Meet the Artist: @septembersart
Hi guys! My name is Jenna, and I’m a South African artist based in the US. I’ve just stumbled out of a fancy traditional art university earlier this year, and am learning how to make art for myself again. For me, that takes the form of turning my favorite book series into a (fake) video game, and filling every inch of my sketchbook with post-it notes, stickers, and tracing paper. I’m very into vintage print, dynamic characters, and retro tech, all of which can be found in Space Soda, the webcomic I’m planning on releasing this year! I’ve been on tumblr for about 7 years, and I love the community I’ve found here. I’m very grateful for everyone who’s supported me on my art journey, especially those who gave a few likes to those wonky photos of my sketchbook so long ago.
Nice to meet you, Jenna! Below are some art pieces she has picked out to feature.

Hello Tracy, I've been a fan of Lackadaisy since the webcomic days and want to ask a quick question regarding Patreon. I'm also an indie creative myself and currently trying to raise funds for a show I'm working on. What are the best ways to market myself online, and what are some ways to obtain money for the production of merchandise that doesn't involve crowdfunding?
Any specific advice I could give about marketing oneself online at this point would be pretty outdated. I started making Lackadaisy years back, when the internet had a rather different geography and culture. DeviantArt was where all the art kids were. That is, of course, no longer the case.
My generalized advice, though, would be to start working on your project, start sharing it in some form, even if it's just concept art or experiments at this phase, and start building an audience. Nothing speaks to the quality and appeal of whatever it is you're making like the thing itself does. Pick your poisons, as far as social media goes, but probably don't focus solely on one. Platforms don't remain useful or pleasant places to be forever. Set up an avenue for viewers to support you (Patreon, Ko-fi, or something like it), but don't expect supporters to come flooding in all at once. The internet is awash with so many creators and shows and influencers and distractions, it's hard to make waves. Tenacity will be your ally, though. You are likely going to be pursuing your project on the side and possibly working at a loss for a while as you build. Keep things small scale, especially if you're working solo, or with a small team of people. Audience growth and support may eventually start allowing you to expand your ambitions. It's important to do the thing you're doing out of love for the art, for the project itself, for the experience of doing it, and not because you're expecting rounds of applause, accolades, and money to come rushing at you. There's no guarantee that last part will happen...so at least make sure you're having fun doing whatever you're doing.
----------------
About merchandise --
You can incur the upfront cost of producing, say, a small run of enamel pins. Sell them on your own shop storefront or offer them to supporters at certain tier levels and see how long it takes to earn back the production cost such that you start earning a little bit of profit. Get a feel for how well you can handle packaging and shipping things yourself. Test the waters before making any large merch orders, and don't order vast amounts of something that you don't have room to 'warehouse' in your own home.
You can go the print on demand route. It's got its drawbacks - like slim returns - but it allows you to offer an assortment of merch items without the huge risk of paying big manufacturing fees upfront. It can also do the fulfillment/shipping part for you. I did pretty okay selling prints this way for a time. (Research and be selective about what services you use here, though. Some have gotten markedly worse over the years.)
I know Patreon offers a subscription level for creators that includes some merch production and fulfillment. I haven't personally used it, though, so I'd ask around to see what other creators' experiences have been like with it.
One thing I would suggest relying more heavily on, especially at first, is digital/downloadable rewards, like PDF ebooks or digital sketchbooks - things like that. Shipping supplies and postage costs are ever-increasing and can easily end up putting you in the red. Also, if you have an international audience, it may be difficult to reach them with tangible merch items.
You might also check out some nearby conventions to see if they'd be a good fit for you and your project. Apply for artist alley space at one of them if that's appropriate, or investigate whether or not it'd be worth it to get a dealer table. You might even find someone willing to share dealer space with you for a trial-run.
At some point, when you have enough of an audience to warrant it, seek out a merch partner. Or, they might come scouting for you if they think you have something going that'd be soundly marketable.

thoughts about the "it's ableist to demand people to create art without ai" argument
thankfully not an argument that shows up on my dash unless someone is dunking on it (though i prefer not to be exposed to it at all but what can you do), but i Do think it can be worth biting into the question of: Does True Art Require Effort?
like, if we just ignore the exploitative nature of generative AI for a moment, and the fact that it creates dogshit results and is probably not going to get much "better" than this.
the thing i tend to harp on is that i don't find it particularly meaningful to discuss back and forth whether or not ai generated pictures counts as Real Art or not, because we do not have a meaningful consensus on how to define art in a way that includes everything we personally think is art and excludes everything we don't think is art. it's an interesting discussion! but it's a distraction from, well, The Exploitation. i personally think ai generated pictures can be art - it just tends to be Bad Art. it's uninspired, boring, and makes a mockery of the craft - but that's something you can say about many artworks that's been crafted by real human hands, as well.
so technically i have already answered the question, but it's not what i wanted to talk about. what i wanted to look at was the relationship between Art and Effort, or as some may put it, Suffering. because there is a point where i agree- i don't think there's a necessary Effort Threshold something needs to pass to be considered Art. i don't think one has to suffer to create. and it is true that for some people, the act creation requires far more effort or sacrifice than it requires of others, be it because of disability, time restraints, a lack of resources... we have different situations! this is real! i myself have struggled with tendonitis, severely limiting my ability to draw, and it's not something you can just keep drawing your way through the pain for, lest you fuck it up even worse.
the first question is this: is Creation a human right? well, self actualization IS on the maslow's pyramid of needs, on the tippy top. i have no idea if the pyramid theory is considered Super Legit or not, but it makes sense to me. i think humans DO have a creative need that we express in a myriad of forms - not just writing and drawing! i think our brains yearn to Make Thing for the sake of Making Thing. i think it is very very sad that techbros are dabbling in the act of creation by writing prompts to feed ai generators, and i pity them for not having discovered a more fulfilling way to feed that impulse. i do actually think all humans should have time and tools for creative expressions, but that's an extremely broad sentence for me to say.
(a more adjacent topic is that art as a Product is more of a luxury than a Human Need, like it's not food or shelter. but also art is so deeply embedded in human civilization, and i do think it's a shame how often people consider it superfluous or even hedonistic. *i* think it's important to feed the soul with beauty and stories and expression, but i have no authority to make such a claim for all humankind.)
here is the thing. we have made many tools that have made creating art easier. we live in an age of photography and audio recording and digital art programs. the last one especially can give us a MYRIAD of shortcuts when it comes to creating visual art! nobody would consider it "cheating" to use the paint bucket tool instead of painstakingly filling in every area with a brush tool. we have increasingly more access to 3d models and various assets. *is* there a point where we draw a line in the sand and say, "you're not spending enough time to make this, therefore it is void"? i, personally, wouldn't. i wouldn't know where to draw that line. i have been reading webcomics for a long time, and i have seen how webtoon as a platform has slowly gentrified the medium and is forcing creators to create pages at an unsustainable, breakneck speed - it's no wonder artists are plopping 3D assets directly into their art to even make that schedule viable.
like, ultimately, generative ai doesn't make anything new we have never seen before - we've had photo manipulation for as long as photography has existed, what we consider "slop" has been churned out by greedy corporations for as long as it's been a way to make money - it just makes it much faster, and, crucially, without intention or creative input.
like, i think that's the big thing. whether or not Art can be created without Intent is a whole another discussion, actually. there was an article about someone leaving their glasses on the floor at a gallery, and people started treating it as part of the exhibition. your cat can take a random, unintended photo and you can call it art. once again, a very big and interesting discussion to have! but i think the throughline is that even if human intent was not involved in creating the art, human intent placed it in a context to make it art. art is a social construct! but! i do think intent can be the line between Good art and Bad art. unfortunately, this is another extremely complex discussion to have, because can we objectively call any art Good or Bad? what does Good or Bad even *mean*! do we even have time to delve into that!!
but what we can say for absolutely 100% certain is that generative ai has no intent, no purpose, no thoughts. it is an algorithm, it does not have the ability to think or mean anything of its own. if it has a bias, it's because the people who programmed it have a bias, or because there is an implicit bias in the content fed to it. now, i don't want to go down the path of talking about how Real Art has a ~*Soul*~ or always has some kind of deep meaning. i don't think the millions of Cool Anime Eyes sketched in math notebooks have a deeper meaning. we create art for lots and lots of purposes - for fun, for practice, to make money, to tell our most vulnerable of truths in the only way we know how, and so on. it can be hard to tell how much of what we create is imbued with ~*intent*~, or even how much we are aware of it - i don't know if a 12 year old trying to draw the coolest edgiest sword wielding OC is thinking too hard about like, the contextual implications of design tropes... but they're making an effort to make their OC look ras as hell with the knowledge and tools at their tiny hand. when they are 24 they may look back at what they drew and redraw it with all the experience they have gained since!!
an AI can't replace a human doing creative work professionally because the skills and knowledge they are using is far more than just "picture look pretty" or "this text vaguely sounds like it was written by a human and isn't that super impressive". at best, or worst really, it replaces extremely overworked and over-exploited professionals who are not given time, resources and compensation to do their job *well*, such as ghost writers forced to write slop.
creation is more than the effort it takes to make it. it is *knowing* how to shape your clay, your words, your lines, to make them into what you want them to be and what you want them to do. it is knowing how (and when) to rewrite your draft, to pick out the best sketch, to make coherent thumbnails, tighten up the narrative, to evoke a mood, to play on themes. it is to build your skill with everything you make.
generative AI is a randomizer button. the one thing i feel fairly certain about is that it's very difficult to say *you* created something if all you did was write a prompt and a machine spat out a product at you. like that one seems fairly cut and dry to me. another thing i've seen a lot is people claiming to use genAI as a starting point, and then editing the thing to make it what you want it to be - and i can see the merit in that, sure! though i also think that the amount of editing and tweaking you need to do to make the thing workable is so substantial and grueling that you may as well make your thing from scratch, and now we've just looped back around to the Demanding Effort Is Ableism problem again.
using generative AI is giving up your autonomy in the process of creation. there are ways to spin art out of that (gestures at marina abramovíc's famous performance art where she just let the audience do whatever they wanted to her while she remained unresponsive) - but for the question of Creating Art As A Human Right And Need: why would you want to? what creative fulfilment do you get out of relinquishing all creative control? you're not... you're not *making* anything. maybe you came up with an idea - great start! - and then threw it out the window in the hopes that the wind would pick it up and take it somewhere exciting. god, even that sounds more like an artistic project than using generative AI. literally any metaphor i could make about this sounds more artistic and interesting than what generative AI is doing these days. i miss the time when AI generated pictures were incomprehensible and strange. i miss secret horses. i miss the time where i naively hoped computers dreaming up images would be like, artistically interesting.
most importantly, as many, many other people have said: disabled people are *already* making art. when my tendonitis was bad, i drastically reduced my drawing time and switched to only using tools that were gentle on my hands, and planned my drawings and drawing time accordingly. i think of my disabled writer friends using speech-to-text software. i think of sir terry pratchett, diagnosed with alzheimers, creating his last books by dictating to his assistant and making audio notes for himself. i'm thinking of the many, many creatives who have collaborated to create amazing things together. i'm not going to come out here and say that ~*Anything Is Possible If You Only Put Your Mind To It*~ or some other platitude that disregards your disability, i don't know you, maybe you will never have the ability or resources to work on the One beautiful creative project that lives in your heart. but i am nearly completely certain that generative AI is not your only option.

Terrible Visions
A scrambled timeline is a timeline that has proceeded much like ours, except that some particular facet has been mixed up all over the place. For example, in the scrambled timeline we will consider today, our world's fictional stories have been told by different people, and in different ways.
Bryan Lee O'Malley, in this alternate timeline, is best known as the cartoonist responsible for Homestuck, a popular comic series about a group of children who become embroiled in a cosmic-scale video game known as Sburb. Although Homestuck is probably most often associated with the cult classic Edgar Wright-directed film adaptation released in 2016, the comics themselves are highly-regarded, and the film brought a new audience to them. Netflix has commissioned an animated continuation, The Homestuck Epilogues, which is due to be released soon.
Andrew Hussie, on the other hand, is a figure you're likelier to know if you're overly online. His "MS Paint Adventures" series - most notably including Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, which is kind of like Homestuck but weirder and hornier - have firmly remained a fixture of obsessive Twitter fandom culture. It doesn't help that the best-known iteration, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, is infamous for stretching thousands of pages of meandering digressions out of a simple and focused narrative starting point. Scott Pilgrim fans have developed something of a toxic reputation, which is not entirely deserved - although of course Knives discourse is interminable, and back in the fandom's heyday there were reportedly incidents of fans assaulting each other "for being evil exes".
Scott Pilgrim fandom was very big back in the day, though, and consequently it was a nexus for other creative figures who would go on to surpass Hussie. Perhaps foremost among these is indie developer Toby Fox. He was literally living in Hussie's basement when he produced ROSEQUARTZ, a universally-beloved retro Goonies-like RPG about a human hybrid boy born to a race of gem-based aliens. He's now developing an episodic spiritual successor, RAZORQUEST, with more overtly dark themes. It revolves around an inheritance dispute among a demon-summoning family.
Other foundational figures in this timeline's internet culture include Alison Bechdel, who helped get the webcomic scene started. Although she's now more seriously acclaimed for her personal memoirs, her gaming webcomic Press Start To Dyke, which premiered in 1998, was once everywhere. It had a broad appeal, and at its height, it was common to see even straight guys sharing pages from it. Time has not been especially kind to it, though, and at this point its main legacy is test.png, a meme spawned by one of the comic's most ill-advised pages.
Then there's John C. McCrae, more often known by his pseudonym Wildbow. A prolific and reclusive author of doorstopping "web serials" - long-form fiction published online - McCrae's best-known serial is still his first, Wind, a noir superhero story set in an alternate history where capes are mostly just a subculture of unpowered vigilantes. Wind landed in a culture already rife with comic book deconstructions, like Alan Moore's 2002 graphic novel Worm Turns, but it nonetheless managed to stand out from the pack with its extensive cast of characters and its themes of coordination problems and the end of the world. Later McCrae web serials include Part (the first "Otherverse" serial; an urban fantasy story about a couple who die in a car accident and find that they have become ghosts), Tear (a "biopunk" story set in a collapsing underwater city), Warn (the controversial Wind sequel), and Play (the second "Otherverse" serial, set in a small Indiana town that helps hide a psychic girl from the CIA).
Last and perhaps least, we should discuss J. K. Rowling. Far and away the most famous of any of these authors, Rowling's name is inseparable from the YA series that she debuted with, the Luz Noceda books, which remain her one successful work. Although it was heavily derivative of older fantasy novels - like Jill Murphy's Academy For Little Witches, or Philip Pullman's Methods Of Rationality trilogy - Luz Noceda was still a monumental and unprecedented success in the publishing industry, and the film adaptations were consistent blockbusters. The final book, Luz Noceda and the Watcher of Rain, contained some allusions to a romantic relationship between Luz and her recently-redeemed associate Amity. Rowling confirmed that this was her intent in subsequent interviews and indicated that she had fought her publishers for it; the film would then go on to escalate matters slightly further.
There have been many lengthy and heated online arguments as to whether the references in the book itself constitute text or mere subtext. Whatever your stance on this discourse, a new complication has been introduced recently: although she has put out no official statement on the matter as of yet, it has become quite apparent from Rowling's shrinking network of contacts and her conspicuous silences that she is certainly TERF-sympathetic, and likely an outright TERF herself. For many, this is leading to a critical reevaluation of the social values inherent in the Luz Noceda series; others, to say the least, are holding off on that kind of reappraisal.
Anyway, Scott Pilgrim just beat Luz Noceda in a Twitter poll for Most Gay Media, and people are piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed

Graphic novel, available as printed or webcomic. Artie and the Wolf Moon by Olivia Stephens
Middle grade graphic novel. One night, young Artie witnesses something incredible - her own mother turning into a wolf. She finds out she's from a lineage of werewolves, and to help her awaken her abilities her mother invites family friends who are like them. A new world opens up for Artie, but so do dark secrets: werewolves have a deadly enemy, and it's coming back for them.
Bored Gay Werewolf by Tony Santorella
Brian is a slacker, having dropped out from college, working as a waiter, and spending his nights drinking with his friends - except the nights when he turns into a werewolf, of course. But after having slipped and killed a jogger, Brian is noticed by fellow werewolf Tyler, who's working on a self-help startup for werewolves and offers to mentor Brian. At first Tyler's methods helps Brian get back on his feet, but the more he learns of Tyler's expansion plans, the more he realizes he might be bad news. A good read if you want a funny, goofy take down of toxic masculinity that doesn't take itself very seriously.

But in a family of wolves Eleanor is something else - and even more dangerous.
Red Hood by Elana K. Arnold
Young adult horror. A take on the little red riding hood tale where the girl is both the victim of the wolf and the huntsman who slays it. After a particularly embarrassing incident, young Bisou flees into the woods, only to be faced with a predatory wolf. To her shock, their face-off ends with the wolf dead, not Bisou. Even more shocking: the dead wolf turns into a boy. Suddenly, Bisou finds herself a hunter and a protector, routing out the wolves who masquerade as boys. Visceral and bloody, but pretty feminism 101 in its portrayal.

Webcomic rings run by people within the community are cool and you should support them
I've been loudly struggling a little bit with corporate webcomic Stuff lately so I want to mention something positive to balance it out: webrings run by small groups of creators earnestly trying to support each other are slowly making a comeback and I for one am delighted.
If you weren't around for them in the before times, webrings were just some folks who hang out a lot who feature each other on their websites. That's literally it lmao. There's generally no money involved and it only really functions the way it's supposed to if people have control over their own websites AND genuinely want to participate and get excited about other folks' work, which means the practice has pretty well fallen by the wayside over the years in webcomic culture given. Everything. In the rare event someone decides to do something like this it's usually in the form of a link list somewhere on their website; this doesn't usually indicate any sort of mutual support, it's just a list of what the creator is reading themselves.
A webring, though, is an official banner or hub that people gather under intentionally where each member is more or less on equal footing. It's essentially the concept of "a rising tide lifts all boats" put into practice, each creator brings their own audience to the table in a passive, opt-in sort of way that's different from working for a publisher since there isn't necessarily a Top Spot or a paycheck everyone's vying for, and individuals retain autonomy over both their own work and how (if) they promote each other. You're all at your own tables in an artist alley rather than fighting over the table in the front of the book store, essentially.
I have two rings and one collective for you today!
Tumblr media
Webcomic Ring was brought to my attention AGES ago by Holly, one of the artists featured there, and I might have brought it up at some point but I'm doing it again lmao. This is exactly the kind of thing you ought to be looking for; a small group of enthusiastic folks having a good time making their weird little comics. You probably haven't heard of much in the catalog, that's PERFECT in the context of webcomics that's where the GOOD SHIT is. Finding something like this is A Gift go dig around in the longboxes for a while.
Tumblr media
Then a few people have pointed me in the direction of the KNIFEBEETLE collective and that's neat too! Most of the comics there are already fairly well-known, but the vibes are excellent and I haven't seen a lot of talk about the collective /itself/ outside folks already in the know. I think it's important for this sort of thing to be more visible to folks who aren't terminally steeped in webcomic culture already so here I am telling you about it. You were probably reading several of these before I suggested it, but that's how a webring works! For it to do its job you should take those bigger creators' tacit recommendation of the less popular titles as a sign to go read something new and strange. Wild, I know these are practices held over from the old internet, but I think we should try and bring them back.
Lastly, I want to mention Spiderforest, which is a collective (slightly different from a webring) BUT still a very cool project readers starved for new stuff should pay attention to.
Tumblr media
You've probably seen Spiderforest kicking around for a long time already; they're wonderful and have always been an overall positive force in the community in my experience. They really focus on building up a community, and especially welcoming newcomers and helping them get their feet under them. Full disclosure, I've been asked to apply by a few different folks over the years and the only reason I never did is I don't have the ability to participate in their forums and such as frequently as they want their creators to; it's a very good system (from my outside perspective) that might contribute to the community staying mostly healthy in ways that art communities usually don't and I appreciate it a lot!
ANYWAYS that's all I got for now, just trying to balance out some bad feelings I've been having by talking about some good stuff. Please go binge an archive this week.

<< previous part
Synopsis of what’s currently going on in the Chichi arc of this story: Chichi and Goten have begun the martial art trainings, but along the way, Goten accidentally “unlocked” the secret to the power that can change his life forever: the existence of Ki.
——————————————————————————————
If anyone still remembers (lol i don’t blame you guys if you don’t, it’s been half a year), this blog, or me personally, has a long form passion project called “THE UNSPOKEN webcomic” that’s inspired by Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball that started since 2021, in the midst of Covid until now. It follows Goten and Trunks’ story and rewrites things in a more matured perspective, and currently, the project is being halted at Chichi and Goten’s martial art lessons due to many things that are happening in my life that I have to take care of and be resposible for.
My life is currently too eventful for me to actually sit back down, calm my mind and do personal things tbh, especially when i’m living in Asia, where “harsh working conditions are praised and exploited to the max”, “family and heritage are important™” and “forsake the individuality, embracing the collectivism” are the social norms. So that leads to me feeling burnt out all the time, even when i already have one of my favorite jobs ever: being a storyboard artist, and drawing my childhood dream of being a comic artist on the side.
This is, most definitely, not a vent post or anything like that. It’s more of a comic update, along with the artist’s reasons for postponing the project aka it’s due to somethings that’s out of their control, so the readers won’t have too much expectations in terms of regular updates for the comic, and can enjoy the things that I can offer here, whenever I can.
It’s still my favorite project, no doubt, but lots have changed throughout the years, and I feel like I myself outgrew the loving project, but also feeling like a growing yet lost child that knows so very little and keeps making mistakes on the things i like very much. But at least, I try my best to be a better person every day 🥴
One thing that will probably never change is, i may not be able to be “chronically online” (saying this affectionately btw) much anymore, but me posting means i want to share the good things to the world, whether the world wants to or not lol. Really hope I can get back to drawing this comic soon, mentally speaking. Or any personal creative project, really.

Disentangling One-Punch Man (please reblog/make additions)
Tumblr media
If you follow One-Punch Man religiously and keep up with all the twists and turns of its making, this post will feel like old hat. Please pass on the message anyway.
If One-Punch Man (hereafter OPM) is something you watch when there's a season out or read when there's a volume out, what I'm saying may seem rather odd. Pass on the message anyway.
This is for you, the person who likes OPM well enough but isn't a fanatic, especially if you only check it out every few weeks. You may find yourself at sea frequently. Don't worry, you won't be long.
In brief:
One-Punch Man is a webcomic that is serialised on Young Jump. If you can read Japanese, it is 100% free, legally. It is periodically collected and sold in volumes, which also form the basis of the anime.
It is also a passion project for ONE and Yusuke Murata. Every author and writer has things they would like to change, and if they have second thoughts about the way the story flows, they change the online version. Which can be hard to keep up with: many fan archives have a lot of trouble. To make it worse, the ShonenJump app does not change the chapters when they're updated, meaning that successive chapters can feel VERY discordant.
So, where can you go?
Up-to-date fan archive: https://cubari.moe/read/gist/OPM/
Fan archive of redacted chapters: https://cubari.moe/read/gist/Z2lzdC9mdW5reWhpcHBvL2RkMTlkNjU3NjhjOGJlMTk3MTFmZTllMjAwNDVkOGY1L3Jhdy9vcG0tc2NyYXBwZWQuanNvbg/
Site with up-to-date published (i.e., finalised) chapters: https://mangasee123.com/manga/Onepunch-Man The published chapters are labeled 'Punch XXX'.
If you read Japanese, then Tonarinoyj.jp has the current chapters here: https://tonarinoyj.jp/episode/13932016480028985383 and the superseded chapters here: https://tonarinoyj.jp/episode/13932016480029130874
Use these and you'll never be lost. :)
What if you prefer another language? I don't know: please, if anyone has links to updated archives in languages other than English or Japanese, please add to this post in reblogs.
Let's help each other out.

rockstar/idol percy 🔥
Tumblr media
this idea has been MARINATING in my head for so long
i could see kinda two ways it could work
post war -> either he is unemployed/demoted and sees the need for a side hustle, or now because he’s working less gets drawn into performance either by curiosity or someone he knows, could even be out of wanting to find coping mechanisms (more on this later :3)
during hogwarts (upper years) -> again a side hustle, could also be curiosity/a rebellious streak, i see it as a way to cope with stress and emotions through music (he has so many responsibilities, and this is a way for him to let loose)
i dont see a scenario where he would be open about it, as a career it isn’t really “sustainable” or “proper”, and Percy faces so much judgement about the way in which he acts, in which every interest and excitement is scrutinised and mocked by everyone around him
in a post-war scenario this would be even more poignant, as yes he is trying to reconnect with his family again, but why be vulnerable?? i feel he wouldnt be honest/hide “unsavoury” parts of himself, and sort of play into “the boring ministry worker trying to reconnect” thing. he’s already learnt his lesson about sharing what he’s excited about with family members, because he’s only met with mockery or disdain — percy can never actually be genuine with them so he just ends up having to hide/lie :(
on to my next point!! coping mechanism >:D
this would be SO fire to have him use music as a way to cope with his feelings that he can’t voice aloud, also as a way to be free (i specifically see him with a stage name/identity that can’t be traced back to who he is) of judgement of the way he is perceived, and just to enjoy himself in a performance where for once, he takes the centre stage, and nobody is condemning him for that
and!! he’s so stressed all the time, i think he would find being able to adopt a new persona refreshing, especially one that isn’t linked to his actual identity, i feel like people in Percy’s life box him into a specific personality of being pompous and boring and seem to condemn him for stepping outside of it, forcing percy into that box as well — the people around him force expectations upon him (like taking care of the younger ones, being a model student, being prefect (good grades, tutoring, responsibilities to younger students) which honestly prevents him from really being able to be anything else :(
okay i admit it i just think he would be talented with music if he wanted to be, and him having a voice of an angel/a powerful voice appeals to me so bad, i want him to start out in a shabby and shady back-alley run-down club where scummy people meet (either muggle/wixen), and find his way to the hot-spots of the underground scene and work his way up from there and use music to discover himself better and accept those parts of himself he feels he should hide
i want him to go to hilariously funny extents to hide it, i want him to gain confidence, i want to see it genuinely make him feel better but also grapple with the guilt of not doing what is expected of him or hiding this part of himself because this isn’t “prefect percy” but it feels like him nevertheless
also just the idea of him having his opinions and views changed by interacting with both the light and dark side of the industry, by interacting with other performers — i adore a good secret life trope where it bleeds into the one they show to everyone
like he could rock the electric guitar or any instrument he is a literal prodigy you cannot tell me im wrong
also he could totally get it down, those hips DONT lie
youre telling me with that lithe body he cant dance?? yeah.. no
also post-war he could totally get a father figure in the form of a mentor, or even more family, because he deserves more ❤️
rockstar/idol is specifically mentioned because i have ideas for both (idol being more inspired by the kpop idol scene, and what ive seen of survival shows (and webcomics))

TRAUM's first anniversary!
Tumblr media
May 2nd is the date when TRAUM first started updating on comicfury. TRAUM story 1 especially is a lot of firsts for me, a continuous story that has a conclusion. but of course, TRAUM 2 picks up where the first story left off.
I'd also had never drawn so many pages for one comic, TRAUM 1 ended up being 333 pages long, total.
Chapter 1: 64 pages
Chapter 2: 62 pages
Chapter 3: 96 pages
Chapter 4: 111 pages
which is... just bonkers to me. how'd I manage that, haha. I mean, it does help that each page is in black and white and there's typically 3 pages per panel on average.
putting the rest of my rambling behind a cut, this ended up a bit long.
I'd been burned out on comics for a good while after Daddy Long Legs in 2011. considering it was a full colour comic with self-contained vignettes each update (once a week, even), is it any wonder I burned myself out. the setting also, unfortunately, no longer interests me. I may have done some things differently and I had comic ideas that never came to fruition, but oh well.
even so, sequential narrative art kept beckoning me, I'd been drawing shorter comics for ages and only when I stopped entertaining every single idea as Next Potential Comic Project I could take it easy. just drawing for fun. even if I had a few webcomic ideas that, alas, never quite materialized due to being too ambitious.
TRAUM isn't intended to be anything world-shattering or thought-provoking: what I set out to do was to draw characters going on adventures and seeing how they interact with one another, much like I used to do when I drew comics as a kid by the seat of my pants. it's fun to see characters doing their own thing.
TRAUM 1's story originally started with a basic premise: the subject of grief, bereavement. and because I'd been reading a bunch of Oz books I wanted to make my own scarecrow character, so Wedge was born. a scarecrow standing in a field and unaware their master had died long ago, and after that point they begin questioning their role as scarecrow. what can a scarecrow do if there's no field to scare crows away from? their ability to eat crows came first, but since they're able to do that, surely they can cry, too? I didn't initially intend Wedge to become a main character but it just kind of happened. the character relationships formed organically. I started shipping Wedge and Helmi! truly strange! but I ended up loving their chemistry.
after chapter 2 of TRAUM 2 ends, I uh, I'll see what I'll do, I've been working on another comic project, Lush&Flora, I have the first story fully thumbnailed and pages set up. chapter 3 of TRAUM 2 only needs to be inked and toned at this point, but I'll see how I'll find the time and energy, I'll probably have to put the comic on hiatus while I work on L&F.
in any case, thank you for reading TRAUM so far. I hope you've been enjoying it. it's definitely attracted a few detractors here and there, some not fans of Helmi and Wedge's relationship, someone else considering the comic to be boring, but, vast majority of folks commenting on the comic have been very civil and kind. I hope you enjoy other creative endeavours I may work on in the future, whether TRAUM related or not, only future can tell.
thank you!

Do you have an official design for Reaper? Also, how big is he? Also, is there ever a scene where Autumn is all *hollow form transformation, wooahhhh* “this is what I am! Wahhhhhh” (drama, drama, but people accept her anyways bc she has good support)?
Also, questions for both Basil and Autumn:
Do they have any fav series? (Books, shows, movies, webcomics, etc.)
What kinda music would they like (artists too maybe? Pwetty pwease 🥺)
Spice tolerance?
ADHD? Autism? Anxiety? Depression?
Good or bad grades?
Do they like handcrafted gifts, even if they look a lil funky?
(Jesus this is getting rlly long I’m so sorry)
Scale of 1-10 of their love for plushies
Video games? Do they like? What would they play on? (I can imagine them playing just dance on Basil’s Wii lmao)
Love language?
Any certain types (like romantically)?
Do they have sleepovers together?
Do they get hated on for being Bi/Pan? Bc it’s set in 2000-2010 right? Because, at least in my high school, there’s still a LOT of icky homophobes and it’s 2025.
(When you say you have art block so I just give you a different kind of creative headache :])
Now, I’ll crawl back into my hole, plotting for my next big ol ask abt ur children >:) (seriously thank u for putting up with me)
I have rough sketches, but not a full finalized clean design. He’s about 3’ 5. (Actual height) and in his Hollow Form he’s about 8’ 0. I can’t give any specific scenes or spoilers, but I will say that she does have a full hollow form different from the one yall have already seen! I would say Basil would probably love Ghostbusters, Gravity Falls, and Smiling Friends. I would say Autumn loves Owl House, Gravity Falls, and probably Coraline or Paranorman. Basil probably listens to jack stauber, lemon demon (probably why I headcanoned that for his voice) and the Living Tombstone. Lots of web core and show tunes (probably a band kid) Autumn actually has a playlist already! (Working on Basils) https://open.spotify.com/playlist/65t5fjUW0UZw3BB2y0244M?si=kqm56cOGTIudtLpOCPP2Bw&pi=5lUrssRvRFiFM But for generality , probably a lot of indie punk and alternative rock. It’s the type of music she plays and can play (dreams to be in an indie band so bad) I bet Autumn has a really high spice tolerance, and basil…. Is probably the opposite. This gets me out of my comfort zone tysm for asking these questions btw. I think Basil has Autism, but overall he’s a little bundle of joy. Doesn’t let things get him down when the going gets tough. (He’s my sweet summer child 🎀) Autumn on the other handddd….. well she has high levels of anxiety on her day to day basis, and does suffer from depression (sometimes not all the time, especially after the whole deal with the hollows and being cursed doesn’t help. High school can be very harsh on her self view) probably AuDHD I think basil wouldn’t care about his grades that much, mostly because he’s so focused on his “career” (ghost hunting) but I feel he would somehow get good grades anyway. Autumn works hard to get good grades, but usually fails in specific class subjects, such as Algerbra or geometry (ough speaking of geometry that class killed me💔💔💔 but I passed somehow) (Also no worries I’m having a LOT of fun typing these out🤠💅🎀) 10-Basil 8-Autumn-she just doesn’t have a lot 🥀 10-Clover (she collects pompompurin plushies definitely omg) I’m still debating what time period this story takes place, but preferably the 2000’s to 2010’s. Oh basil and autumn would LOVE video games. More so basil though. I bet autumn would play guitar hero or the legend of Zelda skyward sword on the Wii. Basil probably would play super smash bros and Mario kart with autumn all the time. He’d probably purposely find glitches in games or purchase “haunted” discs. To add to his collection! Autumns love language is probably quality time. Getting to know the person is most important to her (but she’s prolly a little touch-starved too give her a hug🥀🥀🥀 that girl needs one) Basil probably is acts of service. I bet he goes around doing a lot of community work for people around town (drags autumn along with him) Uhm I don’t really knowwww….. I think autumn prefers women and basil doesn’t really have a type, it’s more so the personality of the person that is his type (he prefers genuine, honest people that can handle his yapping) I bet they totally have sleepovers together omg basils siblings would do both of their makeups and they would slay so hard (autumn is much more minimalistic with her makeup and tends not to put little to none on so when she goes over it’s the most she’s had on all week) I bet they do, they aren’t very openly lgbtq at school and both of their parents aren’t homophobic (thank goodness omg) but I plan on not showing that type of feedback on their sexuality as I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or viewpoints, just know that they are gay and are slaying💅💅💅 (also possible yuri scenes in show HELL YEAHHHH) Also darn I’m sorry that there’s homophobes at your school. My whole friend group is gay (including me but I’m AroAce) so like i haven’t seen any homophobia in my school but i bet there is a quite a bit. It sucks when people just can’t be decent human beings and leave people alone to be what they want and love who they want.
Tysm for the ask! sorry for answering late. i was busy and my tumblr wasnt working so i spent 20 minutes trying to figure out how to fix it and now its fixed.

Fluff 49 is someone jealous
Mei (could be taken as platonic, romantic, or QPR, hell it could be dark)
while I'm not sure if Eastern dragons display hording/possessive tendencies like there western counterparts. But I wanna think Mei due to her dragon instincts gets somewhat possessive over things and people she highly values. From objects like her bikes, and stuffed animal collection to living people like her parents, pigsy and tang who may of been like second parents to her at this point and of course her best friend for eternity MK.
So when red son joins there friend group shes happy at first when him and mk start getting on surprising well. But starts to grow jealous when redson starts cutting into her personal time with mk. Heck at times she feels like he's deliberately trying to hog mks attention.
As much as she loves red she feels the need to assert some boundaries, and remind him or even both of the boys who was here first.
Long Xiaojiao felt sometimes that there was a great big fat divide between her and Qi Xiaotian sometimes.
It wasn't a divide that couldn't be crossed. But it was there. Between her and Red dealing with the Samadhi fire and Xiaotian dealing with the whole "Harbinger of Chaos" stuff with Wukong, there was stuff that they couldn't share because the other wouldn't understand. It sucked, but there was still things to talk about. Especially when Red started tagging along!
Red, like she thought, was a great friend when he finally relaxed a bit. He knew cool demon spots to hang out with and could rattle for hours about different topics. He was fascinating. Xiaojiao's favorite hangout was when he led her and Xiaotian to a secret demon fighting ring and they spent most of the day placing bets (with food) on fighters. Then someone got the bright idea to challenge her to a fight and Xiaojiao enjoyed watching Xiaotian's eyes darken with desire as she fought the guy barehanded.
Xiaotian was her best friend. Hers since the day they met at the park, playing in the mud. Red was also hers, although the desire to hoard him was much less due to the new nature of their friendship. They were happy, all three of them.
And then Red tried to make that divide wider.
At first, she didn't notice. She had been delighted when Red suddenly had a free night on Saturday night, an old tradition of hers and Xiaotian where they had a movie marathon. It was nice to have something that was just them even in the craziness of their lives now. She thought it would only be once.
Except "one free Saturday night" became "every Saturday night was free". It wasn't a problem, not at first.
Not until she looked over to realize that Red had wrapped an arm around Xiaotian to cuddle close and realization struck her like a fist on weird behavior she had noticed from Red. The ability to remember Xiaotian's favorites, the insistence on sitting next to him, oh my gods all the touching.
She loved Red, really. But she loved Xiaotian more.
Her breaking point came when they were at a bar, drinking in congrats for Xiaotian's webcomic finally being published. Of course, most people would be interested because it was the Monkie Kid writing it, but Xiaojiao knew his art style and storytelling would win.
Red leaned close, smiling at Xiaotian like pure sin. "So, Noodle Boy..." The nickname was sweet as sugar, no longer containing a disgusting note. "I had to notice some things about the love interest. They mentioned knowing how they kissed. Unfortunately, I don't think I've won something like that from you before..."
"Oh," Xiaojiao said before Xiaotian could answer. "It's because of this." She patted her lap and Xiaotian stood up, a sweet smile forming across his face. Red raised a brow and then his hair floomed into flames as Xiaotian straddled her, the motion easy.
"Hey," her best friend cooed.
"Hey," she cooed back, her fingers settling in their favorite spots before Xiaotian leaned down and kissed her.
For a few glorious moments, it was just him and her. She didn't need to steal him or lock him away. He gave himself to her, his best friend in the whole world, willingly.
Finally, though, air had the nasty need of being needed and Xiaojiao pulled away. Xiaotian instead settled his chin on her shoulder, sighing contently.
Red stared at them with wide eyes. Then his eyes narrowed.
It was a secret challenge. Xiaojiao answered it back.
(Xiaotian hid his smile in his best friend's shoulder. Hopefully, she and Red got the worst of the instinctual possessiveness out of their systems before his preparations were done.
He intended for them both to be his.)

I’ve been super interested by the amazing work and effort you’ve put into your misfits webcomic series. Though an anxious part of me has been wondering, will this story have a good ending? Like I’m not expecting an overly happy conclusion or anything, especially with what you’ve already established in the webcomic and its lore. Just one that feels nice and or satisfying for anyone that’s been following your work for so long.
That despite the drama and hardships these characters will go through, they’ll eventually find their peace and their own form of a happy ending when the story finishes up. I’m not asking for any major story spoilers, maybe just a hint or two of reassurance about how things might potentially go when we react the final act and or the story’s conclusion. Either way, keep up the great work.
When I first started this series nearly a year ago, I had no idea how it was going to end. Should I give it a good ending? What would a good ending even look like? What if I gave it a fucked up ending? And it occurred to me that I was seeing things in black and white.
The characters we follow will grow and change. We'll see them become better people. We'll see them relapse and become worse. What I will say is that having failed as role models in their human lives, they will serve better in their new roles.
Change is scary. That is why I like to call this a horror story, as much as it's a comedy. As a trans woman who suffers from severe depression, I, too, am making the same journey. I suppose what I'm saying is that I have things to say in this story. Not only to you, the readers, but also to myself. The ending will reflect my ultimate message. I do know what it is and how I'm going to end it, and I hope it'll be satisfying.

Hello, my lovelies! Call me Relika! 😊 I really love comic book and I wanted to make this blog to yap about my favorite ones. Also I have a friend who makes comics and they are extremely talented!!! 🤩 So I wanted also to use the opportunity to support them and bring some attention to their work.
My friend is Vranel! 🖤 They are a very talented artist and they have very interesting projects which I would love to see come to live one day! So please go and show them some love! Here is the link to their Tumblr:
I would definitely yap about their work in the future. 😉
As for me, I am a girl of many interest. I love reading comics of any form, especially webtoons. I also really love games and animations. I plan to maybe do side blogs for them as well, we'll see.
Here are some of my most adored webcomics that I would love to write more about in the future:
Cursed Princess Club by LambCat - OMG!!! I adore this series! I am so sad that it's over! 😥
Unfamiliar by LavenderTowne - I love this adorable comic so much! The artstyle is amazing and so, so cute! It's about little witches, that go on adventures. ❤
The Interpretation of Shadows by nyoomian - This is a more serious story about a character, who can see people's shadows and interpret them. It has a really cool mystery and the way the character solves it is so unique!
Be My Villain by mintibi - An adorable tale of a supposed villain, who falls in love with a boy, whose parents are superheroes.
Clinic of Horrors by Merryweather - Aaaah! I love this comic! It is so cool in artstyle and the story is so unique!
Crow Time by Secondlina_Isa - My boyfriend adores crows and ravens. So does my best friend....how did I end up with these people? 😅 That is why I also started growing fond of them. (It's all your fault guys!) This comic is adorable!
Long Exposure by MARSOID! - OOOOH! The artstyle of this one is amaziiiing! My God! And the story is very cool too! It's about a bully and a nerd that team togheter for a school project and get superpowers....and feelings for eachother. It's cute, it's emotional. it has such a heart wrenching story! Definitely check it out!
Heartstopper by Alice Oseman - I don't think that this comic needs any introduction. It's one of the most adorable queer comics out there and I love it!
The Glass Scientists by Sage Cotugno - This is an incredibly artful story about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde! Aaah! It's mystical, sciency and soooo victorian! I love it! Definitely check it out! (I keep repeating that! Haha! 😄)
There are so many more comics I would love to talk about, but let's save that for later!
