Synopsis: Chalcanthite and Coyle are the same in the worst way.

Maybe, if he bothered to, he could've guessed it. Hell, they were so similar, he probably would've guessed it, if given a bit more time... all of the signs were there- all of the pieces, rather. The pieces to the puzzle that was Leland Coyle. Staring at the film reel he himself had just installed, wide eyed and mind ticking like a clock, he's forced to come to a realization that he should've come to a long time ago.

Men like Coyle don't come from nowhere.

"You have to project danger." Of course you do. Chalcanthite wasn't fucking stupid- it was basic shit. If you're strong, the weak can't hurt you. If you're stronger than strong, then the strong can't hurt you. If you are the danger, then nothing can hurt you. Maybe that one should've tipped him off, first.

Brown eyes search the screen, the reagent's gaze erratic, like he doesn't believe what he's seeing as he watches Coyle's twitching form.

"The Law is the medicine for shame." Chalcanthite wonders what that says about the man he was staring at. His mind reels as his brain wracks with possibilities of what kinds of shame would lead to a man drowning himself in his own perceived medicine. He wonders what parts of himself that Coyle's 'medicine' has killed. He hears the door slam open, and he jerks his head to stare at the man that had just barged into the room.

"You only gotta let your guard down once." Chalcanthite's heart races as he watches Coyle take in the scene before him- as he watches the man realize just what it was that the hybrid was watching. Black ears flatted against his head as the officer screams something he can't understand in his own half-dissociative state, and he jumps the barrier between the projector and the seating area. His movements are jerky and clumsy, much more so than usual, as he tries to get away from the other man. The reagent feels bile in his throat as he tries to will away the tremors in his hands. He could never let his guard down- he could never get caught unaware.

They both knew that.

They both knew that.

"They'll hold you down and they'll fuck you dead."

They both knew that.

Heart thudding in his chest, he slams his fist onto the button to call for the transportation shuttle, and when Coyle's close enough- no fucking closer than he has to be- Chalcanthite stuns him. He stuns him, and then he stares, because he doesn't know what else to do. What else can you do ?

Brown eyes feel wide and dry, and Chalcanthite is sure that if he doesn't get himself together soon, he's going to cry, and he can not fucking let that happen. Not in front of him, of all fucking people.

He hears the shuttle grow closer, and Chalcanthite presses his back against the shuttle door in anxious anticipation. Everything hurts- his head hurts, his chest hurts, his stomach hurts- Everything is making too much sense and it's making him feel sick-

Chalcanthite lets out a gasp as he stumbles back into the shuttle just as Coyle comes back to himself, shaking his head free just as the door closes between them. All the dog can bring himself to do is think. All he can do is think, and think, and think-

"... Catch me sleeping. Some day."

Fears like that don't come from nowhere.

They both knew that.
