Something I really like is that April’s constant stream of odd jobs she goes through is somewhat reflected in the boys as well. Like, you have April working at random pizza places or getting a crane license or being fully willing to apply for a job at a place clearly made out of cardboard. Then you have the boys as well who do anything from working as a basketball mascot, building a massive dog park, being waiters, getting a whole band gig at a theme park, etc, etc-

Main difference is that April actively applies for these jobs (and is hopefully paid for the short time she’s in them) whereas for the bros the jobs usually find them (and they practically never get paid.) It doesn’t even stop at jobs either, they just seem to casually amass skills in general.

I don’t know, I like how both April and the turtles are just so ready and willing to do things. Sure, they’re not always good at these things, but they do them readily! In a way, being heroes is just another job (well, more like volunteer work/vigilantism/another fun activity) that they initially took on because of their general sense of “why not?”

They’re very willing and open to trying out new things despite their tendency to revert back to what they enjoy (and how commonly trying new things ends up going wrong), and I think that adaptational interest of theirs really helps them be well rounded in multiple regards.

Just saw a post that was like "stop hating on people's ships!" and specifically mentioned Katniss/Gale from The Hunger Games. And like, obviously, don't be a dick to people, let them like what they like, buuuuuuut it turns out I have a lot of feels about this

When I first read the books, I thought of Gale as a perfectly acceptable option. I was dating a Gale! I had friends married to Gales!

But a lot of time has passed. And I, thankfully, gtfo of my relationship with a Gale. My friends are happily divorced from their Gales.

Gale is........not a great partner. I understand the appeal! I understand the "oh if only things were just slightly different, he/they would be perfect". Yeah, he's a traumatized teenager in a shitty shitty world I get it. If only the world was kinder. If only her father hadn't died. If only she had never gone to the games. If only.

But having grown up in a conservative religion that encourages women to stay and work and hope and strive and even keep themselves in check waiting for that change in a man, I have to say that is a really really really fucking harmful mindset. When I reread THG soonish after leaving my shitty partner and was hypersensitive to red flags, Gale was full of them. A ton of his traits are in this grey area where you can read them multiple ways: uncompromising (oh, he sticks to his guns!) - possessive (aw he cares so much!) - manipulative (no, no, he just has the worst timing when it comes to confessing his feelings, is all). Reading how Gale treated Katniss was like reading how my partner treated me early on, before it got worse.

Ship it all you want. But I beg you, want better for yourself.

Got an itch to play Sunless Sea again and it's always such an odd experience because. Like.

I know this game. Any other game, the level if knowledge and research I have put into this would make me a confident fucking master. And yet.

I can be reading text I've read dozens of times before and i still feel...not clueless, but absolutely off the mark. It all feels so familiar and yet I've never seen a victory condition. I've at least started pretty much every storyline but I'll still see something new each time I sink some time into it. I have a fucking JOURNAL of TRADE ROUTES and REQUIRED ITEMS and somehow that's only mildly helpful

That and the fact Fallen London's lore is so fucking batshit and honestly kind of hard to research (thr wiki's are frustratingly structured for me and the browser game is just. A bit inaccessible for me) means I can have a pretty solid understanding of what's going on in each port and what each faction is about and still ZERO FUCKING GRASP ON LITERALLY ANY PLOT

This post bugs the shit out of me because it completely divorces the author from the culture of the time she was writing in and ignores the fact that having nonvillainous gay characters in her work at all was actually insanely progressive, and not allowing fanfic or art was just. How it was. She was no where near anne rice levels of protective, and in fact her fan forums in the early 2000s did allow fanfic to be posted as long as the characters were all ocs.

Like, circling back to the gay and trans rep, she was writing in the 60s-90s, when being openly gay got you openly beaten to death in most parts of the us, reagan let the aids crisis go unchecked because of the perception it was only affecting gay people, being gay got you dishonorable discharge from the military, queer people had no civil protections from retaliation if their orientation was discovered, and anne McCaffrey was making gay dragon riders be the protectors of her fictional planet. Like. That's not homophobic especially for the times. She wouldnt be considered progressive by TODAYS standards, sure, but most of the pern books came out 40 years ago when dont ask dont tell was progressive policy.

And for a straight woman in her 50s writing background gay characters she was being pretty damn progressive for her time

I’m back on my Tim Drake doesn’t have a Bristol accent agenda! He only lived in Bristol for max 2 years and that’s including the time he lived with Bruce. Until 14 he spent his time moving between various houses across Gotham City and in various boarding schools in Gotham. (No I don’t know why Gotham has multiple boarding schools or why Tim went to multiple boarding schools). He lived with Bruce in Wayne manor at 14, but by 14/15 his dad woke up from the coma and they bought drake manor. Living in drake manor for, maybe a year and a half, before at 16 they have to sell the manor, and they move to a brownstone in Gotham city proper again. Then when Jack dies, sometime very soon after that he barely has time to live in Bristol again before the Red Robin happens where he is (probably freshly) 17. Your accent is pretty well developed when you reach 14, and none of the boarding schools are in Bristol, or implied to have alot of students from them. Even then he only spends his school time there, the rest of the time he spends all across Gotham. That is to say his accent is probably a non-dialectical version of a Gotham accent. Something ambiguously middle class but could just as easily be upper middle class or working class. He probably favours the accent of a certain area in Gotham but he also probably mixes slang and specific dialectical features. This is all to say anyone realistic wouldn’t be able to differentiate his accent from a crime ally accent, and Gotham natives wouldn’t be able to place where exactly in Gotham he’s from other than to say where he isn’t from. He probably just sounds like he’s from a New Jersey that locked itself culturally off from even the rest of New Jersey and spawned a new weirder New Jersey accent.
