The Chipped Cup Awards 2025!
Dear Rumbelle Community,
The time is (almost) upon us when we shall consider our wonderful body of fanfics and fan art, and decide which among them will be our favorite awarded in the year 2025.
Even though fandom as a whole has been slowing of late, we are very fortunate that even so, so many years after the ending of our beloved Once Upon A Time, new writers, artists and others are still showing up in our little community. Because of this, as admin, I wanted to take a moment to introduce our event to those who may not be sure of what the Chipped Cup Awards entail, as well as what they are NOT.
In much the same way that the Oscars and Emmy awards are voted upon by the members of the Academy, so, too, are the CCAs decided by our community members. That means YOU!
Each year, toward the end of December or beginning of January, Rumbellers are invited to nominate their favorite fics for consideration in the Chipped Cup awards. The list of nominees is compiled from the gathered data, and a ballot form is made available to community members for their vote.
We (the admin and dedicated group of moderators) use the tools available in Google Workspace to compile the data, and winners are decided on the strength of the community vote during the event, and not on any outside data such as comments and/or hierarchy of kudos on AO3 or elsewhere. In the case of a tie, we still look to our current data, taking into account the number of nominations each fic received in order to achieve a place on the ballot. If these data fail to produce a clear winner, only then do we look outside of our community vote to make the determination, in which instance the decision of the admin and mods is final.
Basically, YOUR VOTE is paramount, and we truly decide the course of this event as a COMMUNITY.
That said, unfortunately, in the past couple of years we have had some truly ugly messages sent both to the event blog, and to our writer and artist participants as well. It is for that reason that we have disallowed, and will continue to disallow, anonymous asks to the CCA blog, and sadly, would encourage our creator participants - after the ending of this year's Rumbelle Secret Santa event - to also turn off anonymous asks for their blog. We do not want this small minority of posters, hiding behind anonymity, to spoil the event for anyone in the Rumbelle community. It is cowardly, upsetting, and honestly, Rumbellers are better than that.
This is an event for celebration of one of the longest lived fandoms on the internet; an event that rewards the creativity of its members with the recognition they deserve. We would like for it to remain a happy, joyous, and anticipatory occurrence for everyone involved.
We have seen some fabulous works of art and fiction through the years that continue to be created even now, and we are truly looking forward to finding out what our Rumbelle community is excited to celebrate on Skin Deep Day in 2025.

I'm Not A Writer. But All I Have Is Words
You’ve got the ideas. I’ve got the executive function.
I wish it were possible to stream my thoughts with all the flavours, smells, feelings, emotions and tactile sensations attached. Instead, I have to convert that sensory-rich stream into two-dimensional letters in an attempt to convey the experience. That’s why expressing what I feel is the hardest thing about using words.
If I have to communicate with other human beings, I prefer to talk about things that are understandable for both sides. I like to use language as a utility tool. To ask and answer questions, explain processes, share information, or establish rules for cooperation.
Yet when it comes to humans, they delight in overdoing the word dress-up even for those kinds of interactions. It’s draining that if I want to network with someone, I need to create all this hype, provide value, and employ intricate verbal gymnastics to explain what I do and why I’m a great choice.
There are tons of incredibly talented writers who can produce a mesmerising pitch, that would market them as the best thing since invention of a mobile phone. But. Will that pitch translate when it comes to the actual job?

That's how an ASD, ADHD or AuDHD brain would translate that shorthand:

And I can expect traits like strong focus, attention to detail, curiosity, self-teaching, punctuality, honesty, loyalty, non-judgement, directness, reliability, trustworthiness… and some awkwardness too. “Virtual assistant” Ha, she works remotely and is a contractor. It means I won’t have to fork out for payroll, insurance or give her a desk. We can work on the internets without having to meet in person and become besties. Yay! “Providing general admin” That means emails, files, documents, data entry, calendars, spreadsheets, organising, proofreading. I bet she’s good with Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace at minimum. But since she’s autistic—that means she might be even more capable or willing to learn. “For neurodivergent entrepreneurs” Hey, I’m neurodivergent and I have a business! That’s me she’s talking about. “Do I want to work with her?” I’d like to at least check out what she’s about—see if she offers what I want and other finer details before I decide. Aww, she’s honest, upfront, not pushy, and has the guts to reach out. If I dare to pass on the opportunity I’ll at least help by connecting her with my business BFFs. Our tribe needs to stick together because living in the NT world is hard and we need all the help we can get.

See? I wouldn’t have to spend 67 minutes to write 266 words when I could encapsulate the whole message in 2 minutes and 7 seconds—in just 57 words. (What’s up with all those 7s?!)
Sure, I could ask ChatGPT to write 10,000 words about what I could do for you��but words won’t get the shit done.

Alternate search engines such as duck duck go allow you to disable AI summaries entirely. What I like about this is that I'm not just hiding an AI summary, but turning it off entirely so it doesn't run at all. I've moved away from google search almost entirely at this point because of the forced AI garbage.
I don't know of any blacklists for disabling gemini prompts entirely, as google seems to change how it functions, but there are a few steps you can do that have helped me a lot.
To make sure gemini isn't scanning your stuff, go to https://gemini.google.com/apps and sign in with your personal gmail account
(workspace users who have admin privileges, gemini can be turned off entirely through the admin console -- if the gemini options aren't there to disable, contact support and they will enable those options for you)
Go to settings >> apps in the bottom left corner, and then turn gemini's access off to all the things
I found this disabled most annoying prompt things for me, but there are other things you can do to limit the power of gemini being shoved down our throats more.
In any google doc, go to tools >> preferences and disable "show smart reply suggestions"
In gmail, go to settings >> general and turn off

Smart Reply
If you don't use any of the smart features that existed before gemini (auto-creating calendar events from meeting invitations, putting flight info in calendar events, etc), then you can disable smart features in gmail entirely and I believe that propagates to all google apps.
With ublock origin, I have used the element picker to get rid of the gemini icon in both gmail, google drive, and google docs entirely because I do not want to look at it or know that it exists. It takes a couple of element pickings because there are several layers to the gemini nonsense, but after doing that, it disappears entirely. There is a little whitespace that's left behind but I'd rather have that then this little icon that twirls around trying to entice me like a fairy in a fairy circle to accept its bargain.
Lastly, I have not combed through this at all, but there is a project for getting rid of all AI garbage here on github.

Note Re Google/Gmail as of Jan 17/19 2025, Canada
-Turning off Smart features does not disable Gemini in Canada in my experience (can't comment on any other locale)
- the workspace features may only appear to only show up if you have a google workspace account. (All I can say is that my mix of free and one work account did not show these options)
-if your workspace admin turns off Gemini for your accounts, it only blocks access to the specific gemini app. You'll still have access (and will have to deal with pop-ups) for Gemini in every Google product
- We found a plug in for your chrome browser that hides Gemini's "help". Hide Gemini Unfortunately, this doesn't help if you have access Google products using an app and it doesn't truly block Gemini. It just hides it.
Hopefully the workspace stuff OP mentions comes through soon for the rest of us
It is with the deepest frustrations that I must report Microsoft has pushed out Copilot onto Microsoft Word no matter what your previous settings were. If you have Office because you paid for it/are on a family plan/have a work/school account, you can disable it by going to Options -> click on Copilot -> uncheck 'Enable Copilot'.
(Note, you may not see this option if you haven't updated lately, but Copilot will still pop up. Updating should give you this option. I will kill Microsoft with my bare hands.)
In addition, Google has forced a roll-out of it's Gemini AI on all American accounts of users over 18 (these settings are turned off by default for EU, Japan, Switzerland, and UK, but it doesn't hurt to check).
To remove this garbage, you must go to Manage Workspace smart feature settings for all your Gmail/Drive/Chat and turn them off. Go to Settings -> See all settings -> find under "Genera" the "Google Workspace smart features" -> turn smart feature setting off for both Google Workspace and all other Google products and hit save. (If you turned off the smart settings in your Gmail, it never hurts to open Drive and double-check that they're set to off there too.)
Quick Edit: I found the easiest way to get to the Smart Feature settings following the instructions above was to do it through Drive. Try that route first.
Now is the time to consider switching to Libre Office if you haven't already.

Building off of this (I was homeschooled from 3rd to high school graduation, and I'm graduating from college in two weeks just in case you wanted background lolol), a lot of students who went to school will have some "soft skills" that come in handy. Be sure to learn Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, etc., there are lots of free resources teaching you how to use Excel, that sort of thing. Once you get into college (and you will!), check out what you .edu address uses, Gmail, Outlook, whatever, and familiarize yourself with it. My school uses Gmail, and Google Workspace has been my lifeline, whether that is Google Calendar, or being able to navigate Google Drive. Practice with a personal Outlook or Gmail account if you are completely uninitiated to using it professionally like I was.
Also be sure to know how to format a paper in an official style such as MLA or Chicago. Nobody sat down and taught me what in-text citations were, what single/double spaced even meant, or that citation generators existed. I kind of just fumbled my way through it, but with how seriously plagiarism is taken in higher education, take advantage of resources such as the Perdue Online Writing Lab, and citation generators such as Grafiati and Zotero. When in doubt, as a librarian at your local library for resources. I'm assuming that if you're reading this, you have some form of access to a computer but in case you don't have admin privileges on your system, a lot of these resources have browser based options as well.
So sorry if this didn't make sense, I just remembered being a lost freshman who felt light years behind everyone else and I wasn't even that educationally neglected compared to others.
DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS
I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 9. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.
The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.
For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.
To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.
*BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.
TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.
Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.
