A War of Attrition
(L&DS Royalty AU)
Ch. 1 - Live by The Feather, Die by The Sword
‘If Caleb could see me now, would he even recognize me?’ Wren thought bitterly. The weight of all the jewelry and fine fabrics felt alien against her skin as she tried to maneuver around the room, making futile attempts to act like this whole situation wasn’t completely unhinged. Urgent whispers filled the space around her. A few people shot her looks of pity, others of apprehension. Only one thought was plaguing her mind. She didn’t need any confirmation, for the expressions on everyone’s faces told her all that she needed to know. The Queen was dead.
Wren was the backup plan. Only a few people were allowed to know that she even existed. However, despite exhaustive measures of secrecy, rumors persisted like insects on the scent of blood. Grandma Josephine was assigned as her caretaker. While educating Wren on court matters and battle strategy, Josephine tried her best to give her a normal childhood. Caleb had been beside her through it all, taking on the role of her protector. When her sister, Eden, ascended the throne upon their father’s untimely death, Wren felt that she could finally have a normal life. She could be free and forgotten away from the constant power struggle of royal life. She followed her passion for keeping the streets of her hometown safe by joining the Hunter’s Association. But just when Wren thought she had found her place in the world, an explosion ripped Josephine and Caleb away from her. Then upon Eden’s death, the life they had supported her in building had all been swept away. Now, standing in the coronation chamber filled with sycophants and envious nobles, it was as if she had died alongside them and become a different person. Wren refused to believe the explosion was just a coincidence, and she knew everyone in this room knew more than they were letting on. A voice from behind broke Wren out of her ruminating trance. Her black lace veil swished around as she turned to face the stranger.
“My condolences, Your Grace,” He was tall, slim, and almost ethereally pretty. His silver hair and white uniform made him stand out among all the courtiers bustling around the room. How had she not noticed him before?
“Please, there’s no need for formalities,” Wren fretted. “I haven’t even been crowned yet, so you can just call me Wren.” She held out her hand to the stranger. He hesitated before taking it gently in his hand. His smile contained all the mild softness of a lamb. It was so different from all the bravado and false charm that Wren had seen at court. “Very well,” He said. For the first time in months, Wren smiled. “You know, you’re the only one who’s actually spoken to me,” She muttered. The stranger frowned. “Have I overstepped?” He asked. Wren shook her head. “No, of course not!” She explained, her hands gesticulating as if she were trying to wave away his concern. ‘Though your concern is quite cute’, She wanted to add, but thought better of it. He smiled again. “Good,” He breathed. “I thought it might be impolite to not at least say hello. I visit your lands often, though not in such highborn company, so I am unfamiliar with your customs.” As Wren gazed at his awkward, boyish smile, she felt an electric buzz in the air. The stranger’s face fell once again. He must have felt it too. The air in the room distorted with refracted light, an omen that Wren knew all too well. Sure enough, the hunter’s watch on her wrist began to buzz. She turned away to read the alert, and the stranger did the same on his own watch. ‘He’s a hunter like me!’ She realized. They glanced at each other, a look of understanding passed between them.
“Wanderers.”
Wren hiked up her dress and was reaching down for the gun strapped to her leg, when a hand touched her shoulder.
“My Lady,” Captain Jenna whispered. “It’s not wise for you to get involved.” It sounded like a foreign language to be referred to in such a glorified manor by her former captain when, just a few months prior, Wren had been a mere rookie hunter under her guidance.
“I know, Captain,” Wren reasoned, still desperate for her mentor’s understanding and approval. “But if I’m not willing to put myself on the line as a Queen—as a hunter—then what good am I?”
Captain Jenna sighed. “Very well, but we will discuss this later.”
A deafening roar interrupted their conversion. Wren looked up only to find that the stranger was already gone. The crowd screamed as a gaggle of low level wanderers materialized into the room. Guards shouted instructions, but they could barely be heard over the panicked stampede. Wren was pushed to-and-fro by terrified courtiers as she readied her weapon of choice. As soon as a clearing opened in the chaos, she unleashed a hail of bullets on the intruders. She counted 1…2…3 total on her left. On her right—
A flash of light from her peripheral vision blinded her for a moment. When it cleared, she could see the remnants of a wanderer’s energy floating around her. The stranger was standing before her once again. He sheathed his sword, breathing a sigh of relief.
“That was close. Please be more careful next time,” He said. Wren felt her face heat up in embarrassment. She had allowed the chaos to get the better of her and failed to clock the wanderer closing in on her from the right. Wren sighed, wiping sweat from her brow. The moment her arm left her vision, the stranger had disappeared once again. Wren’s head was spinning trying to make sense of this strange individual.
After assessing the damage caused by the wanderers, it was decided that the coronation would be postponed. Not that Wren was complaining. She had enough on her plate as is, and she wasn’t yet prepared to take on her sister’s position. From the little contact they had, Wren could sense that the crown weighed heavy on her. Captain Jenna walked briskly around the destroyed coronation chamber.
“What if we had it somewhere else?” She asked.
“Out of the question!” The High Priestess balked. “This coronation chamber was specially designed to invoke the power of the almighty universe. It has been the site of every Royal Coronation since…”
The High Priestess’s rant faded into the background as Wren surveyed the scene. Her trained hunter’s eyes scanned over every crack and scorch mark.
“I feel like we’re not addressing the root of the problem,” Captain Jenna interjected. “How did wanderers get into this chamber, or even the Palace for that matter?”
“That’s what we’re investing Captain,” A security guard spoke up. “These flux stabilizers are state-of-the-art. Wanderers should not have been able to emerge in here.”
“Well, until that matter is resolved,” Wren spoke up. “I forbid any public events at the Palace. We should also keep only essential staff here to reduce the risk of casualties.”
“But Your Grace-“ The Chamberlain began.
“This is not up for debate,” Wren snapped.
“Your reasoning for not wanting to use the Palace is sound,” Captain Jenna said. “But we still need a secure location for you to perform your duties.”
As Wren searched for an answer, a servant rushed in.
“My Lady,” She gave a polite bow. “The Royal Physician is here. Should I tell him to wait?”
“No, I’ll be there shortly.” Wren said. She couldn’t keep Dr. Zayne waiting when he had other patients to be attending to. It’s not surprising that he wanted to check in after the incident during the coronation. She turned toward Captain Jenna and the High Priestess one last time.
“We’ll figure something out,” She stated resolutely before hurrying out the door.

Went to Pride with kid, 14yo, yesterday. We saw a band setting up on the stage - looked like a teen riot grrrl combo. When they started playing, we were about half a block away, looking at rainbow swag. I said "Oh, cool. They've got the DS-1, classic grunge distortion pedal." Kid was like "Uh.... okay."
Kid did enjoy their sound and wanted to get their info so we went back behind the stage after their set to talk to them. The guitar player, maybe 17yo, was carrying a homemade F/X board and sure enough - that orange block was right in the middle. I was happy to tell her I've played with a lotta fuzzboxes over the years and I always come back to the DS-1.
Also, my kid is apparently cool. Other kids were coming up the whole time to say "I love your boots/outfit/hair."
Name of the band was Pyewacket, from Lynchburg VA. They don't have a Bandcamp. They're probably on websites that only Zoomers know about.

The guitar is an HSS (humbucker, single, single, referring to the pickups) strat style guitar and I like to think it has a silver anodized pickguard like this one

the pedals are a bit harder cause idk my pedals buttttt
the orange one i think is a Boss DS-1X or DS-2 Distortion

the white one looks like this fender FTN-1 Tuner

if I'm being honest all wah pedals look the same to me so uh. this Vox VRM-1 Wah looks about right idfk

the pink one idk. like i should know it I've seen it, I feel like I've tried it before but I'm blanking so hard and searching "pink guitar pedal" into google is not helping
I thought it was an Ibanez Analog Delay Mini, it isn't, but here's that for reference

Why there are so many diverse Tube Screamers?
Recently, I realized that I had never built a Tube Screamer before. This gap must be filled. It also makes sense to figure out which Tube Screamer I need and which is better for you. After all, if you play an electric guitar, then you probably need it in your life!
The Tube Screamer is probably the most popular of all guitar pedals. Especially if you count in numerous clones, mods, and pedals built based on the Tube Screamer circuit.
The scheme has proven to be so fitting that it suits most styles of guitar music, from light rock and blues to the heaviest styles with eight-string, low-tuned guitars.
The Tube Screamer has a nice-sounding overdrive of its own, ready for the clean channel of a pedal platform. It can also help to overdrive a vintage amp.
Or it can make the sound of a modern high-gain amplifier more focused by emphasizing the desired frequencies and preventing the amplifier from choking and squealing due to an excess of unwanted frequencies. And ensure the notes are legible while maintaining the warmth of the solo.
The legendary green pedal with a rectangular button and the number 808 in the name entered the market in 1979. Its name did not contain the phrase "Tube Screamer." It was produced not by Ibanez but by another Japanese company, Maxon. It continued to make the OD-808 and OD-9 for Ibanez and under its own brand.
Maxon employee Susumu Tamura not only developed the circuit and case for the Overdrive OD808 but also came up with the name Tube Screamer Overdrive Pro, which is already for the Ibanez TS808.
Today, early examples of the Maxon OD808 and Ibanez TS808 are highly collectible. This screenshot from Reverb shows the prices that are considered not that high. However, there's always a chance to find it in a pawn shop or local market.
Like most guitar pedals and amps, the Tube Screamer's circuit was not designed from scratch. Enthusiasts of guitar electronics and analog synthesis love to disassemble the products of their colleagues and improve or rearrange something in them to create unique devices based on what they have learned.
In 1977, the Roland BOSS Corporation, also from Japan, released the OD-1 overdrive pedal. Let's look at its diagram, starting from the power stage in the lower left corner.
The power socket is connected through diode D4 and resistor R15. Together with capacitors C11 and C8, R15 forms a U-shaped power filter.
Why is diode D4 needed? To protect against reverse polarity, the circuit has a Zener diode D5. It also protects the pedal from overvoltage above 11 volts. Diode D4 does not act as a rectifier either since the pedal is designed to be powered by a DC adapter.
In the post about the legendary BOSS DS-1 distortion, we've already seen precisely this power supply circuit. And we have found out that this is not just a filter or additional protection but also an analog simulation of the voltage drop of a 9-volt molten-salt battery. This stage is found in many early BOSS pedals, improving the tone.
We will not show the bypass JFET circuit since we discussed it in the same article. It's precisely the same, and many enthusiasts don't like it, preferring true bypass instead.
True bypass with LED indication can be implemented using a 3PDT foot switch. You can get by with DPDT if you use the Millennium bypass indicator circuit described in the post on Brown Sound in a box.
The virtual ground, indicated in the diagram by a diamond, is formed by resistors R7 and R8. They have equal resistance values and divide the supply voltage in half. Capacitor C3 grounds the virtual ground for alternating current.
The input and output buffers on transistors Q1 and Q2 are the usual emitter followers.
An overdrive section is built on the operational amplifier U1A, and an active filter is made on U1B. Most of the first BOSS OD-1 pedals used Raytheon's RC3403ADB quad op-amps.
But sometimes, you can find a copy with the uPC4741C chip from the Japanese company NEC. This is neither a counterfeit item nor a refurbished pedal, but a genuinely original BOSS OD-1. Known examples with uPC4741C were produced in 1978.
Roland/BOSS then stopped using the quad op-amp as a dual op-amp, and later pedals contained the 4558 IC with different indexes.
What does the 1977 BOSS OD-1 have to do with it when we're talking about the 1979 Maxon OD808, you might ask? Just have a look at the OD808 diagram.
As you can see, these two schemes have a lot in common! Several components have been swapped for different values compared to the BOSS OD-1. Capacitors C5 and C6 have been added; C9 has been removed.
The D3 diode was also excluded, so clipping became symmetrical instead of asymmetrical. And most importantly, the R14 tone control has been added. It started as a pedal with two knobs; now it has three.
This time, BOSS studied Maxon's overdrive and, in 1981, released the SD-1 Super Overdrive! Here is its diagram.
Some call this practice stealing ideas, but BOSS, Maxon, and Ibanez ultimately benefited from it, as did the guitarists and listeners. The more different pedals with different nuances, the better!
Next came the TS9 and many other Tube Screamers and overdrives from various manufacturers. My pick is the MXR ZW44 circuit.
This is a Zakk Wylde signature pedal; at its core, it is still the same Tube Screamer. Or rather, SD-1 Super Overdrive because the limitation here is asymmetrical.
I enjoy the range of tone, gain adjustments, and how Tube Screamer's volume control affects the amp's overdrive. You can get a lot of different sounds and fine-tune their shades.
Without Tube Screamer, the amp responds to the gain knob input differently because it is the overdrive pedal that determines the frequency bands that will be emphasized. And this is the primary purpose of the pedal.

Understanding the Different Types of Guitar Pedals and Their Uses
Guitar pedals are essential tools for shaping and enhancing your sound, whether you’re jamming in your bedroom or performing on stage. With a plethora of options available, understanding the different types of guitar pedals and their uses can help you create the perfect rig for your musical style. Let’s dive into the world of guitar pedals and explore how they can transform your sound.

1. Distortion and Overdrive Pedals
Distortion and overdrive pedals are the backbone of rock and metal tones. They add grit and sustain to your sound, creating a powerful, crunchy tone. Distortion pedals, like the Boss DS-1, provide a more aggressive sound, ideal for heavy riffs and solos. Overdrive pedals, such as the Ibanez Tube Screamer, offer a warmer, more subtle breakup, emulating the sound of an overdriven tube amp. These pedals are perfect for blues, rock, and country music.
2. Delay and Reverb Pedals
Delay and reverb pedals add space and dimension to your playing. Delay pedals, like the Boss DD-7, create echo effects by repeating your notes at set intervals. They can produce anything from a subtle slap-back to long, atmospheric repeats. Reverb pedals, such as the TC Electronic Hall of Fame, simulate the natural reverberation of different spaces, from small rooms to vast cathedrals. These pedals are essential for adding depth and ambiance to your sound.

3. Modulation Pedals
Modulation pedals offer a variety of effects that can drastically change your tone. Common types include chorus, flanger, and phaser pedals. Chorus pedals, like the MXR M234 Analog Chorus, add a shimmering, doubling effect to your sound, making it richer and more vibrant. Flanger pedals, such as the Electro-Harmonix Electric Mistress, create a sweeping, jet-like sound by mixing delayed signals with the original. Phaser pedals, like the MXR Phase 90, produce a swirling, spacey effect by altering the phase of your signal. These pedals are great for adding movement and texture to your playing.
4. Wah and Filter Pedals
Wah and filter pedals shape the tonal qualities of your sound by emphasizing certain frequencies. Wah pedals, like the Dunlop Cry Baby, create a sweeping, vocal-like effect by rocking a foot pedal back and forth. They are perfect for funk, rock, and expressive solos. Filter pedals, such as envelope filters, automatically respond to your playing dynamics, creating funky, auto-wah effects. These pedals are excellent for adding rhythmic and dynamic interest to your performance.
5. Compression Pedals
Compression pedals, like the MXR Dyna Comp, even out the dynamic range of your playing by boosting quieter signals and taming louder ones. This results in a more consistent and polished sound. Compression is especially useful for clean tones, fingerpicking, and adding sustain to solos. It can help your guitar sit better in a mix, whether you’re recording or playing live.
Incorporating Pedals into Your Rig
When building your pedalboard, consider the order of your pedals, as it can affect your overall sound. A common signal chain might look like this: tuner > wah > compression > overdrive/distortion > modulation > delay > reverb. However, there are no strict rules — experiment with different setups to find what works best for you.

Start with the essentials that match your musical style, then gradually expand your collection. Don’t forget to invest in a good power supply and quality cables to ensure your pedals perform reliably. Guitar pedals are powerful tools for shaping your sound and expressing your musical creativity. By understanding the different types and their uses, you can build a rig that enhances your playing and helps you achieve your desired tone. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, exploring the world of guitar pedals by visiting well known shops like VIP PRO AUDIO in Brooklyn can open up new sonic possibilities and elevate your performances. Happy playing!

Watching the watchdogs: The 5 Ds of US Middle East policy
14 Jan 2024 Washington’s delusion, denial, dishonesty, distortion, and diversion have had disastrous consequences for the region.
"The 5 Ds have long camouflaged realities and fooled the world through the complicity of mainstream media and dishonest or confused officials. They now wither because the truths of American-Israeli policies are out in the open in Palestine and at the International Court of Justice – or hastily buried underground, wrapped in tiny blankets around thousands of babies and children whose tragic deaths confirm the dreadful reality that Palestinian lives still do not matter to Israel or the US government." if i could design my ideal Boss pedal it would be a dual-sized (i.e. 20 series) enclosure with the left half being a standard ds-1 distortion and the right side would be the re-2 space echo,, it would have switchable effect order, and stereo in/out with the same true stereo signal path on both sides so that if you ran a ping pong effect delay into it in stereo, each channel would have their reverb/echo and distortion applied separately in the output.
