Ive got through most of the game and boy i have some THOUGHTS... spoilers under the cut!!
I didn't expect to like the game so much cause im not actually that much of a horror fan (<- squeamish) , and like i said in the last post I wasn't sure how fun a game all about decrypting the dialogue will be (<- dumbass). But in the end I think the game mechanics is exactly the source of all the charm!! And come to think of it, it's a very unique mechanic too. The word-guessing makes the game exciting and scary (and sometimes is the key to avoiding certain death), but there's also just something about overcoming "broken" language to express your thoughts that is inherently really sweet to me. Maybe this is a wild comparison but its like that greentext thats like "bad times friend ahead...i go away but we are two of soul, i will return".
The game is also just pretty player-friendly, and the characters are all (well, mostly) really chill, so it wasnt very hard to guess most of the words too. But i will say that sometimes, you can kind of tell the nuance of the language-translation makes more sense as Japanese, so maybe that gave me a slight edge.
After playing the demo I thought this would be a really short game (like around 2-3 hrs), but I clocked in a solid 6 hours today LOL...and im still missing a few endings. Big spoiler but when MC "kills" Mr. crawling it genuinely upset me like GIRL WHAT IN THE FRESH HELL..........😭😭😭 but thank god he was fine :DD the scene where he shut himself in a closet crying because he thought the MC abandoned him 😭😭😭😭 IM SORRYYY but also like omg...😭😭😭😭 he ouppy............😭😭😭😭

But in contrast to those heavy moments there are also points where i think the game doesn't take itself very seriously LOL so by like 3 hours in it just kind of became a really chill game :)) I love how the MC is just so ridiculously forward being like "Do you have a crush on me or something 🥺👉👈" and most of them were just like "whats that lmfao"

you know what i think Mirabelle deserves to get a little fucked up freaky in how she processes learning about Siffrin’s loops post-canon. for fun. as a treat
thinking about this line in particular and stretching out the implications like taffy

this is a more romanticized, cutesy facet of her interests but she’s still framing Siffrin’s situation through storytelling. so like. What If.
i mean. this woman loves horror and gore and monsters and horrible things happening to innocent people. IN FICTION. in fiction!!! obviously!!!! and it’s beyond terrible that something even remotely close to any of that happened to her real friend in real life!!
BUT.
maybe. maybe sometimes, if the conditions are right, she gets a little too wrapped up in her imagination about the bloody, awful poetry of it all. maybe Siffrin tells a joke that's a little too dark and gory for anyone else, borderline or full-on Concerning, but she latches onto it without thinking about the Implications and plays along with increasing gruesomeness because FINALLYYYYY someone will play with her in the Horror Space (like Isabeau does in the romance space!!) and then. OOPS. the implications!!!! and she has to recalibrate out of Fun With Fiction mode into Oh No, My Friend Underwent A Horrifying Ordeal mode.
but being able to joke about things, even the awful things, is...kind of comforting, to Siffrin. makes them feel less like they're being babied and pitied and more like what happened was something...normal, almost? something that doesn't have to feel like the end of the world all over again every time it's mentioned, at least. so he tries to reassure her, and Odile and Isabeau have to go “actually can you PLEASE not joke about dying horribly it’s freaking us out and also might not be the Best for you? mentally???”
maybe Mirabelle will get a little Too Into trying to weave meaning and symbolism into the scant details that Siffrin gradually reveals, like she’s trying to finish the orange poem all over again, or eagerly meddling with the romantic reunion of the two actual people in the House with undelivered bonding earrings, writing their story for them without their input.
it’s easier to justify the tragedy of it all when it has a purpose, isn’t it? finding the beauty in the darkness, the love powerful enough to end the world. romanticizing the horrors until her friend can talk about them without shutting down.
and she feels guilty about hearing something and immediately thinking “ohhhhhhh this is JUST like Blorbo From My Novels,” because she should treat Siffrin’s situation with the gravity and care he deserves!! they’re a real person, not a character who exists for entertainment, to represent the ~themes~ of some story.
but if she admits as much…maybe Siffrin is safe to admit that he had started seeing the rest of them as actors, endlessly reciting their lines. maybe that’s just how people process things sometimes, grasping for metaphors when unfiltered reality gets to be too much. maybe it’s okay to talk about that part of it all, too.

“To be wild is to be free” or anything associating the wilderness with freedom is a manmade concept when you stop and think about it.
Like, theriform animals don’t really have the same concept of freedom as our societies do (if at all). Freedom is commonly associated with independence or liberation from something besides yourself; in the case of our community, it’s associated with releasing oneself from humanity, any dependence on humans or human society, and/or the constructs therein. Theriform animals who’re wild or feral are viewed as animals who’re “born free”. Yet, that doesn’t make sense when you look at it from their point-of-view.
They are intelligent, make no mistake. That said, their perception of the world doesn’t factor the same concepts as ours. Typically, they don’t go about their existence with a concept of freedom— at least not akin to how our societies understand freedom. That’s simply their means of survival.
Some folks look to wild or feral theriform animals and think they understand themselves in the way, for example, Spirit understood himself in his titular film. But that’s a fictionalized perspective. It was depicted by human beings using a concept of freedom that they personally understand, not that of theriform mustangs.
I’m surprised not a lot of animal folk (especially therians) talk about this.

Sam confides in Vincent about his growing relationship and equally growing concerns.

Sam’s gaze was fixed on the umber mug cradled in his hands. He’d been that way for a few minutes now, ever since he’d walked onto the porch and handed Vincent his tea.
Their monthly get-togethers often had moments of silence, but this seemed different. It was a full silence, brimming with something unspoken.
“You’re a bit quiet,” Vincent remarked, “More than usual, I mean.”
Stirred from his absorption, Sam took a sip of his coffee and explained, “Sorry. Jus’ tryin’ to figure some stuff out.”
“You don’t need to apologize. It was just an observation,” Vincent assured him, “An invitation, if you want. Sometimes solutions are seen more clearly when the problem is said out loud.”
Vincent’s appearance was deceptive, sometimes tricking even Sam. Occasionally, he found himself forgetting Vincent was really his age and thus carried the wisdom that often came with that age.
Sam took another long sip then looked back down, as if he would find the words floating in the depths of his mug. Vincent was right; he’d let this stew in his head for too long. He needed a perspective other than his own.
“I’m so afraid to be happy, Vince,” he started, his voice heavy with the admission, “I don’t think I’ve really been happy in a long time. I forgot what it felt like.”
Vincent’s heart broke, but he couldn’t show it. He feared Sam might see how much it hurt for him to hear that and stop talking.
Thankfully he continued, though not without a few cracks in his voice, “And now this…this epitome of loyalty and bravery and selflessness and love has broken through the clouds like my own personal sun.
And I feel warm again. I feel joy blazin’ in my chest, and I smile ‘till my cheeks burn, and I’m terrified, Vince. I’m so scared I’m gonna lose them…I already lost the sun once, Vince, I can’t…I can’t lose it again.”
“Why would you think you’re going to lose them?”
Had something happened? Had they gotten into an argument? A fight? Vincent was about to press further when he saw Sam shake his head.
“I-I can’t…” he stammered, shame flooding his veins.
“Sam,” Vincent entreated.
He waited for Sam to meet his gaze before continuing, “You are my closest, dearest friend. You can tell me anything. Anything.”
Sam placed his mug on the side table between them, afraid the tension in his body might cause him to grip it too hard and break it. Vincent mirrored the action, setting down his tea and adjusting to better face him.
“I haven’t been…intimate…since Alexis,” Sam divulged, his words slow and strained. “I hadn’t even kissed anyone since her…until Tank. And even that took a while. We've been goin’ mighty slow, so I’m worried that we’re gonna get to the point soon where they’re gonna wanna take things further, take things to the next level so to speak…and I’m not gonna be ready…I need that emotional bond. I need that trust developed, I need to feel safe. I always have, but ‘specially since Alexis.”
Sam blinked hard against the burning in his eyes. His voice grew hoarse. “What if I tell them I’m not ready and they’re not willin’ to wait? Some people need that intimacy to feel close, to grow the relationship. What if they’re like that? Or what if they want me to…to bite them, or…or to feed from them? I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to do that.”
Seeing he was starting to spiral, Vincent gently interjected, “Have they asked any of this from you yet?”
“No,” Sam answered as he caught his breath.
“Have you talked about this with them?”
“…no.”
“Well, I think you should. I think that would be good for you both.”
Sensing Sam’s immediate resistance to the idea, he continued, “Regardless, I don’t think that’s going to be a problem. I’ll admit, I don’t know Tank as well as I'd like and certainly not as well as you do. But I’ve met them. A good handful of times. I’ve seen how they look at you.”
Sam scrunched his face in confusion, to which Vincent grinned.
“I don’t think you’ve seen what I’ve seen. The way they look at you…I think they’d do just about anything you asked of them.”
“Really?” Sam breathed in disbelief.
"Yes. Really. I mean, goddamn, they're devoted to you,” Vincent chuckled, “They hang on your every word like you're spouting poetry. They look at you like you handcrafted the world. When you hold their hand, they stand straighter. When you kiss them, their knees give. When they make you laugh, I swear I think they shift a bit. Their teeth get sharper, their eyes get bigger.”
A hesitant smile washed across Sam’s face as the tension in him began to subside.
“Yeah?”
“Yeah,” Vincent proclaimed, “Sam, you have nothing to worry about."

Imagine looking at a character whose entire premise is that in every stage of his life, he's made every version of himself into someone that inspires people to such a degree that EVERY SINGLE VERSION OF HIM has people wanting to literally follow in his footsteps in some way or another.....
And coming to the conclusion that like.....the most important things about him are the sum of all his trappings. His entirely homemade developed from scratch could not exist if not for what he already was and brought with him BEFORE crafting this newest version of himself trappings, with his greatest trait throughout all of it being his adaptability; his ability and willingness to roll with the punches and not try to simply weather any opposition or changes to his life but instead reshape himself as needed to better fit INTO whatever new shape his life and the world around him takes. All while managing to carry the most innate, fundamental and necessary aspects of himself from one version to the next. Thus every single version of himself is different but simultaneously every single version of himself is also undeniably the same person.
The strength of this character, to me, will always be that he can be so many versions of himself, he can become so many things, all without ever actually losing or discarding any of the aspects of himself he considers most essential, the things he's not willing to lose or give up just to keep going. Finding that road not taken by most, usually because most never even think to look for it as an option. But one that he's always able to find because the one trick he's mastered in his tumultuous life is threading that needle of not just digging in his heels in an unproductive way but rather being selective about when and where he makes a stand and decides "this is not a thing I'm willing to compromise about" but here are places and ways I can and will change and evolve and adapt in order to make it possible for me to hold onto these parts and keep them as they are.
And that's why its always so mind-boggling to me that so many writers can't seem to think of anything else to do with Dick Grayson other than invent some new reason for him to just....not be that person, or to like just take the character whose most basic fundamental trait he's NOT about to compromise on is willingly giving up his spot in the driver's seat of his own life.....and make him just a passenger in his own life and stories.
Dick Grayson at age nine....at age nineteen...at age twenty nine....the one core thread running through all versions of him is the only way he's standing back and letting you call the shots for him or putting him on the sidelines in some way is over his dead body.
HOW he goes about that, what that looks like, who he becomes and what aspects of himself he plays up at some times and what traits he lets fall by the wayside at other times when they offer less in service to his primary goal here....that changes constantly. He changes constantly.
But those changes are almost always (or at least they used to be/should be IN MY OPINION) made with the intention of keeping certain things about him or his life as consistent as possible.
That's the duality of Dick Grayson that I'm here for. The inherent contradiction of him that COULD allow for endless conflict and breaking new narrative ground in all sorts of ways if mined properly:
His eternal willingness to compromise....but only ever in pursuit of doubling down on the ways he's not willing to compromise.
Forever walking that tightrope in ways that only a kid born and raised in a circus could ever hope to.
#see also: my grinding teeth when people disparage his circus origins#like the only thing its good for is colorful backstory and explaining his acrobatics#THERES. SO. MUCH. THERE.#theres so much EVERYWHERE in every aspect of his backstory and his preexisting comics and yet over and over we get#....what if we just ignored all that and did what the fuck ever as though this character has nothing integral to him or fundamental to say#to be fair my gripes with Taylor are not exactly interchangeable with my gripes with the previous runs#but I lump him in as an extension of them because while evocative of different SIDES of my ennui with these takes on Dick.....#the thing about Taylor's stuff to me (or the parts I read at least) is that its generic as hell while only retaining superficial elements#of Dick's character and stories in order to point to them and say see these are definitely about Dick Grayson. like....only in very surface#level ways. underneath that theyre basically generic superhero adventures that could easily be retooled to be about a pretty sizable number#of other characters. tbh with the whole alfred inheritance thing it honestly felt from the get go#that Taylor was more interested in writing a kinder gentler Batman like a Bruce from one of the animated shows like#The Brave and the Bold who gets along better with everyone else. even the way the Brave and the Bold largely exists to use Batman's#popularity as a star vehicle to platform his co-superhero for the episode lends itself to Taylor's approach in his NW run#with the central figure - only nominally DG imo - basically existing as a platform allowing for the drafting of any other character he want#to write in any given arc or story in a similar way to how Bruce is utilized in Brave and the Bold#anyway. idk idk. my issues with Taylor are not the same as the others exactly but also they are and also I just plain dont like the guy#so I complain about him at any given opportunity even when its not technically as accurate or relevant as it possibly could be#I Am Flawed. its fine though dont worry about it. its called being nuanced
