I wanna talk about the pride artwork for HB, because like a lot of other people I have some thoughts.
Tumblr media
Firstly, positives:
It overall looks pretty good imo. The colours are bright and the picture has nice energy. I don't mind the HB/HH artstyle in general, it's mostly the designs that are the problem (the designs in HB are better than in HH). It is very cluttered, but I sorta learned to deal with that and I don't mind as much here.
Millie being there for Moxxie is cute and she looks amazing.
The outfits for some of the characters look good.
Sallie May being a Lesbian is nice (idk why, it just is).
Verosika looks great and very pretty (as always).
I like the idea of Loona taking Octavia to her first Pride parade. I like the idea of them hanging out in general and I want to see more of that.
Beelzebub looks cute.
I like the face Barbie makes (idk either).
Now onto the things I don't like:
Some of these sexualities seem kinda like they were just made up on the spot. Loona being Bisexual is nice, but she literally only ever showed interest in guys and there was never anything that could lead us to assume that she's Bi. The same thing goes for Mammon or Andrealphus. For Andrealphus it seems like they just made him gay to excuse the weird comments he makes about his Sister and especially since a lot of people started using their weird relationship to imply that Stella has some problems as well and isn't just a heartless bitch. Now they can basically just say: "Andrealphus isn't weird towards Stella, he is literally gay, why would he harrass her". I don't mind as much with characters like Bee or Barbie, because they only showed up once and it would've been pretty difficult to confirm their sexualities.
A lot of people mentioned Mammon being Ace just seems like an excuse to not put him in sexual merchandise or something. He is the only fat character in HB (who is actually relevant) and he is one of the two ace characters. It feels sorta disingenuous when the only two ace characters are a teen and the single fat character you have. Especially since, if I remember correctly there were a lot of people (including me) who found Mammon attractive and were looking forward to more sex-positivity for plus sized folks, especially when in Vivzepops shows theres only him and Mimzy (Adam as well maybe).
Why do a lot of the pansexual demons in this show feel stereotypical. Bee and Asmodeus are fine, the background demons as well I guess. Blitzø is super horny all the time and could fill a whole party just with people he slept with. Verosika and her followers are succubi who we saw sexually assault Moxxie. Barbie Wire manipulated a teenage/barely legal human to do what she wants by using her body. And Chaz is a literal and very open sexual harrasser/abuser. The only joke he has are making unwanted sexual remarks toward Moxxie and being horny. He has a sign that says: "I will fuck anything", which isn't what pansexuality is and the wording makes it really weird ("anything" not "anybody"). And he looks at Andrealphus weirdly. Him and Blitzø are also naked for no reason.
I would've loved to see some nonbinary/genderfluid/genderqueer characters. We don't have one confirmed genderqueer character. How about nonbinary Octavia or Vasago. Or genderfluid Moxxie. Or bigender Barbie or something. I just wished we had anything like that. Also a personal headcannon of mine, but Asmodeus should probably be Polyamorous. He is the incarnation of Lust and with how they wrote him in the show it's kinda hard to believe/doesn't make sense that he is in a monogamous relationship.
Where are Mayberry and Martha? They were confirmed to be sapphic and so far they're the only sapphic characters in an actually sapphic relationship we see in HB. Why does Wally get to be there but they aren't? Why is Vasago there instead of them, when he hasn't even showed up in an episode yet? Why is Vasago there in general? It's not like i'm gonna be happy with him being confirmed to be gay because there is nothing we know about him yet.
Why is Tex not there? Did they just forget him? He might be straight but he could still be there to support his girlfriend and isn't he literally Verosikas bodyguard. He was at the weird Blitzø hate party with her, but not here?
Isn't Chaz dead?
Why would Asmodeus and Fizz go to the same parade as Mammon, when the only episode with Mammon so far has dealt with how much he hurts Fizz.
You might say: "This isn't supposed to make sense, it's just a more interesting way to confirm characters' sexuality for pride month, so it doesn't have to make canon/logical sense". Which I would agree with, if they didn't excuse Stella and Striker (two pretty important characters) not being there by saying something along the lines of: "Do you really think they would attend a pride parade?". Maybe not, but I also don't think Chaz would attend a parade, being dead and all. I also don't think that Barbie would go out of her way to go to hell, just to attend a pride parade, especially since her brother is there too. I also don't think Andrealphus would go out of his way to go to a parade filled with imps and people he doesn't like. I also don't think Mammon would be there because it's nothing that brings him money or something. Stella might be straight and that's the reason she isn't here. But her brother (who she seemingly likes and confines in) is there and she could go to support him and her being straight isn't even confirmed, so she could very well be queer. And isn't Striker queer as well? Im sorta confused with that, because they try to make him a bigot (probably also homophobic), but the scene he has with Blitzø in "Harvest moon festival" seems very queer. His offense at sexual remarks could also imply that he is a very sex-repulsed asexual or Demisexual or something. Unless of course they want to use the fact that he doesn't like sexual remark from men as a way to make him seem homophobic (even though him reacting bad to unwanted sexual remarks doesn't mean he's bigoted, like that's well within his rights to be uncomfortable). It's not as if Viv shows restraint with making villians/antagonists queer in general. Mammon, Chaz, Andrealphus are all antagonists in HB and are also there. In HH they literally went out of their way to confirm Vox being in a relationship with Valentino, a rapist. It seems like being Straight/Bigoted/too much of an asshole to show up only applies to the characters who actively dislike Stolas and to the only main female antagonist.

Pride headcanons for School Spirits? (I think it’s called that sorry I don’t go there shdjkfkg)
HI THIS MADE ME SMILE SO WIDE!!! thank you sweet anon for just giving me a pass to speak. unfortunately! (or fortunately!) you have released a demon. I brought pictures!
Tumblr media
Maddie is a bi ace-spec demigirl !! & her pronouns are she/they. Nicole and Si make fun of her all the time for being the stereotype of the bi girl with the lame straight boyfriend. every boy they date comes out as bi afterwards like they're a harbinger of bisexuality. doesn't ID as trans but does ID as nonbinary
Tumblr media
Si is a trans girl (I have decided on calling her Sidney I think), her pronouns are they/she, & they're not super concerned with sexuality labels but ID as sapphic bc their attraction to Maddie is the most important thing. lol. but she has been/will be attracted to men at least conceptually
Tumblr media
Xavier is bi ... he doesn't bring it up often but he doesn't shy away from it either. also I think he calls himself 100% cis and only uses he/him in daily life, but he has neopronouns in the bio of his private twitter (it/hx/they)
Tumblr media
I haven't figured out 100% where I fall with Wally gender-wise but he is definitely 100% painfully bisexual. even if it took him a while to acknowledge it. my guy was born in 1965 and didn't have his first pride until 2024 ... sad </3 someone else had a very compelling case for trans girl Wally also ... which I definitely fw I've been chewing on it. either way there are some gender roles here that need unpacked
Tumblr media
Rhonda is 100% a DYKE!!!! a girlkisser. a girl lover. her comphet has done horrible horrible things to her unfortunately but I think once she realizes that liking girls is actually a thing she can do, and girls' crushes on girls are actually real, she'd be unstoppable. I think she'd be kind of ambivalent about pronouns, like... she's never felt uncomfortable being a woman but she knows she's not the most feminine person in the world so if someone was like “well have you considered pronouns...” she would tell you to use “whatever” but it doesn't make her not a woman. GNC cis I guess
Tumblr media
Janet is an ace lesbian !! she doesn't care about sex she cares about beakers and such. it's not a label she comes across on her own (especially considering her upbringing & when she grew up) but she feels such an immense relief when it's explained to her. ever since she was a little girl she knew she never wanted to marry a man. I think she'd stick with she/her bc she's just glad that being a woman is less of a prison than when she was alive. it's still kind of a prison but much less.
Tumblr media
Quinn is a pan trans girl (she/her) <3 I think she came out as trans as a little girl to her family but started actually transitioning (at least socially) in middle school. she came out as pan as soon as she heard of it & I think she would love putting little pan flags on everything she owns
Tumblr media
Yuri cares NOT for labels!! he's not gay but he's not bi but he's not pan, he's not cis but he's not nonbinary, he's definitely queer but beyond that he's just himself. he mostly uses he/him pronouns because he's been using he/him pronouns for like 50 years, but if you sat down with him to have a conversation about gender he talks about it being made up and that he's not a man, but he isn't not a man, because what makes up a “man” is a stupid concept anyway, and you'd say “so are you nonbinary?” he would shrug and go back to his pottery wheel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nicole & Claire are both cis lesbians I think. Claire is deeply deeply closeted though I think, she's kind of into her own image (especially towards the beginning of the series) & especially concerned with how her parents see & treat her. I think hooking up with boys she shouldn't is her desperately trying to have some control over her sexuality (it's not really working). plus Xavier looks kinda like a butch lesbian if you squint so it's fine. Nicole's sexuality isn't a big deal to her (I also think she's into Maddie but assumes she has no chance with her because Maddie always has some lame boyfriend). she's not out to her parents but is out to her brother + on social media
bonus: (since I ran out of image space) I think Mr Martin is aromantic & gay but probably wouldn't call himself aromantic. and does not want to acknowledge that he's gay because he has enough problems. this is why he killed himself after his female fiancee left him because he cannot pretend to date another woman. imo

I sometimes feel "invalid" or that im invading lesbian spaces bc my lesbian/lesboy attraction is "only" queerplatonic/aesthetic and sensual, or that i should have "more" attraction in order to be an actual lesbian/lesboy or to relate to lesbian experiences/songs
(not to mention that im also sexually n romantically attracted to men, and im a nonbinary guy myself)
i notice so many people who feel the same way as you, so i'll address anyone with this type of queer imposter syndrome, and then especially lesbians and lesboys:
there is no way to be not queer enough, or even "too" queer. it's not a spectrum in terms of intensity. if you're queer, you're queer. a butch lesbian is not more queer than a femme lesbian. a femme gay is not more queer than a gay bear. non binary people are not less queer than binary trans people, and so on! there's no way to be "not queer enough". being queer is the requisite, no one else can determine if you're not queer "enough" because what queer looks like for you and anyone else around you will be totally different, it's on a person to person basis
now especially when it comes to lesbians and lesboys, it really does not matter when it comes to how "intense" these feelings are. a lot of women end up living with another woman whom they generally identify as a best friend, that they do not kiss or have sex with, and don't really identify as partners, but do consider themselves lesbians/sapphic. some women consider themselves lesbians because they want to live with and be around other women and lesbians of whatever gender primarily, even if they are not physically attracted to women and lesbians.
some people believe that a lesbian being bisexual makes them not/less of a lesbian but that's not true, either. queer identities don't cancel each other out. a lesbian being attracted to a man does not revoke their lesbian status, their identity just has multiple layers to it. people do try to invalidate people from being 'real' lesbians all the time and this has to do with radfeminism and lesbian separatism. bisexual lesbians are not "less lesbian," and neither are masc and male lesbians, aromantic lesbians, asexual lesbians, queerplatonic lesbians, and so on
there are many ways to feel attraction toward someone. love comes in a lot of different forms. lesbians can be aromantic and asexual, so why not queerplatonic? lesbians do not have to kiss, cuddle, have sex, exchange pet names, or anything else romantic or sexual if that's not how they feel love, attraction, or experience relationships with other lesbians of whatever gender, or women in general
i hope that helps somewhat, take care of yourself, you're doing just fine. there's no check boxes that have to be crossed off, it's okay to do your own thing

Can I say something. I feel like people are more understanding towards (this does not mean "more accepting towards" btw) nonbinary lesbians than nonbinary gays, like they dont even consider nonbinary gays to exist, I feel like some ppl genuinely think only lesbians can be nonbinary, and people who are gay for men cannot be, or they dont consider that they can be? There's like an inherent association with being a man when it comes to achillean/gaylm, and while that obviously is a big part of achillean/gaylm identity for many people (just like being a woman is for a lot of sapphics/lesbians), the fact there is a lot of nonbinay gays, achilleans, and queer-loving-men is not acknowledged in the same way as the fact there are a lot of nonbinary lesbians, sapphic, and queer-loving-women. And I honestly don't know why. You can just see with how many ppl talk abt nonbinary and/or he/him lesbians, but nobody talks about nonbinary and/or she/her gays.
I am talking abt this in relation to aziracrow and the fact that they can be interpreted as (Aziraphale especially) achillean coded but I have seen people genuinely act like you are misgendering them by calling them gay, bcuz they are not men. Liek. ?? But it's not misgendering to call them lesbians or wlw (even though they're not women either???) like 😭 idek . I feel like this is all also related to ppl seeing nonbinary ppl as women-lite lol
I have NOT been in the fandom for long so idk the general consensus on this stuff, this is just a few things I have witnessed.

Since you have some experience with sexuality, I wanted to ask your input on something.
Growing up as a young girl, the crushes I got on guys were just small blushing, face-heating-up moments and occasional shyness. So when later in life people talked about how attraction to someone felt like a magnetic pull, or fire, or a rush of heat in certain areas... I never got that. So leaning on my own frame of reference, I assumed they were all just being either poetic, performative, or exaggerating just to make intimacy and attraction seem better than it was.
Then... I ended up getting a few of those fiery-jolt-through-the-body moments, years down the line. But when I have gotten them. it was exclusively towards women.
I've also had a few romantic dreams in my life that involved sensuality. All of which involved other women. Also I've noticed since I was younger, especially with some fictional characters, my eyes tended to subconsciously wander to women's breasts before I realized what I was doing, got embarrassed, and had to make an effort to not look. Now I'm wondering if I'm bi with a very very very strong sapphic leaning, or if I've just been lesbian this whole time and was so deep in the closet I didn't know I was in one
Your thoughts?.
Honestly? It could be either one! Not only that, but sometimes the line between both is so wobbly that it's hard to put a pin through it.
I know I'm ferociously attracted to guys in the full body sense, call myself pan because I've had sporadic crushes over the years on girls and nonbinary people, but some people would probably say the evidence suggests I'm gay. But you can be bi and have a preference, even a strong preference, in one particular direction more than the other. David Bowie did.
Ultimately, don't worry about labels too much. Call yourself whatever feels right, like what you like and follow your arrow wherever it takes you, and if down the road you find a different label fits you more, that's fine too! There's no limit on how many we get in a lifetime!

OC INTRO :333
These are my oc’s Emojis! :333 (canonically they are their favorite emojis!)
R.G: 👹
Lilith: 🌊
Max: 🐢
Proper intro to all of them under the cut!!!
RG:
Name: Regina Serenity Zola Park-Smith
Age: 16
Pronouns: Any!
Gender: Nonbinary!
Romantic/Sexual Orientation: Bisexual!
Favorite Color: Red
Personality: Oh this goober is the exact definition of Gremlin. It’s always getting into trouble, even when everyone around her tells them NOT TO DO THE FRIGGIN THING ZE DID. Especially Max, Who typically bails xem out of whatever crap they got into. It really worries everyone around zim, but they don’t care. He almost burns down her house at least ONCE a week, and ends up if not just the hospital but also in their towns newspaper a lot!!! (They even befriended some of the staff!)
Backstory (sort of?)
Their grandmother, Zola, a super rich lady who owns a very successful restaurant in the town that she lives in, absolutely hates all the crap that ze get into and has all these stupid expectations for R.G. which may contribute to their actions! They wanna rebel against her!
Zher parents are nice though! Zis father is the heir to and the head chef at the restaurant and can relate to R.G as he is Zola’s son. He defends them as much as he can and is upset that Zola puts all this pressure on R.G. :(
Its mother is a nurse at the hospital, which is handy seeing how chaotic they are!!! Zis mom is also writing a mystery book!! :3
Other Stuff: They’re 4”11, They really like being out in nature, They have a whole collection of illegal fireworks, and Gets lost a lot.
And Nowwwww on to the next oneeee!!!!
Lilith:
Name: Lilith Jane Sanderson
Age: 16
Pronouns: She/Her
Gender: Demigirl!
Romantic/Sexual Orientation: Demiromantic Asexual Sapphic!
Favorite Color: Blue! (Da ba dee da ba di >:3)
Personality: She’s very frantic, anxious, and shy, and gets scared a lot! But her friends and family are always there to help her when she is (…even though RG is mainly the one to rile her up :’) She’s also incredibly smart and knows a lot about diseases and sicknesses and how to treat them! She wants to be a doctor some day!
She’s also very gentle and caring, and just someone to rely on when you need a friend! (Or a hug, she’s a really good hugger!!)
Backstory thing: Her Dad and Her Cennend are hugeeee nerds and own a bookstore in town!! They are veryyy loving and caring towards her and are the reason why she’s so gentle!! Her parents are also about to have a baby! (I have not decided if someone’s pregnant or they’re adopting or if that even matters, but I picture it in my head and it just looks exactly like her cennend just with her dad’s red hair so.)
She’s quite anxious to be a big sister but she’s gonna be the best big sister ever!!! :3
Her dad also speaks fluent French and taught her that!!
(I feel bad, I feel like I don’t have as much for Lilith as I do for RG. :( Oh well, I guess that means more developing her yaaayyyy!!!!)
Other stuff about her: Is a bookworm (loves historical fiction), loves soft sweaters and plushies, has a voice kinda like fluttershy’s from mlp, and loves manatees!
Max:
Name: Maxwell Stephen Wilson
Age: 17!
Gender: Transman!
Romantic/Sexual Orientation: Aromantic and Gay
Favorite Color: Green!
Personality: He’s very chill, laidback, patient and levelheaded! He tries his best to help his friends when they need it, but has a hard time asking for help for himself. He’s really reserved and quiet and keeps to himself a lot, unless he’s around his friends! Then he comes out of his shell a lil more!!! He can get a little short with RG sometimes, but to be fair they do like to annoy people and poke bears (both metaphorically AND physically. Yeah that’s right.) so I can see why, but also that’s not a good excuse. :(
Backstory: He lives in a small house with his mom and older sister! His mom is a firefighter, and his sister wants to follow in her footsteps! He works at Lilith’s Parents Bookstore (I should name the bookstore- :’) and is very happy there! He wants to be a journalist one day and travel the world!!
He’s typically the one bailing RG out of their shenanigans when things get bad, but sometimes he likes to be in on them! (…mainly if it involves fireworks…) No matter how hard on them he can be sometimes, He really loves him and kinda sees zhem as a younger sibling!!
He loves nature and going outside, and when not at school, working, or with his friends, he can be found chilling in a treehouse behind his home! Other stuff about him: Is a bit of an Athlete (likes soccer and basketball!), dyes his hair green regularly, has a metal shoulder, is an amazing cook, and loves romantic stuff (although he himself is aromantic!)
Anyhoooo!!! That’s the gangggg!!!! :333333
Ask me (or them!) anything you’d like!!! :3

actually maybe i'll say it out loud here because it does concern me.
firstly I want all the babydykes who may read this to know i'm not hating on yr ship for funsies, i'd much rather just be super excited abt a favourite character on my lil corner of the internet, but as a 29yo nonbinary butch lesbian who has Been Through It, it scares me how much romanticized Caitvi is getting especially with the younger viewers.
Like, it is, at the very least in S2, without question an abusive relationship, Cait is abusive to Vi. It's not cute, it's not sweet.
Her going hot and cold, from hitting her and demeaning her, to showing affection is an abuse tactic
Her isolating her from her family and community is abusive
Her seeing Vi's home community as worthy of genocide, as well as acting on those views? Abusive
Her putting the responsibility of her "conscience" on Vi, or having Vi be the one to "stop her" from being violent towards others (a dictator in this case), abusive.
Her setting up the jail sex scene, pushing Vi into a historically violently traumatizing location for her, effectively setting up her sister and Vi to lose each other, just to come down and tell Vi "i told you so" when she sees her self harming, in an enforcer outfit (the people who abused her, her people, and killed her family), and then having sex? Very abusive
And that last point I want to extra highlight because regardless of if Cait set up the whole thing or not, the combination of location, power imbalance, and Vi's mental state at the moment they hook up means that I'm nervous to say if Vi even had the wherewithal to willingly and enthusiastically consent. At the very least that consent was incredibly dubious.
I'm also significantly nervous for the baby butches of this fandom, because an undeniable aspect of why this relationship's abuse is being glossed over by writers and fans alike is because Vi is the victim, and Vi is butch, and Cait is femme.
GNC/Butch women, especially trans women and butches of colour, in sapphic relationships are often seen as un-abusable, ESPECIALLY by femmes. In fact, they're often painted as the aggressors and/or as liking the treatment. This being THE prominent ship in this show is setting a dangerous real life precedent for what to expect or want in relationships. And I know for some folks it's just a ship and I'm reading too much into it ect; but having come from the Skins era of media impact on youth, it would feel neglectful for me to not put this out there.
I'm not tryna hate on your ship in your tag; I'm telling yall that if you're ever in a real life relationship where someone is treating you the way Cait treats Vi; run. You deserve better, you deserve safety, you deserve love.

☆~☆ (Finally) ☆~☆
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Um, hello, my name is Remus (my actual name, not a nickname), I thought I'd FINALLY make an introduction for this account so you can know a bit about to dumbass behind the posts:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
☆Blog info- I mainly post about Arcane here, though I will never EVER post spoilers before the show is released, and once it is out, everything will be labelled as S2 spoilers for ONE MONTH!!! As well as that, I post about other fandoms I'm in, as well as my little thoughts about life that I post under the tag "#remus rambles".
☆Nicknames- Remy, Re, Ratman. (Side note, I love nicknames, so I love when people give me nicknames, as long as they're fun and respectful)
☆Pronouns/identity/etc- They/them, trans nonbinary, queer, sapphic, acespec
☆Age- 18
☆Languages/etc- I'm British and I do only speak English fluently I'm afraid
☆Likes/interests- ARCANE (current hyperfixation), The Owl House, Gravity Falls, MCR, Spiderman, women, Greek mythology, BATS AND SHARKS, Metal and Goth music, Vi from Arcane, women, creating clothes and fashion, The Marauders (not JK, I'm trans, I do not support her), women especially Vi, Hades game, David Bowie, Queen, and lots LOTS more (and did I mention women?)
☆Dislikes/fears/phobias- bugs, conversations about death/life after death (like I have serious thanataphobia, so please don't bring it up), transphobes, homophobes, ableists, general assholes, Nickleback, heavy political talk in my safe space (aka on my tumblr page, where I tend to go to get away from all of that for a bit), general shittiness of life.
☆DNI- if you are any of the above/ will focus on any of the above, if you will be unkind towards others for their fandom opinions (fandoms are meant to be a safe space for everyone to share), if you do not enjoy swearing because I swear a LOT, if you support the use of AI in any context (I am avidly against AI and do not tolerate it at all, im more than happy to explain why), or if you are a Trump supporter or anything like that 👍
☆Other things to know about me- I am disabled and autistic, a wheelchair user and a very proud rat dad. I am always, ALWAYS open to hearing people out if they genuinely wish to educate me as to why some of my views may not be fully considerate of others as long as you are respectful in the way you educate me (often the case when it comes to my white privilege and a lot of things I am still learning)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Other than all that, welcome, feel free to hang around, feed the tism (pop something in my ask box), etc etc. This is a safe space!!!
*was previously xremus-is-deadx but that got old and was sad for any Remus Lupin fans out there, sorry...
hi! I just wanted to ask a question about interacting if it was okay?
I'm nonbinary, ace, into women and definitely not mspec or anything else in any way, but I don't distinctly use the lesbian label (nothing wrong with it of course! I've just never seen a description that includes my nonbinary identity in a way that works exactly to me, and I'm just. picky ig. about how my gender is treated), so I was wondering if I was allowed to interact? I've had some issues before with people not wanting me around on "you don't use the same terms or just don't tend to use labels as much", and I'd try the ace sapphic blog you linked but it seems pretty inactive, so I thought I'd ask!
sorry if I'm being a bother! (>_< ;) I hope you have a really good day, though!
I mean by definition I don't see why you cant but it's not my place to say what labels u wanna use and I can't force the lesbian label on u especially when you said you weren't comfortable with it.
This is a lesbian account as much as it is an asexual one. I wanna show lesbian identity too not just asexual stuff because there is such a massive stigma towards the word lesbian and anything associated with lesbianism, plus the fact that bi asexuality, gay asexuality etc have their own unique experiences. I'm not just sharing general stuff about liking girls which is why i use the tags but i don't promote the blog as being a sapphic blog or wlw blog. It's lesbian. If you don't want to use the lesbian label you dont have to but I dont understand then wanting to access a lesbian space.
hi! i have a question, but before that i just wanted to thank you for giving such amazing sapphic rep in both of your games. as someone who's sapphic (Im a bi girlie) I'm always a little bit disappointed when the female sapphic characters are given not as much thought even when it comes to both female gender locked ros and the female/nb counterparts of gender selectable characters in comparison to the male characters/male counterparts of gender selectable characters in other ifs. i absolutely adore both of your games and the fact that you take such great care with each of the characters' identities, even if they share the same sexuality or gender, they express their gender and sexuality in different ways and i also love the stud rep with hana. And I love that your gender selectable ros in tnp present in a similar way regardless of gender, yet there are still differences in the way that they express it or experience it. my first language isn't English so if i get any terminology wrong please lmk. ❤️
as for my question I was wondering what your thoughts were regarding sapphic ros in IF. do you think gender selectability could be used in a better way to explore a characters' identity in some circumstances. i am curious as to what you think regarding gender locked and gender selectability especially regarding to female/nb ros. i always love to hear your thoughts on different topic so i thought i would ask. ❤️❤️
thank you so much! 💗 now, get ready for a really long-winded response!
honestly, my opinion on genderselectable ROs tends to fluctuate. it's kinda a love/hate relationship, hahaha. there are a lot of games that i think do a fine job handling it, and overall i prefer having the option as a lesbian because typically we don't… get sapphic/gay female characters… like, at all.
now for my controversial opinion: i don't really think most of these female genderselectable characters are actually sapphic. they're just playersexual. and this goes for the opposite, as well, for the male versions. they're not gay or bi they're just playersexual. genderselectable characters can only work if the author is willing to make an effort & flesh out both/all versions of a character as well as acknowledge their sexuality. if one version of the character is meant to be a bisexual woman, then you should be writing her as a bisexual woman. unfortunately i'm sad to say i've seen more than one author publicly admit that this is "too much work," but i suppose i can commend them for being honest about it…
it's been interesting to see this kind of stuff in the IF tag recently. for a while it seemed like we were actually moving more towards favoring genderlocked characters, with set sexualities, and then suddenly it feels like we've ended up in a worse spot than we used to be. i see some really egregious gender essentialism with some genderselectable ROs, down to even their sense of fashion and tattoos changing so the female version can be more feminine and dainty. it's very bizarre, and i really, really do not like it.
i don't necessarily think it's a bad thing for selectable characters to be different. it makes sense in some cases, like if you had a character that was gender nonconforming in all variations. it would make sense that their clothes would be different and their experiences would be different. i even think it can be interesting to explore how certain characters are affected differently by society because of their gender. if you had a character like Lea that existed in a misogynistic society like ours, their experience as a butch would be very different from their experience as a masculine trans man or androgynous nb person… and they would also share a lot of similar experiences, too! but this is not what i usually see. it's usually just… woman: wears pink, is shorter and skinnier, has long hair. man: wears blue, is big and muscular, has short hair. nonbinary (if there even is a nb variation): thin and androgynous artbreeder mashup of the other two. and then in every other aspect they are the same. unfortunately, that's as far as some authors are willing to take it. the rare times i do see someone add in differences it's always just the female version experiencing some form of misogyny that her male counterpart does not, with very little elaboration or reflection.
i don't really think i need to explain why that kind of characterization is a problem.
i do think there is a lot of potential with the gender selection mechanic. i've tried to do something interesting with Lea, and i like to think i've been successful with it. but in my honest opinion, if you want to write a story about gay and/or sapphic characters, you should just genderlock them. for one, the IF audience at large is always going to favor the male version of your character. that is just a fact. if your only female or nb characters are selectable, they will be erased by the wider IF audience. i know this sounds kind of cynical, but this is my honest opinion & my experience as someone who has been involved in this community for almost four years now.
i think if you are someone who is setting out with the intention of writing a sapphic RO, you are doing them a disservice by making them genderselectable. just genderlock them! you may get people that complain, but they can suck it up or go play something else. and i don't think i need to tell you this but just to be clear, genderlocking gay or trans characters is not the same as a game with an all straight or all cis cast. it just simply is not. cis, straight, & white people are already considered the "default." most games already cater to this demographic. it is not the same to genderlock or even lock your characters race or ethnicity to something other than cis, straight, or white. cis, straight, white people are not a minority. you are not underrepresented. there are millions of games out there for you to play. & it's irritating when people pretend like someone getting upset at the exclusion of gay people (or any other minority, for that matter) from a game is somehow comparable to another game "excluding" straight people (or white people, or cis people). arguing this is just blatantly ignoring the reality of our misogynistic, racist, homophobic & transphobic society. again, straight people are not underrepresented. you are automatically included in almost everything except the gay media that gay people create themselves.
gay women especially are repeatedly left out of IF. unless you want to go read yuri VNs (which, no offense, don't really do it for me most of the time) you're pretty much shit out of luck. there are very few lesbian ROs out there, fewer gnc women, almost no butches and definitely no studs that i've seen in this specific tumblr/cog IF space.
so all of this to say, if you do really want to make your characters genderselectable, then just take your time with it. really think about how their gender may change their experiences within the world of your game. does it change anything at all? maybe not. there does not need to be a drastic difference at all if it's not applicable. don't loop back around into gender essentialism. but you should still think about it, and consider what the gender selectable mechanic can offer as a narrative and characterization tool.
what is my plan for this character? what am i trying to accomplish with them and their story? does making them genderselectable add to that narrative or does it hinder it? how can i explore the potential differences between these versions of this character without falling into and reinforcing harmful stereotypes? how does their sexuality impact their experience? i think these are some of the questions authors should ask themselves when deciding if they want to make their characters genderselectable.
Love how many of the JJK characters are already queer in the post-timeskip
Since we have… Yuta and Rika (Lesbians)
Miwa and Mechamaru (T4T)
Kinji and Kirara (okay Kirara is probably some flavor of queer in canon but still enby4enby)
Also shoutout to Ilia with his funky gender!
Let's keep going, Happy Pride Month! (you have any other folks/HCs?)
I have a lot, but I'll keep it to JJK characters for now.
Gay Megumi
Aromantic Maki
Lesbian Nobara? Maybe?
Aroace Yuji? No labels Yuji? He appreciates people's inner beauty but also isn't opposed to looking at what he sees as a pretty woman. Demisexual aromantic straight? Or maybe more like Aegosexual homoromantic? Some kind of gray-asexual at the very least, and either homoromantic, aromantic, or demiromantic, but very much needs time to form a romantic bond.
Aroace Kento
Lesbian Utahime
Toge is SOMETHING. What? I don't know yet lol. Possibly gay
Gay Satoru. He/him nonbinary with sky/blue pronouns
Either gay or bi Suguru. Leaning towards bi. He's also he/him enby
Aroace agender Shoko
Transman bisexual Haibara
I think I got an ask about Todo being a gnc cisgender guy and I like that (him dressing in drag in his free time seems like something he would do, it would also be neat for Kento to introduce Dodo to Todo since Dodo also does drag)
Nonbinary Uraume
Genderfluid Takaba
Noritoshi, like Toge, is something, but I don't know what. Might go with aromantic, asexual, or aroace
I don't mind trans Yuki, but honestly her and Choso being cishet together is something I like a lot
Choso, Eso, and Kechizu (along with any other death paintings if they were reborn) probably have some identity issues that would translate to their gender because of their memories from their vessels mixing in with the nature of their own consciousnesses
OH! Actually, with that! I think I'd like Yuki to be a detransitioned cis woman (so she thought she was a transman/transmasc for a bit of her life but then realized she was a woman). She helps Choso find out who he is as him and not just as a curse/entity, human, vessel!
Aroace Sukuna maybe? Like high libido but just does things for the pleasure of physicality rather than a drive he has
Curses don't really have sexualities/genders that can be easily translated to human society, similar for how Trolls can't really be "queer" in a human lens as they have their own societal structure on gender and romance.
That being said:
She/Her Hanami, no gender or sexuality (anything is a go for her but she wouldn't use the pan or bi or omni labels, or any gender labels. She's fine with anything and is very passive on her self image)
He/Him Jogo, possibly gay, possibly aroace and just wants connections with people without realizing it (kinda the same idea of how Eve needs others to make herself feel complete, so perhaps Jogo is like her and also demisexual/demiromantic)
Mainly he/him Mahito, but honestly I can see him using any pronouns (especially any of my human Mahitos who are usually genderfluid. Even if curse/entity Mahito just uses he/him, I can still see him being genderfluid in a sense of physically changing his form to whatever he likes including a feminine and androgynous form)
They/Them Dagon. No thoughts, head empty when it comes to gender or sexuality. It's not really something they dwell on at all. Closest thing would probably be agender?
He/Him Kurourushi. Transmasc aroace lesbian or sapphic? (made an art of curse Kurourushi and Smallpox Deity and someone tagged it as wlw and that shit hit me hard! So Kurourushi is definitely transmasc, but might identify genderwise as still a woman or at least nonbinary). [This also goes for my human versions]
She/Her Smallpox Deity. Acoace lesbian, Cisgender
He/him, maybe also they/them Ko-guy. Transmasc/transman
Rainbow Dragon is something. At least their human version is. They/them for them, but not sure about anything else, or if their curse version is anything. I need to revive them as a curse/entity in the Eriverse lol
Don't know about the Roppongi curse, but they have something going on with the Mannequin, but it's not FWB or something like that. Possibly a QPR? Also I think he/they for Roppongi curse (which I still need to make a name for them)
They/Them Mannequin Curse. Acts like a knight in shining armor for Roppongi curse. Will throw their life away for him. I think it's kinda like how Pearl is with Rose Quartz, but also not exactly that way. Very much a lot of love there but not in a romantic or sexual way. Possibly aroace, at the very least aromantic.
Kenjaku identifies as a cisgender man, he/him. However, when he is in a female body then technically he could be seen as transgender. He will play the part of a woman based on society's expectation in order to fit in to get what he wants, but he still always identitfies and believes he is still a cisgender man. His sexuality though is probably all over the place or demisexual where he needs to get attached to the person himself (with some exceptions he's had in his life). Otherwise he is just following the instincts of his body if he gets bored enough and wants to have fun.
I think Miguel Oduol and Larue have explored each other at some point? But like just to see what it was like? Otherwise I see those two are cishet.
Manami is bisexual but really has only dated men. Usually just has fantasies about women but never really acts on it, not because of society or something, but because she hasn't had a chance really
Toshihisa Negi. I almost forgot about this guy from Suguru's group, but his design looks really cool/fun and I can see him being queer. Perhaps he is bisexual as well or gay.
Alright, that's all I have for right now. I probably missed a major one somewhere (had to go back and write for Yuji and Nobara because I forgot those two lol). But yea, this is what I got at least for the JJK cast! Both can be applied to Eriverse and JJKverse (and some for my Swap JJK AU as well lol).
I keep thinking abt this and. okay bear with me. I think the reason I think "there is no such thing as Bad or Problematic Representation as long as it's made by a member of an in-group for enjoyment by that in-group" doesn't really work is because too many definitions of like, A Marginalized In-Group are very large. If your definitions of a marginalized group are, like, "queer people" or "poc" or "women", you are absolutely going to find that "bad representation" or whatever is possible. The other day I used as an example a hypothetical piece of sapphic media where the only bisexual woman is a manipulative infidel, possibly even hinted to "not ACTUALLY like women", but there are plenty of actual examples too. Richard O'Brien is nonbinary and Rocky Horror is still Kind of a transmisogynistic movie (even ignoring what he's said about Germaine Greer lol). VivziePop is bisexual and you people still act like that gay spider was written by the ideological equivalent of the Westboro Baptist Church. There are an innumerable amount of women authors who have been criticized for writing misogynistic tropes, often directed at "sluts" and "whores". Within different nonwhite communities there is colorism, classism, religious discrimination, racism towards other people of color that is ignored if you say "poc representation" as like, one thing. Something made "by Latinos, for Latinos" can still present the racist dichotomy of "respectable, hard-working, good Latinos" and "bad Latinos", the unemployed, the addicted, the "ghetto", the undocumented immigrants. So many gay people have absolutely awful things to say about other gay people, trans people about other trans people, women about other women, people of color about other people of color, disabled people about other disabled people. I don't think this is what people mean when they defend a creator who is part of X group from accusations that they are making Bad Representation of X group (i.e. if I got flack for representing polyamorous, sexually active bisexual characters, as a polyamorous and bisexual person who does not view these traits as negative), but it is still undoubtedly a direction that that can be taken in, especially with definitions of certain groups as broad as "queer" or "of color."
I wish Laidir-Rook being a former Tevinter galley slave didn't get introduced in a throwaway line of walk-and-talk dialogue, BUT the more I think about it, the more I love it for Mahri and specifically for how it makes her joking 'purple' personality more complex.
(Veilguard endgame spoilers included; Tessa and Thorn don't click!)
This has been cooking in my mind since I talked to Morrigan in the Crossorads and she said something about Rook being more clever than they let on - but I think a lot of Mahri's personality and presentation, throughout her life, has been a front.
She's cis, but visibly GNC and butch, and one of the reasons she and Taash became besties was Mahri opening up about her weird relationship with gender and being a woman. See, if she was born into slavery, it might have made sense for her parents to raise her as a boy, to try and protect her from the horrors faced by enslaved women and girls, at least a little. I think she kept it up throughout her adolescence (and was very grateful to have a small chest when puberty hit her, probably at a later age due to malnutrition) and was still presenting as male when she was freed by the Lords.
At which point she met Isabela, of all people, who's such an interesting example of femininity, sexuality, and bravado. For Mahri, this happened probably around age 19, maybe 2-3 years after she hit puberty, and she absolutely had the BIGGEST crush on Isabela, understandably. But it was the 'do I want be with her or be her' sort of baby sapphic crush, too, and she experimented a little with being more feminine. Grew her hair out a bit, wore all sorts of jewelry, tried makeup. Wore dresses, skirts, tried to give her cleavage some oomph.
And it didn't work in either way (she was way too young for Isabela to take her seriously, and they worked this out over drinks at the Hilt. Mahri only got a little weepy about it), and she talked with some of the other members of the Lords who are trans or nonbinary, and decided that she didn't feel like any of that either. She likes being a woman, just... a different sort of woman. Claiming womanhood feels like taking back something that was stolen from her in her childhood, and so does saying 'I'm a woman no matter what I look like or how I dress'. So she cut her hair short, but kept one little braid just for fun and because she can decorate it with beads sometimes. Settled into being herself, learned to fight, got stronger, got more confident.
The Lords are heavy on bravado, though, and less so vulnerability, at least in large groups. So she learns to boast and laugh and drink and fight, and she makes friends easily, but lets very few people know her innermost thoughts, if any. Isabela was a mentor of sorts when she was first freed, but Mahri's always a little awkward around her after the whole crush situation. She flirts, and has flings, and makes sparring buddies and drinking companions, and earns gold and glory, and that feels like enough most of the time? It's a pretty good life.
Varric is probably the first person she opens up to deeply in a long time, partly because he picks up on the fact that there's more under the surface than her jovial meathead outward persona, and partly because he has what she's been lacking - a sense of purpose, of working towards a more just world. Because you don't just forget being a slave for most of your life, do you, even if you're free of that life for years? She carries it with her, in her firm belief that people should own and make reparations for their mistakes (which, when she said as much to Mythal, got her a bonus dragon fight for her trouble), and in the absolute hatred and fear she has of the Venatori and their ilk. Varric coaxes that out of her over their time together, and he becomes a real mentor to her.
She doesn't stop making jokes or sarcastic comments, but she also starts to feel more confident with his support, and it hits especially hard when she gets to the Regret Prison, because she's only gotten this far with what she thought was Varric's guidance and encouragement, and the idea that she has to step out of that shelter and own her own decisions, fully accept a leadership role as Mahri and not as Varric's proxy, is terrifying. She doesn't want to be exposed in that way, but she has been all along.
That actually dovetails well with her relationship with Neve, because she's been kind of baffled as to why this brilliant woman is interested in her, and realizing that she stepped out of someone else's shadow a long time ago makes it make sense, in a way that makes it feel so much more real.
TALES OF MUNDANE MAGIC, VOLUME FOUR by Shaina Krevat features episodic slice-of-life stories in a world where magic is mundane, but not constant. It's one more skill that people have, but which not everyone feels comfortable engaging with or wants to learn.
This is the “Oops, all Queer” volume of what will hopefully be many more to come. The trend begins with a few minor and secondary characters, and then gradually it becomes clear that this group of teens is more queer than was obvious in the earlier books. Age-wise, they're at one of the inflection points that would naturally lead to figuring out who they like romantically or sexually (if anyone) and what that looks like. In at least one case a character had known they were queer for a while, but it just haven’t come up to the reader before. When it does, it's worked in subtly but specifically, in a way that is unmissable for similarly queer readers and hopefully clear to others. One thing that I especially appreciate is that there doesn’t seem to be any idea of a "closet" to come out of for these characters. There are things that haven’t been mentioned yet, others that are hard to know about oneself until a particular crush happens, and characters who are just queer without constantly discussing it. All of that combines to feel like the world of TOMM has opened up and claimed contemporaneous queer existence without implying that the characters were previously hiding anything. My understanding is that part of the author’s goal for the series is for it to be a world that isn’t necessarily free of every prejudice, but at least isn’t copying and pasting the troubles of our world into this one. What's certain so far is there's no detectable queerphobia, or its varietals, and for that I’m very grateful.
