Was anyone going to tell me the new Sultai are incredibly based?

#planeswalker’s guide to tarkir dragonstorm#Sultai#tarkir dragonstorm#mtg#magic the gathering#honestly I love what they’ve done with every clan though#the mardu clash of sky and ember is epic and makes total sense in an environment full of storms and wimd#also it’s nice to see their technological abilities emphasized and how they can actually contribute to global trade#instead of just raiding everyone all the time#the abzan seem pretty similar to their pre-dtk incarnation which makes sense for a clan so focused on tradition#I’m glad they stopped kidnapping orphans though#the jeskai also seem pretty similar in terms of overall societal structure and ideals#I can’t say much about the temur. this planeswalker’s guide certainly goes into a lot more detail on their actual traditions#and survival strategies than the old ktk planeswalker’s guide which is nice#the sultai change is probably the most dramatic and the most deserved though.#I mean there’s definitely a place for ruthlessly exploitative civilizations but against the backdrop of liberation from the dragonlords#it’s nice to see the sultai becoming a much fairer and more prosperous society

Ahhh the Human Domestication Guide might be taking over my life >w<
I read the original and then started reading Dog of War yesterday and spent nearly the whole day readingg :3 Honestly it's so good and sweet and has just a liiiitle~ bit of tension to keep things fresh.
God it's such a dream of a setting I can't wait to sink my teeth into it and maybe write a little something or other!
#like I'm aware that it's just the combination#of a setting that addresses our generation's deepest fears about capitalism and the environment#as well as our personal fears about being loved and accepted#and our age group's fear of being inadequate to make decisions for ourselves#or to not be able to truly discover ourselves or provide a happy life for ourselves (this feeds back into fears about capitalism)#like i know this is just a set of very convenient and effective themes and plot points#but that didn't stop me from reading 14 long chapters yesterday and it's not gonna stop me today dammit!#hdg#human domestication guide#fanfic

Apparently I am deeply detached from widespread public opinion on Mount Everest bc at work I read a blurb for a memoir where some woman was like " I needed to prove something to everyone, so I decided to be the first woman to climb Mt. Everest without oxygen" like all you are proving to me is that you're a twat
#I'm gonna make the climb even MORE dangerous so my local guides forced to let tourists trample their sacred mountain#bc they need the funds in their economy#are more likely to have to drag my insensate body back down endangering themselves in the process#can't you volunteer at a soup kitchen or something#what IS it about annoying people desperate to go die in inhospitable environments#some moth to a flame shit happening here

i know some people are absolutely incensed that Arcane dropped the ball on the classism and discrimination and poverty and all those plotlines they had introduced but the truth of the matter is that Arcane always framed any type of Zaunite insurrection/revolution against Piltover in bad lighting and claimed that any fight/war for the freedom and wellbeing of future generations is ultimately evil because it gets people living right now killed
Vander is the most sympathetic Undercity leader/hot shot only because he is supporting Piltover's superiority and oppression of the Undercity. he has a deal with the cops to ensure that he will keep his people obedient and subservient to Piltover and the cops. he aids the status quo and thus Piltover's exploitation of Zaun; he never encourages pushing for change in any manner, violent or non-violent, instead always pressuring those around him (esp Vi) to just take Piltover's scraps and mistreatment because you wouldnt want to lose your loved ones, would you? (which is just like, a threat. an actual threat that figures of authority like cops make to their victims to keep them inline) Completely ignoring the fact that people in Zaun HAVE, ARE, and WILL BE losing loved ones to police brutality, disease, toxic/radioactive exposure, famine, poverty, gang violence, etc. BECAUSE OF PILTOVER.
Arcane is/(started out as) a great show but it was always most sympathetic towards Piltover and the status quo. it never pushed for Zaun's independence/freedom in any meaningful way--and whenever it did deal with Zaun potentially becoming its own nation? it didn't show the power of revolutions, of class actions, of uniting and protesting and fighting back--it just said that if you sit your ass down tight and let the oppressive government shit on you enough, you might eventually be granted some rights--unless you fuck it up with a rocket, of course. but that's not how real life has ever worked
not only that but any attempt at fighting back is literally shown as being plain violence for violence's sake. we dont see or hear anything about how silco or vander planned on rebuilding the Undercity/Zaun, how they wanted to expand infrastructure, how they would support the people and keep them safe--Arcane doesnt paint revolutions as the complex operations they are, they just show us the violence of them and nothing else. like really, all Silco wants to do is use Shimmer to scare topside--but that's not how revolutions or fighting against opressors works! because Piltover will be scared, yes, but that just means they will double down harder on all the violence and restrictions. that's obvious. not only that, but lets say Piltover gets scared and retracts from Zaun completely--Zaun seems to be heavily dependent on trade from Piltover to get what they need to survive. Silco doesnt mention anything about how to fix that. and that to me just plays on harmful stereotypes about any and all kinds of social movements. all of the real work is reduced to violence.
i dont have a closing statement im just so pissed at how theyre handling the classism in s1 now that im rewatching it
#arcane#league of legends#arcane netflix#arcane lol#arcane show#arcane league of legends#like let us be fucking for real. i just started rewatching the show and all of the scenes with vander guiding vi are pissing me off so bad#esp in light of season 2. because i was mad!! i thought they fucked it up!! and they did!#but the fact of the matter is that arcane was never trying to say anything about classism. classism was just there#they propped up vander as THE RIGHT kind of zaunite and what was he??? complicit in and an assistant of Piltover's oppression of Zaun#according to arcane the more you strive for zaunite independence the more evil you are#you should be like vander instead and work nicely with cops! or be like vi and either become one or fuck one or both#who gives a shit that cait and vi could be gassing infants and killing terminally ill zaunites in their pursuit of jinx#who cares about the implications of using a gas that can and will spread even when used in controlled environments!!!!#theres no way a fucking gas could potentially affect anyone besides its intended targets!! no way for sure!!#even if the environment is open and accessible to the public and could leave behind residue!#if the zaunite is not supporting piltover then theyre not a person#thats why zaun only gets any positive recognition when theyre either helping piltover#like coming in to fight against noxus or ekko and his firelights sabotaging silco#ekko is the only zaunite allowed to be outright pissed at cait becuase hes quick to calm down#and also dont get me started on cait going 'this is all a misunderstanding' girl they KNOW how bad it is down there and they DONT CARE#THEY BENEFIT FROM THIS IT DOESNT MATTER HOW SHIT EVERYONE IS DOING AS LONG AS THEY BRING IN PROFIT

slowly I'm recovering the beauty of discovery
(creature by half•alive)
(textless + timelapse below cut)
#yellowart#subnautica#i feel like the timelapse is kinda long but also this did take a long time to make#anyways. let me yap about the meanings of all the panels <3#'i am creation' -> the ocean being the source of life and where shit evolved from also a good way to sort of 'set the scene' for subnautica#'both haunted' -> GHOST leviathan; in the BONE fields#'and holy' -> this one was a bit trickier. debated about using the emperor but i knew i wanted to use her elsewhere#also debated hoverfish because its cute and well liked so i thought that would be funny for 'and holy'#also something something jesus walking on water also makes it fitting. in the end though i decided on a peeper with the enzyme trail#and i *tried* to make it loop over its head like a halo but idk how well that imagery came through. still mentioned it in the alt text tho.#'made in glory' -> was REALLY torn about this one. on the one hand i wanted to have like a picture of the code because something something#divine machine and it being made out of code making it inherently holy or something; but i wasnt sure if that would be too#'immersion breaking' since most of the stuff in this is like in game stuff i wasnt sure if acknowledging that it was a game would be#too much. my other idea was to draw a couple of creature eggs like a stalker egg and a spadefish egg or something; but in the end i just#went with the one that i personally thought was cooler so if you think it does feel out of place uhhhh sorry i guess lmao.#also yes that is code from the game. idk shit about programming i just think code shit is cool so i poked though a modding tutorial til i#found what it is they use to look at that shit and started poking around. its pretty cool tbh. anyways the specific part i chose for the#drawing was something under the peepers; i think its the bit that tells the enzyme peepers to do the enzyme stuff like the trail obviously#but also some other stuff. not 100% sure though like i said idk shit about this sort of thing but everything in there seems pretty well#labeled its kinda impressive. and very helpful for navigating even if you dont know shit lol.#anyways. 'even the depths of the night cannot blind me' -> blood kelp trench is i think one of the darkest biomes in the game#possibly THE darkest so i thought it would be fitting. probably my least favorite panel though i dont think i did a very good job#representing the area or representing the bloodvines :/#'when you guide me' -> sea emperor but more specifically her messages to the player telling you to 'come here'#'creature only' -> not sure how well i can articulate this but basically the idea of humans beig animals with animal needs to eat and drink#and the idea of being a part of the ecosystem. modern life tends to make us forget that sort of thing but id imagine for ryley being on the#planet would violently remind him of this with things trying to eat him while he has to try to eat things as well. being part of the food#web. 'creature only' because he is only a creature not non-essential systems maintenance chief; but a creature living in an environment and#trying to survive. or something like that. does that make any fucking sense to anyone besides me? whatever.#anyways yapping over 👍

The following are suggestions for direct action organizing. These are meant as guidelines—feel free to improvise process as necessary.
Direct action utilizes hands-on intervention to directly challenge hierarchies. By using spectacle to expose hypocrisies, direct action terrorizes the status quo and revitalizes public space. In the process, it builds a delicious and defiant culture of resistance. Direct action encourages people to push the boundaries of acceptable behavior in order to create new possibilities for organizing, self-determination and activism.
Why non-hierarchical organizing?
In this country we are encouraged to think that voting is a participatory act of “democratic” choice, when in reality it means that a majority controls the agenda. Non-hierarchical organizing means that everyone participates in the process. Though there may be other models for non-hierarchical organizing, we have found consensus to be the most effective.
Consensus Process
Consensus means everyone comes to agreement before any decision can be made. In order for meetings to run as smoothly as possible, at the beginning of each meeting, someone volunteers to facilitate. The facilitator compiles a list of agenda items at the start of the meeting, keeps track of who wants to speak, calls on speakers, makes sure speakers stay on topic and keeps the agenda moving. After a proposal for action and a discussion of this proposal, the facilitator calls for consensus when a decision seems imminent; this involves asking who is in favor, who objects and who abstains. If there are any objections, the group formulates alternate proposals until consensus can be reached. Some groups have a formal process for tallying abstentions in order to decide if a proposal should be revisited. In the case of GAY SHAME, we have found that consensus occurs remarkably easily, since we have worked through our common politics and we discuss issues extensively prior to calling for consensus. We only use the more formal consensus process in the case of extreme disagreement.
If someone believes that a decision close to consensus is contradictory to the goals of the action or group, that person can block consensus. In the case of GAY SHAME, this has only happened one time in our four-year history. Of course, consensus decisions may always be revisited in the future. Usually, though, it’s all flower power and SSRIs here at GAY SHAME.
There are many different effective models for creating consensus-- feel free to share your strategies with us.
Working It Out
If you know people who share common goals, politics and strategies then contact them to arrange a time/place to meet and brainstorm ideas for a call to plan an action. If you don’t know anyone else who shares your politics, skip to step 2.
Make a call to plan an action: including a purpose/target (for example, GAY SHAME’s all to challenge the rabid consumerist monster that is corporate pride).
Create regular, free, public, accessible, meeting time and space (for example, GAY SHAME started meeting in a café with a lot of empty meeting space, now we meet in the back room of a sympathetic bookstore). Assume that all meetings are being surveilled by law enforcement and concerned citizens and plan separate spaces for organizing covert aspects of actions.
Fundraising is No Fun
True, the world is run on money and that does not exclude your direct action, but it is important to figure out ways to avoid spending money in order to further your critique of capitalism. Many people have boring day jobs that give them access to many useful resources, such as: paint, paper, markers, copies, food, etc. Borrowing, stealing and sharing can build relationships that grant writing, silent auctions and walk-a-thons never can. As a last resort, if you must shell out money then try to figure out ways to best distribute the costs.
Should You Approach the Media?
The mainstream media will probably not be on your side, especially when you’re doing something that actually challenges the existing power structure that controls most media outlets. Always remember that the mainstream media consists of corporate hacks, vultures and ghouls all vying for a chance to exploit you into your grave. Therefore, it is important to discuss early on whether you want to approach the mainstream media at all, and if so, how to ensure that your message gets across, if at all possible. Also, discuss alternative media such as “progressive” newspapers, pirate or non-commercial radio, “public” television, indymedia or any other options that may or may not be better than the corporate crap. Of course, you can also make your own media (take this web site, for example).

Me writing what should have been at most a bullet point one-shot comedic romance adventure: “hee hee hoo I’ll knock this out in no time”
Me, four months later and 112k+ words in: “Hmm I think I need to look at the practical engineering reference guide again so we can really assess the recycler issue on this cistern in the compound because I don’t know that they could have it on the lower level if the mountain rock is going to have a level 9 on the Mohs hardness scale—”
#Cannot stress enough how very little any of this research actually gets put into the fic itself#I just need for any technical/sci-fi details I include to sound somewhat believable even if they’re only mentioned in passing#Most of these conflicts are based on their environment so it has to have some measure of truth at the center#It’s like how you can tell when a book centered around nature or agriculture has been written by somebody who didn’t actually grow up aroun#either of those things and obviously hasn’t done their research to the point their characters know what they’re talking about#Anyway yeah. The soldiers need to seem competent at fixing their equipment and improvising tools based on the vast amount of training#and education they were given#Which means I as the author need to understand the problem the complications AND THE SOLUTION well enough the characters sound#not just knowledgeable but natural and familiar with it when talking about it#Same goes for the pilot. I’m pulling out my old flight manuals and looking into advanced avionics just so I can consolidate#a simplified answer into two sentences she can use to explain her area of expertise to somebody who has no idea what kind of ship she flies#Anyway#Fic: Call Sign#The actual simple reason for doing this is that effective imagery and worldbuilding fills out the world and makes it richer as a result#And unfortunately that means I am doing several crash courses in about fifteen different sciences so that I know what I’m talking about#Fun fact I wanted to be a cargo pilot but the aviation program at my university was THE most expensive major they had#And I’m not good/fast enough at math to get through even the small aircraft piloting guide 😞#If I can’t have the adventures and experiences I want I can at least tell stories where they happen#The good news is I have had plenty of experience fixing things and improvising technical solutions based on what science and history I know#So many of these problems are just household and vehicle issues on a bigger scale

You know, I feel like the people who shit on writing that spends time describing the environment in service to a compulsive need to drive the plot along are the kinds who think the only purpose of a scenic hike is to make it to the vista.
#unsolicited thoughts and opinions on the internet#screaming into the ethernet#coming to you courtesy of the woman who will make you stop to appreciate an excellent piece of moss#Or a rotting trunk rich in the scent of dead wood and leaves and mushrooms#that malty sweet earthy scent#Sometimes I challenge myself to pinpoint the exact location of a bird I'm hearing#or challenge myself to listen/sniff out/look out for the nearest sign of water#Its fun even if it yields nothing#And now I have a better map of my environment so it isn't so intimidating#carry a field guide so you can identify the flowers and fancy plants and bugs and mushrooms#is this me being an elitist snob I'm not sure

Ep 279: The Third Man Syndrome Part 1
"Who is the third who walks always beside you? When I count, there are only you and I together But when I look ahead up the white road There is always another one walking beside you" -- The Waste Land by T. S. ELIOT
Description:
A strange occurrence often happens to people engaged in an adventurous activity or who fall victim to an unfortunate circumstance. They find themselves with a companion whose presence would typically be impossible. Usually, the person is at a critical moment in a life-or-death situation in an extreme and unusual environment. When they are weakened and dying from exposure, suffering privation of sustenance, lost and alone, when they are about to lose all hope and accept their demise, that’s when this otherworldly friend suddenly appears to render aid and encouragement, giving them a superhuman will or strength to survive. Psychologists label this a “sensed presence experience” but are at a loss for a simple explanation. These presences may be seen, heard, and sometimes even touched. They appear in dire situations to people from all walks of life. They may materialize as a known friend, a deceased relative, a religious figure, or an indeterminate benefactor. Still, whatever their form, there is no doubt to the one in danger that this being is real and there with them. Although this sensed presence appears most often to mountain climbers, sailors, divers, and polar explorers, it can also happen to astronauts, prisoners of war, and disaster survivors. One of the most intriguing aspects of the sensed presence experience is that the ethereal saviors aren’t just there to provide comforting words; they actually help with knowledgable advice or guidance or can even seemingly take over the actions of the afflicted – whatever is necessary to increase the odds of survival. Join us as we explore a phenomenon more common than you might think, a syndrome also known as the “Third Man.”
