disabled and chronically ill peeps, gather please for just a second and listen to me ramble
last night, after my seemingly incredibly long shift at work (about 5 hours long), i asked my sibling (He/She) what her pain was at on the pain scale (going from 0 to 10, 0 meaning none and 10 meaning the worst).
his response “about a 2”
i wanted to cry
mine was around a 7, leaning on 8, and had been all day cuz my body has been hating me extra lately for zero reason
my BASELINE, what i am at when i’m chilling and relaxing, literally just where i start from, is at a 4
i told her this and we laughed and i cried some cuz i cannot believe that his pain is at a 2, not even at my baseline, after 5 hours of running around and doing tons of jackshit
and i then asked what his pain is at just normally, just her baseline
GUESS THE FUCK WHAT?!!?
it’s a 0
ZERO, PEOPLE, ZERO
so people really are just existing without pain? so people really can do 5 hours of work and feel barely any pain? so people don’t become more in pain drastically when we walk a lot, or when we do literally anything??
my brain honestly is in denial that her pain was only a 2
and i then asked him how long he was gonna be at a 2, annnnd guessss what? she says it’ll be at a 2 until after she’s rested a bit, then it’ll go back down to a 0 again
it’s the next day, i’m at a 5, leaning towards 6, who knows if that’ll change, and i am absolutely fatigued and exhausted
he’s going out on a date with her boyfriend, and they’re going to a bunch of places
i just want to sleep all day long and literally do nothing
i want to cry so much, but yeah, just so we’re all clear, literally able-bodied people were not lying, their baseline is at a 0
*lays on floor and sobs*

SURPRISE!!!
you get a random status effect! Your thumb dislocated.
You take 1 point of damage and have disadvantage on all dexterity and strength rolls for the next 3 hours.
Every hour you can roll to attempt to relocate it:
Crit success: Perfect relocation! You now have advantage on charisma rolls for an hour.
10-19: You got it into place, but it still hurts.
2-9: Failed. Try again later.
Crit failure: You broke your thumb. Take 1d6 damage and head to the emergency room.
Good Luck!

does anyone else with hEDS sometimes feel like they can’t make a joint feel *right* again? I’m not sure if it popped out of place, but it doesn’t feel right. I can’t get it to crack and feel okay again :/ it’s my left hip and it’s been like this for weeks now. Because of the feeling of it needing to be “right” i’m not sure if it’s a OCD thing, so idk :(

I have learned that laying on my left side makes both hips dislocage, but laying on my right keeps them in place. The problem is that I prefer to lay on my left since it helps with digestion and stomach problems (I don't know why) and I can't now because of safety. Fun.

Stars in Her Eyes

MedWhump May Day 7: Dislocation Summary: JJ dislocates her shoulder on a case and Emily is there to save her. Word Count: ~880 CW: mild vomit warning, not graphic
AO3
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
JJ didn’t really know what had happened. One minute, she had the Unsub in a headlock and was forcing him to the ground. He must’ve swept her legs out and shifted her grip because the next thing she knew she was face first on the ground, the man halfway across the room. She could barely focus on the sudden shift in dynamics with the pain that exploded in her shoulder, making her vision dance with stars.
JJ didn’t mean to cry out, but based on the blurry shout of her name she assumed she had. A stream of curses slipped from her lips as she propped herself up on her non-burning arm, clutching the injured one close to her chest. Her gun was somewhere in the corner of the dusty room, she knew that wasn’t where it should be but she was too busy trying not to throw up to do anything about it.
“Jayje, what's wrong, what hurts?” Emily slid into the room, Morgan and Rossi running past her down the hall. JJ grunted her frustration, jutting her chin out to indicate that Emily should follow the men after the escaped Unsub. She was angry that he had taken her down so quickly, every beat of her heart sent another spike of pain through her arm. God she was going to throw up.
The blonde leaned to the side, retching, the action bringing more tears to her eyes.
“They’ve got him hun, I’m worried about you. Shit JJ,” Emily hissed through her teeth, JJ could practically see the look of concern on her girlfriend's face. Her girlfriend was right, JJ could hear them tackling the man just a few rooms down. Sitting back up with another grimace, JJ finally made eye contact with Emily. Yep, that was the expression she was expecting. The eyebrows pinched tight and lips pursed into a worried frown. It was cute.
“Shoulder,” JJ ground out through clenched teeth. She couldn’t bring herself to look over, but if the pop that she’d heard going down was any indication she had dislocated it. The woman had only heard that once, when she’d fallen out of a tree as a child. It had been her knee then, and she’d promptly passed out. Remaining conscious did not feel like an upgrade.
“Yeah, I see it,” Emily hummed, ghosting her fingers across the area where JJ’s collar bone now sat. She didn’t make contact, but still shuddered at the thought of what had happened. Something about bones freaked her out, but she remained calm for JJ. She had to stay put together for her girlfriend.
“Do you think you can walk out? Is anything else hurt?” JJ paused to consider the question, not confident that she could stand up without support. She’d twisted her ankle on the way down, but that pain was nothing compared to her shoulder.
“Put it back in, just do it please.” It was the only thing that JJ could think of to alleviate the pain. In her experience the setting would hurt a lot, but then it would get so much better. She was confident Emily could do it for her, the woman was practically a superhero.
“Absolutely not. There are medics outside, they’ll do it. You need help walking or what?” Emily reiterated, raising an eyebrow in mild irritation. She wasn’t really mad, just anxious. JJ rolled her eyes, but finally nodded. The only way she was getting out of her was with some help. At least it was Emily and not one of the guys, they would probably be teasing her.
“Okay. One…two…three,” Emily wrapped an arm around JJs middle and hoisted her to her feet, apologizing softly when the blonde let out a gasp of pain. She leaned heavily on Emily for a moment, her vision blurring and swimming as she struggled to readjust through deep breaths.
“Got it?” Emily asked, her lips ghosting across JJ’s temple. The gesture was so soft and kind it made JJ’s heart swell. They were generally very professional at work (outside of the occasional flirting while they did paperwork) but the expression of love made JJ feel safer. Humiliation at being unable to take down the Unsub was slowly beginning to gnaw at her stomach, it was something she was sure would take over as soon as she was able to put more focus on it.
“Deep breaths baby, they’ll put your shoulder back in and it’ll be fine. I’ve got you.” Emily reassured. She didn’t bring up the other thing, the thing she was sure that Emily was aware of.
“You tell anyone I threw up and I’ll make you sleep on the couch for a month.” JJ returned, the threat holding no real weight. The brunette chuckled, a real smile finally poking through.
“You wouldn’t dare. You love me too much.” The declaration held a promise, Emily wasn’t going to share with anyone. JJ smiled too, thrilled to finally be approaching the exit. She knew that as soon as they left the creaky old house they would be bombarded by people, mostly other officers, but she felt better knowing that Emily was there with her. Still unsteady on her feet, she wasn’t entirely sure that she would be able to do it alone.

@whumpril day 12: Dislocation
I am currently recovering from my fourth patella dislocation and thought sharing some of my experiences with them might of interest to whump writers:
The pain from an active dislocation is a weird combination of throbbing and radiating. It's actually kind of dull, but still some how paralyzing. During my most recent dislocation, even though my knee was the only thing actually hurting I couldn't move a muscle without aggravating it. The first time I had a dislocation, I bit my hand until I bled because the sharp pain from biting myself distracted me from the pain in my leg.
In my opinion, the pain is at it's worst right before the bone is relocated. The throbbing gets worse and you can feel a lot of pressure and then right as it relocates there is a really sharp pain that radiates right through you. It only lasts for like a second, but usually feels exactly like it did before the relocation for a few minutes afterwards. (during one of my dislocations I kept telling the EMT's that is hadn't relocated yet even though it had been because the pain was still so bad)
I can't speak for other joint dislocations, but at least with knees, it is really fucking obvious that it's dislocated from a visual stand point. Just imagine your knee cap on the side of your leg. That's as far as I'm willing to explain it.
At least with patellas, it is possible to relocate them on your own. I know at least two methods of doing it, but it takes a lot of will power to actually put yourself through that much pain and I've never been able to actual do it.
This may just be a reflection of my own personality, but it is well within possibility for a character to hide a dislocation (at least initially). I have never actually screamed or cried when I dislocated my patellas, the most vocal I've ever been is swearing under my breath. Twice I have dislocated it in a group of 30+ people and nobody noticed until I called for help. I don't think this is the normal reaction, but if your Whumpee is particularly quiet or stoic, they could pull that off.
I don't know if this is normal or not. But none of my dislocations have ever resulted in any bruising. My leg does swell up like a balloon though.
After this most recent dislocation, I was actually able to bend my leg and put some weight on it for several minutes after it was relocated. Once the adrenaline wore off though and swelling kicked in my muscles seized up and it took me 3 days before I could put weight on it again, and two weeks before I could bend my knee back to 90 degrees (4 weeks out I'm not back at full range of motion yet)
Will power is an incredible thing. When I had my third dislocation I was traveling alone and didn't have anyone to help me. I was able to stand, walk (well...hobble), drive, and was managing pain without any sort of pain killers for a full day until I found out someone was coming to help me out. The second I realized that I didn't have to keep pushing myself onwards, my leg literally gave out underneath me, and I could barely manage to get from my bed to the bathroom for the next couple of days.
When you are recovering from a dislocation, you can't really move the affected body part without a lot of pain. Which either means you're in pain all the time, or at least uncomfortable all the time. This because especially noticeable when you try to sleep (i.e. you don't)

Dislocated Shoulder Whump
Warnings: dislocated shoulder, intense pain, careless/annoyed carewhumper
Heehee here's a short scene where Shadow gets to be a grumpy, reluctant carewhumper when Thomas accidentally dislocates his shoulder during a fight. How inconvenient for Shadow to be forced to help! 😂
Poor Thomas, he never catches a break.
It was too late for Thomas to dodge the soldier rushing toward him. The soldier was making a mad dash for the exit he was standing in front of, and that was the problem: he was standing in front of it.
Thomas tried to scramble out of the way, but was a hair too slow. The soldier was too desperate to escape, and couldn't care less about the human of an object in his path. He charged right through him, accidently clipping him in the shoulder on the way out, hard enough that it sent Thomas slamming into the wall behind him.
As soon as he hit the wall, there was a sickening pop, followed by a zing of sharp pain that ran through his whole right arm, and then he suddenly couldn't move it anymore.
Thomas crumpled to the floor with a gasp as pain radiated throughout his entire arm and shoulder, quickly spreading across his chest. It was an intense, overwhelming agony that overtook him, and he gritted his teeth against it. Out of the corner of his eye, he could Shadow moving nimbly around as she took down the last few soldiers in the room, before she leaned down to pick up her dagger and sheath it again. He could only hope she'd be able to help him out of whatever he'd just gotten himself into. But it hurt... so... much...
-------------------------------------------------------
*Switching to Shadow POV*
Shadow heard the cry of pain, but was too busy fighting to spare the source a glance. Only when she had knocked the last man out did she look over to see Thomas twitching on the floor in pain, one shoulder sticking out at an unnatural angle.
"I… I can't move my arm!" He exclaimed, panicking. "Am I dying? I'm dying, aren't I?!"
Shadow walked over and loomed over him with arms crossed over her chest and rolled her eyes at what she thought to be his over-dramatization, before remembering that Thomas had never experienced a serious injury of any kind before, and it made her understand why he would be so terrified. From his perspective, it must literally feel like he was dying. She could hear his heart racing faster than a rabbit's with adrenaline.
She kneeled next to him with an unhurried sigh and tentatively touched his shoulder, feeling around the muscles to get an idea of how bad the dislocation was. Thomas yelped in pain, and instinctively tried to jerk away, but Shadow put her knee over his stomach and leaned her weight onto him to keep him pinned down.
"Mmhmm, that's definitely a bad one," she said in absent observation after a few moments. Shadow knew how to relocate the joint, but first needed Thomas to stop panicking. She needed his muscles to relax a little to make it easier for the joint to pop back into place... and his hyperventilating was only exacerbating the whole situation.
"Good grief, you're not dying! Pull yourself together," she snapped, exasperated. She could tell that Thomas was on the brink of passing out because of the fast, shallow breaths he was taking, which was causing the carbon dioxide in his blood to drop too low. She let out a weary sigh and put a firm hand on his chest.
"Look at me, listen to my voice. You need to calm down. Slow your breathing, okay? Take a deep breath, and let it out slowly," she instructed sternly, trying to sound reassuring, which certainly wasn't her strong suit.
"Focus on filling your lungs up as full as you can, and then let it all out, and relax. Release the tension. I'm right here to help you, kid. You don't have to keep panicking."
There was something oddly comforting about her words, even though "comforting" was probably the last thing Thomas would use to describe Shadow. Regardless, he tried to focus on her gruff voice, gradually slowing his breathing down increment by increment, feeling his racing heartbeat finally start to calm.
"Good. Now I'm going to put your shoulder back in place, all right? It’s guaranteed to hurt like crazy, but bear with me. Are you ready?" Shadow said, looming over him. She took his wrist in one hand and placed the other near his shoulder.
Thomas nodded weakly, bracing himself.
Shadow gave him a countdown. "Three, two, zero--" In a single sharp, swift motion, she suddenly jerked his arm straight forward, and a loud pop followed as the shoulder joint slid back into place.
It was cruel of her to surprise him with a fake countdown, Thomas distantly thought. He let out a strangled shriek, and had to bite his tongue hard to avoid screaming in agony.
Then, he felt gentle waves of magic flow through his arm, repairing damaged ligament and muscle tissue. It took the edge off his pain, lessening it to a dull throb. One of the many perks of having someone like Shadow as an ally. He finally let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding, relief flooding him.
"See? That wasn't so bad, now, was it?" Shadow smirked knowingly. She put an arm under his back and helped him slowly sit up, before effortlessly pulling him to his feet with surprising strength.
"Let's get out of here before anyone sees us, shall we?"
"Shadow... Thank you. Seriously," Thomas croaked gratefully, gently trying out his newly healed shoulder with a wince. He looked at the floor sheepishly.
Shadow shifted her weight uncomfortably at his sincere gratitude.
"Let's... just try not to ever do that again, all right?" She said tensely.
