I still believe the craziest form of computer program storage format from the 1980s is the cassette tape. Logical I get it but to store entire programs on little tape (that I only remember using to play music) is just crazy to me. Idk
Agreed, cassette tape for data storage was really clever. The concept had its heyday was the 1970s in a wide variety of encoding schemes for different computer platforms. It did persist into the 80s, mostly in Europe, while the US switched to floppy disks as soon as they were available for systems. The majority of my Ohio Scientific software is on cassette.

Talking with UK vs. US Commodore 64 users in particular will highlight the disparity in which storage mediums that were commonplace. I've got a few pieces of software on tape for mainly the VIC-20, but I rarely bother to use it, because it's slow and annoying. To be fair, Commodore's implementation of data storage on tape is pretty rock solid relative to the competition. It's considered more reliable than other company's but Chuck Peddle's implementation of the cassette routines are considered quite enigmatic to this day. He didn't document it super well, so CBM kept reusing his old code from the PET all the way through the end of the C128's development 7 years later because they didn't want to break any backward compatibility.
The big thing that really made alot of homebrewers and kit computer owners cozy up to the idea was the introduction of the Kansas City Standard from 1976. The idea of getting away from delicate and slow paper tape, and moving towards an inexpensive, portable, and more durable storage medium was quite enticing. Floppy disk drives and interfaces were expensive at the time, so something more accessible like off the shelf audio tapes made sense.
I've linked two places you can read about it from Byte Magazine's February 1976 issue below (check the attribution links).
You might recognize a familiar name present...
There are a few ways to encode binary data on tape designed to handle analog audio, but the KCS approach is to have 1's be 8 cycles of 2400Hz tone, and 0's be 4 cycles of 1200Hz tone. I say cycles, because while 300 baud is the initial specification, there is also a 1200 baud specification available, so the duration of marks vs spaces (another way of saying 1's and 0's), is variable based on that baud rate. Many S-100 computers implemented it, as do a few contemporary proprietary designs.
The big 3 microcomputers of 1977 that revolutionized the industry (Apple II, Commodore PET 2001, and Tandy TRS-80 Model I) each have their own cassette interface implementation. It kept costs down, and it was easy to implement, all things considered. The Apple II and TRS-80 use off-the-shelf cassette deck connections like many other machines, whereas the original variant of the PET had an integrated cassette. Commodore later used external cassette decks with a proprietary connector, whereas many other companies abandoned tape before too long. Hell, even the original IBM PC has a cassette port, not that anybody bothered to use that. Each one used a different encoding format to store their data, rather than KCS.
Here's a sample of what an OSI-formatted tape sounds like.
And here's a Commodore formatted tape, specifically one with VIC-20 programs on it.
I won't subject you to the whole program, or we'd be here all day. The initial single tone that starts the segment is called the "leader", I've truncated it for the sake of your ears, as well as recorded them kinda quietly. I don't have any other tape formats on hand to demonstrate, but I think you get the idea.
You can do alot better than storing programs on tape, but you can also do alot worse -- it beats having to type in a program every time from scratch.

☀️Was SEVENTEEN’s Formation Written in the Stars?☀️
✨ A deep-dive into their soul contracts, past-life bonds & divine purpose ✨
So, bestie, buckle up because we’re about to unlock the cosmic archives of SEVENTEEN and why these 13 souls literally HAD to come together in this lifetime. I shuffled the deck, asked the universe some hard-hitting questions, and let the cards spill all the divine tea. And oh boy, it’s giving past-life contracts, karmic debts, and higher spiritual missions. ☕✨
💫 Their Collective Soul Archetype – Prayer
First off, the very core of SEVENTEEN is wrapped in PRAYER energy. This isn’t just about making music for fun—this group is a divinely orchestrated answer to a call. Maybe it was their own souls that prayed for this union across lifetimes, or maybe a higher force (yep, the universe itself) manifested their bond. They were MEANT to come together. No coincidences, just straight-up cosmic alignment. 🔮💜
⏳ Their Past-Life Connection – Temple
Now, this is where it gets spicy. Temple suggests SEVENTEEN’s souls were together before in a setting deeply tied to spiritual devotion, discipline, and sacred bonds. Were they monks? A brotherhood? A group of divine scholars?? 👀 Whatever it was, their past lives were ALL about dedication to a higher cause. And guess what? That same devotion translates into their teamwork, their discipline, and their unity now.
🔥 Their Karmic Debt or Shared Mission – Thanatos & Aletheia
Whew. These two cards together are SCREAMING transformation and truth. Thanatos is death, rebirth, and letting go of the past, while Aletheia is raw, undeniable truth. SEVENTEEN isn’t here just to make music; they’re here to break illusions and redefine what unity looks like in an industry known for its cutthroat energy. Maybe in past lives, they struggled with separation, ego, or loss—but in this lifetime, they’re here to show that true connection is unbreakable. 💀✨
🌙 Soul Family Energy – Crone
Ooof, the Crone card tells me these boys have old souls and have been doing this soul contract thing for eons. They’re like a soul guild—an ancient, wise energy that came back together for a higher purpose. Their dynamic is almost psychic; they understand each other without words, and their growth as a group is deeply spiritual. It’s not just talent—it’s destiny.
💖 The Divine Force That Brought Them Together – Agape & Eternal Child
HOLD UP. Agape is unconditional, divine love, and Eternal Child is pure, untamed spirit. SEVENTEEN was formed out of pure cosmic love. They are souls that thrive in joy, freedom, and genuine connection. They bring a childlike wonder to the industry, reminding everyone that passion > profit, and real artistry is soulful and authentic. This group is here to heal others simply by existing and radiating their energy. 🌈
👑 S.Coups’ Soul Role – Maiden, Cave & Dead End
Wow, wow, wow. As leader, S.Coups embodies the Maiden—open-hearted, intuitive, and protective over the group's energy. But the Cave & Dead End? That’s heavy. His past-life role might have been the one who lost everything, the one who carried burdens alone, the one who sacrificed for the collective. In this lifetime, his soul is healing that karma by leading with wisdom instead of fear. He’s their spiritual protector, even when things feel impossible. 🛡️
💞 The Core Emotional Connector – Siren & Mother
Okay, let’s talk about the emotional glue of the group. The person who holds the deepest connection to everyone, emotionally and spiritually, is symbolized by Siren & Mother. This means they have a hypnotic energy—someone who pulls people in, creates harmony, and nurtures the group's spirit. My guess? Jeonghan. 👀
🛤️ Soul Contract Pairs – Thread & Bridge
Two members share a Thread & Bridge connection, meaning one pulls the other forward, and the other holds them steady. It’s an unbreakable past-life tie. One of them might’ve been the other’s protector, guide, or karmic mentor before. DK & Woozi energy? Possibly.
💘 Another Soulmate Pair – Lover
We’ve got another divine soul bond here. This isn’t necessarily romantic (unless you want to interpret it that way 👀), but it’s deeply spiritual and magnetic. This pair knows each other on a soul level. Their bond has existed across lifetimes. Hmm… Joshua & Jeonghan, anyone? 👀
🔥 The Shadow Energy – Flame, Gnosis & Vessel
Not everything is sunshine and rainbows. The Flame represents raw passion and fire, Gnosis is hidden knowledge, and Vessel is the physical form. This means their biggest spiritual challenge is staying grounded despite their massive spiritual intensity. The group has to balance their divine purpose with their human experience.
🌊 Their Higher Calling – Ocean
They’re meant to be fluid, ever-expanding, and limitless. SEVENTEEN’s energy is like the ocean—depths unknown, constantly moving, and impossible to contain. Their legacy will ripple through generations. 🌊
🔮 Their Future Evolution – Kiss, Castle & Shapeshifter
Hold up—Kiss, Castle & Shapeshifter?? This tells me SEVENTEEN’s final evolution is something unimaginable right now. The Kiss means they’ll always be bonded, no matter what. The Castle? They’re building something huge—legacy level. And Shapeshifter? Expect them to completely transform into something new and unexpected in the future.
👀 Bottom of the Deck – Mask
One last little secret… there’s more to SEVENTEEN’s destiny than meets the eye. Their public image is only a fraction of the real story. The universe isn’t showing all its cards yet.
Final Thoughts
🔥 SEVENTEEN isn’t just a group—they’re a cosmic soul family. 🔥 They were destined to reunite after lifetimes of devotion. 🔥 Their energy is divinely protected and meant to inspire the world. 🔥 They will transform into something even greater.
So yeah… they were 100% written in the stars. 🌟💜
✨ That’s all for now, besties! Drop your thoughts, theories, and biases in the comments because this reading unlocked a whole dimension. 💓🫠💙💛✨️

Travelling alone (when I'm well enough to do it) is so relaxing to me. I love being alone in a crowd. I love no one knowing me or looking at me, I love drifting through it all just taking everything in. Just vibing and watching and listening and breathing and being in tune with everything around me in private and peace. (Here's where I love technology too, because it's possible these days to talk to literally no one for the entire day, even though there's people everywhere. Not even at a store.)
I love having no schedule, no expectations, no obligations, not having to respond to anyone's needs, not monitoring anyone's feelings, not anticipating anything, not mediating between people, not being a connector, not everyone's "adapter", not seeking harmony and unity and trying to bring other people there. I love not having to try to make anyone see my point because my business is no one else's business in this time and space.
But I don't feel lonely or alone at all, I feel so connected to everything and everyone, on my terms. No secret, I have weak ego boundaries. Your pain is my pain, your happiness is my happiness, when it's in my immediate awareness. Your lungs are my lungs. To me, the people on this deck of the ship seem to all breathe at once, like my nerves extend to every corner of my area of awareness. It's peaceful here right now, because no one's physical or emotional state seems to differ too greatly from each other and I can just slip into the semi drowsy morning coffee feels. The "we made it to the ship in time and nothing here is open yet except for this cafe so let's stop and do nothing much" state of the group that is often only achieved at a time like this, in this hectic world. When people are pretty much blocked from doing anything else for a moment, they can finally allow themselves to relax. Everyone is somewhere between tranquility and enough activeness for casual, not emotionally exciting conversation and there seems to be a silent agreement that no one talks to loudly. The only crack in the peace is a few children getting stressed at a distance but even that is right below the discomfort line, their parents can answer their needs quickly enough for them to calm down, cry just a little and then calm down again and so on. The pace everywhere is slow enough for the waiters not to be stressed either. The sound of the plates being piled on top of each other is unhurried, not aggressive, more like a wind chime in a comfortable breeze.
It's the perfect moment, really. But I'm also not bound to it. I'm not particularly responsible for anything. If this environment got too much, I could leave and find a quiet corner and not explain to anyone. No one would wonder where I was or miss me, and that's a necessary freedom sometimes. Some of this is a symptom of my own overcommitment at life in general, for sure, some of it just an introvert thing, but either way, I'm looking for balance.
I don't think people often get it.
People ask me how can I do what I do, like it's incomprehensible to them, but like they also believe it comes out of nowhere, like it's just something I can do intrinsically... Like when characters talk to me in my head so much that I write a novel in a month. Or when people around me are miscommunicating, and I immediately know how to reword what each is saying in a way that won't go over the other person's head this time. Or when I anticipate someone's actions before everyone else, or I seem to immediately know where items that someone lost are, retracing someone's steps even though I wasn't there.
It's not something that "just happens". They just don't see how much of the work is done during my alone time, and that's why they may not realise how crucial it is to me, to just be alone unbothered and relax, take everything in and also "find my centre" mentally. If I'm overwhelmed I'm a completely useless barely functioning soulless mess, because I can't distinguish myself from the noise. I can't feel anything because I feel everything. I can't see anything because I see everything. It all just blurs together. It's alone that I feel myself and my priorities, and it's alone in a crowd that I come up with the frameworks and principles through which to navigate the mess of life when I participate in it more actively. I need to be alone enough to strengthen all that and remind myself, because the longer I am with other people and the longer I need to be active among them, the more it all starts to fade away and be replaced with what everyone else wants or needs in the moment. There's a pressing need to find the compromise between all of that, and if I'm overwhelmed and no one is listening, what do I do? I compromise myself, my needs, even my core values at worst, because the big picture is the most important and you can only change yourself. Also my senses just get clouded from all the sensing.
And I guess I'm still just not good enough at saying no and not giving up my boundaries at the face of anything from anyone that feels any amount of pressing to me. That's why being away from everything feels so freeing. Because I literally can't answer most people's needs from here. There's no pressure to mould myself into anyone else, like they are a solid puzzle piece and I'm an easily adjustable one. I don't really know what my shape is when I'm alone, but I do know that it's comfortable.
#personal#pros and cons of the group oriented introvert?#music started playing behind me too loud i'm off#although it's really good jazz actually hmm i think i'll listen at a distance#travel log?

Wait a second, this takes place in 2384 while Lower Decks takes place in 2380 but in Lower Decks there's a Voyager-D while this is the Voyager-A and the Voyager-B appeared in 2041 in an episode of Picard.
What the in the deepest pits of Tartarus did they do to the Voyager ship series' time stream in this show?
No wonder the Voyager-J has seemingly detached nacelles, the connectors must be quantum-phased from the time shenanigans, rather than being four-dimensional.

White landing lights illuminate as you make your approach, having completed the objectives of this sortie. An enemy had taken control of a location and all 35 tons of you were deployed to retake it.
It was the same story you’d heard dozens of times. Maybe even hundreds.
Enemies change, locations change, objectives stay the same. When you’re sent in, you kill. No nuance, no ifs, ands, or buts. Your Handler points you at a target, and you kill it.
Are there hostages? Someone else comes in to extract.
Asset recovery? A clean-up crew will take care of that.
Demolitions? You kill combatants, not destroy infrastructure. Someone else will tend to that.
The bay doors open up and you guide your mechanical body in as precisely as you have every time before. And on the flight deck she’s waiting for you.
The voice in your head.
She makes a point to meet you after every sortie, success or failure. Success this time. She’s holding something in her hand. Her other hand beckons you down to her level. Your canopy opens and you kneel down. She reaches up and cradles the vessel in your cockpit, unplugging the main connector.
You’re seeing out of your human eyes now, and it takes a moment to adjust. Slowly your senses return. Vision becomes less blurry, the sounds of the flight deck becoming clearer, the taste of the disgusting slurry they feed you to allow your frail human form to take the Gs.
And you feel your Handler holding you. Squeezing you. You can hear clearly her monotone words of praise and see the detached look on her face. She may not sound or look like it, but you know she cares about you. You know that she is proud of you.
You see her absent hand, holding something small and shiny. She fiddles with it for a moment, and in that time you realize it’s a wrapper. She holds the unwrapped food in front of you and you catch a smell.
It’s chocolate.
Not just that, but it’s your favorite brand, favorite flavor.
She breaks it apart and feeds it to you, piece by piece. Your human body still adjusting to your return makes fine movement difficult.
Smell and taste are strange sensations for you. Visual, auditory, tactile information. All vital for maximum combat effectiveness. But smell? Taste? Those are luxuries. Unnecessary distractions.
But at times like this, when you're ripped from the safety of your true body. Those sensations bring comfort and security.
She brings those things to you.
Your Handler.

Willing Mode
Media - Star Wars The Force Awakens Character - Petty Officer Thanisson Couple - Thanisson X Reader Reader - Y/n Rating 18+ Semi Non Con / Unaware/ voyerisum/ masturbation Word Count 1209

Thannison walked the ship trying to find something to do with his days. Most everyone was in stasis for the trip across the galaxy. But he got offered ten times the pay in order to be the one guy who stays up for the whole year alone just to make sure the ship ran properly. It was all done by the automated computers so he was only there to press the occasion error button or fix a jammed connector. But it was fun the ship had everything he could dream of pool, cinema, gym, gaming hall, it really was paradise. But or course... After a few months alone... He was getting kinda lonely. And not just for talking with friends but also... Really lonely. And the automatic fleshlight in his quarters just wasn't cutting it anymore.
He walked into the women's stasis deck and tried to see if maybe he could find some pretty girl to look at. But all the pods had privacy screens so no one could see them. Well... Almost all of them.
All the pods had a lock so if anyone tried to turn off the privacy screen it would demand a password and lock him out but... But One pod didn't. It simply asked if he wanted to make the pod visible.
Thannison's eyes widened with excitement. His mind raced with dirty thoughts, imagining the beautiful woman inside,, his heart pounding in his chest. “Hello there, pretty lady,” Thannison whispered seductively, his voice trembling with anticipation. “I won't tell if you won't.” He reached out and slowly pressed the button, revealing the stunning woman inside. Thannison's mouth went dry as he drank in the sight of her beauty.
The stasis pods required them to be naked. Will a tube inside her mouth for air. And another holding her pussy for waste removal and so they could get fucked by dildos and sucked with vibrators if ever they got horny in their statis.
Thannison's breath caught in his throat as he beheld the sight before him. The girl's naked body, suspended in stasis, was a feast for his eyes. Her skin seemed to glow in the dim light of the stasis chamber, and Thannison couldn't help but let out a low growl of appreciation. Her breasts, just big enough to jiggle with each gentle breath, were perfect. And that ass! Round and plump, begging to be spanked and caressed. Thannison's cock began to stiffen in his pants as he imagined himself between her thighs, burying his face in her sweet pussy. Thannison's eyes travelled down the girl's body, taking in every curve and contour. His hands began to tremble with anticipation as he reached out towards the stasis pod. He knew he shouldn't, that it was wrong to touch a sleeping woman like this. But he couldn't help himself. His hormones were in overdrive, and he needed release.
Gently, almost reverently, Thannison placed his hands on the edge of the stasis pod, leaning in closer to get a better look at the girl's face.
Her features were soft and peaceful, her full lips slightly parted as she breathed deeply. Thannison's heart raced as he imagined kissing those lips, tasting her sweet breath on his own. He looked at the information on her profile that the pod displayed.
Her name was Y/n.
Thannison's eyes widened as he read Y/n's dream description. A fantasy land with dragons and knights? His mind immediately began to wander, imagining all sorts of dirty scenarios involving the beautiful girl and himself in a world filled with danger and passion. He couldn't help but let out a low chuckle as he pictured himself as her brave knight, protecting her from harm while also taking advantage of her willing body.
Thannison's eyes never left Y/n's face as he quickly unzipped his jumpsuit, releasing his rock-hard cock. He began to stroke himself slowly, relishing the feeling of his own skin against his shaft. His breath came in short, sharp gasps as he imagined plunging his dick into Y/n's tight pussy, filling her with his cum while she slept. The thought was too much to bear, and Thannison could feel himself getting closer to the edge. He pumped his cock faster, his balls tightening with each passing second.
“Fuck,” he groaned, his voice low and husky. “I need to fuck you so badly, Y/n.”
It was then he saw another option. One he hadn't noticed in his lusty haze. She has turned on willing mode. That must have been why he could turn her privacy off. She purposely choose to allow anyone who was awake to look at her. And also as part of the mode allowed them control of her vibrators to fuck her. It wasn't a common thing people used but some people had kinks that liked getting used by strangers.
Thannison's eyes widened in shock. His mind raced with possibilities, imagining all sorts of dirty things he could do to the beautiful girl while she lay helpless in her stasis pod. He knew he shouldn't take advantage of her like this, but she put it into willing mode! She was allowing it to possibly happen! The temptation was too strong to resist. With a low growl of determination, Thannison reached out and activated the mode, giving him control over Y/n's vibrators. The stasis pod beeped softly as it prepared for use, and Thannison couldn't help but let out a low chuckle of anticipation.
Thannison placed his hands on the edge of the stasis pod, leaning in closer to get a better look at Y/n's face watching for any sign of reaction as he slowly increased the vibrations of the devices buried deep inside her. A soft moan escaped her lips, and Thannison felt a surge of excitement course through his body. His cock throbbed in his pants as he imagined plunging into her tight pussy while the vibrators worked their magic on her sensitive flesh. With a low growl of determination, Thannison began to thrust his hips, mimicking the motion of her toys.
“Fuck yes,” he groaned, his voice low and husky with lust. “I'm going to fuck you so hard, Y/n. You're going to love every second of it.”
Y/n squirmed a little reacting to the feeling arching her back and moaning softly,
Thannison watched intently as Y/n's body responded to the stimulation, her back arching off the bed as she moaned softly. The sight of her writhing in pleasure only made Thannison harder, and he began to thrust his hips more urgently. His other hand found its way to his cock, stroking it in time with his movements as he lost himself in the fantasy.
“Fuck yes,” he groaned, his voice low and husky with lust. “I can't wait to bury my cock in your tight little pussy, Y/n. I'm going to make you scream my name until you can't remember your own.” He groaned, “The moment you wake up… I promise…”
Thannison watched in awe as Y/n's body tensed, her back arching off the bed as she came hard. The sight of her squirting on her vibrators was too much for Thannison to handle, and he felt his own release building at the base of his spine. With a low growl of determination, he quickened his thrusts, pumping his cock harder and faster as he imagined plunging into her. Thannison's eyes rolled back in his head as the first waves of pleasure crashed over him. With a guttural cry, he exploded, sending spurts of thick, white cum across Y/n's stasis pod. The sight of his seed splattering against the clear plastic was too much for Thannison to handle, and he continued to pump his cock frantically, wanting to cover every inch of the pod with his essence.
"Rest up, beautiful, he whispered, leaning in close to brush his lips against the pod giving it a small kiss before he went back to his work.

Fake fic title: Stardust, starstruck
Anthony/Curtis not true
They get nicknames on the ship. The only rule is you aren’t allowed to pick them yourself.
Thankfully Curtis blurted out “silver- because AG” before anyone else had a chance to suggest something shitty. The scousers stick together. A loose alliance with the northern lot. Anthony- sometimes silver sometimes AG- divides his meals between Curtis -CJ and Trent - who weirdly is just Trent - or Dan and Claudia depending on shifts.
Their manager- Gaffer and he’s never anything else only Mad Dog calls him by name - loves that there are groups that are split over multiple departments, the kind of right place right time collab that meant Anthony -AG- could tell Dan - little John- between shovelling bites of chicken flavoured soy and greens into his mouth that the brass connectors had 25percent more connectivity than the copper.
They will make Centri-six in two days less than expected. Fresh food. Air. There was a collective cheer over all the decks. The Southern teams still keep themselves seperate though, the wounds of the past linger long and deep.
AG doesn’t go to the bridge much. The glamour boys are all up there Jude - matador - and Bukayo - Starboy - hooked up to the navigation and weapons decks, half man half machine for 13 hour shifts at a time.
Matador had stumbled after being unhooked, Trent was there instantly to support him, sharing the stumble glaring at anyone who was looking.
It’s 62 hours until they land, the blinking green countdown corrects him to 61:34:29…28…27… he looks up at the ceiling. It’s worth it. To go to the beach with its golden sandy beaches with Curtis, to drink a cold beer under the soft sunlight that rests on their skin like its own touch.

not me whos been trying to ignore my desire of getting into mixtapes and physical media due to cost of entry getring tempted again
Ok, here's what you're gunna do. I want you to find whateva kind of clearance or thrift- whatever the hell store, go to the electronics section. you're gonna look and loot for some tape decks. they come in all sorta sizes and shapes, some are bigger than stacks a' bricks and some will fit right in yer hand. choose whatever fits your budget and space, just make sure it seems to work by plugging it into the wall and seeing if it rewinds and fast forwards but most importantly, has a mic or "input" port, that's the key. make sure it also comes with RCA connectors, aux cord adapters for said connectors, and speakers so you can listen to what you're putting on the mixtape. if you can't find it, go online, check wherever you want and there's even a site online that is selling em for less than 100 USD. Now once you get that in order, get yourself some cassettes, some blank ones. if you're looking for nothin fancy, Maxell UR has some pretty decent ones, they're 45 minutes on each side, and have all clear cases so customization is standard. however, if you want somethin on the fancier and more decorative side, duplication.ca is a great place for getting pre-loaded colorful cassettes, boxes, j cards, you get it. once you have everything needed, plug all the corresponding cords into the left and right, output is where the sound goes out, so plug that cord into the speakers, and input is how the sound goes in, so plug that into wherever, phone, computer, vinyl you get it. If it's a small, hand-sized cassette recorder, usually you don't need the RCA connectors, they already have an aux cord mic and a speaker. now insert the cassette, press pause on the deck, press record, and until you have your music ready, unpause and play the music so it's recorded on. Remember: physical media is key to the preservation of all media, whether it be songs unavailable online or that show you used to watch as a kid that you can't find nowadays. nothing should be tossed out and forgotten because of its inconvenience compared to current technologies.

Defragmenting and hotfixes.
"Oh--my god--!"
The prybar clatters to the deck as Soji jumps back, startled halfway out of her mind by the contents of this particular box. She's not squeamish, not by a mile, but one has to be prepared to see a disassembled corpse in a box. It's not something you spring on a person. She recovers fast but, holy hell, that was a shock to the system.
"Breathe, Soji--it's fine, this is fine--" she mutters and takes a deep, calming breath.
This is actually ideal. Ideal-ish. She had pulled six boxes out of Data's quantum storage. Spoofing his identity had been a real trick, but she'd pulled it off. She couldn't just leave it alone, not once she was told what his storage contained. Allowing a synth (no, he was technically an android) to molder in storage forever was just unacceptable. She'd hoped she'd find him assembled in stasis, like how Alton generated the fractal clones or his golem, but apparently that was not how things were done back in the day.
Distantly, it does occur to her that it would be a lot more gruesome to do that to any of the synths in her generation. They would also probably not survive the experience. She tries not to think too hard about that as she examines his carefully packed bodyparts. His limbs are all intact, if a little creaky from extended storage. She considers parting the skin-layer to repair the wear on the major joints, her tools would support it, but she can't quite bring herself to start…peeling him. Even with good intentions, it seems like undue torment. His torso has a few deteriorated parts, as well as a few that are seized up from time in storage. It'll take her a while to repair, but no part of it is in poor condition.
His head is in the worst shape of any of it, by far. His scalp has already been drawn back and pinned aside. The underlying mechanicals and circuits are a mess--it looks like something was ripped off the board, there are bent connectors, missing pieces, and a host of shorted components. He suffered some serious cranial trauma and then a power surge.
Soji's inspection feels a little bleak--she isn't sure she can fix this but she's certainly going to try.
"You're lucky I've been doing cybernetic extractions for the last three years," she tells the disembodied head. It's inactive so, unsurprisingly, it doesn't reply. "Alright, let's get you up and running."
It's all the pep talk Soji gives herself before getting up and fetching one of the toolkits she took from the wreckage of the Cube on Coppelius. Her ship isn't impressive or well stocked, not in Soong type mechanical components at least, but she has a portable replicator and all of Alton Soong's notes. Once she has her equipment, she takes the head from the box, turns up the brightness of the overhead lights, and gets to work. @lettherebemonsters
