I Was Terrified of Eye Surgery… Until I Did This One Thing

I used to think I’d wear glasses forever. Not because I loved them (honestly, I didn’t), but because the idea of anyone—especially a machine—coming near my eyes freaked me out. LASIK always sounded like something for the brave and the bold. I was neither.

But life has a way of nudging us when we least expect it. For me, it was during a spontaneous beach trip with friends. Between the wind, sand, and sweat, my glasses were sliding off every ten minutes. At one point, I took them off just to enjoy the breeze and realized I was missing half the view.

That night, I googled:

“Is LASIK really safe?”

And that was the beginning of a deep, deep research spiral.

What surprised me was how normal the whole thing actually is. According to the American Refractive Surgery Council, LASIK has a patient satisfaction rate of over 96%, which is one of the highest among elective surgeries. That stat alone made me pause.

Then I came across this detailed breakdown from the Mayo Clinic, which listed the risks, candidacy criteria, and what to expect. It wasn’t sugarcoated, and I appreciated that.

Turning Curiosity Into Action

I wasn’t ready to book anything, but I did visit a few local clinics’ websites—mostly to understand what the lasik eye surgery procedure actually involved.

Interestingly, they all said something similar: The procedure is quick, recovery is fast, and the results are often life-changing.

One thing I didn’t expect was how personalized the journey can be. Different clinics have different technologies, different care styles. I realized the “LASIK experience” isn’t just one fixed thing—it really depends on who you go with and how you approach it.

While I haven’t done the surgery yet, I feel way less afraid now. Reading up, asking questions, and learning from other people’s journeys has helped me shift from fear to informed curiosity.

And maybe that’s the biggest win so far—not just the thought of ditching glasses, but finally seeing this whole experience for what it is: a choice that deserves both excitement and thought.

I wanted to use this affirmation from @affirmationsassistant to bring up how one of my biggest insecurities stems from my leadership skills. Basically, with my soft spoken nature and my willingness to do whatever everyone else is happy with, I never really felt like I had any. After all, it always seemed easiest to do what's asked of me even if I didn't like it rather than pursue something that matters to me and risk ruining everything with one fatally wrong decision. But I'm figuring out slowly but surely that the things that truly matter in this world are never easy to do. Aside from that, though, I have been in situations where I was somewhat forced into a leadership role, and that worked out fast better than I expected. Basically, I guess this post is just me convincing myself that my fears about being a leader are all in my head, and the same is probably true for anyone else doubting their abilities as a leader. It might take a while, but anyone can develop the skills to be an effective leader if they're determined enough to do so. I appreciate your presence as I share what's on my heart with you today! Last time, I said I'd talk about another insecurity I have, and this affirmation image from @inspiredbytheviewofficial actually encompasses several of my insecurities at once that I'll have to face as I go after one specific goal. I've pretty much settled on the idea of teaching mermaid swimming to kids, as well as performing as a mermaid, be that by modeling, singing, or swimming in a mermaid tail. I came to the realization that doing that is pretty much the equivalent of running my own business, and aside from my lack of self confidence about doing basic adult things, I've never trusted myself with too much leadership or responsibility as a whole. Plus I keep associating running a business with having to get a business degree, and that's a thought that genuinely makes me sick to my stomach. But then I remember that my mother pretty much runs a business of her own, and her degree was in African history. Plus I'll have to deal with my fears about adult life and independence one way or another, and I figure the best way to do that is in the pursuit of something as important to me as this. So, if living my dream of becoming a mermaid essentially means building a business and releasing the worries I have related to that, then so be it. It'll be worth it once I'm adding some mermaid magic to the lives of people across the planet. I appreciate you being here and letting me share what's on my heart with you this morning!
