i think one of the best life lessons ra taught me at the tender age of like. seven? wasn't like. being brave!! or always giving it your all!! it was that some crimes are fine really. not all of them! but some crimes are fine. cool, even. epic. one might say
#rangers apprentice#you know then you grow up and you look back and youre like oh that is deeply messed up on some levels#but on other ones. our characters are liars. hypocrites. thieves. deserters. and it's a children's book so theyre also obv presented as Good#but so often characters rebel against a governing body that's clearly presented as unjust and like. this isn't it.#the araluenan crown is more often than not just chillin.#but like. sometimes halt - lets say halt hes the most active criminal in this id say lmao - sometimes halt meets a law he does not like#and he's just like nah that ain't right. and i don't necessarily agree with him all the time#but sometimes i do! and its like. you dont even have to like. hate your government or w/e sometimes laws are not equivalent to morals#pointless ramble but im just thinking

I'm gonna say this in the loosest most bastardized way that I can, but I absolutely adore how ghostwriters will absolutely abuse the fact that Carson has his own law firm as an excuse for him to do whatever the hell he wants.
Although there is some amount of "wiggle-room" in real life with lawyers in Carson's position, I know it's not even remotely close to being accurate but Carson can get away with it because he's just that good of a lawyer and he owns his own business.
He is technically a criminal prosecutor. But also a defense attorney whenever he feels like it. Or Nancy asks him to do it because he will do anything for her. Sometimes if he's bored he'll look into real estate law or if Nancy asks him to do it. And then also estate planning, environmental law, animal rights, business, immigration, employment, medical malpractice, and anything else a general practice attorney would do without actually ever calling himself one because he does have a specialty.
The ghostwriters were really like, "Carson Drew can do whatever the fuck he wants because he's Carson Drew" and that is fantastic.
And now you know why Nancy is the way that she is
#the reason that nancy does whatever she wants is because Carson can#although there is usually a nice little detail of Carson doing research of laws outside of his area of criminal law#so there's like a in-universe explanation/excuse#but still#he just does whatever the fuck he wants because he can#carson drew#nancy drew#nancy drew books

I found the spell Circle of Death while looking at Arcanums for kicks and I need to ask: does ANYONE use this in regular play and if so, are your PCs on trial for war crimes?
Circle of Death
6th-level necromancy Casting Time: 1 action Range: 150 feet Components: V, S, M (the powder of a crushed black pearl worth at least 500 gp) Duration: Instantaneous A sphere of negative energy ripples out in a 60-foot-radius sphere from a point within range. Each creature in that area must make a Constitution saving throw. A target takes 8d6 necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
#HOW ARE YOU AVOIDING FRIENDLY FIRE WITH THAT LARGE OF AN AOE RADIUS. HOLY HELL.#to be clear. this was for an active war criminal of a character lmfao.#will they have an arcanum level-wise? dunno yet. bUT.#this is like. a literal war crime tho lmfao.#contrary to popular belief there ARE theories of universal war crimes and I am pretty sure this qualifies.#(this is also why I get annoyed at 'um there's no geneva convention in exandria lol' takes.#do you think that's the only fucking defined usage of legal limitations on law. and have you ever opened a history book or.)#ANYWAY I DIGRESS#dungeons and dragons

If media has taught me one thing, it's to never own a paperweight capable of causing traumatic brain injury.
My dad owned a heavy glass paperweight once that tapered into a sturdy sharp point on the top, and the fact that no one was murdered with this at all before his retirement from the lawfirm is the surest proof I have that this reality is in fact not fiction.
#original#a marble paperweight or book end? I'm sorry do you want to DIE#luckily real life doesn't work on trope rules like fiction does and so it was just a paperweight and not Chekov's Paperweight#tropes#fantasy tropes#fiction tropes#story tropes#I have a clear memory of being like 12 standing in his office holding that thing & saying out loud 'oh this is a murder weapon'#luckily dad did boring law stuff and not criminal law or high profile corporate lawsuits or whatever#but i do remember thinking it was a stupid thing to keep around bc everyone knows that being hit ONE TIME with a paperweight = death#at least on tv anyway lol#our flag means death#columbo#the fall of the house of usher#I'm pretty sure this trope is in all three of those#come to think of it my dad still might own that paper weight. the fool!#tempting fate in his old age XD#hopefully he doesn't do the Columbo victim thing where he informs someone that he has blackmail on them#and that he's the only one who knows about it. because that's a great way to get paperweight-murdered lol

Book of Aicill
The Book of Aicill relates to the criminal law and is often discussed as being on par in significance with the Senchus Mór; although, the latter deals with civil law. Like the mystery of Saint Patrick’s posthumous authorship of the Senchus Mór, the Book of Aicill attributes its authorship to that of the legendary Cormac Mac Airt who is supposed to have ruled as High-King of Ireland during the 3rd…

In 1921, a law to criminalise lesbian sexual activity was proposed in the House of Commons. Lesbianism had not been banned before, and the majority of legislators thought it safer not to draw the attention of chaste women to such possibilities.

the thing is that like. what people don't want to think about is well. megan's law (and others of its ilk) is super fascist. and not effective unless your goal is to stop sex offenders from recidivating by driving them to suicide
#sorry ive thought abt this before but the book im reading rn had a really interesting chapter abt sex offenders and how theyre use to#basically maintain and increase support for the carceral system. the fact that sex offenders historically have the lowest recidivism rates#among violent criminals and that by publicizing their name and face subjecting them to constant humiliation and ostracization#youre probably increasing the liklihood that theyll re-offend bc there are literally no benefits of not offending if you'll continuously be#subject to punishment for the rest of your life. not to mention how the families and often VICTIMS are negatively impacted by megans law
