Crystal melting and the glass transition obey the same physical law

The melting of crystals is the process by which an increase in temperature induces the disruption of the ordered crystalline lattice, leading to the disordered structure and highly fluctuating dynamic behavior of liquids. At the glass transition, where an amorphous solid (a glass) turns into a liquid, there is no obvious change in structure, and only the dynamics of the atoms change, going from strongly localized dynamics in space (in the glass state) to the highly fluctuating (diffusive) dynamics in the liquid. The search for the atomic-scale mechanism of 3D crystal melting has a long history in physics, and famous physicists such as Max Born, Neville Mott and Frederick Lindemann proposed different ways to look at it. I have always had the impression that we still do not understand the melting of 3D crystals, which is a highly complicated cooperative process involving nonlinearly coupled dynamics of a huge number of atoms. This complexity I always found very fascinating.

been thinking about jasper waking up after a werewolf night and going about his day as normal until someone just kinda notices something looks off about him. "is there something on my face?"

and depending on the person it's either "i think we need to get ito to look at this" or "this is the first time i've seen you forget to shave i think".

jasper with facial hair. jasper with facial hair! it could start as a side effect of the botched wolfsbane or even a side effect of the effective wolfsbane- as a sort of issue with adaptation to the changes, maybe. or werewolves have naturally higher testosterone and the wolfsbane makes it start to affect his human body. i dunno what the logistics and implications are but i think he deserves a little chin scruff for his struggles

Bumpy Particles Take One Step to Become Glass

Roughing up the surfaces of particles in a colloidal system can smooth its transition into a glassy state. [...] For researchers studying the glass transition, a colloidal suspension sandwiched between microscope slides offers a convenient, easily observable model system. Recent work focusing on colloidal spheres suggests that the particles’ surface texture plays an important role in the dynamics of glass formation. Now Jian Liang of Soochow University in China and colleagues have investigated the effect of texture when the colloidal particles are ellipsoidal [1]. They found that roughening up the surfaces of the ellipsoids simplifies the glass transition, causing it to skip over an intermediate state that’s observed when the ellipsoids are smooth.

(Just booked my flight home in April, a permanent move back to the US— I’ve been here for 8 years so it’s going to be surreal and sad, but for family/health/career reasons I know it’s the right thing to do.
