" and don't write them off entirely as spaces that can be beneficial to you just because they don't have large numbers or because they don't offer rewards programs. And if you have a really polished piece of work in your hands, look into agencies and publishing houses that specialize in indie comics / graphic novels, don't settle for the first Originals contract that gets sent your way.
For the last decade corporations have been convincing us that our worth is tied to the eyes we can bring to them. Instead of serving ourselves, we've begun serving the big guys, insisting that it has to be worth something eventually and that it'll "payoff" simply by the virtue of gambler's fallacy. Ask yourself what site is right for you and your work rather than asking yourself if your work is good enough for them. Most of us are broke trying to make it work on these sites anyways, may as well be broke and fulfilled by posting in places that actually suit us and our work if we can. Don't define your success by what sites like Webtoons are enforcing - that definition only benefits them, not you.
#my favorite out of these is comicfury because it gives you the most control out of all of them#and you can offer monetization tools like ads and patreon links#it also offers super easy tools to help build your own site if you're new to that#it's as close to “running your own site” as comic hosting can get#but you can also learn how to run your own site if you want undeniably full control without fear of the platform host shuttering#also look into collectives like SpiderForest!#they basically operate as a co-op where people host their work with them and get ad opportunities#but you have to apply to get in#ama#ask me anything#anon ama#anon ask me anything#webcomic tips

Do the boys have jobs in the modern AU?
I can see Machete possibly being a librarian or office worker. I could also see Vasco being a barista or retail worker, but I can't really imagine either in a Walmart vest.
Part of me thinks it would be adorable if they ran a tiny corner store, but I know its unlikely
I still haven't decided, sorry! ´v`'
I've gotten a lot of excellent suggestions on what Machete could be doing for a living, from high fashion to something do do with history, museums and art, but I think he's doomed to repeat his mistake and choose some kind of high-paying but soul-sucking white collar job, over what he actually wants to do. But again, I haven't decided.
Vasco comes from an upper class background in the modern au, and I've been envisioning his family owning a business that has something to do with horses. His parents might've tried to persuade him to continue in their footsteps, but Vasco probably would've had other plans. He's worked mixed jobs over the years, barista being one of them, and his adaptability and admirable people skills tend to help him to do well on every venture he embarks on. But it's entirely possible he hasn't quite figured out what his long-term calling is.
#answered#serpent-dude#Vaschete lore#modern au#I still think about the alternate reality where they operate a bakery together and everything is well in the world#or that one suggestion where one is a florist and other a tattoo artist and their shops are in the same building#or that one that popped up last summer where Vasco is a dressage rider and Machete is a fencer#and they meet while they're both representing Italy in the olympics

What's so interesting to me about Kelvin is that, yes, he is very self-absorbed and attention-seeking. I mean, season one established that he has/had a full blown god complex comparing himself to Jesus. But he makes that comparison in part because he wants to do good and be Christ-like. Out of his family, he is probably the most altruistic and compassionate, and it's a fascinating dichotomy.
Making your own version of the Bible and putting your name on it is extremely egotistical, and he has very personal motivations of wanting acceptance from the public and from his family. He's quite literally rewriting his own faith to fit his view of the world, rejecting anything that doesn't serve him. He's also very clearly doing this for all of the people who have felt ostracized by their faith. He's creating a safe space for himself, but it's equally as important to him that he's doing this for other people. He's accepting people that would be turned away from so many other communities, religious or not.
It's so interesting to see the contrast within the Gemstones and Evangelicals as a whole where they bend their religion to themselves. What we typically see is the Gemstones being ignorant/ambivalent of scripture that dictates humility, modesty, forgiveness, etc. Kelvin is actively denying the parts of his faith that are used to harm him and others, and we see that road to unlearning some of his prejudice in season 3 especially.
Kelvin's story is so much about how finding inner peace and embracing others are intertwined paths. His entire relationship with Keefe is Kelvin continuing to make the choice to challenge and improve himself in order to help Keefe. The whole reason he came out and became successful with Prism was BECAUSE of Keefe! Keefe is his follower, Keefe's life unquestionably improved when he met Kelvin, but he's also giving Kelvin strength to live more earnestly in turn.
I'm really excited to see where the rest of the season goes with Kelvin's journey, and I'm hoping that we see Prism become a stronger part of the church/a bigger community as Kelvin likely will become more confident with being himself in the public eye.
#the righteous gemstones#kelvin gemstone#keefe chambers#gembers#righteous gemstones#I have so many thoughts about how Prism shows the importance of religion beyond faith and how it builds communities#And how American Christianity is so personalized that everyone is operating on their own set of rules and beliefs#so there's no 'true' version of Christianity (obviously that's why there's so many sects) but there's the choice to use religion#either to be accepting and community-minded or hateful and destructive#And the Gemstones for the most part use the former in public and the latter in private#something something tying it to when Jesse said he and Judy were more angry like Eli and Kelvin was soft like Aimee-Leigh

This is funnier without context so: to Chilchuck, what does Laios Touden smell like, you think?

Operator & Drifter Headcanons
as always when i fall headfirst into a new fandom with a character that lets you go all building blocks lego with their backstory/personality (to an extent), i've gone deranged with operator and drifter (and, of course, umbra, who's living rent free in my head alongside AC6's C4-621 and Walter).
since i've got my fic anthropomorphism with Umbra learning to be a space dad to Operator while Operator attempts the same in reverse, and am planning on writing the "Umbra in 1999 with Drifter" fic at some point next week... I was like right, gotta sit down and lock in, build the foundation for these characters that I can expand on and explore as I write. so under the cut, if you're curious about my rough plan for Operator and Drifter, read away~
OPERATOR:
Has forgotten their original name, since the Orokin hadn't been interested in that shit and either referred to them by their Warframe's name, or the serial number the Tenno had been given. As such, Operator has adopted "Operator" as their name.
They have no strong feelings about their gender. While biologically female, Operator has a very apathetic relationship with their gender or presentation and genuinely feels like it's an irrelevant detail about themselves - and their Warframes.
Their memory in general is fairly spotty, just going off of the Second Dream stuff. They remember bits and pieces, but ask them anything pre-Zariman and they draw a complete blank. As it's been centuries since then too, they have no way of ever knowing who they were pre-Zariman.
They act like an old man but have a subtle impish sense of humour.
They're very pragmatic - to the point where some may say they're cold - but that's usually when they're in "mission mode". Outside of that, they're a lot softer, but still fairly formal and stiff for a child.
They worry over Drifter quite a lot, and despite Drifter being older than them physically, Operator feels that they're more responsible than Drifter, and that Drifter is too naive.
Unintentionally, Operator underestimates Drifter.
Likes being the one to "take care of things". They're used to being relied upon, and are harsh on themselves if they fail to fix something or handle something adequetely.
They're also very empathetic, but this also ties in with their desire to "fix things". They can meddle overly much in other people's problems without asking, and get annoyed if they feel like their help is being rebuffed without good reason.
They prefer having Sentinels over live animals as battle companions, as they would stress overly much about keeping the animal alive in combat. They cover it up with the excuse of them just prefering the unfailing obedience of robots, though.
Socialising isn't really their strong point. They get along well with like-minded individuals (long stare at Umbra), but if interacting with children their age who act like children, they flounder a little and are out of their depth.
Preferred Warframes, aside from Umbra, are Voruna or Xaku. Preferred weaponry are battleaxes and either sniper rifles/automatic rifles. They are ruthlessly efficient in battle.
DRIFTER:
Like Operator, has also forgotten their name, and is content to use the name "Drifter" since that's what everyone called them in Duviri, and after several thousands of cycles, it just kinda stuck.
In 1999, though, they kept the nickname "Marty" for their KIM messenger ID, and the Hex use Drifter/Marty interchangeably, after a while.
Reason why Drifter likes "Marty" is because it's a nickname that isn't tangled up with Operator in some way. "Tenno", "Operator", even "Kiddo" - all those belong to Operator, but "Marty" is 100% Drifter's, even if it was an off-hand joke from Amir.
(Bonus that Marty is one letter away from being "Martyr")
Drifter also has no strong feelings about their gender, though they make an effort to present themselves as pretty ambiguous and are equally vague if people ask what their sex/gender is. Mostly it's because they never had to think about it overly much in Duviri, and in 1999 they're somewhat off-kilter at it being an actual topic of discussion, so they just try to avoid it lol
You can fit so many suppressed memories in this fella! Drifter remembers a lot more than Operator did about pre-Zariman, and their time on the Zariman itself, but don't like to dwell on it overly much.
Drifter is a master at compartmentalisation - to their own detriment.
They act far more youthful and childish than Operator, prone to getting excited or openly fascinated with new things, or expressing eagerness/impatience over desired stuff. Saying that, they know when they need to focus and when to act serious, but it does mean people do underestimate Drifter if they never get to see that side of them.
They can be surprisingly pragmatic in a cold and ruthless way, but they're able to balance that with their compassion.
They forget that they can't just die/kill themselves to avoid awkward situations anymore in 1999 - or, they can, but the Hex would likely be like "what the fuck is wrong with you" and that's a whole ugly can of oroworms Drifter isn't planning on delving into this century no siree.
They love fluffy animals - NONE OF THEM HAD FUR IN DUVIRI OKAY. NOT THE WOLVES. NOT THE SHEEP. NOT THE HORSES. NO FUR. DRIFTER SUFFERED IN A FURLESS HELL. So they love Kubrows. They love them a lot. And their floofs.
They sleep in a nest of floofs in 1999 sorry i don't make the rules
Socialising is their strong point, as the Tales of Duviri and their heavy reliance on the emotional regulation the story characters imparted, have Drifter terrifyingly adept and micromanaging their own emotions and keenly sussing out other people's.
This does mean they're VERY GOOD at manipulating people by playing on their emotions - but they only do it for good reasons (in their eyes)! Giving good advice and whatnot to the Hex, but also knowing when to lightly step around sensitive topics or how to navigate towards said topics without triggering an emotional landmine.
If Drifter was evil they would be terrifying tbh
Their preferred Warframes in 1999 are Umbra, Sevagoth and Dante. Preferred weaponry are nikana and pistol, simulating their time in Duviri. They also really like Dante's grimoire... they're efficient in battle but also like making a game of it, a holdover from their time in Duviri.
They also sometimes prefer fighting as a squishy human, usually when they're operating Umbra, and enjoy fighting side by side in melee combat. They're a real force of nature when they get going, those two...
#warframe#warframe 1999#warframe drifter#operator warframe#headcanons#warframe ramblings#i love building characters#anyways i hope you guys enjoy my drifter and operator when i get these fic going#hehe

I appreciate the trial-and-error steps that go into the development of MantahCorp's neural implants: the best Kash can do initially is trigger the Brachiosaur's fear response.
Basic prey instinct is to freeze, especially for small animals (fawns), so that one's easy for the baby to comprehend. She might not even be fully responding to the command: this could just be instinctive protection. A full-on panic attack, amplified by an electrode in the brain cutting off commands to move.
How long until her legs lose strength and she lies down? Or her neck begins to sink? That doesn't matter...there's just one command, and that's "Stop. Freeze. Don't move. You won't be hurt if you don't move."
The irony is...quite something.

Geminislay in Gotham Part 1: Is it really murder if they started it?
Gem didnt know how she got here. One moment she was gathering resources for her season 10 base expansion, the next she was POOFED into a random, grimy back alley that would put even the darkest corner of the Goblin Empire to shame.
“What the- oh!”
She was also being cornered by four angry looking guys with guns.
“Okay…hey dude. Whatcha guys doin’?”
They glanced at each other and glared at her.
“The hell did she come from?”
They raised their guns. Gem glared and drew her sword and shield. She took a defensive stance. She didnt know what was happening, or who these people were, but they didnt look like they were playing nice.
“Does it matter? Get rid of her, she’s in the way.”
Oh, I’ll show you in the way.
This was a free-shift server. She let her redlife skin wash over her.
“Wait! Stop!”
“What the-“
Gem darted to the man on her far right. She raised her shield to knock the barrel of his gun away from her and whipped the edge of her sword across his neck. He dropped the gun to claw at his slashed artery. Gem kicked it out of the way.
She rushed the next closest guy, this time shoving his gun upwards with her shield while still blocking shots from the others. She stabbed him, but he had the audacity to fall before she could retract her sword from his stomach.
No matter, she drew her axe from her inventory…
“The fuck-“
“She’s meta!”
…and slammed a crit into the third mans chest cavity. The last man fired until his gun clicked uselessly. He scrambled to reload.
“Come on, dont tell me you’re out of arrows.” Gem teased.
“STOP!”
Gem cleanly beheaded the man. His headless body collapsed, and she caught sight of the person behind him who had shouted from the entrance of the alley.
“What are you doing?”
He looked a few years younger than her. He held a bo staff. He was wearing a pretty cool outfit, black with a red vest and a cape. He had short, straight black hair parted down the middle. His eyes were hidden behind a domino mask.
And he had her trapped in the alleyway. Gem didnt trust his calm demeanor, but she shifted back to her season ten skin. She switched her axe for her Loyalty III trident, clearly ready to throw it at a moments notice.
“I was defending myself. Honestly, who just points a gun at someone they just met?”
The boy didn’t say anything. He looked down the tip of her trident and let the irony set in.
“Look, Im not gonna hurt you.” Gem paused. She spun her trident out of the overhead throwing grip. It swooshed through the air as she planted the nonlethal end into the ground. It landed with an intimidating thunk.
“Who are you?” He asked.
Gem glanced down at the bodies and giggled. Weird that they havent despawned yet.
“Well, I guess now you can call me Geminislay.”
“…Okay. Are you a meta?”
“I- no? Whats a meta?”
He looked shocked. “A person with like, superpowers. Or something.”
Gem thought for a moment. “Oh! Like Tango?”
“What do tangos have to do with anything?”
“He’s a really nice blaze hybrid, you probably dont know him. There was one time Jimmy kissed him on the cheek and he nearly burned down my house.”
The boy smoothly masked his confusion. “Yeah, like that.”
“Nope! I dont have anything like that.”
His eyes narrowed. “You can change your appearance at will and pull weapons from thin air.”
“Uh yeah? Cant you?”
He didnt answer. “What are your intensions in Gotham?”
“I dont know! I’m honestly just trying to chill, but these guys really seem to have a problem with that!”
“So you decided to murder them!?”
Gem shrugged. “Yup. I mean they’ll res-“ wait a minute, the bodies havent despawned yet. She looked at her hearts, realizing for the first time that they were hardcore colored. “Oh dont tell me there’s a life gimmick here.”
“Um, excuse me?”
Maybe it was like X life or secret life. Really, any of the life series gimmicks could be bad. Hell, with the way they were acting it could even be like lifesteal. “How many hearts do you have?”
“One?”
Gem gawked at him. “Holy- oh my god dude!” Gem chucked a piece of bread at him. He caught it, looking thoroughly confused. “You’re like, one stubbed toe away from dying! Tell me you can at least regen!”
“I dont know what you-“
Footsteps approached them. They both stiffened. The boy turned so his back was to the wall, facing the footsteps but not turning his back on her.
“The fuck is taking you so long?” Said the man who entered the alley. He froze, and then smirked upon seeing the boy. “Well well well, what do we have here? A little birdie.” He glanced at Gem. “And you found a friend.”
Mystery boy raised his staff. “Leave her alone if you know whats good for you.” Well that was kinda nice. Unnecessary, but nice.
“Fine. We’ll let your little friend live, as long as you come quietly. I bet the Joker’s gonna pay reeeaaal well for a new Robin to play with.”
The boy just barely tensed. The comment clearly put him on edge, and he looked ready to attack. Gem decided she had seen enough. She launched her trident into the mans skull, probably piercing a few inches through to the other side. The boy’s eyes followed it, whirling back to her as it returned.
“What was THAT for!?”
“Dude are you crazy? You have ONE HEART!”
“Yeah, and it works perfectly fine!”
“A slime could probably take you out right now, you have one heart.”
He rolled his eyes. She couldnt see, but she could tell.
“Well how many hearts do you have?”
“Ten! Like how you’re supposed to.”
He sighed. “Okay pause. Where are you from?”
Gem blinked. “I’m from Hermitcraft. But I’m not sure where exactly here is. Do you guys have access to a server hub? I was kinda in the middle of something before I got teleported over here.”
“No, we dont have whatever that is, but I need to arrest you.”
“Do you really need to though?”
“You murdered five people in front of me!”
“Im sorry, I was defending myself! Honestly, GOD FORBID women have hobbies.”
He sighed and tapped an earpiece. “This is Red Robin, I have a powered individual who killed five people in less than five minutes. Requesting backup.” He looked back at her.
“Either you come with us and answer our questions, or we take you by force.”
Gem considered her options. She was still trapped in an alleyway, so getting out on foot wasnt an option. And this Red Robin guy had seemed ready to throw down to protect her, so she didnt really want to hurt him. That left two options: up, and down. She could pull out her pickax, but digging straight down was a bad idea to begin with, and he would probably just follow her. So her only option was up. She cursed herself for wearing her chestplate instead of her elytra.
Well, that wasnt a difficult issue to solve.
“I’ll pass, thanks.” She effortlessly shifted into Princess Gem of Dawn, spread her Monarch wings and flew out of the alley.
She saw a few more masked people trying to follow her as she made her escape. They were fast, but her wings were faster. One she lost them, she shifted into a very different skin model, which was her most subtle look. She had much shorter straight red hair and a white jacket. A flashlight was perched on her shoulder. Gemma Taylor, GIGS crew ghost hunter.
