Your recent train of posts about you-know-who’s book series got me thinking. You once said “The Owl House works as a sort of rebuttal to Harry Potter in a lot of ways”, care to elaborate on that statement? Especially in regards to how The Owl House’s worldbuilding and themes clash with Harry Potter’s?

Oh man... I don't want my blog to be consumed by Harry Potter Hot Takes. I'd prefer to vent most of those feelings through my wizard books instead, it's more productive that way.

So, ok, short version: The Owl House is about a teenager from the mundane world discovering there's a magical world hidden away, goes there to learn magic, and in the process uncovers a plot by an abominable fascist to commit genocide. In very simplistic terms, that is more or less the same plot as Harry Potter.

But the devil's in the details, isn't it? Luz doesn't have any grand inheritance to claim, no prophecy to fulfill, nothing that makes her the most special specialest special person of all time. There's even a whole episode early on where a villain tries to lure her to her doom by claiming she's the chosen one, and the lesson is that NO ONE is "chosen" for greatness - greatness is something you make yourself, not something that's thrust upon you. She is not inherently gifted as a witch - in fact, she struggles harder because she doesn't have a a special bladder true witches are born with, and has to learn an ancient and forgotten method of spellcasting basically from scratch to cast spells at all. She is, emphatically and at times definitely deliberately, the opposite of what Harry Potter is.

So is her academic experience. There's a magic school in this setting, and (at first) it wants nothing to do with Luz because she's human, not a witch, and thus is believed to be incapable of casting spells. So Luz's primary mode of education on magic comes from a private mentor, Eda, who is also a wanted criminal and social outcast because of her disdain for the draconian rules of their society. Eda is an unconventional but magnificent mentor, one who is as willing to try new things and learn new methods as Luz herself, and who helps Luz discover ways to make possible what everyone else claims is impossible. Eventually Luz does convince the magic school to take her in, but in the process she changes how it runs, challenging a lot of its preconceived notions and forcing them to do better.

Which is vital, because the biggest problem facing the society of this magical world is narrow-minded reliance on outdated social categorization. Like HP, people are sorted into categories (covens here instead of houses), which they are then forced to stick to and never dabble in the others. It is explicitly compared to both the concept of tracking in real world education (i.e. forcing kids into a career path early and ONLY giving them education relevant to that one career) and the house system of HP:

And it's wrong. It's both presented as needlessly limiting, terrible for encouraging advancement and growth of both the students and society as a whole, and an immoral system that's only kept alive by the "Well, this is how we've always done it" inertia that keeps so many awful traditions in education alive. And I really do mean it's immoral, because it's the brain child and secretly crucial evil tool of a genocidal fascist.

I kind of cringe at writing those two words since I feel people have been WAY too quick to accuse cartoon villains from children's shows of fascism and genocide - like, Chairface Chippendale writing his name on the moon with a laser would probably kill a shitload of people in real life, but that doesn't mean he's an analogue to Hitler. But Belos, like fellow Disney villain Frollo, is clearly intended to be exactly that: a genocidal fascist. In a world full of magic-fueled absurdist black comedy beats, Emperor Belos stands out as a consistently serious threat, tonally dissonant with his surroundings in a way that makes him chillingly effective as a villain. And like real world powerful bigots, his power primarily comes from the fact that the systems of society favor his mindset over those of outsides like Luz and Eda - all the systems of oppression our heroes chafe against were either created by or worsened by him, with the express purpose of using them to kill everyone and everything in the magical world.

Luz could not be more thematically opposed to her enemy, and the story is incredibly consistent in showing how defeating Belos alone isn't enough, but that the systems that empowered him have to be disproven and dismantled. His enablers must be destroyed or humbled, the prejudices he encouraged must be torn down and fought at every turn, and innovation and progress must be embraced for the good of all. There's so much stuff you could analyze about the themes in that show regarding oppression and the othering of people who are different, and it's all so, SO much more consistent than the discussion of the same themes you'll find in Harry Potter.

Another reason I think Boscha’s inclusion in S3 is justified is that we’re shown someone who is naturally crueler and shittier than others, for whom domination actually makes them feel good about themselves. But they still have the capability to grow as a person like anyone else, and their obsessive attachment to someone who went through the same circumstances and could understand, but rose above that in part because cruelty wasn’t as easy, could still be used as a launching point to think about the others around them, as they mend that relationship to a healthier version of itself.

And then on the other side of the plot is Belos for whom witch hunting makes him feel like a righteous crusader and he’s haunted by his obsessive relationship with Caleb who was also raised in Gravesfield and for whom he did care about, even if he feels no guilt for anyone else beyond Caleb and his clones.

And in the end he had the tools to learn since he was a kid, before he could cement his beliefs as an adult; And really, it is proven a stereotype that old people are stubborn. In reality old people who are stubborn were always stubborn their whole life, while there are old people who are capable of reflection like anyone else, think Eda or Lilith or Gwen for example. Mayhaps some people have no excuse, not even the natural assholes… Oh hey, Kikimora’s there too!

Stanley Pines Evolution Timeline Part 1

Arrival at the Boiling Islands:

As you may know, Stan arrived at the Boiling Islands due to an argument with Ford, the result of which ended with Stan in another universe.

When Stanley fell through the portal, he felt like he was floating.

A few minutes later, he felt the cold of the snow again.

When he looked around, he saw that he was in a snowy area, but he didn't recognize Ford's cabin, so he felt that something wasn't right

When he got up, he saw that there was a very strange landscape, with a giant skull and what seemed to be the ribcage and ribs of a being that died years ago

The first hours in that place were more terrifying than the 10 years he spent alone in the human world

All kinds of creatures tried to hurt him and kill him, the cold was unbearable, he felt the weight of the last hours and wished that everything was a nightmare

He found a cave and managed to make a fire, he had to use the shirt he was wearing under his jacket, but it was worth it to have some warmth

He had fallen next to the diary and now he had it in his hands, he thought about burning it, but he didn't dare, he wanted to keep it… Maybe it would be the last thing he would have of his brother…

The next morning, he woke up with a strong fever, thanks to Moses, Eda appeared, she had gone to his knee for some natural resources and found him in the cave

Thanks to that, she was able to find a warm place to sleep, where to heal her wounds and where to stay until she returned home

Reunion with Eda:

Eda would be overprotective of Stan, after all, she found Stan in a cave, shivering from the cold, sobbing and hugging tightly the diary of her twin brother, so she would be someone who, even if at first she did not want to show concern, dedicated herself to helping him

Eda sees in Stan the reflection of her younger self, she sees someone small who still needs protection, that is why she gives him a special concoction that keeps him young, she does not like being called old, but she likes to feel that she is wiser than Stan, or at least that she is like a good older sister

Eda learns Stan's story over time, and realizes that they have a lot in common, so she decides to teach him everything she knows about the boiling islands

Adaptation to the boiling islands:

Stan begins to adapt to the islands, learning to create concoctions, potions, and things like their smoke bombs, their years of running away and identity forgery were tools to survive and earn the money they needed to survive

Over time, the nickname "The Mystery Man" became a name to fear, the name of a human who was a fighter, a magician who can create potions and scam the most naive

Time of the curse:

During his stay on the Boiling Islands, trying to protect Eda in a chase, Stan was hit by the spell of a member of the coven, he could not figure out who it was, but Eda hurriedly told him that the person who cast the spell was wearing a white cape and mask, so they assumed he was a member of the emperor's coven.

Unfortunately, the next day, Stan wakes up feeling the effects of a curse.

Through his research on the Boiling Islands, Stan was able to discover that the curse he had was similar to Eda's, only instead of being the Owl beast, it is one with a similar form to that of a werewolf. Lupinotuum pectinem mortis (or as Stan called it, Lupin) is a mysterious entity that acts as the avatar of his own curse.

It inhabits those afflicted by its curse, often appearing in front of its victims within their subconscious when the curse is in effect.

Unlike Eda's curse, Stan's curse is "easier to control," in Eda's words.

Lupinotuum pectinem mortis, true to its name translated as "Werewolf of Death," is a robust, bipedal creature with a werewolf appearance.

It has a thick coat of dirty-looking silver fur, large legs, sharp claws, and a long tail.

His head resembles that of a common Wolf, with a golden circular marking with a small circle, resembling a fish eating something, with hollow black eyes and large fangs.

In the mindscape, he has an astonishing height that dwarfs Stanley, but when weakened, Lupin reverts to a smaller childlike form and is less than half Stan's size.

Nothing is known about this creature beyond the basics, that elixirs counteract the curse, its weaknesses are oversaturating its senses of smell, hearing, and sight, it will behave aggressively unless it senses safety and the scent of members of its pack.

What Stan doesn't know is that Eda knows the truth about his curse, but that information is "not important."

King's Arrival:

When Eda brought home little King, Stan didn't know how to handle him, they weren't used to taking care of children, because as soon as he heard King speak, he knew that this little boy was a baby

Over time, Stan began to take care of King as he was taught, but of course, with the help of Eda, which prevented Stan from using the lessons his father taught him to take care of King

Over time, King begins to learn to defend himself and be a great help to his family

Arrival of Luz Noceda:

When Luz arrives at the boiling islands, Stan showed up making an amazing entrance and distraction for Eda and Luz to flee, when everyone regroups, Luz is too stunned, since in her words, she didn't expect to meet someone like Stan in a world like that

When Luz realizes that Stan is human, she begins to ask him if he is "the chosen one" as in her books, which leads to a long dynamic in which Stan denies being a "chosen" like those in the books, but whose actions make him look like a hero, making Luz keep insisting

Coexistence with Luz and King

Over time, Stanley became fond of the children, Luz learned a lot thanks to Stan's life lessons, not only the things she did wrong, but he taught her to defend herself and fight to protect herself from threats like Emperor Belos or the other members of the Emperor's coven

Agony of a Witch: When Stan realizes Luz was kidnapped, Stan and Eda rush to save her, when Eda and Lilith were fighting, Stan tries to protect Luz, but because Lilith was using Luz as a shield, Stan joins the fight against Lilith

When Lilith reveals that she was in fact the one who cursed Stan and Eda, Stan is shocked, while Eda is enraged, not only because her own sister cursed her, but Stan, who she considers her brother, was also cursed because of Lilith

When Eda exhausts her magic and the curse is about to consume her, Eda orders Stan that no matter what happens, he must protect Luz, she reveals that she always had a way for Stan to get home and orders them both to leave

When both humans return to the owl house, Luz clings to Stan for safety, although Stan reciprocates, it is difficult to stay standing knowing everything that just happened.

Thank you for the wonderful comments! And yeah, I had a lot fun thinking about Luz's whole deal as Warden of the Conformitorium. It kind of brings everything full circle in a delicious twist of cruel irony from the main show, and showcases how everything is a tool to Belos. Even the most well-intentioned and kind people can be turned into unwitting contributors to his empire if he plays his cards right and that's sort of the tragedy of this whole situation. Through enabling all of Luz's guilt and self-loathing, he effectively ends up weaponizing her kindness and generosity into something to serve him.

I'm still working out a lot of the details, but as it currently stands, I plan on King and the Collector having their first major meeting in-person near the end of Act 1, but this first impression didn't go so well since the Collector unknowingly did something bad (it's a little spoilery but hint: it involves Luz and they thought they were helping her) and King (who mind you at this point, basically has an amped up version of his Season 1 personality at this point in the story) got real fucking angry at them for it when he and Eda went to try and find out what happened to Luz, and their interaction kind of exploded.

A little bit after that, the Collector leaves the planet entirely at the end of Act 1 for...somewhat spoilery reasons, before returning near the end of Act 2. By then King's gone through his whole Season 2 arc and gotten more mature, though the Collector at first is still a bit on edge since their first encounter. But over the course of Act 3 they begin to reconcile and bond and grow like they did in Season 3, and eventually become best friends like in the canon. It's still a little barebones at the moment since this all happens a bit later in the story and I've been preoccupied with the billion other plot lines and character dynamics going on, but it is a very important thread I plan of further fleshing out.

Ah, the child god blorbos are so wholesome, I hope nothing bad ever happens to those two (something very bad ends up happening to those two, and everyone else as well, but that's spoilers for way further in the story)

How would one go about learning how to make something like the cactus?

Like prerequisites, older code, hardware stuff, etc.

The main prerequisites I can think of are being heavily interested in vintage computers, and having the drive to try and fail and then try again.

I started with building Grant Searle's design, borrowing from other working designs as I went. However, for the front panel? That's alot of time designing, learning, simulating in Logisim, and testing with physical logic gates to produce something 100% original and of my own design. I imagine most folks won't want to go to the trouble of designing an entire front panel state machine like I did.

The good news is that there are way more kits that can help teach the necessary skills than ever before! Most notably, Ben Eater's 6502 kit is a really great way to learn many of the things that I've put into practice here. He has a whole youtube video series associated with it, walking through concepts, construction, programming, etc. step by step. Even if you don't build one of his kits, watching them is an informative process. *I* learned alot, even after having built the Cactus.

If you're going the Z80 direction, the RC2014 series of kits can teach you plenty. There's also glitchworks kits in a few processor types, but those tend to be a bit more for the advanced user. There's the 1802 Membership Card but that's small and not really expandable. I could be here all day listing kits that can help teach and build up experience.

I should mention that I have a computer science degree in my back pocket, but learning logic gates or using assembly was only lightly touched on in the course of my studies. Most of the programming I do involved messing around in BASIC anyway.

I really didn't have a game plan for some of it, so alot of my learning process was trial and error. Alot of errors, in fact. Still making them, and learning from them. I also took the harder route to construction, since I didn't know how to use EDA tools for designing PCBs like KiCAD or Altium or Eagle (don't use Fritzing for the love of fuck).

Oh, one other thing I can recommend: reading through contemporary 1970s computing magazines like Byte (check the internet archive for back issues). There are all sorts of cool projects and ideas present that can really guide you. It doesn't hurt to have a copy of Don Lancaster's TTL Cookbook on hand (I think it's in PDF form online).

Finding a community to help you out is also a great idea. Even back in the 1970s, many folks who jump-started the home computer revolution had the Homebrew Computer Club to help them out. Community meetings to bounce ideas off of, and help one another through debugging are essential in my book -- you don't have to work in a vacuum. I've got a few places I've asked for help, most notably the Retrotech Crew discord server. I've had the benefit of friends who also have homebrewed designs like @techav, who have inspired me with their ideas, but helped me out with mine. In turn, as I've learned, I've been able to help out others.

so I’m gonna just ramle here a little bit, it is quite late as I’m writing this and I have a migraine so I might be a little incoherent

so I have autism, one of the things this has always mentioned for me is that I assign a lot of importance to rules, like A LOT of importance to rules, and I have since as far back as I can remember. For years I’d have to leave the room when watching tv shows or movies and a character was breaking a rule because it made me so upset. years go by and slowly I’m getting better at this, (I can watch the entirety of the croods now which was a huge step) (for anyone who doesn’t know one of the themes of that movie is that sometimes to rules are broken and need to be updated) and along comes the owl house now I had heard a lot of good things about this show and I was determined to watch it, i really wanted to like it, so I kinda forced my to stay and watch it even when Luz following owlbert made me upset, because I wanted to give it a chance

and I can’t quite explain what happened that day but by the end of the first episode I had grown attached to eda, i couldn’t quite place it but something about her resonated with me

One of the biggest things in the owl house is standing up to awful leaders and disobeying unjust laws time and time again although eda is flawed and doesn’t always follow the rules she cares (and sure maybe she sometimes scams people, but that’s lying which is separate from rule breaking and doesn’t make me upset in the same way)

what eda, and the owl house as a whole, really helped me internalize is that rules and authority figures are not always right. One of the biggest moments that sticks out to me actually comes pretty late in the show from season 2b, in Thems The Breaks Kid we learn that

A lot of the things eda does are things that make sense to her (think celebrating the detention pits birthday)

When she goes to h.e.c.k although everything is school based, school is an authority that’s supposed to have their best interest in mind, it’s like undeniably bad. I don’t think Raine and Eda ever actually break any rules either (not until the very end) just have fun within them but are punished anyway. How is that fair? It’s not.

like I don’t know I’m not explaining this very well, but the owl house is single-handedly responsible for giving me the tools to defy authority figures and break rules when it comes to my own moral code. The owl house single-handedly gave me the tools to fight facism. I owe this show a lot

also I know this is mostly appreciation to Eda but I want to take a minute to talk about both Lilith and Raine for a moment

Lilith is probably the character most like me in the entire show, she values rules and structures and systems, she craves approval from authority figures, she changed a lot about herself to try and fit in. She’s an anxious overachiever who has the type of trust that can cause problems. But she’s able to grow away from that a bit, and it’s slow, and she reverts back a lot, and I appreciate that we get to see her struggle after being faced with the fact everything she believed was a lie

now Raine I feel like was more comprehensive around the system from the start, never really had a ton on trust in it. But it’s complicated, and I don’t think we ever get a chance to see the whole picture. And idk, it’s nice to see, I can’t really express my thoughts right now

Meet Till Eulenspiegel, or Tilly

They’re a mischievous little palisman who loves spreading chaos but internally they deeply wish for a person who could fill the gap their original owner left so they’re always trying out new owners until that person gets tired of them due to their strong attitude and lack of interest in being used as a staff because they prefer to be flying about in their animal form rather than be used as a tool.

Their original owner was a huge human folklore nut (specifically German folklore) so when they carved them, he made them be a Wolpertinger which is basically the jackolope’s more chaotic looking cousin and even named them after a famous German folklore character/ possibly real person.

But their original owner got killed at some point (not too sure how but because of Tilly’s name being based on a guy who was famous for hating authority it was probably due to rebelling against the empire) and after attempting for many decades to find the perfect owner who doesn’t give up on them or find them hard to deal with and then abandon them, they ended up in the care of the bat queen.

Until Pip came along because he had to run an errand with Luz for Eda because she was too busy with other stuff to go help the bat queen.

Originally Pip wasn’t even going to come along because the bat queen has tried to kill him multiple times for reasons he doesn’t understand as he avoids being around her and palisman like if they were the plague but it’s because the bat queen senses that he’s a threat due to his curse and how there’s a palisman spirit stuck in him so she wants to kill him to avoid more palisman deaths and save the poor guy who’s stuck there but since this episode is during early season two, they really needed the snails and Pip didn’t want to just abandon Luz so he went over anyway to help out.

The bat queen didnt make too much of a fuss about Pip coming along with Luz because she needs all the help she can get. This is because a bunch of palisman that were under her care were found by scouts and were about to be delivered to Belos and she can’t leave her babies or the rest of the palisman behind just in case there’s more scouts so that’s why she needed their help.

One of the palisman who managed to escape being captured was Tilly, so they ended up guiding Luz and Pip to the rest of them but on the way they ended up taking a liking to Pip due to at first thinking he was a fair maiden (Tilly is slightly blind due to a part of her carving process going slightly wrong) because of his longer hair in comparison to Luz but ngl a funnier explanation is that Tilly immediately sensed that Pip is genderfluid before he even knew it lmaoooo.

But yeah anyways after the rescue mission goes successfully, Tilly ends up deciding to stay with Pip much to both the Bat queen’s and Pip’s disappointment because they really liked how he tricked the scouts by dressing up as one but also decided to play a couple of extremely dangerous (but only the scouts) pranks in meantime to distract the guards from noticing Luz speeding away with all of the captured palisman.

Even though Pip is extremely hesitant about the whole having a palisman thing, they still end up getting along swimmingly as Pip doesn’t really like using staffs or magic in general and so tilly is able to roam around as much as they want but they don’t actually mind being used as a staff by Pip after a while because they both end up having such a good friendship but Pip still always asks them first if they’re alright with doing a spell together or if she is comfortable with him using her to fly

Tilly is also sort of co-owned by Luz as Pip at the beginning didn’t trust himself enough to be around Tilly for long periods of time due to the trauma of being forced to munch on a palisman when he was younger so he has Luz look after them when he feels like he can’t cope with the situation at the moment.

Luz loves Tilly and takes care of them as if they were her own child/ palisman whenever she’s on palisman-sitting duty although Pip thinks she spoils Tilly too much (but to be honest Pip probably spoils her even more but doesn’t realise it.)

So Tilly really likes Luz and even occasionally allows her to use them as a staff when owlbert isn’t around.

An example of a Wolpertinger so it shows I’m not making this shit up, this one is a mix of a rabbit, deer, a squirrel and a bird but I’m not sure of what type.

In real life they’re a joke mythological creature that was created for tourism so they have the most funniest lore I’ve ever read for a myth, for example the way to catch one of these bad boys is to have a fair maiden because they have an attraction to them but on the other hand they’re also tricksters who make tourists who explore forests lose their direction and starve to death…so uh yeah there’s more to them than that but those two are my favourite traits.

Tilly is specifically a mix of a rabbit, a deer, an owl and a skunk.

The owl part has a specific reason because the literal translation of “Eulenspiegel” is owl-mirror but is also garbled version of an expression for "wipe-the-arse"… This is because of the nature the character Tilly is named after as he was a legendary German peasant who later had a bunch of folklore created due to being a insane prankster who would defy any and all authority which I think fits into Tilly’s species and personality perfectly.

As well I designed her knowing that she’ll eventually ends up as Pip’s palisman hence why theyre a hybrid (just like him) but also I think by them being part bird it’ll be something that helps him feel more comfortable about having a palisman, especially one that’s part owl who hates authority like Eda who he has a great respect for.

Oh yeah and Rip Muffin, aka the original palisman I had originally planned for Pip to have but couldn’t because Waffles was a thing in season 3 and it felt awkward to have both hunter and Pip with Blue jays, but because I’m not bothered to design another palisman oc ever again due to how much it sucks to figure out their staff forms she’s now the Palisman that Pip got forced to eat by Belos when he was younger.
