Part 1 of my deaf and HoH Outsiders headcanons
Darry:
He's hard of hearing and needs hearing aids although he won't get them because they're too expensive.
Has a degenerative disease that caused him to lose hearing in his right ear. The boys love to bother him with snapping and loudly clapping right next to his ear.
Knows just enough ASL to go around and uses it at work (like: "lunch break" or "can you get that?")
His dad is hard of hearing too.
He's pretty good at reading lips.
If people want to talk to each other without Darry listening in, they'd whisper and turn the lights off, but Darry caught on pretty soon.
He was the one to give everyone their sign name. Almost gave Dally the name "Dirty".
Pony:
•Would be deaf from birth. He was the loudest screamer ever because he couldn't hear himself scream.
Darry probably tried to give him away because of how much he was screaming.
He got his first hearing aid when he was 7 and would just sit in random places listening to sounds for hours. In the beginning, it was overwhelming and he couldn't keep them on for more than two hours but eventually learned to love them.
Sometimes will take his hearing aid off when he's arguing with someone. He did it once to Darrel who took them away for a week. He cried and apologized after that.
Sometimes forgets he's deaf and would complain about a noise and people would just tell him "take off your ears then."
Doesn't use ASL much anymore because of his hearing aids but learned it when he was younger with his parents. Mostly just uses it with Johnny now or with his brothers when the tv is too loud or when they're on opposite sides of a room.
Liked to 'listen' to hisother talk by putting his hand on her throat to feel the vibrations.
Can't really read lips but can recognize the words they use the most (tuff, cars, names, swears)
Two-bit :
Became hard of hearing in his right ear after an accident that had to do with firecrackers when he was four. Constantly hears a faint ringing.
Never told anyone because he just forgot about it and thought it was normal.
Had a "don't you guys hate it when your ear rings and you can't hear shit?" moment when he was fifteen and everyone looked at him like he was insane.
Turns the volume up way too loud.
Doesn't know ASL or how to read lips escept for all the swear words. Signs random sentences ("Eat my anus, turtle")

Why Crunchyroll can suck it if they think they're gonna get any more than 2-4 dollars from me tops:
Because Deaf and HOH people deserve entirely better than to think Denji the Chainsaw Man (possible spoilers) said, "I won't know a damn thing." instead of "I WON'T OWE A DAMN THING!" >>;;
Yeah consider me less than impressed with these subtitles.

I have a request that I've been sitting on for a minute for a multitude of reasons, the main one being research and brainstorming because I think it's a wonderful request and I want to do right by it.
the premise of it is COD men and women with a deaf/hard of the hearing reader. super cool, yeah?
this is for the anon (and anyone else can most certainly chime in, the more, the merrier because I love getting different perspectives), what are some things you'd like to see in this request? what do you think I should avoid in order to prevent writing misconceptions and coming off as offensive? any insight (that you're comfortable with sharing of course) is welcome!
#writing advice#call of duty#deaf and hard of hearing#this will absolutely help me in the future too.

Deaf (Sorda)

Movies watched in 2025
Sorda (2025, Spain)
Director & Writer: Eva Libertad (based on her own short film)
Mini-review:
This was quite a pleasant surprise. I went in with limited expectations and came out feeling I had just watched something very special. For starters, it's probably the best and most sensitive representation of deafness I've seen. I could tell Eva Libertad had researched the topic in all the right ways. On top of that, I'm pretty sure all the deaf and hard-of-hearing characters are played by actual deaf and hard-of-hearing actors. Still, it's a pretty intimate affair, so it probably wouldn't be as effective without the stunningly layered performances by Miriam Garlo and Álvaro Cervantes. I'm not sure if Deaf (Sorda) will get much of a worldwide distribution, but I'd definitely recommend watching it if you get the chance.

Cochlear implants are forced on infants around 6 months. An irreversible surgery that can fail terribly is forced on babies. All to make them hearing and therefore fit in with all of hearing society. Then parents of the baby don’t have to teach them sign or learn sign themselves. It’s fucked
Hearing aids are less bad cause it isn’t a surgery but they’re forced on children extremely young without any regard to what the child actually wants. Mine had a child lock on the battery so I couldn’t turn them off. I was constantly over stimulated and stressed out bc of how much noise there was. People get upset with me for not wearing them when it should be my choice
compulsory abledness also (partially) explains why disability aids are forced onto some people and denied from others
prosthetic limbs are forced onto amputees whether they want them or not because the goal is to make disabled people look as abled as possible. whereas, all sorts of people who would benefit from mobility aids are often denied them until it’s a “last resort” because! you guessed it! the goal is to make us look as abled as possible
neither person in this situation is privileged. it’s just that the same harmful phenomenon impacts different groups in different ways

real accessibilityheads know that
1. all the non english films have subtitles
2. many of the listed films do have subtitles
3. there are subtitle extensions like substital that offer subtitle tracks for free.
you can either download a subtitle track separately (archive.org offers these sometimes actually) and then sync it through substital OR:
there are many offers for different languages, these are subtitles that WILL sync to this video because it only searches things that are the same runtime.
i know this because i used to watch tons of international films and tv without english subtitles available! and this is awesome. and super functional.
thanks for listening.
#thanks guys#original content#resources#links#archive.org#also to be clear: deaf and hard of hearing people absolutely 100% know about these resources#& this is the last im speaking on all this
