🎄💾🗓️ Day 10: Retrocomputing Advent Calendar - BeOS 🎄💾🗓️
BeOS, developed by Be Inc. in the mid-1990s, was an operating system for multimedia applications, multitasking, and multithreading. Initially designed for the BeBox—a proprietary hardware platform featuring dual PowerPC processors—BeOS was later ported to the Macintosh and x86 architectures. Its kernel was monolithic, and the system was primarily written in C++. It featured a 64-bit journaling Be File System (BFS), which supported metadata and allowed rapid file queries and fast performance for multimedia tasks. Despite its technical strengths, including support for symmetric multiprocessing and a responsive graphical user interface, BeOS struggled to gain market traction. Development ceased in 2001 after Palm Inc. acquired Be Inc.'s assets. BeOS continues through Haiku, an open-source project aiming for binary compatibility with BeOS R5.
A bunch of resources and links for this one!

Haiku OS is what Linux used to be.
This guy definitely has some points. One of the reasons I have been enjoying playing around with Haiku. (And I'm on easy mode right now as far as things like hardware support go, running it in a VM. Because I couldn't successfully get it up and running on hardware. Which was actually what got me messing with VMs in the first place.) Sort of double nostalgia value, like it seems to be for him.
But yeah, I was using both its predecessor BeOS on the side with desktop Linux as my base system in the early 2000s. Definitely not complaining, but getting my own Linux setup going again last year--on this random budget laptop, no less!--for the first time in 10+ years really brought home just how much the landscape has changed there in the meantime. (My personal tech history is sort of weird.) Things just work, and it's so much easier to find the info/support you need whenever you do encounter a problem. More loud jerks to navigate around too, of course, but that unfortunately seems to go along with the rest.
Haiku is still in beta after a surprisingly long time, and there is no doubt more than a little to be said about that. Some of which I have heard. But yeah, the idea of helping get more software ported over there also helped nudge my own interest in getting more up to speed on some programming shit, just because I can. Being the tinkerer that I am, at heart. (Bit of a shame that the available spoons and attention span don't always support that tendency the way that I would like, but oh well.)
If you are also interested in a bit of rather retro fun and/or tinkering opportunities, you might also want to check it out. Inside a VM, or otherwise.

Starting Production🎉🥂
ZippOS is an alternate operating system for stand alone “spacial computing” devices. The goal of this project is to provide end users, who at their own discression, void their warranties to replace pre-packaged software bundled with their hardware. As the lead developer of ZippOS, and as an end user of a “spacial computer”, I am displeased with the current operating software, and the decisions of parent companies that distribute these products are inheriently unstable, brown-nosing share holders and consumers, and completely unaligned with the end users. As these devices are marketed as computers, I want to provide software for said computers as a choice for the end-users who feel the same as I do.
ZippOS will be a lighter(get it?), faster booting operating system built from scratch with Rust-Lang and some ARM/RISC-V assembly code to replace both the BIOS (ZIOS) and the operating system. The operating system’s goal is to have the same user functionality and multimedia multi-instancing in a mixed reality setting, citing BeOS/HaikuOS as inspiration. This operating system will have security and graceful degradation as the main focus for user safety because the main enemy for ZippOS is the companies who made the stock software it replaces on the end-user’s spacial computer. Users can also enjoy various stimulating options for navigating the software (i.e. “rolodex” style hub menus, table-top program/application storefront, “grabbing” and “throwing” programs/screens to be cast/mirrored to and from realspace and cyberspace, etc). ZippOS is a project software operating system under development, and currently has no plans to publicly publish to the open net, nor are there any current plans to open-source the software.

New Folder turns to Empty Trash in Trash in a File Panel (i.e. an Open/Save dialog). This is because you are not supposed to be able to create a New folder in the Trash.
On the left is the before with New folder, on the right is after with Empty Trash.

I may have run into problems getting that installed and bootable before (can't actually find where I know I was venting about it a while back, which is probably just as well).
But, I do now have HaikuOS successfully installed and running in a VM instead!
(They've got info up for a variety of other VM software.)
I was also having trouble out of Virtual Box before, so said fuck it and tried something else when I got the urge to come back to this.
Anyway, I did rather enjoy messing around with BeOS back in the day, and thought the Haiku revival project sounded worth a try.

Well, that's a month done with Haiku as my primary OS, and it was fun. For March its going to be Solaris hopefully, although going to install something very unusual now just for the rest of the day. #12monthsofoperatingsystems #haikuos (at Lisburn) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9KHdidBzdK/?igshid=1setnekvvl305
