another word that the current climate has ruined for me is “bigot.” It feels like “queer.” It gives you a general idea but otherwise it’s nonspecific enough to mean anything and can thus be used to sneak in things that aren’t that (“terfs, kinkshamers, etc” under “bigot,” heterosexuals under “queer”).

imo, bigot also takes the sting out of a word like racist, like how queer takes the firm boundaries out of a word like homosexual, gay or lesbian. bigot can be used to lump all prejudices under one “type” of person and thus contribute to black and white us versus them thinking. a person with one bigotry must also secretly be bigoted against every other marginalized group.

If this person is racist, say racist. If they’re homophobic, sexist, antisemitic, say that. list the prejudices if you have to, even if it’s clunky, but say it. give each of those groups their due. specificity is good.
