"Just because I’m the baby of the family doesn’t mean I’m still crawling around on all fours! I’m walking! Sometimes on paws!"

Some kids complained about their parents being old-fashioned or out of touch. Try literally ancient. Even worse, while plenty of people were the baby of the family, Miyeon was pretty sure it was rare to be considered the infant of the family at age twenty-three. No parent wants to admit when their child is an “oops” baby, but usually, the gap between children is at most a few decades, not a few centuries. Sun-ja could say otherwise all she wanted, but there was no denying that Miyeon was a surprise. 

Planned or not, Sun-ja and Jong-yul were determined to give their daughter the best upbringing that they could, never mind the fact that the kitsune hadn’t tried to assimilate into humanity for decades. They found a cozy house in a small town on the coast of Maine and prepared to give Miyeon as much of a stable, normal life as they could. Sure, raising a child was always a lot of work, but how hard could it really be in the 21st century with all the modern technology available? It had to be easier than the last time, there wasn’t even indoor plumbing when they raised her siblings. 

As overly supportive as her family was, there was never any pressure on her to overachieve or be the best, so long as she was happy and did her best. It made it frustrating to even attempt to rebel or be an angsty teenager, but Miyeon sure tried. Her childhood and adolescence were a strange mixture of being overprotected and coddled while also being handed immense freedom and autonomy. Miyeon would get grounded for a week after not doing her chores, but would then be allowed to go over to her friend’s as soon as she asked the next day. Sun-ja and Jong-yul didn’t really know what grounded meant, they just knew it was a thing you did to punish teenagers. 

The one thing they were firm on, the one thing that she couldn’t even get her brothers to bend the rules on, was how to use her fox powers. What was the point of being a kitsune if she didn’t know how to use her gifts if she couldn’t excel in those? What happened to “doing her best” in that aspect of her life? Her parents never hid what she was from their daughter, but they didn’t exactly embrace it, either. As far as they were concerned, she’d have decades to master her powers and it would all come with time. However, she would never be able to relive her childhood, no matter how many centuries she was on this earth. Why should she rush to grow up? 

Well, maybe she wanted to rush to grow up so her family would stop treating her like a child, like she didn’t understand anything and hadn’t lived at all. Sure, she wasn’t ancient, but she was still a kitsune and she wasn’t a child. Having one tail didn’t mean she was just some stupid human with no clue and no powers and no right to live like a real kitsune. 

When she moved out and went to university, she thought her family would finally take her seriously and treat her like an adult. She was disappointed to learn that nothing had changed. Miyeon thrived on the independence all the same. She studied journalism and communications, eager to learn and share her opinions with people who would listen and take her seriously. She managed to become a DJ and started her own morning show, building an audience of people who would actually listen to her talk their ears off. It was great, she was great, and she knew it. Sure, it wasn’t hard hitting journalism she dreamed of, but it was popular. That was something. And her parents were proud of her. Nevermind that they were proud of her for everything. She was pretty sure they would cheer her on for breathing. 

Still, none of her accomplishments had convinced them that it was time to teach her how to master her foxfire or how to live as a true kitsune. She was still only one-tail-old, after all. 

It wasn’t fair, enough was enough.

Miyeon was done with being the baby, done with being treated like an infant, coddled and protected and sheltered. On top of that, she was getting tired of her peers acting like her show wasn’t “real” journalism just because it wasn’t an NPR style podcast or whatever. She was done being in the dark and she was going to prove that she was worthy of respect. How was she going to do that? Easy. She was going to earn more tails and learn how to master her powers all on her own. Did she know how to do that? Okay, no, not really but if the bedtime stories her mother told her when she was a kid were real, it could be done. It had to do with good deeds or good morals or something like that. She had those. She could demonstrate them and she could use her journalistic skills to get there.

One thing Miyeon had learned about Wicked’s Rest in all her time covering the day to day happenings was that there was plenty of dirt just beneath the surface, plenty of things that should be brought to the light. Things that she could uncover, people she could help, good deeds she could do. Things that could earn her a tail. All while becoming the next Starlee Kline.

She runs a morning show called Good Wicked Morning on the local radio station (and streaming services). It’s a mix of local news, brief overviews of global events, and entertainment, among other topics. The most popular recurring segment is “Florida man or Wicked’s Rest man?” It also gets uploaded as a podcast after it’s recorded.

On the side, Miyeon is trying to work on a podcast that’s more investigative journalism taking deep dives into the town and its mysteries.

Growing up, she often referred to her brothers, Dae-sung and Jae-hyun, as her uncles whenever they were in public. It made things a lot easier to explain.

Miyeon doesn’t know how she’s going to earn tails but she knows it has to do with good deeds or good morals – something like that. There’s gotta be someone who knows more in town and she’s going to find them and they will help her.

Her mother keeps her singular, measly hoshi no tama in an ornate box that has space for the eight others still to come. Miyeon hasn’t even convinced her to let her keep it in her own apartment.

Sorry, to choose Utah as bum eff nowhere and then insert a train with a convenient Salt Lake City International Airport stop 😭 this is my hometown airport here are some details to help visualize the very nice story (genuine).

The endmost Frontrunner train stops are in regular populated cities, the northern one is about 35 min by car and 1 hr by train from the stop that you transfer onto Trax (lightrail) to get to the airport, southern one (essentially a 2 university town) is about 50 min by car and 1hr 10 min by train. From the transfer station to the airport is 30 min. I'd not expect to see ubers only 2 hours after the endpoints. If Corey is driving Levi from anywhere past these points he'll probably have just driven Levi to the airport, so there's a possible red herring of Levi x Corey here if the story so chooses.

The airport became bigger in 2019ish to better accommodate the currently 300 daily flights it services (more on the way once the concourses' construction is completed) and locals have been up in arms about the long walk from check in to any gate. Our male leads will be walking from point A to a bit right of point C and that central path is not open yet so currently it's a 15 minute walk at a brisk pace. (Yes it's longer than it used to be and getting from concourse A to B is currently not efficient but it's still nowhere near as bad as say LAX or ATL.) As for lounges you can pay to enter there seems to be one in concourse A right by security so Levi and Xavier are gonna have a long and possibly painful for Levi walk together after their "no way same flight" exchange. (there's also a lounge for active military members and their loved ones in concourse A, and a Delta Sky Club in A and one soon to be made in B but those ones you have to have like super platinum diamond vibranium American Express Delta credit card membership and lounge access is like a twice a year perk not a paid fee iirc). Gate B9 is about where the diamond is in the less detailed pic below, and the N in "Concourse B" in the walk times picture btw. The connecting oath from A to B is an underground walkway between extremely long and steep escalators/stairs so to spice things up they could need to rush to their gate and if Xavier is unburdened, could bridal carry or fireman carry Levi once his knee gives out. >;3c

Losing the fight to control the Christian Democratic Union in 2002 to future Chancellor Angela Merkel and forced to retire from politics a few years later, Merz is now the frontrunner to lead the Union back into government.

With Germany’s ruling center-left coalition in tatters, Ukraine’s leading European backer is heading toward snap elections set for Feb. 23. And it’s all but certain that Chancellor Olaf Scholz, a Social Democrat, will lose his post as a result.

The domestic turmoil comes at a critical moment for Ukraine as Russia holds the upper hand on the battlefield, and Donald Trump’s imminent return to the White House may lead to a decreased U.S. involvement in the war.
