So. Storytime for guerilla gardeners and solarpunk enthusiasts. This story comes to me 3rd hand but I believe the basic shape of it is true, even if details may be off.
So there’s this guy who lives in my parents’ town. Wanted to have a pocket farm but lives on an urban lot in a small city instead because y’know jobs and stuff. He could definitely get a few raised beds in the backyard but nothing all that impressive and the front yard is on a very busy road with the expectation that it’ll look reasonably traditional (plus planting food by busy roads isn’t always a good idea).
However
After he’s lived there for a while, he realizes his neighbors are all older people who maybe have more challenges taking care of their yards than they used to. So he goes to his next door neighbor and offers a deal: I’ll mow and maintain your front yard for free if you let me knock down the fences between our backyards and plant them both with food. And you’ll get a cut of the produce.
Presumably the neighbor already knew and trusted this guy because he said yes. So he starts mowing and maintaining his and his neighbor’s front yards and planting food in their now-shared backyards. After a season or two this goes well enough that the next neighbor down the street asks if he can be in on this too.
So now there’s 3 front yards to mow and three backyards full of produce. And it keeps going from there. Dude gets a rider lawnmower and does everyone’s front yards, and meanwhile he’s maintaining an entire block’s worth of produce in the back. His yields got so high that he was able to start offering boxes of produce outside of the block’s residents too. This is how I heard of him: my parents’ next door neighbors were picking up a regular box of produce from him.
I love a couple of things about this story:
Offering to maintain people’s front yards for them allows baby boomers to feed their thirst for keeping up appearances while still getting food production into the neighborhood
As homeowners age offering services like this is legitimately good community building
BLOCK-LONG POCKET FARM
These exact circumstances might not be replicable everywhere, but I love thinking about how these principles could be applied.

Acropolis Gardens, a historic residential complex in the heart of Astoria, Queens, is renowned not only for its architectural charm but also for the thoughtful amenities that cater to modern urban living. Built in 1923, the complex has evolved to meet the needs of today’s residents while maintaining its timeless appeal. From security features to communal spaces, Acropolis Gardens offers a range of amenities that make life more comfortable and convenient for its diverse community of residents.

1. Video Intercom System: Enhanced Security and Peace of Mind
One of the most important amenities at Acropolis Gardens is the state-of-the-art video intercom system, designed to provide residents with an added layer of security. In a bustling city like New York, peace of mind is crucial, and this modern system allows residents to easily screen visitors before granting access to the building. Whether receiving deliveries or hosting guests, the video intercom offers an extra level of safety, ensuring that residents feel secure in their homes.
2. In-Building Laundry Facilities: Convenience at Your Fingertips
In today’s fast-paced world, convenience is key, and Acropolis Gardens delivers with its in-building laundry facilities. No need to haul laundry to a nearby laundromat or worry about finding time to visit one—residents can take care of their laundry right within the comfort of their own building. The availability of on-site laundry facilities not only saves time but also makes daily life more efficient, freeing up residents to enjoy more of what Astoria has to offer.
3. Beautifully Landscaped Communal Gardens: A Tranquil Urban Oasis
Despite being located in the heart of a vibrant urban area, Acropolis Gardens offers residents access to beautifully landscaped communal gardens, creating a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. These garden spaces are meticulously maintained, providing a serene environment where residents can relax, read a book, or simply enjoy the outdoors. Whether it's a morning coffee in the garden or a quiet evening stroll, the communal green spaces add a touch of nature to city living.
4. Pet-Friendly Environment: Welcoming Your Furry Friends
Acropolis Gardens is a pet-friendly community, recognizing that for many residents, pets are an important part of their family. With flexible pet policies, residents can enjoy the companionship of their pets without having to worry about restrictive rules. The surrounding neighborhood of Astoria is also home to numerous parks and green spaces where residents can walk their pets, adding to the overall appeal of the complex for pet owners.
5. Elevator Access: Convenience for All Residents
The five-story structure of Acropolis Gardens is equipped with elevator access, making it convenient for residents of all ages and abilities to navigate the building. Whether carrying groceries, moving furniture, or simply making daily trips up and down, the elevators provide ease of access to all floors, ensuring a hassle-free living experience for everyone. For families with young children, seniors, or anyone who appreciates convenience, the elevator is an invaluable feature.
6. Flexible Rental and Ownership Options: Catering to Diverse Lifestyles
Acropolis Gardens stands out by offering flexible rental and ownership options, accommodating a wide range of financial situations and lifestyle preferences. Residents can choose between renting a unit or purchasing one, with favorable ownership options like co-purchasing, allowing multiple parties to invest in a property together. These flexible arrangements make Acropolis Gardens accessible to a broader demographic, from young professionals and families to retirees looking for a secure place to settle.
7. Shared Community Spaces: Fostering a Sense of Belonging
Beyond its individual units, Acropolis Gardens places a strong emphasis on community living. The shared communal spaces, such as the garden areas, foster a sense of connection and neighborly interaction. Residents can socialize, organize community events, or simply enjoy the sense of belonging that comes from living in a well-integrated, welcoming environment. This emphasis on community helps create a unique atmosphere that distinguishes Acropolis Gardens from other residential complexes.
8. Proximity to Astoria’s Attractions: Convenience Meets Culture
While not a physical amenity within the building, the location of Acropolis Gardens is an amenity in itself. Situated in the culturally rich and lively neighborhood of Astoria, the complex offers residents easy access to an array of dining, shopping, and entertainment options. From world-class restaurants and trendy cafes to parks, museums, and shopping centers, everything you need is just a short walk or subway ride away. The proximity to the N and W subway lines makes commuting to Manhattan quick and convenient, making Acropolis Gardens an ideal home base for those who want to enjoy both city life and a peaceful retreat.
Conclusion: A Perfect Blend of Comfort and Convenience
Acropolis Gardens is more than just a residence—it’s a community that offers modern amenities tailored to the needs of today’s urban dwellers. From its advanced security systems and in-building laundry facilities to its serene communal gardens and pet-friendly environment, every detail has been carefully designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents. Add in the convenience of its Astoria location and its flexible rental and ownership options, and it’s easy to see why Acropolis Gardens continues to be a desirable place to live for individuals and families alike.
Whether you’re looking for a safe, secure home or a peaceful urban retreat, Acropolis Gardens offers the perfect blend of comfort, community, and convenience.

the allergy i am seeing grow up around small talk in any form is troubling to me. do you know how to make friends with people in your physical environment? it typically starts with small talk. do you want to live in community? small talk. do you want to have the type of relationship with your neighbors where you can run over and borrow a battery for your smoke detector when it starts beeping at 10pm? small talk!! do you want leeway from your coworkers when you fuck up something small? you gotta be able to build a relationship and that's small talk, baybeee.
"but i don't need friends and i don't care about community!" okay, lone ranger, what about the people in your community who need you? "but i have social anxiety!" me too, bud! we simply must soldier on. making up lists of questions to ask people helps. and people are predisposed to be generous, i've found. even if you make some kind of mistake, what is this but the natural give and take of human interaction? nobody is perfect.
you were not put on this earth to live by yourself and then die. you need people and people need you. treat those around you with curiosity and generousness of spirit and you will gain so much goodwill in return.
#my pharmacist spotted me a weeks worth of meds once when mine were in a building closed for asbestos#because we'd been doing small talk for a couple of months and had a rapport#this is not emotional labor btw. in no way is 'doing small talk' emotional labor. dont say that.#edification#community is a garden

According to Ron Finley, growing regenerative gardens and nurturing soil can transform the world. A former fashion designer turned urban gardener, he is turning unused spaces in Los Angeles into abundant greens to feed, nurture, educate, and build communities.
After realizing that his South Los Angeles neighborhood had an abundance of accessible liquor stores, but purchasing organic produce required a 10-mile walk, he decided to become a “gangsta.” In Finley's perspective, a true gangsta is “having knowledge of how systems work and being able to support yourself.”
Today, Ron Finley's influence extends globally. He has facilitated the creation of numerous community gardens in empty lots around Los Angeles, becoming a prominent voice in the guerilla gardening movement. His efforts include international travel to inspire others, and he teaches a MasterClass on gardening while appearing in documentaries about urban farming, such as Urban Fruit and Can You Dig This.

*In writing terms, an architect is someone who plots out, plans, and outlines things before drafting. A gardener is someone who takes an initial idea and then just writes, seeing how the idea grows without specific plans.
Some people use the terms “plotter” and “pantser” (as in, going by the seat of their pants) for these writing styles, but I prefer architect and gardener.

If people make cutesy posts about growing food and herb spirals and composting but never talk about stuff like preventing and getting rid of rats in a garden, I get this suspision that they either haven't actually gardened much or they're more interested in presenting an aesthetically pleasing image than in actually preparing people to deal with a garden.
#Like the unrealistic gun hoarding bunker doomsday preppers of gardening#but instead of imagining a world without rules and community they imagine a world without rats and mold and plant virusses#Which is a better worldview than those preppers but not a more realistic one.
