For years, Elon Musk played the part of the unstoppable force — a walking, talking tech-industrial complex with the audacity of Tony Stark, the stubbornness of Howard Hughes, and the public relations finesse of a blender on “liquefy.” He rocketed Tesla to dominance, bullied his way into space travel, turned Twitter into X, and somehow ended up running a government agency with all the precision of a toddler driving a forklift.
Musk wasn’t just successful — he was inevitable. No scandal could stick, no controversy could shake him. When his behavior turned erratic, his defenders spun it as brilliance disguised as madness. He wasn't arrogant — he was just thinking on another level. He wasn't chaotic — he was just too innovative for structure. For years, Musk existed in a reality distortion field so powerful it bent markets, governments, and public opinion alike. He wasn’t just winning — he was rewriting the rules of what winning looked like.
But now, the machine is breaking down.
Tesla’s stock has cratered. SpaceX’s rockets are detonating like Fourth of July mortars. X — Musk’s overcooked Twitter rebrand — is bleeding advertisers faster than a frat house hemorrhages kegs. His stint as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has turned into a punchline, and his behavior has grown increasingly volatile — public spats, strange hand gestures that people swear looked suspiciously like Nazi salutes, and bizarre social media rants that read like someone injected a Reddit conspiracy thread directly into his bloodstream.
Elon Musk — the man who once seemed unstoppable — is limping. The flashing red eyes are flickering. The gears are grinding. Sparks are flying.
But if there’s one thing Musk still has, it’s an instinct for spectacle — and perhaps, just maybe, a shred of self-awareness lurking beneath the chaos. If this downward spiral has a Terminator 2 ending — and God, wouldn’t that be fitting — it might just involve Musk pulling off the greatest stunt of his career: saving the world by destroying himself.
In Terminator 2, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s T-800 isn’t the villain — he’s the protector. He spends the whole movie shielding John Connor from the liquid-metal nightmare that is the T-1000. But when the dust settles, when the T-1000 has been melted into so much molten soup, the T-800 realizes his own presence is still a threat. His CPU — a chip filled with future tech — can’t be allowed to exist. To secure humanity’s future, he has to destroy himself.
"I know now why you cry... but it's something I can never do."
Musk’s moment — if it ever comes — may look a little like that. The man who built Tesla, SpaceX, and X may have to accept that the best thing he can do for those companies — and maybe even for the country — is step back and let them breathe. Tesla’s next great innovation won’t come from a CEO who spends more time trolling on X than managing his factories. SpaceX’s Mars ambitions will be a lot easier to realize with someone other than Musk taking phone calls from the Department of Defense. Even X, assuming it’s still salvageable, needs a leader more interested in building an online platform than picking fights with advertisers and screeching about “woke mind virus.”
Musk’s final act — if he has the courage to pull it off — would be to lower himself into the molten steel of retirement or quiet philanthropy, to step away from the chaos and let someone else take the wheel.
And just like Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, maybe Musk could manage one last defiant thumbs-up on the way down. A signal — to investors, employees, and maybe even his critics — that he finally gets it. That sometimes, the greatest act of strength is letting go.
The tragedy, of course, is that Musk may never reach that moment. The machine still thinks it can win. Still thinks it’s indestructible. Still believes that if it just keeps crawling, dragging its twisted frame forward, it can somehow bulldoze its way out of disaster.
But the longer Musk clings to power, the greater the risk that there’s no John Connor to hit the “crush” button — no one to stop the machine before it drags everything else down with it.
If Musk is wise — if he’s learned anything from the fires, the explosions, and the mounting wreckage of his empire — he’ll grab that chain. He’ll lower himself down before the red eyes flicker out for good.
And maybe — just maybe — that’ll be enough to save the future.

BMW M4 CS VR46 Valentino Rossi Edition - Full Tech Specs and Performance The BMW M4 CS Edition VR46 is a striking blend of motorsport engineering and iconic racing heritage. Created as a tribute to MotoGP legend Valentino Rossi—now a BMW M factory driver—this exclusive edition stands out as much for its performance as for its unique design. Rossi, often referred to simply as “The Doctor,” transitioned from two wheels to four in recent years, competing with BMW in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe. Driving the BMW M4 GT3 under the WRT team banner, Rossi has taken part in prestigious endurance races such as the 24 Hours of Spa, the 1000km of Paul Ricard, the Nürburgring the Nürburgring and the Le Mans 24h. Built on the already potent foundation of the BMW M4 CS, the VR46 edition retains the same 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology. Producing 550 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, it propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds. Power is delivered through BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, with a rear-biased setup for sharp handling and confident traction. The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission ensures rapid gear shifts and seamless power delivery. What sets the VR46 Edition apart are the aesthetic and symbolic elements.
Finished in a striking São Paulo Yellow, the car features subtle number 46 insignias—a nod to Rossi’s legendary racing number. Exclusive interior detailing includes Alcantara and carbon fiber trims, with yellow contrast stitching and custom badging that reinforce its limited-run prestige.  The M4 CS is already a high-performance, track-capable machine, but the VR46 Edition adds a layer of identity and legacy that motorsport fans will instantly recognize. It's not just a special edition—it’s a celebration of one of racing’s most iconic figures, fused with BMW’s relentless pursuit of performance.

Working on a motorcycle conversion.
Base frame’s from a pre-petrification dirt bike, 125cc, semi-intact engine. Had to machine new valve springs from scrap steel—got close to factory tension. Air filter’s homemade, obviously.
Using braided copper for most of the wiring, grounded through the frame.
Ignition's solid, throttle response is tight, but I’m getting unstable torque when shifting up from second to third.
Feels like either the chain tension's fluctuating or something’s off in the gear ratio—it shouldn’t be jumping that much unless I misaligned the rear sprocket.
I could jury-rig a tensioner, but figured i’d ask: What would you do?
(not because i’m stuck. just comparing notes.)
(( @chemicallydisinclinedd ))
If you don't already have four cylinders, that would be my first move. Made that mistake with the steam gorilla and I won't be making it again. See if the rear sprocket is loose, and if it is, just move the wheel. I'd tighten the hub, too. Add the tensioner if it seems like it might be necessary -- I'd only do that if the slack is more than an inch after checking the sprocket.
Once that's all done, I personally would take my lab partner for a joyride just to test it out. I'll be there soon with helmets 🫶

Where's the rant on water wheels. I want the rant. Gimme the rant.
I got some methylphenidate, a coke zero, some hard bop records, and fuck all to do at work. Send it. Disclaimer, this is largely a rant about European Industrial History; if anyone has any sources on like, Indian Industrial History or Ottoman and Arabic Industrial History or others, please send it to me, I would love to read it.
It is the year 1400. Your parents and grandparents lived through hell. You are some pimply teenager who's apprenticing to be a blacksmith. You go to work on what is basically a factory; there's a blast furnace that has bellows that pump in air from the top; there are trip hammers for shaping the tools, there's all sorts of mills for grinding ore into dust. It is all powered by water wheels.
The late medieval world was so much more industrialized than we give it credit for. Once the utter chaos of the early middle ages settled, the great knowledge network known as the monasteries held the keys to the kingdom; the one transnational organization dedicated to passing on knowledge. Meanwhile, the labor in cities, between merchants and craftsmen and those offering services, began to organize and gather capital to establish these industries, for leather, for iron, for wine, for cloth, for paper, for masonry. The structures of the economy were so much more modern than we give them credit for; it's everything else that's basically ripped from the Hellenistic period at best.
Watermills factor into this because they are the basis of all economies alongside windmills, but windmills are not constant and far more expensive, unless you are the Dutch. Every monastery, every hamlet might have a handful; at least one for grains and one for basic cloth fullinh. And it's producing at a higher level than ever before.
We spend years, ages dealing with this nascent if gross industrial production. Precision isn't a quality of those tools. It's why I think people stating the old adage about how the Romans could have invented the steam engine myopic at best. At its core, despite these grand water wheels, these huge leaps, this age where you might see a genuine industrial district on the rivers of Europe, where guilds establish their great artisanal manufactories, you don't have basic machines like the lathe.
The missing parts for that precision are things which the Renaissance really brought to the fore. It's the ability to mass print technical manuals; it's the ability to draw and sketch and mass print very precise depictions of machinery. It's a need - a profound need - to measure the world to its finest detail, which gave rise to the profession of "scientific instrument maker"! There was such a demand for it these craftsmen especializing in ultra precise gear became a class unto themselves!
And you slowly see, over the course of the 17th century and through the 18th century, a scientific approach to these great engineering projects. The first civil engineers are really taking control of what was before unstandardized master mason knowledge and providing us with the exact details. This is happening all over the place. The guilds must become scientific, become academic or die an ignonimious death. And, to their credit, they very much do. It is not for nothing that economics and engineering, to start, become academic objects of study around then.
Water wheels are inescapable and so are their background noises and smells until essentially the very late 1800s, and they anchor so much of life during that point; they are the premier way of making anything that requires force. And yet, much like every aspect of industrial life, they're completely forgotten or even purposefully ignored in some cases. It's such background noise we tune it out, and slowly lose them. Industrial history and archaeology as a whole is just insanely vulnerable because so much of it can just be removed within a minute and never brought back again. The last exemplar of a Barker reaction turbine sits in Puerto Rico where before it was ubiquituous across the US. A ship mill deteriorates in 50 years. And we forget just how automated life was.
I am tempted to say I am like this because I was born in a country where that sort of industrial history is functionally nonexistant. Brazil was deliberately and purposefully handicapped by Portugal for centuries; printing machines here postdate Napoleon. So to seek to comprehend what life was like in ages past it is this vacuum I seem to comprehend first and foremost.
At its core it's probably because I was a giant Anglophile as a kid.

Birthday Girl (FNAF-like Horror)
Today was a special day. It was Hootsie's eighth birthday. But it certainly didn't -feel- like a special day.
Here she was, huddled around a withering campfire, her uncles, aunt, and papa all crowded about like homeless among a flaming barrel, the adventure having already proved terribly draining. It was difficult to tell time in the Feywild, especially as their memories kept finding themselves readjusted, but Gricko remembered clear as day. He did his best to keep her spirits up, sat by the fire and drawing together. He couldn't give her the birthday he knew she wanted, but perhaps they could play pretend.
They drew together, pictures of her favorite place in the entire world; the Ratman Child Casino. She went there every birthday - except for this one, of course. They drew Chucky, Mr. Munch, Pasqually, Jasper, and her absolute favorite, Helen! Helen was a bird and danced so pretty, just like her! Maybe someday, people would cheer for her stylish jigs just like they did for her. They drew and drew, her papa making funny voices and singing songs for her, accompanied by her aunt and uncle, from the morning until it was time for bed. They couldn't do much for her in this mad wonderland, but they could do -that- much.
Unbeknownst to them all, however, someone else watched their festivities as well. The all-seeing eye of Scabatha lingered over their humble little campsite, sneering as the horrid little brat hooted with laughter and pranced about. Children...awful, -disgusting- little things! How could those utter morons tolerate even a MOMENT of that thing's awful prattling?! She sighed heavily, viewing her vision from the security of her toy factory. It wasn't even -that- that infuriated her most, however...
It was that she was the very same loathsome little wretch that escaped her clutches! Time-warped years spent in her toy factory, strapped to a wheel and used akin to a hamster to power the machinery, and for what? For the beast to run off and be lost to her sight, make her look like a moron?! This would not stand. She turned, the toy hag staring intently at the whirring gears of her numerous machines, thinking with bitter hatred. And then...her horrid face split into a wide smile, as she got a truly wretched idea.
The girl wanted a birthday party, did she? Well, if she couldn't have her...then perhaps her dear friends from the Casino could.
The next morning, the group awakened. Hootsie hooted sadly; she had fun last night, as best she could anyway, but she still felt unfulfilled. She hardly understood why they were even -on- this quest and yet stuck here she was. Gricko frowned, hugging her close, burrowing his face into her feathers. "Oh, Hootsie...this whole mess'll be over before ya know, I promise! Come on, let's walk around a lil' bit, while the others are still wakin' up, just you and papa!" He says cheerfully, pinching her puffy cheeks, her hooting softly and nuzzling her head against his. They stood, walking near the edge of the campsite, amongst the feted waters of the swamp.
While the others prepped and discussed amongst each other, they walked, through the thick brush and gnarled branches that had fallen amongst the water, Hootsie curiously swatting at a cluster of fireflies that fluttered up and into the sky. She splashed about in the water, a frog hopping up in surprise as she did so, the excitable owlbear eagerly chasing after the frog with a giggling hoot. "Wait up, cutsie!" Her papa called after her, chasing after her with a big smile beaming across his cheerful features.
Hootsie chased after the frog, until a loud splash made her stop in her tracks. She hooted curiously, turning around, expecting to see her papa having comically faceplanted into the water; but instead, she saw...nothing? Her big, innocent eyes blinked, as she looked around in puzzlement, seeing nothing but the sprawling, crooked trees and bubbling swamp water, seeing even less amongst the dull fog. Where'd papa go? Maybe he got distracted.
She was about to bound off back where she'd came to check for any sign of him, until suddenly-
"Are you lost, baby bird?"
She froze. There was a voice behind her. But not just -any- voice, that was...there was no way!
She turned back around to face the voice. There was a tall, stocky figure before her, her head craning up to see them properly. It was a Kenku, covered in pearly white, shining feathers, with bouncy blonde hair tied into pigtails cartoonishly plopped upon her head, with big bright eyes, and clad in a purple and black cheerleader uniform. Where her hands would be were instead a pair of poofy, matching pom-poms.
It was Helen! Helen Henny! The bestest bird dancer in the whole wide world! She hooted excitedly, hopping up and down on her little paws, nodding. Helen let out a giggle, her voice vaguely echoed, akin to one speaking over a microphone.
"Aw, aren't you just the cutest little thing? Don't worry! I saw right where your papa went! Come on, come on! Once we find him, we can have a party! With a pretty cake with lots of sprinkles - and rat snacks! Rat snacks are your favorite, aren't they?"
Hootsie hoots even louder, practically shaking with excitement. She knew! Of course, her and the rest of the band are experts at parties and always remember what each kid likes! Helen gestures one of her pom-poms onwards, running excitedly into the depths of the fog beyond, with Hootsie cheerfully bounding after her.
A happy, happy birthday it'd be, indeed...

They take you in the night
Pressed against a shed, drilled into your soul,
The arts of poverty and politics.
You dawn your jumpsuit and speak not of it
Trailing down your leg,
The drudgery of man fills your shadow
Your step haggard your back hunched
As you take your seat at the machine.
She groans and twists to your touch
Her winding cables dug deep into your skull
Engaging the turbulence day in and day out, absent reprieve
A despotic hum reverberating through the hail
The grinding of gears soot and smoke stacks
Pistoning through your mind
That cold crumble of the hydrolic press
Pushing into you, molding you into the spike of a wheel
Without mercy, it folds you
Not out of malice nor care
Silent indifference to what's crushed beneath it's weight
From your new shell, you look up at the stars
Such violence, they are ripping each other apart out there
But from where you stand
Pretty points of light hang from the sky,
They illuminate the factory floor for a brief moment
Before you're lost in the textile

What's the story behind the scar? (Pick any of them)
Swine: his scar was from the same fight that took his parents back in his old au. He should’ve died after that hit, but his father wound up blocking it giving his friend beetle a chance to drag him away.
Possum: his scar was two years after the crash, when he came across a monster who had tried raiding the farm before the crash. Possum thought he would be tough enough to get revenge on his own. He did win, but took some serious damage in the process
Dice: when he was working with the rich family in his old au, one of the mages lost an important business deal, and in a fit of fury, threw their wine glass at dice cutting his skull.
Slugger: her skull crack came from a work accident when she was 17. She was starting to outgrow her old role as the kid who’d climb between the crushers wheels to dig out any meat that got stuck between gears. She finally got stuck, being too big, and her skull was almost crushed before someone could stop the machine
Steel: his chin scar was from a metal cord at the factory he used to work at. One snapped while the machine was still moving and whipped him in the face. Luckily he and a coworker were able to grab it before it hit someone else

Which Rubber Machinery Commonly Uses Worm Reduction Gearboxes?
Tumblr media
Rubber is empowered by the workhorses of the factory floor. It just doesn’t roll. One such hero is the worm reduction gearbox, a silent yet efficient component that ensures rubber machinery runs precisely, reliably, and efficiently. The operation is literally pushed along by these gears, although most people focus on the big machines themselves. But what are the specific roles of these gearboxes in the background? And where are they exercising their strongest influence in the rubber industry? Let’s go figure.
What’s a worm-reduction gear?
A worm-reduction gearbox uses worm wheels and screws as gears interlocked together. This amalgamation provides a very high speed reduction ratio and is compact. Such arrangements require high amounts of torque at very low speeds, thus making them appropriate for heavy-duty industrial applications like rubber processing.
Worm gear reducers are most appreciated in rubber industrial gearboxes since they are capable of:
Offering quiet and smooth operation
Supporting heavy loads of stress
Offering big gear ratios within limited spaces.
Traditional Rubber Machinery Utilising Worm Reduction Gearing
Let’s discuss the rubber machines that gain the most from worm gear reducers:
Mills for mixing rubber
Mixing mills, among the simplest rubber processing equipment, require gearboxes to handle low-speed, high-torque operations. Worm reduction gearboxes are ideal in this application since they ensure uniform mixing of rubber compounds through the provision of constant, smooth roller rotation.
Extruders for rubber
Rubber extruders create constant profiles by compressing hot rubber through a die. This requires precise control over torque and speed, which is where the rubber extruder worm gear reducer comes into play. It minimises wear and tear and helps in providing the right pressure and rate of extrusion.
Calendaring Devices
Calendering machines that produce rubber sheets call for synchronised rollers. The worm reduction gearboxes ensure balanced torque and speed to maintain sheet thickness and uniformity across production batches.
Batch-Off Devices
Following mixing or extrusion, these machines pile and refrigerate sheets of rubber. Rubber equipment gearboxes—particularly worm reduction types that offer durability under repetitive start-stop movement—regulate the controlled, steady motion in batch-off machines.
Performers of Rubber
Performers play a critical role in precision rubber moulding since they mould rubber prior to vulcanisation. Due to their compactness, accurate movement, and ruggedness in repetitive cycles, worm gear reducers are often used here.
The Advantages of Worm Gearboxes for Rubber Machinery
Settings where rubber is processed need equipment that is strong and does not need much maintenance. Worm reduction gearboxes are advised due to the following reasons:
Compact size for space-restricted industrial zones
Minimum components and low reduction ratios
Excellent shock absorbing capability during initiation at high torque
Stable and relatively low cost for around-the-clock service
Conclusion:
Worm reduction gearboxes are the unsung heroes of the rubber production industry, where each mix, mould, and move matters. They quietly power the heavy equipment, like extruders and mixers, ensuring smooth operation day in and day out. Spending on the right rubber machinery gearbox can boost long-term efficiency and conserve downtime, whether you’re constructing a new rubber processing line or replacing old equipment. All smooth rubber items, after all, are driven by a gearbox that is actually strong enough to bear the strain.

Chapter 1: Introduction
Table of contents
Over the last century, the Earth has changed, becoming a cybernetic version of itself. Walking through the veins of any big city, you feel the sticky touch of high technology at every step – a "brave new world" made of wires and microchips.
Small towns, like faceless factories, tirelessly produce parts for spaceships and other tools for life here, like gears in a giant machine. Leading countries, with their leaders drunk on power and technological progress, have built an economy racing at breakneck speed, simply put, it's the "Wheel of Fortune." The "Wheel of Fortune" spins so fast that you can barely keep up; otherwise, failure is just around the corner!
"Oh, how many wonderful discoveries we have!" they say, "but at what cost, gentlemen? Oh, let us catch our breath; my head is spinning!" This thought often runs through the minds of many people.
"How obsessed these people have become…"
Elaine whispers softly as she navigates through the shelves of a regular store that’s open all the day and night. It's a bit dirty and has a stuffy atmosphere that makes her head spin. Usually, it's empty of customers; she rarely sees anyone here. Most people prefer more famous stores where prices are higher. A couple of times, she spotted a young guy who always bought just a bottle of beer. Apparently, the store doesn’t have enough budget for robot services, so an eternally grumpy middle-aged woman stands at the cash register and doesn’t even say "hello."
Here, there is an unnaturalness, a falsehood, as if everything around is just a movie set where nature forgot its role. Where is the echo of the real, created by life itself? But how could this generation, raised on artificial fruits of progress, know? Meat looks like it’s made of plastic, fruits polished to a glossy shine – products of new technologies stuffed with "beneficial" substances like pills against oblivion.
"Otherwise, how do you think people made it to this year? Thanks to us!" The annoying advertisement echoes in her head. It was there in her childhood on the TV screen and now involuntarily plays in her mind when she sees these pathetic food products.
She can only see a faint reflection of the past through the lens of two centuries. Her boss, a genius whose mind, in her humble opinion, borders on madness, keeps records from past eras somewhere – yellowed documents and decayed evidence of another life that he introduced her to for enlightenment. However, two centuries is just a blink compared to the abyss of the 17th century and further back. Those people were like tree roots connected to the earth; they breathed nature and understood its language deeper than Elaine ever could – in fact, she would never grasp it with 100% certainty. They knew that "nature is a book, each page full of wisdom," not just a pretty picture on a screen showing the recreation of extinct animal species. Yet somehow Elaine thought like them too. She had never truly seen nature, and it filled her with sadness.
But enough about people's life problems. After all, she should be grateful to have some money to live on while helping her boss with little things. In reality, Mr. Benjamin is quite kind to her. He is a pleasant old man for his age. He looks like he could be her peer, and Elaine just turned 24; he is twice her age! She has been working for him for three years as an assistant... But she longs for something new, as they say, a fresh breath of air...
Another day. It’s hot outside, very stuffy in the narrow streets and among crowds of people, making everything feel closed off and unmotivated for action. This planet has become too cramped. Neon signs hang everywhere offering all kinds of services, from virtual entertainment to exotic dishes that can only be tried in the most expensive restaurants or those reserved for VIP guests.
Loud advertisement sounds mix with the noise of traffic, creating a cacophony that fills the ears and clouds thoughts, like a terrible instant oatmeal that just needs hot water. Above, a clear, piercing tube carries high-speed trains every five minutes, whisking people from one part of the city to another where there’s a station. The flow of people and cars looks like blood rushing through the veins of a giant organism. Tall skyscrapers with shiny glass facades reach for the sky, their tops lost in clouds, as if trying to touch the stars hidden behind the dirty atmosphere. It would be nice if these geniuses created an artificial sky with stars and a moon, but it seems they haven’t figured out such a big project yet. On the rooftops, gardens and relaxation areas are set up where wealthy city dwellers can enjoy their riches and the panoramic view of the city that never sleeps. Their gaze is so haughty and powerful. She knows they are watching. She feels those looks gathering information for mental processing, reminding these rich people again and again of their luxurious lives.
But not everything is perfect. In the shadows of these grand buildings, slums hide, where life follows different rules. Narrow alleys are filled with old, crumbling houses covered in graffiti and signs of time. Here, the air is thick with the smells of street food and smoke from fires lit by those who can’t afford the luxury of the city. Elaine often walks past these places, trying not to notice the dirt, the poverty, or the desperate looks of those fighting for survival. There’s only hope that they will be cleared away or that someone will decide to give everyone money to leave and stop polluting the already tainted air. She knows that behind every door could be a story — a story of struggle in this ruthless world.
Elaine dresses simply in her loose clothing because she doesn’t like to stand out. She sips sweet soda through a straw, her ears plugged with music; she doesn’t want to hear the constant noise of the city around her. She wanders the streets like a ghost, blending into the crowd. Sometimes her gaze lingers on the faces of passersby — some smile, some frown from fatigue, and some just look down at the ground. This mosaic of emotions reminds Elaine that even in such a huge city, each person is a separate universe with their own dreams and fears, or maybe just one thought: “I need to make money fast” or “I can’t wait to get home; I’ve been working for hours…” She has had thoughts like that too: “I want to be alone…”
In the distance, she hears the buzz of new technology: drones delivering packages and holograms advertising the latest scientific advancements. But for Elaine, all of this feels distant and unattainable. She feels like just a speck in this huge machine.
She longs to return to her quiet corner; it's peaceful there. She is almost always alone in her spacious apartment. Benjamin only drops by sometimes, like a guest, even though this place belongs to him — but he probably has ten more just like it. Who knows, except him?
She stepped into quiet, clean, attractive, and spacious apartment. Definitely the best option for living alone. She did all her usual tasks like cooking dinner, watching an episode of a silly sitcom that makes her laugh, and reading a chapter from an old book. This work was written long ago by a genius philosopher. Benjamin has similar aged books in his home library. And this isn’t even his complete collection; what surprises Elaine more is that Benjamin remembers almost every book by heart.
She took a shower with slightly strange-smelling water. The water always smells different — sometimes fresh, sometimes not — depending on whether they clean the pipes that carry water from the global reservoir to people’s homes.
Now she was done with her tasks and lying on a cozy, wide couch, staring at the ceiling where voice-activated lights were built in. They were safe for the eyes and didn’t blind her, so it was okay to look at the light. She wondered what it would be like to look at the blinding sun, as described in many books, movies, and documentaries. The sun rarely showed up because it was blocked by tall skyscrapers and a dirty atmosphere from factories and other industries... Suddenly, she heard the front door open. But she ignored it. Elaine knew who had come in. Her mind was occupied with thousands, maybe millions, of thoughts about other things, analyzing everything she had learned so it could stay in her head. She tried to convince herself that her mind wasn't artificial intelligence, that she had a real "self." When she was a kid, her parents often scared her with stories that if she didn’t behave, they would turn off her brain, asking the AI inside her to leave. Of course, as she grew up, Elaine realized these were just jokes, but now AI was an essential part of people's lives. This strange creation had replaced humans in various areas. On one hand, it was convenient for her generation, but on the other hand, people back then found it hard to adjust to this new life. She often wondered how people then lived without such inventions. After all, they had their own knowledge for survival... And she wanted to have a mind like theirs... So Elaine didn’t really like this AI.
“Still judging humanity?” Benjamin suddenly appeared above her with his usual friendly smile, which was expected. Elaine slowly turned her thoughtful gaze to her boss and sighed.
“No, just the AI...” She sat up to give him some space. Even though there was plenty of room around, Elaine thought it would be a polite gesture.
“I’m not surprised. I get you.” he said, patting his favorite assistant on the shoulder and squinting his eyes as if preparing to say something that might finally catch Elaine’s interest. “You have a new mission, my friend. The content is ordinary, but the appearance is very unusual.”
At first, Elaine didn’t show much reaction. She was used to Benjamin dragging out conversations because he loved casual chats without formalities. Elaine liked that too, but sometimes her patience wore thin with his flowery words hiding the real meaning.
“And what’s this mission?”
“Heh, it’s a secret! But first, I need to take your biological data. Something very interesting is brewing, you know?”
Elaine looked at him and then noticed the neat black briefcase he was holding in his other hand. She adjusted the strap of her loose black tank top that had slipped off her shoulder. She wasn’t as fragile as she seemed in her baggy clothes; she had been working on improving her body through sports. Not many people nowadays improved themselves naturally; most relied on surgeries and stuff like that—too many to list since Elaine didn’t really keep up with the trends of her own time.
She nodded at Benjamin’s request, roughly understanding what he needed from her. Just DNA. For what? Who knows... It was pretty simple to collect DNA samples. Everything was ready now as she watched Benjamin carefully place the samples into his upgraded briefcase meant for storing something important while wearing sterile gloves.
“Thanks. Also, I’d like to take a photo of your external anatomy. That’s necessary too.”
Elaine blushed a little. External anatomy? Her body? What exactly did he want her to do?
“Without clothes?”
"Yes, without clothes. Sorry for the inconvenience in advance."
She sighed. Well, it wasn't so bad, really, having to be naked in front of Benjamin. She knew he didn't pay any attention to nudity. He said it was natural, that nature made them without clothes, and there was nothing about it that excited him.
She stood against the plain white wall while Benjamin faced her, taking pictures with a camera that printed photos right away. He shot her from four angles: front, sides, and back.
"All done! Thanks for being cool about this," he said.
Elaine nodded as she put her clothes back on. Benjamin set the camera on the couch and was about to toss the photos into his suitcase, only checking them for quality.
"Want some tea?" she asked, watching him slip on his classic, stylish shoes.
He grunted and straightened his jacket. "I’d love to have some warm tea with you and those delicious cookies you always get from that shop, but I can’t! Being a scientist is tough work! See you later, my dear Elaine."
With that, he closed the door behind him, leaving her alone in the apartment, lost in thought.
