Make A EXP + Level Up System Code Write Up - Part 1.
This is a blog post about my level up and exp system so far.
I created a widget for the level and EXP system, promoted text boxes to variables for binding, and positioned the bar carefully to prevent interference with dialogue text and battle information.
I referenced the game instance to store EXP and level data, meaning when it comes to the exp and levels, I have to cast to this game instance. Originally this info was in the player character, but I moved it to the game instance for consistency across the game, preventing complications from managing separate systems for different characters.
I referenced the game instance to retrieve the current level, formatted it as text with the word "level" followed by the value in brackets, allowing the widget to display the level correctly.
The same had to be done for the other two.
I created a widget for the level and EXP bar, ensuring it displays during gameplay in both the overworld and battle world, providing consistent progress tracking across different game modes.
I created an event dispatcher in both characters to bind data to the widget, cast to the game instance for EXP values, calculated progress, and updated the progress bar, providing real-time visual feedback on the player's EXP.
How my dialogue box looks like now after rearranging it.
These are my new variables inside the game instance. These are, Current EXP, Required EXP, and Current Level.
The value for current exp needs to be 0, because thats the standard starting point. This will always move up. In decimal points too.
The number 70 is random. The required EXP indicates the amount needed to level up and stays fixed, even in decimal points, ensuring that the value does not change while progressing through levels.
The current level will always be 1 in its starting point. This will move up by every integer.

THE VALENTINES DRAWINGS ARE PEAKKKKK WHY DOES MY UMBLR NOT SHOW THEM TO ME. transfem wolfgang was great..... mark being a little ebtich was great..... Arturo and Diana are such polar opposites its so funny
I don't know why some of the posts seem to have been hidden from appearing on people's dashboards, but it was definitely an issue :( maybe it's because I was posting too many times per day? there are definitely people who post more times per day than me though, and I don't think they were getting shadow banned... regardless, I'm going to post the masterlist, like, immediately after this, so hopefully if anyone missed any of them the masterlist will allow them to see it now.
anyways, thank you! I'm gonna put the rest of your asks under the cut so as to not tempt the "posting-too-many-times-per-day gods' as best I can :)
Arturo and Diana are a silly pairing. I wonder if Diana would remind Arturo of Felicity at all.......
idk some tsundere loser I found in the basement
head canon? more like CANON (/j)
but yay, I'm glad I could spread the word of AU tgirl Wolfgang :)
if Mai Akasaki was southern the DRDT killing game wouldn't have happened; that's the secret truth no one is talking about (/j). ignore this if Mai actually turns about to be southern
(I love writing David's mind games he's so funny)
y'know, at first I was actually worried that people would be mad that I went too romance-coded on the Min/Eva comic. I now see that I was foolish for even entertaining that as a fleeting thought o7
oh I was just drawing it as Charles being embarrassed from mark clowning his ass, but your version is also really sad/funny. I'm glad some of your faves were matched up together ^_^
and hey, Charles dying at least might be closer than you expe--
#thank you for sending all of these in I chuckled heartily#that goes for everybody who left comments!!! thank you all i greatly enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts#danganronpa despair time#drdt#project: eden's garden#p:eg#Damon maitsu#Wolfgang akire#nico hakobyan#David chiem#mark berskii#charles cuevas#fanganronpa#ask tag?????

Since writing nonsense about SSO and sharing it with people improves my life by 2%, I'm doing it. It still turned out to be much longer than I wanted, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I decided to do some tasks on my side account from the free star rider and... it felt like 7 years ago. These are the quests before rescuing Lisa, in the stone circle. Old models, old soundtrack, old everything. I really hope they won't change it, PLEASE. Almost a year ago (I think) they changed these starting quest, and during the summer they changed the rewards for Moorland quests (e.g. This Bobcat sweater, Condrad jacket, etc.). I don't know about the dialogues, but I hope they didn't change them. Why fix something that isn't broken? New models to "modernize" the game? Ok, but why change the content of the task, cut out some things or write them again? When you do quests, it is clear which are new and which are old. The old quests took 2 weeks to complete, you had to drive around the entire map, and at the end you got 100 shillings and some gift with weak stats. New tasks last 5 minutes, they only consist of you clicking on the dialogue and at the end you get a super cool gift, 2000 exp and 500 shillings.
It had such a dark and mysterious atmosphere, these old quests from the old team were just... I feel such strange sadness, longing, emptiness and other emotions that I don't even know how to describe? I miss something I barely knew.
I keep thinking about how sso could have developed if the old team had handled it, what the plot would have been like, what the 4th Dark Rider would have looked like, etc. (I don't sleep at night because of it). Now the SSE team has financial problems, and I have great hopes that they will try to do something about it and get back on track. Well, because greedy people never think long-term, sooner or later the fountain will dry up (in fact, it is already drying up to some extent).
My (corny) conclusion? Replacing old models with newer ones so that the game doesn't look outdated is fine, but when they are completely different from the original and when they want to change everything and write from scratch, it makes my blood boil. Dear SSE, if you are bored, update the outdated codes and bugs that have been in the game for several years instead of changing the game's plot by 90°.

NP Mechanic Update!
I totally wasn't expecting the results on the last poll, so here's an update about the changes I'm doing to the NP system!
Overall, I'm happy with how the NP choices turned out, but I wasn't really satisfied with how you gained NP/Max NP per chapter. I wanted it to be a precious resource, but even without the "threat" of potential consequences later, it seemed too restrictive considering the limited amount you get.
But with the new difficulty settings, I figured out a new system that I'm more happy with. Here are the major changes:
You will now recover 1 NP* whenever you make a choice that has a notification
You now gain +1 Max NP for every 2,500 EXP** gained (this makes getting EXP actually meaningful)
Beginning with the school bus scene: If you don't have enough NP for a choice, you can take a "loan" of up to 99 NP
When you are below 0 NP, you will gain the 🤯 [Headache!!!] Status Effect (this means MC will always be below 0 NP after the school bus scene to serve as a tutorial)
You can't take any more NP loans while you have a headache, and the penalties are equal to the amount of NP you're missing (-50 NP means -50% All Stats and EXP)
You will no longer gain Max NP when completing a chapter
You still gain NP for completing a chapter, but the amount you gain is now based on your Max NP (this means the amount will be more consistent since it will no longer be based on the difference between your current NP and Max NP)
All quests now reward Max NP
Easier difficulty will now give less EXP, and Harder difficulty will give more EXP (since it didn't make sense the other way around)
*This amount is based on the difficulty you selected.
** This amount is also based on the difficulty, but even with Easy Difficulty giving less EXP, you should still gain more Max NP overall (and vice versa)
Being able to slowly recover NP during the chapter means you can now feel less guilty when picking choices with a lower NP cost, although I'll have to adjust some of the NP costs so you still need to think about what to spend it on.
The new loan feature will hopefully make higher-cost NP choices more accessible, while also giving it more of a risk vs. reward mechanic. Is a short-term advantage or changing the story branch worth an EXP and All Stats Penalty for the rest of the chapter? This also makes it less frustrating if you are a few NP short of a choice you wanted to make.
My only problem with this, is that it'll now be awkward and clunky to check for your current NP amount since you have to check the stats screen every time... but I can't really do anything about that. I could add it to the notifications, but they're cluttered enough already. Just another reason to make me more excited to develop the VN, I guess. Hehe.
Anyway, I'm just about done coding the new changes, so I'm almost back to writing actual scenes again! What do you all think? Lemme know your thoughts!

YAY TOOK EM LONG ENOUgh
Also oooh we getting any p5 ships? PEGORYU MAYBE
((im too excited to keep this to myself lol, i love the smt persona series if anyone was curious, but i wanna explore yosuke meeting all these persona users who came before his group and after his group. i think thats neat :) i been trying to think of a way to have them all meet without it seeming like im just throwing characters together, least i hope it comes off that way, im not super confident in my writing but goddamn if im not having a great time doing this. idk if anyone was as invested in the p5 flower child au as i was, but i was suuuper into it, tatsujun parenting means the world to me. cant wait to draw dilf tatsuya for p5 ships, i might! theres a couple p5 ones i think are cute like makoto/haru or pegoryu bc i have taste- now more insane ramblings under the cut bc i cant shut up
i do wanna say some ships i wont be doing so yall can see inside my twisted mind- * i dont ship futaba with anyone, shes so baby sister coded to me, i cant it feels illegal * im not a big fan of akechi lol and with the way im loosely following the plots of the persona games, akechis not gonna show up unless he was mentioned/flashback, bc... yk... he kinda... well thats spoilers but ykyk. also theres only room for one detective prince in my heart (naoto)
to round it off some fun plot points i wanna explore (feel free to add any thru asks too i think its fun to have this be collaborative) * Souji and Akira get velvet room time together, souji gets to chill in a nice limo, akiras always in jail, its goofy * ryuji, futaba, and ann bumping into rise and naoto walking around the central shopping district, ryuji goes nuts bc thats rissette, ann goes nuts bc thats rissette and the original detective prince, futaba makes a joke that theyre dating bc naoto and rise are walking closely and have matching necklaces, kanji shows up, kanji also has a matching necklace. ryuji falls to his knees and yells YOU CAN DO THAT????????? * i have a cute idea for Rise and Ann talking about their inspirations for how they both got into their lines of work, i think they have a lot of overlap * Haru and Yukiko talking about having to take over their family businesses, the stress of it, being grateful for having the opportunity but also resenting said opportunity * Kanji, Ryuji, and Chie training together, talking about why they train, how they become stronger to be able to protect ppl they care about (kanji with biker gangs for his mom) (chie fighting off bullys who pick on kids, and her exp with Takeshi from her slink) (Ryuji training to continue to protect the track team hes no longer part of) * Futaba and Yosuke talking about video games, yosuke becoming overwhelmed by just how much futaba knows about video games, new baby sister unlocked * ryuji and teddie almost get arrested, they hype each other up too much, dangerous combo * Makoto and Naoto have a law and order moment * Nanako and Futaba talking about dads :) an opportunity for Futaba to feel like someones elder while Nanako makes Futaba feel like shes the younger one. why is nanako so responsible. * hey yall ever remember that ken amada p3 is the same age as the p5 cast, they were all born in 1998, isnt that-))

New Dog's Life chapter today! ~ 3rd Life series fan-season
Chapter 33 - “Cinders (Etho)”
❤️ Read on AO3
💛 Start from Chapter 1
💚 More Pixels Imperfect fics
---
"But for real, the most beautiful thing Lizzie did was treating me like a stranger. She didn't see him." Sniff sounds like he's floating, eyes like glaciers. "I'm never going to stop being 'Joel 2.0' to you. Am I?"
Etho finally tells SnifferMyFeet what happened between him and Joel post-Double Life. Sometimes people slip right through your fingers... It's just weird it happened twice.
#smalletho - Etho/Sniff tension followed by several flashbacks about Etho's past with Joel (bed sharing, cuddling, teasing, discussing Joel's kids (Hermes & Tiny Tom), and Etho trying to learn Joel's boundaries, which Joel avoids defining)
(First 1,000 words under the cut)
---
Yeah, we allogrooming (chewing on each other's code strings and pulling them with mouths to straighten them); keep scrolling
---
Etho - Fox
Status: Keep 'em guessing
Self-taught programmer, full-time hero
💙 🧡 💚
It's familiar, but not in the way you think. It's familiar because the universe speaks to itself (to his soul) each time it checks he's doing okay. Especially on full moon nights. When the moon reaches down its light, Etho adjusts his footing and licks his lips, then chews its fingers and nuzzles back.
Give yourself a shake. Fluff up your fur. It's the arctic fox way. Then you run off to do exactly what you're meant to do, because you're born of the universe and were given conscious thought so you could love your role. The mobs play their part. You play yours. Beneath silver moonlight, we meet and make merry, for tomorrow we're AFK for weeks or months on end. You're born in the code. You live forever. And that's just the way of things.
Which is to say that snuggling up next to Sniff, one hand pressed to the back of his shoulders to hold him down against the mattress, is one of those wild things that's new and familiar at the exact same time. You remember all those tools we were gonna clean his code with? Yeah, those are beginner's toys. This is how it's done right.
It's a work of teeth and tongue: nipping code beneath his skin with glowing teeth and pulling it to straighten strings. It's goopy, thick, and messy. It's the way of the world; song as old as time.
Sniff keeps very quiet, his hands stretched out in front of him. He kneads the pillow. They don't speak. Not now. Etho keeps his hand firm, bearing weight on Sniff through a blanket so their pixels won't blend together, as he makes his way around cheek, neck, shoulder, and back. Sniff's filled with stagnant energy. It doesn't move fast - doesn't carry the parts that need attention towards Etho's mouth the way it should - but his tongue's doing the job the activator whisk should do. It ripples through his code. It stirs the stuff awake. That'll get him moving. Sniff gives a big, silent yawn that splays his fingertips and flicks his tongue. Then he turns his head away. His wings flex like a butterfly's and slowly fold against his back.
Etho keeps working. The mask's been dropped aside for this- It's just easier than letting it dangle at his neck. He nips with his teeth, catching strings, and fixes everything he can. There's only so much you can do with stagnant code. Most species don't eat it, but a fox can. Like the phantoms, they scavenge.
Etho takes the stuff Sniff doesn't need. He doesn't need scratches and aching muscles. He doesn't need chipped nails and dirty feet. He doesn't need the callus on his writing finger, the ink stains, or the ache between the V of two fingers. These are little add-ons (just wrinkles in the code). Etho pulls them free of soul and skin. They slip between his teeth.
Sniff drags Etho's other hand forward. Etho shifts, keeping balance. His hand's pretty neat and tidy after the week-long experience of Sniff cycling his code. Sniff nibbles at it anyway. The bits in his system that are ruffled prickle to attention and swish the messy bits forward so Sniff can gnaw the tangles away. Yeah, that's the spot. Etho thumps his tail against the bed.
Unlocking advancements feels like this. And the universe loves them, and it gave them thought without breaking the ecosystem, because it wanted them to know they're loved.
If there's an advancement for allogrooming, it's one he achieved a long, long time ago. Probably when he was just a kit. Not a lot of memories from the early days still stick with him, but he does remember Rhetoric chewing on his ear. He had fox ears back then. They used to wrestle with each other, but growing up is complicated. Sometimes you do the best you can every day of your life… and for what? Your mother will still pick you up by the scruff and drop you on the doorstep of a dragon she thinks could use you more.
He and Bdubs have that in common. Bdubs just refuses to admit it.
Oh yeah… We can't let the Slime Dragon see Sniff. She'll wanna kill him so he respawns at his mom's nest. Etho yawns. He stops messing with the code. Instead, he nestles his chin against the back of Sniff's neck. What time is it? Feels like they've been here for a thousand ticks, but it's such a blur that it could easily be half as much. It probably isn't. It can't be that long… He hasn't been called to Dog's Life yet.
Sniff chews at his fingers for a little longer, but his teeth slow too. He rests his cheek against his knuckles. Etho sweeps his tail sideways, brushing it across Sniff's back. He's warm. And without the nips and pulls, consistent collision isn't going to last. Pixels prickle. His chin starts to sink straight through.
It's familiar. But not the way you think. He never groomed Joel like this, with his mouth, except one time he had to re-open some rumpled bite marks that had sealed themselves in ridges across his shoulders. Long story there… but it's familiar because the universe told him this feels right tonight.
And it does feel right tonight. He's not gonna leave the mask off for long. Or the bandana, for that matter. He's way too exposed like this, raised blue scar curling over his eye and across his lips (all of it on display). Sniff probably feels the same way. He's still got both his shirts off. The curve of his spine's marked with a stripe. When you're this close, you can see the tiny zigzag marks where skin meshes like it's stitched. His giant scar - that big, white X - pulses with a dim, hazy glow.
Etho removes his head before he can sink any lower. He noses Sniff's cheek, then his chin. Once they're upturned, he gets back to work. A little more clipping here. A little trimming there. Making his way around. Sniff makes one soft noise like he's debating whether to squirm away. He keeps his eyes shut though, arms relaxed, and his wings stay folded up- lazy and content. Etho adds a few licks, keeping them light so he can seal the tiny gashes left behind by his teeth without startling Sniff enough to ask questions about 'what they are' again.
Funny. Last week, we did this the other way around. But he doesn't go as far as Sniff did. Tonight's about grooming, not feeding. Etho chews a knot from the back of Sniff's neck, then draws back. "Hey, Sniff, you-"
"My full name, Etho," he mumbles, not opening his eyes. "I only have one rule."
Right. Etho rasps his tongue around his lips and starts again. "SnifferMyFeet, I want to ask something."
"Mm?"
"I know we said we wouldn't be 'serious' right now. I've just been wondering if maybe, after I do recordings and Hermitcraft clean-up… If you'd want to eat my soul again?"
Sniff's fingers still against the sheets. They alternate whose turn it is to breathe, like they used to at night on The Relation or when they were testing how far they could swim without coming up for air. Spoilers: Oxygen does not transfer from one soulmate's body to another.
Then Sniff blinks himself back to full awareness. He sits up on his knees. The covers slide down his back. Hands still braced, but no longer looking cozy. The guy reaches to pinch his brow and take his folded tank top at the same time. "You… want to use my vessel? Fluff, I dunno. Can I say that? I think I can."

Miri-
I don't know much about you, I'm sorry. All I heard was that you were a fighter, brave and fierce, and that Gale loves you so. I wanted to say... thank you? I suppose? I know, it's out of the blue, and you're probably completely baffled right now, so I can only apologize. But Gale is so wonderful. He is so brilliant and kind and he deserves someone who will lift his spirits.
But you deserve Gale, too. I know he wouldn't stay with someone who didn't treat him with the utmost care and affection, not anymore. So I know he's in good hands. He is my dear, dear friend, and I am so glad to see him happy. But that he makes you happy too, that's important.
You take care of one another, you hear? If he gets on your nerves, come by for a chat and a treat. I'm outside the city, near Cloakwood's edge. Left at the faerie ring. You're welcome anytime.
-Your friend
Miri’s relaxing in the late evening sun on the tower balcony when Corvus arrives with a letter strapped to his leg. She wasn’t expecting a new contract from the Confluence any time soon, so she’s perplexed when she takes the note from him. Miri offers the dire raven a series of affectionate scritches in reward for the delivery and the great bird crows happily.
Her confusion mounts when she opens the letter. Not the usual coded message - and not a note from a packmate either. Something written in Common, and in an unfamiliar hand, no less.
“Who...?” Miri squints as she tries to parse through the words. But so much of it is vocabulary she hasn’t learned yet. She recognizes her name at the opening. And Gale’s name numerous times. “Sorry...fight, brave...lo-ve...”
Miri growls tersely as her frustration trying to read mounts. Note in hand, she swings her legs over the seat to stride into the study in search of her mate.
“Fenor?”
“Over here, my love.” Gale’s voice answers from the seating around the fireplace further inside the room. She finds him reading a thick tome by firelight, but he looks up as she approaches with a warm smile and eyes glittering in the warm glow. His expression shifts when he notes her mood and the paper in hand. “From Talmeria? Something amiss?”
“No, not Talmeria,” Miri returns with a shake of her head, glancing to the writing once more. Unfamiliar, and certainly not in the Confluence’s style. “I am not sure who from.”
Miri proffers the letter to him, causing him to raise a curious brow. But when he catches a glimpse they furrow with a confusion.
“Who would write you in Common?” Gale questions with a curious murmur. Those thoughtful eyes flit back and forth quickly as they scan the note.
“I am unsure,” Miri returns, “Could you read it to me?”
“Of course, my love.”
Gale obliges, shifting the tome from his lap to the side table. Then he stands and accepts the note, clearing his throat softly.
“Hmm. 'Miri', it starts. 'I don't know much about you...'”
He reads the note aloud, in his rich, soothing voice. Miri sits on the arm of the chair as she listens, watching Gale move about the room and gesticulate as he orates. Brown eyes flit up to Miri on occasion to ensure she’s not missed any words. Her Common has come a long way, to his great pride, but there were still hiccups every now and then.
As he works through the note, a look of growing intrigue falls over the wizard’s features. He turns to her with a curious hum once he finishes the letter, eyebrows drawing up.
“It seems a stranger has written a letter of appreciation. About you and me, no less. And, rightfully, how I am lucky to have you,” he muses, lips curling up into a warm smile once more.
Miri looks back to him with a soft, but quizzical smile, her lips twisting slightly.
"What would possess someone to do that?" She wonders. "Why would they want to meet me?"
“Perhaps they’re an admirer of us both?” Gale theorizes, sounding a bit amused by the idea. He glances down at the letter, as if reading it again might provide further insight.
“Or…” Gale’s gaze refocuses, finding Miri’s bright eyes again. His expression softens. “Perhaps they’re hoping to get to know the person who has captured my heart.”
He steps closer, lifting his free hand to gently brush his knuckles over Miri’s freckled cheek. Miri leans into the contact. Her gaze softens as it meets his, though her brows remain furrowed with her lingering suspicion.
Gale’s hand slides back to thread into her hair, his fingers brushing against her neck. He gives the woven coils a soft tug - a silent request to come closer. Miri stands, winding her arms around his waist. Her hold is protective and possessive as she gazes up at him with a somewhat serious expression and blazing bright eyes.
“I can tell you’re troubled,” Gale speaks softly, as his eyes search her face. “You’ve got your ‘suspicious face’ on. What are you thinking?”
"I am unfamiliar with these customs," she murmurs softly. She takes a step closer, pressing tighter into his embrace. "I cannot help but be wary of a stranger's attention."
Gale wraps his arms loosely around her, pulling her close against his chest. His warmth, his scent surrounding her - a comfort. He can’t resist leaning in to plant a kiss against her forehead, his eyes falling shut as he breathes her in.
“I don’t blame you in the least, my love. With the way people have treated you, you’re right to be wary,” he assures her in a gentle murmur. Gale pulls her closer still, until his chin rests atop her head. “And I wouldn’t want anything to make you feel unsafe. You want me to toss the letter in the fire?”
Miri shakes her head. A small, endeared smile tugs at Gale’s lips. His hands smooth languid circles against her back.
“I understand.” He leans back to meet her gaze, his eyes full of patient warmth and deep affection. “I’m admittedly not particularly enthusiastic about strangers having an interest in us either. But I can’t help but want to know who they are. Don’t you?” Miri's hands tighten against him slightly and she huffs a sharp breath.
"They claim to be a dear friend of yours," she returns, still suspect. "I have contacts in Cloakwood... Perhaps I will send a message."
Gale huffs a soft, quiet laugh through his nose. He can’t help but love her protective instincts.
“Ah, my fierce protector, always with one paw between me and danger.” He gently pinches her chin between forefinger and thumb, tilting it up with a warm smile on his lips. “You’re adorable.”
Miri snorts a soft laugh, giving him a wry, chastising look.
"Be serious," she chides, though she can't suppress her half smile.
He feigns a pout, though his eyes gleam with a familiar mischief.
“I am serious,” he protests, gently pulling them closer together until not even a hint of space remains between them. “You are adorable. And I love you. It’s very serious.”
He leans in to press a light kiss to her forehead and against her cheek. Another, against her jaw. And lower, against her throat. His voice is a breath against her skin.
“Truly, I’m deathly serious…”
Miri looses a peal of giggles before she’s lost in his embrace for the next few hours. But in the morning, she sends Corvus off with a letter (in Elvish) to a friend in Cloakwood - another ranger faithful to Mielikki.
#ahhhh a letter for Miri!!! 🤩#not sure what you were looking for anon so I just had some fun#I would write a letter back#but Miri is illiterate lol#oc: miri#gale dekarios#gale of waterdeep#galemance#my writing#primalweave

✍️❌
Fun fact about me: I’m an aspiring novelist taking short story writing classes and am currently adapting the concept of one of my Sonic aus into an original tale. in that one shadow’s character arc is inspired by Neon!
OH MY GOODNESS THAT'S SO COOOL!!! :D That makes me so happy to hear! Also, I totally get taking a Sonic AU and turning into an original story. I've done that before! XD
✍️ - Favorite scene to write?
Probably Nine's dream in Chapter 5! It wasn't in my plan and I was going to go from Render's scene straight into Nine waking up in the cell. But as I started writing, I realized I could fit some angst in as a dream super quick and started writing. I very quickly got carried away, and ended up laying out the blueprint for Nine's overall character arc by accident! Overall, it was a massively fun scene to write, specifically because of all the symbolism in there!
❌️ - Share a deleted scene
This is an early version of the scene in Chapter 8 where Nine was removing Momentum's earring and unlocking his collar! It was before I had Momentum's character arc fully mapped out, so I made the dumb decision to have NIne just. Straight up take the collar off for Momentum here. My idea was that Momentum just wouldn't actually use his powers until the finale, despite having them unblocked for several chapters before the. That's ultimately why this scene got rewritten. It's way more impactful to have Momentum be the one who makes the decision to remove the collar all by himself!
(scene under the cut)
Nine had no idea what the collar around Momentum’s neck was for, but the longer it was allowed to remain, the more it bothered him. Finally, in the middle of Momentum’s second week of freedom, Nine decided to ask him about it.
They were in the workshop. Nine was tinkering with a new gadget and Momentum was sitting on the bench, staring down at the ground. Finally, Nine looked up from his project and turned to face Momentum.
“Hey, Momentum,” Nine called.
Momentum looked up until his gaze found Nine’s shoes.
Nine pointed the screwdriver he was holding at the collar. “You want me to get that off for you?”
Momentum hesitated, his expression one of surprise and disbelief. Finally, he nodded, ducking his head.
Nine walked over to the bench and sat at Momentum’s side. “Where does it come off?”
In response, Momentum reached up and pulled his quills to the side, revealing a latch at the back of the collar. Nine didn’t see any screws or any other obvious ways to take it off, but that wasn’t going to stop him. Using the flathead attachment of the screwdriver, Nine attempted to force the two sides of the latch apart. Nothing.
Nine sighed. “It must be an electronic lock. Is that right?”
Momentum nodded again.
“Looks I’ll have to do this the hard way then.” Nine grabbed his tablet from his work table and came back, ready to start hacking. It took forever to find the collar’s signal, and even longer to hack through all its security. There were so many layers, and they were all so thick! This level of coding was almost on par with the Chaos Council.
A good hour and a half later, Nine finally managed to get through and found the command to unlock the collar. “There!” Nine declared triumphantly.
There was a click as the collar’s latch came off. Momentum froze, hand hovering just in front of the collar. Nine leaned over, electing to take it off for him. The moment the device was removed, Momentum let out a small gasp. His eyes went wide and it almost looked like he was about to cry.
“Momentum?” Nine asked, honestly a bit confused.
Momentum turned towards Nine and lowered his head so far down he was practically bowing. His breath came in quick gasps. He was definitely crying now. Nine could only look on, not sure how to react. Did getting this collar off really mean that much to Momentum?
“Um . . . You’re welcome?” Nine tried.
Momentum straightened and turned away, hiding his face from Nine’s view. He nodded stiffly.
Nine eyed the collar with a hard expression. “This was the last remnant of your captivity. I’ll destroy it for you. You’re free now, Momentum. Completely free.”
Momentum said nothing. He only hunched his shoulders and hugged his arms.
That night, after Momentum had gone to bed, Nine pulled the collar out from where he’d hidden it. Nine did intend to destroy this thing, but he wanted to look at it first. Something didn’t seem right.
It clearly wasn’t an electric shock collar. If it was, it would’ve gone off as a security feature when Nine was initially trying to pry the latch open. No. This thing did something else. The question was what?
Nine sifted through the collar’s code and took it apart to examine its inner workings. He was left with a whole lot of nothing at first. Whoever had made it was good. Too good. Finally, Nine stumbled upon something. The collar appeared to be designed to emit some kind of signal, and that signal was supposed to block something.
So . . . the collar prevented Momentum from doing something? Like what? It couldn’t have been his speed. Nine had seen Momentum running just as fast as Sonic in order to generate power for the Chaos Council. So what then?
What had the collar been stopping Momentum from doing?

Welcome to Legacies!
Legacies is a dice-powered, semi-casual WCRP inspired by the Better Bones AU for players age 18 and up that focuses on player-driven plot, worldbuilding, and collaborative in-universe cultural development. Loosely set in a valley in the Scottish highlands, this RP centers around StormClan, born out of a union of expatriates from all five lake Clans, and the cats and factions they encounter in their new northern home. If you want to know more about the RP, you're in the right spot!
Choose a legacy! All characters enter RP with at least one connection (familial, ideological, or otherwise) to a notorious cat from the established history of the Tallrock territories, setting them up for built-in connections with other characters and special roles in story events.
Semi-literate expectations with an emphasis on the semi - 3 sentences minimum, 2 messages maximum; Legacies values quality over quantity.
Simple monthly activity checks with no minimum RP requirement and a forgiving hiatus system - with provisions for absence accommodations for both active and absent players.
Open auditioning system for limited ranks; submit any active character to the pool of future rank candidates at any time.
(Mostly) Optional lightweight rolling system derived from Powered by the Apocalypse and White Wolf's Storyteller system - no stats, no exp tracking, just roll to your goals and look out for surprises!
A flexible approach to worldbuilding that allows for alternative tangible faiths and lasting changes to the setting through player plot - faction changes, supernatural events, new legacies, and more!
An approach to Clan culture and the supernatural derived from the fanworks of bonefall, including (but not limited to) gods, tool use, cooking, differing rank structures and meanings, and an adjusted look at the history and impact of the warrior code.
A nuanced and mature RP environment; Legacies does not and will not shy away from the heavier topics discussed and referenced in the source material, but maintains a higher standard for critical thinking skills and compassionate writing.
Multiple factions in an evolving world - we begin with StormClan, contending with their recently-returned mysterious weaponsmithing neighbors, the Fallen, in the wake of an arson incident that grew wildly out of control.
Legacies is currently still under construction, but accepting pregame questions on this blog! You can also follow for lore, trivia, and artwork about the RP, as well as for plot and event updates once RP has started.
This blog is run by @mumbleberry , server owner and RP creator.

I've been looking for more sources on historical homosexuality, so we're going to China first for context on Meijiu and Wang. very informal post that will get an in-depth follow-up when I read more sources about the era the story is set in
The homosexual tradition in China was largely censored as antiquated by the Self-Strengthening Movement, when homophobia was imported to China along with Western science and philosophy.
this was 1861–1895 so a generation before Wang
hey take this book (Obsession: Male Same-Sex Relations in China, 1900-1950) a quote from it:
From the 1920s to the 1930s, a group of writers in China’s major urban areas linked the issue of same-sex relations to the question of national survival. Their venues were major tabloid newspapers such as Crystal (Jingbao, 晶报) in Shanghai. In their writings, discussion of same-sex relations, whether between wayward women, male politicians and their male favorites, Chinese and foreign men, or in the form of male prostitution, became the means through which they expressed their anxieties over the well-being of the nation.
now back to me scrolling this wiki page
Ming dynasty China banned homosexual sodomy (anal sex) in the Ming Code since the Jiajing emperor's reign and continued into the Qing dynasty until 1907, when western influence led to the law being repealed. The Chinese mocked and insulted Puyi and the Japanese as homosexuals and presented it as proof of their perversion and being uncivilized.
now I'll go way back, since the gds are in part styled in an ancient historical way, to some of these homosexual traditions, starting with the Zhou dynasty and jumping around a lot to add into the social context of these characters now
I'll have to look through the sources on the western influence here since elsewhere in this article and when we get to Japan later, western influences are associated with more homophobia
The aristocratic poet Yu Xin (513-581) was representative of the more subtle system of patronage which existed without the stigma of prostitution, whereby a poorer or younger man could provide sexual service to a more established man in return for political advancement. Yu Xin opened his home and provided a standing reference for the younger Wang Shao, who repaid him by serving as a sort of butler and sex provider. Wang Shao went on to become an official censor.
sounds familiar
After the Song dynasty, homosexual behavior was most documented amongst the gentry and merchant classes, since these were the people who were doing most of the writing. Practically all officials of this class maintained a wife or wives to produce heirs, and used their economic advantage to engage in relationships, heterosexual and homosexual, which gave them unequal power. Thus documentation focuses on male courtesans or "singing boys" in luxurious but decadent surroundings who must take on a female role to please wealthy patrons intent on maintaining their role as the masculine partner in the agreement.
(we'll also see this in Japan later)
Although the province of Fujian was not alone in open homosexuality in the 17th century, it was the site of a unique system of male marriages, attested to by the scholar-bureaucrat Shen Defu and the writer Li Yu, and mythologized by in the folk tale, The Leveret Spirit. The older man in the union would play the masculine role as a qixiong or "adoptive older brother", paying a "bride price" to the family of the younger man- it was said virgins fetched higher prices- who became the qidi, or "adoptive younger brother". Li Yu described the ceremony, "They do not skip the three cups of tea or the six wedding rituals- it is just like a proper marriage with a formal wedding." The qidi then moved into the household of the qixiong, where he would be completely dependent on him, be treated as a son-in-law by the qixiongs parents, and possibly even help raise children adopted by the qixiong. These marriages could last as long as 20 years before both men were expected to marry women in order to procreate.
note how the relations are framed. the eventual expectations to marry women is also seen in the interaction between Wang and Richard you know the one. this in part (though the proposal comes later in the story) is why imo Meijiu's mysterious relatives in China may actually be Wang's family
A more individual example of a marriage-like relationship between men was that formed by the scholar-bureaucrat Bi Yuan 畢沅 (1730–1797) and the Suzhou actor Li Guiguan. The two men exchanged vows of fidelity, and Li Guiguan retired from the stage to be addressed by acquaintances as Bi's wife. Unlike the Fujian marriages, this was a unique relationship in its locality, so much so that it was still remembered 200 years later, when it inspired the novel Precious Mirror of Ranking Flowers by Chen Sen.
By 1655, Qing courts began to use the term jījiān (雞姦) for homosexual anal intercourse. Society began to emphasise strict obedience to the social order, which referred to a relationship between husband and wife. In 1740, an anti-homosexual decree was promulgated, defining voluntarily homosexual intercourse between adults as illegal. Though there were no records on the effectiveness of this decree, it was the first time homosexuality had been subject to legal proscription in China. The punishment, which included a month in prison and 100 heavy blows with heavy bamboo, was actually the lightest punishment which existed in the Qing legal system.
In 1912, the Xinhai Revolution toppled the Qing dynasty and its explicit prohibition of ji jian was abolished by the succeeding states.
and we're back in the 20th century...
I will be reading the book I linked so this here is just the idea of a post but I hope it's interesting
#this has quotes and all (nothing but quotes really) but don't expect much in depth yet#rgd posting#auau original

An illager crowned by old jewel of a royal guard uniform from a fallen empire, sat at their desk, stained exp on the floor, and heavy footsteps echoes behind their door. A flood of guard pushed the door open, shocking the crowned illager in disgust.
======
The light shined through the open gates, to the crown illager, and two evokers behind him.
“I am not a humble corrupt, but i am quite frankly overworked and young.”
The normal un-gemmed fitted illager waved their hand. The armoured guards beside the evoker with an unkempt brow, robed in black and gold with black entrails of potion effects in their golden trim, with their glasses in their pocket broken.
Crowned illager looked glanced back at their evoker on their right. Evoker priestess looked down, with all the self-awareness of their sins. The dullend clothing that comparatively had a bigger gold trim didn't shine as nicely.
“Tch” The crowned illager stared at the lower class guard worker, peeking at the modest maid walking outside the gates, “You have no loyalty, or any respectable understanding of why I controlled this region.”
The worker glanced down at them, their eyes bothered by the sun. Being disturbed in their conversation in the mother tongue, far from the illagerish the once ruler of the land knew.
"My loyalty’s is towards nature, she is a ruthless controller. This is only natural, for fear of you taking away my children, this is for their survival."
They walked out the gate, a cobblestone stage of execution. How wonderful!

A basket, dried, used and worn. It had a rag, smelling similarly to some soap with leaves and lemon skin.
Their fresh dried leaves, and there's dust of withered leaves from falls 3 months ago.

And with that, the neck hanging over the guillotine dripped out exp into the basket.
The confetti from the witches was the only loudest ones there all the way in the hills, quite far but as visible as the moon. You could still be able to hear a thump of the head go into the basket.
Watery red blood stained the ragged, and dropped head. The heads whittend eyes, seeping to go back in their head. The vocals chopped off of the pittering quietness of and the breezes overshadowed with the quiet and peaceful crowd attachment to the over-excitement of a dead king.

HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HELLO HELLO HELLO HELLO (hello)
welcome to screen shot saturday video gamers
it's ya girl
callie
let's get right into the updates!
except...
i. i had a VERY busy week. school has been metaphorically beating my metaphorical ass metaphorically
so i uh.
don't really have a lot to show this week.
so what do we do??? do we cancel screenie saturday???
NO
you FOOL
THE SHOW MUST GO ON
and i have an idea for how it could!
remember these equations?
these are the equations for the amount of hp an enemy spawns in with and the amount of exp an enemy gives upon defeat respectively
the first and third from the top are the originals, while the second and fourth are simplified versions.
this may seem complicated! that's probably because it is.
you know i'm not constantly doing the same equations by hand. that would be fucking terrible. so how do i do all this?
INTRODUCING....
THIS PYTHON CODE I WROTE LAST WEEK!
it's a bit complex, but it can all be explained in this four step process...
it'll ask for all the important variables. (min/max lvl an enemy can spawn with, min/max effort values, infection status, etc etc)
then, it'll run them through the equations, and output the result!
that's it!
no seriously. that's it.
also apparently i wrote an equation for how much damage an enemy can do, but it seems like i didn't write it down for whatever reason...?
thanks past callie you rock
i guess i'll spend the rest of my post talking about a bit of a concern of mine.
you may have noticed that when I'm writing, I write properly. but when i'm typing my tweets or gamedev updates, i kinda...don't.
that has made me feel a bit conscious, i may be implying that i'm not the one writing, or something like that.
let's clear things up with a little QnA with yours truly!:
Q: Why do you type properly when writing, but improperly when posting?
A: writing stuff out takes time! i usually feel like posting (ESPECIALLY tweeting) is like a spur-of-the-moment kinda deal. like it's a quick thought that i convert to words.
Q: But why the gamedev updates?
A: first of all, i feel like there's two types of brand (Disclaimer: Tomato Soup Group is not a legally defined brand.) accounts:
the ones who act all professional and proper
the ones who act silly to gain attention
while i can see the approach for both options, i'm not really a big fan of either one.
but you see, dear reader. i have been blessed with an aspect that i have not revealed to you yet.
when companies (Disclaimer: Tomato Soup Group is not a legally defined company.) try strategy number 2, they're trying to appeal to a specific audience.
y'know, "hEy!!!!!!!! we're cool too!!! we're just like you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! buy our product"
let's call this audience the "twitter freaks" cuz this mainly happens on twitter
i mean, i would know.
because I AM A TWITTER FREAK MYSELF.
THAT'S RIGHT. THAT'S FUCKING RIGHT
READ EM AND WEEP CHAT.
I GET A FREE PASS!
AND IT'S ALL BECAUSE (Disclaimer: Tomato Soup Group is not a legally defined brand, business, and/or company. For that reason, the main head of the group, Callie, is able to remain as a part of her own audience. This is literally just how she acts.)
Q: Do you use AI for any part of the project?
A: i use it to clean up spotty code occasionally.
it's always a last resort. like an "UGHHHHHHHHH IM SO TIRED BUT I GOTTA GET THIS WORKING BEFORE I GO TO BEDDDDDD" situation.
the code the ai generates is also seen as a "placeholder" of sorts, as most of that code must be rewritten for it to work perfectly.
tldr: i use it for quick patches to my spaghetti code, and that's about it.
Q: Do you use AI to write your work?
A: NO. i would never let my work be tainted by soulless hands.
Q: Do you have other writers?
A: nope! i will accept suggestions, but ultimately, all writing will be done by me and me only.
to clarify, i'm not against the idea of having other writers!! that's fine and valid.
but i feel like (and this may sound silly) i'm the only one who truly understands these characters.
although it may not seem like it right now, these characters have an EXTREME amount of depth to them.
so much so, that i feel like their story is worth sharing.
that's why i always sound so excited when updating!!!!! because it's actually how i feel for these characters.
i hope that one day in the future, i'll be able to show you the true magnitude of the depths.
Q: Why do all the characters have Japanese names?
A: oh, that's a simple one! a lot of the game is inspired by jpop, and the names are just kind of a reference to that.
i'm not intending to misappropriate a culture i am not a part of, i'm just a really big fan of jpop. i put it on whenever i do any work.
and then i do that neurodivergent thing where i imagine an animated music video involving my characters
like, for example:
i've been listening to お気に召すまま by Eve. (Also known by its English title: As You Like It) a lot lately.
i recommend you give this a listen:
youtube
from what i can tell, the song is about the complex emotions that the main character experiences when trying to confess to a girl. the hand man represents a part of him he doesn't like, the other versions of himself represent the other sides of his personality, etc. etc.
now THIS COULD BE WRONG. but if it's true, then i feel like this song would really resonate with rikiyo.
he would relate to how the main character's emotions seem to get in the way, because he's going through something similar.
he's scared to tell toshi he loves him for many reasons, one of which being his own emotions.
oops! hope i didn't give too much away there!
anyways thatll be it for tonight
sorry for the lack of progress, i'll try to get some done during this week!
love you all
-Callie

Merry Christmas From Melbourne House (Commodore 64) Developed/Published by: Melbourne House Released: 1984 Completed: 11/12/2023 Completion: Beat it with a score of 100 out of 100.
It’s 1984 and the Christmas cash-in market is finally mature, with five whole games released for home computers (at the very least.) Alphabetically first in my list (because Icon Software chose to go with “Xmas” on their merry release) Merry Christmas From Melbourne House is a slight cheat because it’s really just a tiny tech demo/bit of marketing, but it was sold, costing 95p (the price of tape duplication and postage?) for readers of Commodore User (it was actually in the December issue and the deadline was December 17th to get your money to them, which makes me wonder how many people played this long after things stopped being festive.)
It is though, honestly, what I was kind of expecting from A Christmas Adventure. It’s a short, very easy little adventure game that… passes about half an hour and actually manages to feel Christmassy.
Like A Christmas Adventure, you’re tasked with making sure Santa can get away from the north pole to deliver presents, but in a shocking twist… YOU are Santa. The game’s blurb claims he’s “attempting to stop an industrial dispute” that “is threatening the delivery of toys to children of the world” and it sounds like jolly old saint nick is a fat cat like the rest of ‘em, and out of solidarity with the elves and workers everywhere I spent quite a bit of time typing things like “GIVE ELVES RAISE” and “PROVIDE TIME OFF” but the parser never understood it, so I almost didn’t finish this.
The plot is a bit oversold anyway, considering the solution is pretty much “Get off your fat arse and pack your sack of toys yourself, Santa.”
As you’re not doing all that much, the parser is adequate, and the graphics are… genuinely quite evocative. They are important too–the toys you have to pack are all on one screen. I don’t generally like this design in graphic text adventures–where you don’t get told everything in text (I’m a VERBOSE man in Infocom games)–and having to work out directions here was not my favourite, But it worked well enough, and I was even charmed by the full screen advert for Melbourne House games.
Anyway, lemme see how much 95p is in today’s money. £3.77. I can’t really say people got their money’s worth here, but they could do a lot worse.
Will I ever play it again? I’m good.
Final Thought: Joe Pranevich over at The Adventurer’s Guild played through this as well if you’d like to read something more in-depth about it, with the bonus that one of the developers, Dave Johnston, shows up in the comments, revealing that it was developed “in a matter on weeks using an in-house text engine and a tweaked sprite engine based on Way of the Exploding Fist code” and that he didn’t even have a copy. They paid people at Melbourne House so poorly that they couldn’t raise 95p???
Support Every Game I’ve Finished on ko-fi! You can pick up a digital copy of exp. 2600, a zine featuring all-exclusive writing at my shop, or join as a supporter at just $1 a month and get articles like this a week early.

It's pretty striking just how powerful abstraction and programming can be. In my fourth year, I struggled with a final project where I spent days deriving the transfer functions for a 3 state variable, 5 force variable system. No individual part of the derivation was difficult, but it was long and tedious, and it's very easy to make some trivial error in 8 pages of hand written math that fucks everything up.
Now that I'm TAing the same class, and helping students with the same project, I can bring to bear my better understanding of matlab, and greater experience working with linear systems of differential equations, and I realized the code to solve this problem programatically looks something like this:
syms Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q state = [Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q]; steadyState = [2.5 1.5 325 4 0 300 350 50]; dState = [ Q*(Ca0 - Ca) - 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca; Q*(Cb0 - Cb) + 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 3*exp(1/Tr)*Cb; Q*(Tr0 - Tr) - 12*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 15*exp(1/Tr)*Ca + Tj - Tr; ]; JdState = double(subs(jacobian(dState, state), state, steadyState)); A = JdState(:,1:3); B = JdState(:,4:end); s = tf('s'); G = (eye(3)*s - A)\B
That's it, a dozen lines of code. With a few tweaks, I could generalize this by parameterizing values that are currently just magic constants. With a few more tweaks I could generalize this to solve almost any system, all the user would need to do is provide the dState matrix and identify which variables are force variables and which variables are state variables.
It took me longer to write out this post than it did for me to solve that system, while it took me 3 days and an entire notebook of derivations to do it 7 years ago.

Make A EXP + Level Up System Code Write Up - Part 2.
This blog post covers the second batch of code for my Level Up + EXP system. However, there’s an error preventing it from functioning properly, which I need to fix before moving forward with further development.
This code is designed to test the Level Up + EXP system before integrating it into battle mechanics. Currently, it's not functioning properly, but I’m working on identifying and fixing the issue to get it working.
In my new game instance, I created a function to add EXP, update the current EXP, and then trigger the level-up function along with updating the progress bar to reflect the new experience.
This is the code for the level up system.
I needed to sequence it for whatever circumstances.
Sequence 1: If current EXP equals required EXP, reset current EXP to 0, increase the level, and set a higher required EXP for the next level to make progression more challenging for the player.
Sequence 2: Check if the current level exceeds the required EXP. If true, subtract current EXP from required EXP, add the level, and update the required EXP for the next level to a higher value.
