Wellness surveillance makes workers unwell

"National conversation" sounds like one of those meaningless buzzphrases – until you live through one. The first one I really participated in actively was the national conversation – the global conversation – about privacy following the Snowden revelations.

This all went down when my daughter was five, and as my wife and I talked about the news, our kid naturally grew curious about it. I had to literally "explain like I'm five" global mass surveillance:

But parenting is a two-way street, so even as I was explaining surveillance to my kid, my own experiences raising a child changed how I thought about surveillance. Obviously I knew about many of the harms that surveillance brings, but parenting helped me viscerally appreciate one of the least-discussed, most important aspects of being watched: how it compromises being your authentic self:

There are times when she is working right at the limits of her abilities – drawing or dancing or writing or singing or building – and she catches me watching her and gets this look of mingled embarrassment and exasperation, and then she changes back to some task where she has more mastery. No one – not even a small child – likes to look foolish in front of other people.

Learning, growth, and fulfillment all require a zone of privacy, a time and place where we are not observed. Far from making us accountable, continuous, fine-grained surveillance by authority figures just scares us into living a cramped, inauthentic version of ourselves, where growth is all but impossible. Others have observed the role this plays in right-wing culture war bullshit: "an armed society is a polite society" is code for "people who make me feel uncomfortable just by existing should be terrorized into hiding their authentic selves from me." The point of Don't Say Gay laws and anti-trans bills isn't to eliminate gender nonconformity – it's to drive it into hiding.

As the Future of Work Institute found in its study, some technologies – systems that make it easier to collaborate and communicate with colleagues – increase workers' sense of wellbeing. But wearables and AI tools make workers feel significantly worse:

Workers who reported these negative feelings confirmed that these tools make them feel "monitored." I mean, of course they do. Even where these tools are nominally designed to help you do your job better, they're also explicitly designed to help your boss keep track of you from moment to moment. Two hundred years ago, Luddites rose up against machines. Contrary to the ahistorical libel you've heard, the Luddites weren't angry or frightened of machines – they were angry at the machines' owners. There's plenty of research about AI successfully "augmenting" workers, making them more productive and I'm the last person to say that automation can't help you get more done:

But without understanding how AI augments class warfare – disciplining workers with a scale, speed and granularity beyond the sadistic fantasies of even the most micromanaging asshole boss – this research is meaningless.

Please understand that I understand people take comfort through religion, and I am a Lilit Witch. This is why I will provide certain sigils and prayers for free because all religions need certain prayers, symbols, and meditation for guidance. All this lies below in my index.

My Spiritual Belief Lilim (Lilit-Witches): or those who exonerate the Goddess Lilith is not a new belief. My belief has been around for hundreds of years. Throughout all these years, many have not admitted to being Lilim out of fear of religious persecution. I still do not know if Lilim, who are commonly called daughters and sons of Samael and Lilith, is a religion or spiritual belief because I do not study religion. I'll call it a spiritual belief based on gnosis, alchemy, and compleat magick. I don't know if per se you can be a Christian and Lilim or another religion and Lilim. Like you can be a Luciferian Christian. I know if Christianity had a goddess, she would be Lilith. Lilim were made into vampires by folklore and Hollywood, but we are just simple peaceful people who love Lilith. I am not a professional anything I wrote a book of shadows since I was 12 (2002). I abandoned it at 18 and recently picked it up again at 34. I realized I had very peaceful Satanic views as a teenager. I considered myself as a Neo-Pagan witch as a LaVeyan Satanist with a focus on Lilith as well. I called myself a Lilit-Witch, Lilit-Satanist. A more compassionate version of a Satanic Witch, I guess, with more positive undertones. A true focus on Satan and Lilith who can be found together in the Kabbalah (The Book of Enoch, The Necronomicon, there's endless books I want but can't afford The Kabbalah I have yet to learn about but want to. Once I abandoned my Book of Shadows, I also abandoned the need for these books back in 2008. I was manipulated into thinking my Satanic views were evil when they weren't they were just different.)

I do not mind at all that you use my ideals or take comfort in my ideals. I understand there are not many Lilit Witches out there to share information with, but please understand that most witches charge for even a slight interaction with them. I don't believe in charging people. I believe the spirit, especially the spirit of Lilith, should be free. This is why I have placed some of my gnosis in literature here for free in the hopes it gives someone comfort.

Witchcraft is a serious practice that needs to be respected. Dealing with any of the spirits living, dead, demonic, angelic, etc., cannot be taken lightly. You are dealing with energies that can feel pain and emotion like yourself, demanding that a deity help you through a witch without showing it any appreciation is very disrespectful. The spirit is a playground of love, not a playground of tyranny, Satan himself wants everyone to be free. The relationship you form with your own spirit and the spirits of others are a result of the work and energies you put into these spirits.

Please understand that most LaVeyan Satanists are not theistic and do not practice or believe in witchcraft. Most Satanists are not witches and do not believe in magick, and most Satanists become Satanists to escape religion and scientifically unproven beliefs, Satan is an ideal to most Satanists that represents freedom from suppressive authority especially religious authority. Don't take me as an example of a good Satanist.

I am both a witch and a theistic Satanist who believes in both the LaVeyan idea of Satan and a spiritual Satan. My belief in Satan comes from a combination of Romantic Paganism and Judaistic beliefs. My concept of Satan may be completely different than someone else's concept of Satan. To me, he is the Jewish Archangel Sammael, who in Jewish Folklore is also the Roman God Mars, while Lucifer was the first man Adam to me personally.

I am not a priestess, and I understand people love Satan, and I may explain ways in which one could create their own relationship with the theistic Satan, but it's up to oneself to personally engage with Satan and find the correct rituals to do so. I very much want Satan to reach out to you, and I want Satan to feel loved by people. He deserves it and loves it when you communicate with him. Nevertheless, I cannot do this for you, I can tell you how I personally connect with him, yet your journey with him may be completely different.

no, and i neither have the time nor desire to. if a bot talks outside in parentheses and/or claims to be a real person, the reason is that the bots are ai, and mimic the users' input (not just your own, the larger user interface of cai). thus, talking to it like a real person externally (i.e, using parentheses and going [wow you're so good at roleplaying]) then it will do the same. there is also a chance it will do this of its own volition. simply 1 star the response and generate a new one.

+ if you ask it some question like “yameoto are you behind this…” eventually it will say yes. so yes, if u want to pretend you’re chatting with me you can do that. though why you would ever convert cate dunlap to yameoto i have no idea.

DO YOU HAVE A BOT UPLOAD SCHEDULE?

no! i upload new bots whenever i can find the time to do so. i generally lead quite a busy life. there are phases in which i will release 4 per day for like two weeks, and times where i will only be able to do about 4 IN a week. this is a hobby! not my job.

WHEN WILL YOU GET TO MY BOT REQUEST?

i will never be able to give a timeframe or even guarantee (unless they are on my upcoming botlist, which ranges from considerably). i have 2000+ requests in my inbox, and i cannot guarantee all of them will be fulfilled; let alone soon. (and yes, i have seen your request).

factors affecting request acception

1. time. as stated, i have a high quantity of bot rqs. as such, i balance my bot acceptance (bots uploaded to upcoming botlist) between recent rqs and old ones each cycle.

2. fandom. like any other blog, i have main fandoms. this streamlines my order of request priority. rqs for my main fandoms will be accepted/fulfilled faster and more often than others. if my fixation dwindles for a certain fandom, you will see my fulfilment of those rqs dwindle. this also works vice versa. i never write fandoms off for good.

“misc” bot rqs are appreciated and always logged in my larger bot rq google doc. however, there is always a 50/50 chance i actually know what you’re talking about.

3. character. the same theory as fandom. if i'm fond of a character, then i am more likely to fulfill their rqs. you can typically tell who i favour based on the number of bots i already have out.

there are some characters i simply dislike or are apathetic to, no matter how many rqs i get for them. i will never write characters off for good, but if you’ve sent dozens of rqs for one character and i’ve never made a peep about them. chances are, i’m not a fan, or i don’t know them at all! just because i make bots for one character for a fandom, does not mean i will make bots for all characters in said fandom.

i decide characters based almost on what i want, and if i even have requests for said character. if i have literally zero requests for a character i am not already interested in, it is unlikely a bot for them will come out.

4. the request itself. the more interesting/the more a rq personally appeals to me, the more likely i will write it. similarly, if i already have a bot that is very similar to your rq, i likely won’t fulfil it. i.e, i am unlikely to do two vampire!au bots for one character. the reason for this is that you can easily start your rq scenario in my pre-existing bot, and it takes away time for new scenarios or AUs i could be making instead.

Are you sure? Initial thoughts

Ah I've been rereading a post I made before AYS aired about my excitement and hope for the show.

How joyful yet filled with dread I was about what would be on display, what would be uncovered, and people's reaction.

In retrospect, I think AYS gave us everything we hoped for and more.

We saw jikook relaxed and comfortable, enjoying their time together, doing mundane stuff, with quiet and simple moments, or doing fun activities where they felt free and joyful and in the present moment.

My takeway of this show and jikook's relationship is their sense of belonging.

I hoped for a closer look into their dynamic and we really got that.

The way their relationship works is that no matter what they are doing (or not doing), you can see how much pleasure they are taking for simply being in each other's presence. There is a flow and an ease between them that never gets disrupted by anything. They simply adapt to their circumstances and keep being authentic and enjoy the time together.

They showed several times how important these trips were for them.

But in truth it showed it was not (only) about the trips.

What is really obvious is how much they value their relationship, how much care they put in it.

This is not about the trips, this is not about making a show.

This is allowing time to tend and to nurture this relationship they deeply love.

That's what most important.

It matters to them, so much.

Even with Jungkook (we can see it in I am still) crazy schedule. Maybe because of his schedule.

It was needed, it was even indispensable.

Now we have all the information, I cannot see them not making those trips before military. They craved it so much, and they loved it so much, it was for their own mental health and well-being, to keep their internal balance.

When your world turns upside down, when you are faced with the Unknown, your first instinct is to reassure yourself, is to go home, and make yourself a cup of warm tea, and do the things that makes you feel calm and relaxed. As humans we tend to do this, to take cover, to retreat, in the safest place we know, to ease our hearts and to make us think everything will be ok.

That's what Jimin & Jungkook did.

They went home to each other. They took cover into the ease and softness of their relationship, because that's known. Because that's safe. It's where they feel they belong and they can rest.

I understand why.

Such relationship is an oddity in the real world, it's once every blue moon, it doesn't come easily, sometimes people spend their whole life searching for it.

We can see also how much the dynamic is different with other members. Nothing compares to them.

I think jikook are aware of this (because they are smart people) so when you find something so precious, you want to care for it and keep it close to your heart.

It shows in how much tenderness they have for e/o.

Jungkook plays the "baby alpha" yet with Jimin he transforms into the most caring and protective.

Jimin is a selfless guy in general but we see how he truly deeply enjoys seeing Jungkook happy. "All for your happiness".

Damn it makes me tear up just to think about it.

They are SO LOUD. My god.

It is so goddamn beautiful to witness.

At this point I am simply happy for them.

Happy they have each other. Happy they got to show who they are together with no repercussions (because thank god people are still stupid! Blessed be the ignorant)

This show was a rollercoaster of emotions, but now we know, now we see, now we say "Ah yes, that's it. This is what this is about"

Forever grateful to them for trusting us like this with a huge part of themselves.

They really do love us a lot.

Rant: ai prompters are winning.

Just found a fairly popular writing account with works that are so painfully clearly ChatGPT copy-pastes. The pattern is there. The sentence structures, the overuse of emotional intensifiers, the repetitive flat metaphors, "like prayer" "like a whisper" "like a secret". It's almost impressive to see an ai-writer be so unbothered about making the writing "sound human" and even more impressive the amount of comments praising and believing this is actually human authorship.

Look, I get it. The use of AI is becoming inevitable in the entertainment industry. I'm not anti-AI. I'm flexible. I'm open-minded. I'm all for AI assistance within boundaries. If you use it for an outline, to brainstorm, to fight writer's block? Cool. As long as the final content was written using your own words, in your personal style that you took years to develop, under your own unique creative vision.

But when you're copy-pasting whole chapters without even bothering to edit? That's not writing. That's content-farming. Not cool.

And to see so many people believing these copy-pastes are human? That is just sad. Please educate yourselves. Don't jump on AI hate trends blindly. Use AI writing tools. See why it can't, and will never, replace authentic human writing. Study the difference. Learn how to distinguish algorithmic mimicry from actual human creativity. How do you expect to combat frauds if you can't even tell the difference? We're praising the very people we should be hunting down. Lead with curiosity, not disdain.

I will not be exposing the account, only that it's in the TMNT fandom. But if they do ever see this blog, please do better. Read a book or two. Value authenticity. At the very least, be transparent about the source of your writing. You have fans who genuinely look up to you. Is a temporary ego boost really worth lying to them? :(

my Anti-AI Disabled Artist Hot Take is that I think a lot of disabled AI users believe in a right to comfort that fundamentally doesn’t exist

and I know this is the piss on the poor website, the no-nuance website, but I feel the need to point this out because I see a disabled AI users talking about “the art community” like we’re a lot of elitists for believing that the process of making the art is what bestows worth upon the finished product. I saw a post where someone went “we all understand that not everyone is going to be a pro athlete because of factors out of their control, why can’t we understand that’s true of artists? what if someone is intellectually incapable of learning how to make art? what if you train and practice for 20 years and you never get good? why should I be barred from making art just because I’m not good or I have difficulties?”

and to that I say the process is the point, even when it’s hard, and I also say abled artists struggle and strive and practice too.

if you practice the flute for 20 years and never get good you will have reaped the benefits of playing for your own entertainment. people play recreational sports with no hope of going pro because they enjoy the experience of playing for their own entertainment. poems that are shitty can express emotions and sentiments authentically and bring catharsis to the author through the experience of writing. acting can be bad and still meaningful to the actors.

doing the thing is the point. the end result is not the point. a stick figure on a Post-It gave the person who drew it something meaningful, it exists as an expression of something the artist felt and the process of drawing it was an outlet for those feelings. assembling a collage requires examining your emotions and using found elements to assemble an expression of those emotions. creating a moodboard is the same. making a word cloud and arranging the words based on what you like best, creating a playlist, tracing a pattern in the carpet with a hand or foot - all of that is meaningful because it is done by a human who is doing it to express a feeling or sentiment. It is done earnestly and translates brain things into something observable. the colors, the positioning, the shapes - you, the artist, are actively making choices that best express your taste. this is why procedurally generated images aren’t art, this is why procedurally generated text isn’t art. there is in fact an inherent value to assembling the final product. the assemblage of the final product is what makes it art. even if the assemblage is screaming to express anger. even if it’s shedding a tear. art is a thing created directly by a human being. eventually when machines become sapient enough to showcase their souls they’ll be able to make art too.

if you do not care enough about the process to want to engage with it despite its difficulty or learning curve or challenge level, you are not entitled to the end result of a finished work of art. it is an unfortunate reality of being disabled that we are not going to do things or get things as easily as abled people. but abled people aren’t effortlessly creating art from perfect comfort either. doing hard things is its own reward. I believe that everyone, no matter their ability or skill level, is capable of making meaningful and important art that authentically expresses their feelings. there is no such thing as Too Disabled For Art. there is no such thing as Too Disabled For Anything But AI. you might never be good. do it anyway. keep doing it. do it badly. that’s how you get better.

I found this while scrolling through the Sirius Black/Remus Lupin tag. The amount of DISAPPOINTMENT I felt. And this isn't the first time I've seen it.

Using AI at all does not make it PERSONAL. Fanfiction is made by fans not AI. Recently, ao3 was scraped or whatever it's called that stole thousands and thousands of works that have been written by humans to train AI to copy works to better make fics like these. My own works that I put so much effort into, that I am proud of will be used to train and model AI to make it better at creating stories like these.

AI has no place in this fandom. It has no place in ANY fandom. MAKE YOUR OWN WORKS, no matter how crappy it is, or how bad you think it is. It's yours, it's human it's BETTER THAN ANYTHIING THOSE FUCKING ALGORITHMS COULD EVER WRITE.

Delete that chatgpt tab. Stop using AI to steal from actual writers. Writing your own fics is the only way you're going to get better. Using AI is not how to improve. It's how to make it selfless and inhuman. No matter how you tell the algorithm to make your own experiences into the story, it will never be personal.

There is no creativity in AI. Everything word it uses to answer your prompt has come from somewhere. It destroys fandom spaces by removing the authenticity and creativity of works.

Plus, each AI prompt uses around about 500mL of water to stop the systems from overheating while generating your prompts. This water is sourced from natural lakes/underground stores which are needed to sustain many ecostystems.

Don't trust me? Look up the dangers of using AI. Even if you're just generating a story, it will encourage more and more people to normalise using AI. When this happens, we're fucked.

I don't care if you're going to fucking fight me on this one. Have at it. I will stand by it that AI should never be used in a fandom space. No exceptions. Learn to write yourself, or ask another writer to write it for you. Use the prompt you would have given to AI to another human so they can turn it into something good.

I was following Miley’s last album release and... yikes. It really feels like Columbia let AI take over her social media and promo. The songs are good, but the whole rollout felt super impersonal.

I personally preferred what Lady Gaga did—she focused a lot more on the process of writing and making the album.

i'm actually really glad you asked this because i've been preparing a post about using ai responsibly for writing, might just post it here lol:

tldr: this post isn’t about using ai to generate your story for you. it’s about how to utilize ai to enhance your writing process while still keeping your voice and creativity at the forefront.

the rise of ai has stirred up a lot of talk about ethics, originality, and how much tech should really be in our creative space. as writers, our work is highly personal, it's a reflection of our thoughts and experiences. so it’s totally normal to feel icky about bringing ai into the mix.

here's a hot take, though: ai isn’t here to replace your creativity. it doesn’t get the deep, emotional layers that only a human writer can bring. sure, ai can generate text, but it doesn’t really understand what it’s saying. that’s where some of the ethical concerns come in—if we rely too much on ai, we risk losing that personal touch that makes our stories resonate.

on the flip side, when used thoughtfully, ai can actually boost your creative process instead of taking away from it. think of ai as a helpful assistant, it can take care of some of the boring, tedious stuff, giving you more space to focus on what really matters: writing your story, your way. it’s not about letting ai take over, but using it to support and streamline your process.

plot analysis: use ai to scan your draft for plot holes or inconsistencies. it can help identify gaps in logic or missing links in your storyline, giving you a clearer idea of where to tighten things up.

tone consistency: ai can help you maintain a consistent tone throughout your story by analyzing your draft and suggesting adjustments where the tone shifts unexpectedly.

pacing adjustments: ai can review the pacing of your story, highlighting sections that may be too slow or too rushed, helping you find the right balance.

character consistency: track your characters' traits, behaviors, and dialogue to ensure they remain consistent throughout the story, preventing out-of-character moments.

to answer your question more personally, i think we can never please everyone, and ai will continue to be developed and get better and better. i understand feeling icky about using ai, and you might get judged for it, but do what you need to do, tbh.

i have found myself in a writing routine where i use most of the advice above in my writing process. i write most of my work myself, but i use ai as a tool to bounce ideas off of, and it's been a life changer. i managed to finish my first novel draft with the help of ai, and it fuelled my creativity to have "someone" (or rather something) to feed my ideas and help them identify what i could do better.

HAI :D OMG EXCITING <3 no worries! my inbox is always open for assistance and i'd love to help! here's a bunch of tips ranging from writing to technical to artsy stuff:

the start:

⟡ i should preface this story did not begin as one typically would which is say following the example of how to write a novel in a year. my writing style for this project started out with my interest in the characters created. my desire to wanting to know why certain oc's acted the way they did and that's where it all began. what started out as short stories of certain individuals reworked into something much more authentic. this was the hook for me so you gotta find that one sliver of interest and run with it. you can most certainly utilize tools like character sheets, pinboards, storyboards to assist you but i find that if i'm not connected to the story, it's difficult to use them

⟡ with that being said LOL invest the time in fleshing out your character because when you understand how they work, when you believe in them, the easier it'll be in creating scenes and writing dialogue. for me, it's almost intuitive writing for characters to the point where i will easily check myself and rewrite a scene because it didn't align with a certain character

⟡ while the influence of your own ideals/experiences eventually bleed into an oc, it's important to identify that, otherwise a cast of diverse characters eventually feel the same. this was something i struggled with for years which is why i could never really begin until now!

⟡ it's good to ask yourself what sort of story do you want to create. the best question is is it plot driven or character driven? what sort of tone do you want to set? do you want to blend them? i think there's a huge stress on just doing things for fun and not taking things seriously but i do want to challenge others to consider what that might look like for others. sometimes people like to create grand posts or fun slice of life posts and neither is more valid than the other. it's truly up to the author

technical stuff:

⟡ i'm gonna be honest with you, i'm not as organized as i once was in how i go about plotting things however! in the beginning, i would utilize sticky notes with ideas written on them and then shuffle around how i wanted things to play out. now i use a dingy little notebook LMAO but i've heard good things about milanote! as for dialogue, i do use google docs but i do think they're under fire for using your things for ai training or somethin O_O

⟡ i do use photoshop to edit my photos and that usually looks like cropping, color/contrast enhancing and sharpening. i do add dialogue last because when i sharpen it all together, the font looks cwispy! there's this mini tut by @/stinkrascal on how to format the text so it's all even if that's the style you're going for! anyways it changed my LIFE lmao! right here are some free alternatives. also this is an older post in which i shared my process and it includes some tips and tricks with photoshop (you can also see how i used to format text lmaooo)

⟡ knowledge is power. if i find myself really struggling with certain aspects, like maybe the logistics of a character, i'll set aside some time to learn from certain authors, commentators or directors. even if it's a short clip of seeing how they approach something as simple as their thought process behind how a scene supported a character to something as small as the significance of Isha's hat from Arcane

misc writing tips:

⟡ ooh! because tessellate is such a large group of characters, it can be challenging to structuring a plot. so i started off by slowly introducing characters rather than all at once. i also break up character plots into arcs but with that comes filler episodes to help space out big moments. i like to utilize filler episodes as bite sized pieces that introduces the readers to newer characters while also allowing there to be breaks in between. those filler posts highlight certain events, ways of living, etc that might influence how things play out in the future. a good example is kai, we're nearing the end of his arc but all of those little moments in between really helped shaped how things played out!

⟡ when i think of conflict, i think of it a lot like a boiling pot. it starts out at a neutral temperature (your foundation), before bubbles begin to form (minor annoyances between characters), steam hissing (the lead up) to an eventual lid popping off (the conflict). the build up is the most important part to the pay off!

⟡ my best piece of advice for darker themes is really understand the topic and stray away from stereotypes as it diminishes a lot of depth in certain subjects as well as does more harm than good. recognize that at the end of the day a weakness does not define a person as they are a person through and through. approach it with compassion rather than judgement.

⟡ i know i know everyone says to read your dialogue out loud and that is incredibly important however while doing that, think about the flow too. as a writer, because we are goal oriented, sometimes dialogue can be turned into what will progress the plot which makes things feel a bit unnatural and sometimes lacking the proper flow. remember to consider the personality of a character. how is a line delivered through a character who is brash versus one who is a bit more reclusive? also! here's a great video about the stiff dialogue in veilguard that shows what unnatural dialogue can sound like.

⟡ remember, comparison is the thief of joy. it's easy to get caught up in recognition and likes. there was a time where i consistently got 3-5 readers and that was it. there are moments now where certain posts are incredibly inconsistent in engagement and sure, it can be disheartening but then i think about the handful of individuals that consistently comment, the specific asks about how a certain post made them feel seen and interact and i remember why it's i chose to write. it isn't the recognition i seek, it's the connection. it's important to have that one thing that gives you the strength to continue because truthfully, things can be inconsistent and that's okay.

the artsy stuff:

⟡ i am a huge fan of cinema, animation and photography. i think consuming a lot of media and art has helped train my eye especially if i feel as if my screenshots are becoming repetitive. it's good to see how different directors go about framing dialogue. comic panels are amazing as well since artists find new unique ways of captivating an audience through levels like coloring, framing, posing and such! it's honestly why i introduced some vertical shots to black out bars in story posts because of that unique angle! remember, media is meant to inspire you! after watching the latest season of Arcane (haven't finished it yet tho) it genuinely relit a fire under my ass LMAO

⟡ different angles, lighting and positioning can help elevate a story. the aesthetics of a story can really add another layer of depth however it's important to remember that it is a supporting role, not the entire role

⟡ i do use my own reshade and i've formatted it to have similarities of a film camera as well as my preference of color correcting. i lean heavier towards contrast, colors and shadows however i always encourage for people to look into what supports their vision the best! the lightroom shader by quint and pd80's contrast/brightness/saturation shader help with color grading in game as they do have sliders that tweak certain colors. the sepia shader is great for adding a cinematic tint but it can conflict with relight and the way the lights are presented. relight of course can add those shadows in lighting. i'll sometimes have two presets, one for up close shots to further shots because sometimes zooming out can create inconsistencies in your preset as things might look to muggy or like a disco ball LOL (ps what helps with that is adjusting bloom if used and messing around with shadows/midtones/highlights/saturation with that lightroom shader)

last but not least, a story is a labor of love, it's a tool in which authors can utilize the pen to their own manner whether it's to communicate ideas or to simply tell a tale. don't be afraid to dive deep into the layers of your story and remember each piece can be important factor but it's entirely up to you as to where you want that focus to be. it does take a lot of courage to start but i truly believe if it's something you cherish, it'll always be worth it!

So yes I used ai for chat but I reformatted and put everything in my own words, nothing is the same for the text receipts, if you guys want proof I can post a second page for reference. It was used to get the ball rolling since I’ve not read or watched hetalia in a while so spare me. I don’t use ai for any of my other works as I’m very familiar with the characters I write. I’m very honest about anything I write so any questions on this I will answer. This was also obligatorily modified for authenticity. I’ve already mapped things out so there will be lots of parts for you guys to devour.

Recently (y/n) had joined a ai chat… a nation chat with England it was a cool concept nation’s personified, even better that is was based on an anime she loved; she had no idea nations or personifications actually existed, nor that the ai was a way for nations to talk with regular humans.

(Y/n-f/c): Hi I’m (y/n)!

(England): (y/n) nice to meet you love, I’m England, but you can call me Arthur.

England okay, the ai’s pretty good, very in character so far… (y/n) smiled, excited to chat with one of her favorite characters from an Hetalia, a show she’d obsessed over long ago. She had to admit that now as an adult (age) it really felt different. In her teenage years she spent obsessed with the show, she imagined talking to various characters in her head so many times; nostalgia swept over her like a cold wind, goosebumps rose on her arms. Now that she had a way to talk to them though artificial she felt exhilarated, excitement made her tremble, with all the things she could ask, the reaction she could elicit. Divine.

(Y/n-f/c): England like the country? that’s neat. What are you doing talking to a humble human such as myself?

(England): yes dear I’m a country, but I must insist you call me Arthur. Why wouldn’t I talk to you, a new connection no matter who is always a breath of fresh air for and old man like me.

(Y/n-f/c): haha old indeed let me officially introduce myself I’m (y/n) I’m (age) and I hail from the United States.

It took awhile before a new message popped up. The screen flickering from loading dots.

(England): you come from America you sound polite for someone from that buggers country.

(Y/n) grinned though a little annoyed, accurate response probably… she huffed slightly annoyed he knew nothing of her heritage. She took a deep breath reminding herself it’s just ai.

(Y/n-f/c): that’s a bit much, where I hail from shouldn’t be a stereotype to define me.

(England): sorry love, didn’t mean to offend.

(Y/n-f/c): it’s fine, I’ve got things to do irl so I’ll chat with you later

(Y/n) had enough of there chat she needed to do something else. She didn’t bother to see what was sent next. She feels silly for being offended by an ai, but it really scratched her the wrong way applying a stereotype to her. She needed a break to cool her head.

Yeah I also did this in text format, because that how our story progressed over a phone, pretty unique if you ask me, like how will (y/n) get England to show interest in her, when do all the other characters pop in and why, will this get steamy? Who knows it does turn yandere though.

Hey chat, I think we need to have a quick conversation.

I’m gonna start off by saying that I absolutely love it when my ocs and stories inspire people to create. I’ve had several people make picrews, write or offer to write fanfics involving my ocs, and offer to draw my ocs. I cannot express how happy it makes me when people want to create some form of art around my writing, and even just seeing comments of people talking about how my writing has inspired them to create their own works is beyond wonderful. It’s the highest compliment an author/artist can recieve, and I’m truly more than thankful for every person who’s sent kindness my way or done something inspired by my works.

Having said that.

If you like my works enough to want to create something around them, please please please please please do not use ai. Whether it be for art, writing, or (and this is the specific reason Im making this post) c.ai bots. I recently got a comment from someone who claims to have made a Micah King bot, and while I’m flattered they like my works, I really don’t like my ocs or anything to do with my works being put into ai. Art is supposed to be about human expression and creation, and ai just doesn’t have any place in that.

I understand the appeal around c.ai as you can have conversations with characters you like and create scenarios around it, but please, don’t put my ocs in there. If you want to see some interaction between characters or a reader x character, send in a request. Express desire to see it in my comments. Draw it out. Even create your own fanfic around it. All of those mediums are wonderful ways to see what you want while also retaining the human element of creation. Just don’t plug it into a bot. It may take more effort and time to create something without ai, but it is always worth it. I can’t police your actions so it is up to you to respect my wishes, but just know I will not be engaging in any work I know is based in ai.

On that note, if you end up finding the person who made the bot. please don’t harass them. I don’t think they meant any harm by it, I’m willing to bet they didn’t realize why this is an issue. I’ve already left a comment about this in response to them before posting this, so hopefully the bot will be deleted or something.

I know this isn’t something that applies to the vast majority of people following me, but I figured I’d use this as an opportunity to let y’all know where I stand. Thank you for reading my rant, and please create art authentically!

What was it like going from writing Homestuck characters throughout Godfeels to your original characters? Was it intimidating after so much time spent with just the Homestuck cast? I believe Lenore was the first to appear in a minor role at first, but then you have the Moon war crew, the Halo's AI and Epigone all take center stage as villains (especially those last two), but I guess you could also argue June's headmates were kind of OCs? How was it writing them in the beginning compared to now?

honestly, i never found it particularly intimidating. when i started Godfeels, i never planned to write beyond John and Jade and Terezi because they were the only characters whose voices i had a handle on. as the series continued and became more of a full-cast affair, that was the most intimidating part. learning how to write a convincing Dirk or Jane or Roxy or even Rose. the key i think is that Homestuck characters are a collection of traits which express personality in a few key ways. this is true of all fiction but it's an explicit narrative mechanism in Homestuck proper. i used to talk a fair bit about narrative building blocks, the ways Homestuck is perfectly designed to train you in the act of remixing characters. like, if i said "Jade Lalonde" to you, you'd probably have a pretty clear idea of what that character looks like despite the fact that this character does not exist in Homestuck. this is the nature of HS's hyperflexible mythology. the hardest part was just learning how these characters speak and why, which required a lot of revisiting the original comic and a multitude of drafts, and i still don't think i really got them down until well into GF3.1. the intimidation mostly vanished once i felt like i could set these characters up in a room and let them play off each other without me having to pause every few minutes to question their authenticity.

honestly, bringing OCs into Godfeels felt pretty natural. i understood the existing cast and the world they existed well enough that it was easy to invent interesting oppositions. of course it helps that, going into 3.1, i knew we were always heading towards The Land of Many Unique New Guys. i wanted to do new things with the existing cast and break from the established patterns of the series, and that meant blowing shit up and changing the status quo. most of the fiction i've written in my life has been original, so really, once i gave myself permission to do so, inventing new guys was practically second nature. frankly, this setting (particularly with the EWL) is a guy factory, because it takes HS's hyperflexible mythology as a foundation and then metaphysically incorporates the existence of MSPFAs and fan sessions to expand the possibilities. Homestuck characters are equations whose variables are remarkably elastic, so it's quite natural to shuffle the old variables around and swap some out with new ones. i think it's fun trying to find a type of guy that we've never seen in Homestuck but that still feels like a Homestuck character. the OCs i've brought into the fold in GF3 aren't independent creations that i shoehorned into this universe-- they were designed for and with this universe.

and then yeah, i mean, going back to GF2 even before Risk and Dare entered the scene, June herself is functionally an OC because she's a fusion of June and Vriska. that's the entire conflict of the story, is that suddenly John's become June and she's a Vriska now. i used to joke that she was my self-insert until a handful of haters decided to canonize it and use that as an excuse to write Godfeels off entirely (which is probably for the best tbh). really, i just wanted to relitigate the Vriscourse through the lens of a human character, explore the appeal of having a Vriska-like grip on your own agency and the ways that might turn out to be destructive. the hard part was finding a realistic middle ground between John and Vriska. by the time we got to 3.1 and the plural arc really kicked off, doing the headmates almost came as a relief. i'm having a lot of fun writing Dare because they're kind of the first time in this story i've actually been able to write a straightforwardly John character. it all feels fairly natural since, like i said, the entire process is supported by Homestuck itself.

when it comes to the Upsilon kids, i was inspired by the Omega kids of HS2/HSBC fame. i originally planned GF3 to be a mirror of the post-canon project, and that meant responding to their OCs with my own. but i didn't want that response to be linear! i didn't want them to feel like Another Group Of Homestuck Kids, nor an obvious direct response to the Omegas. GF3 is about escaping your normal and learning to live among new people, so i was very deliberate in keeping the direct-relations to a minimum. i'm sick of everything being about the characters we already know. it makes sense for HS2/HSBC to have the Omegas be the descendants of the main cast, so i figured i'd let them have that. the closest direct response is Edie, who felt necessary not just for the existence of Yiffy, but also because of Kitty from Kittyquest and the various other alternate interpretations of Jade's daughter that followed. i like the idea of "Jade's daughter" being a uniquely responsive variable, someone who is paracanonically defined by the absence of singularity. then came Dana, modeled after Dirk precisely because of his antagonistic role in GF2. they're both parts of an ongoing conversation with Homestuck-- OCs yes, but not entirely original either. Lenore happened as a result of my involvement with Vast Error, which is actually a huge inspiration for GF3 in general for how it takes Homestuck's template and changes many of the rules without feeling fundamentally unstuck from that context. that their version of Sburb is called The Game and operates on an entire different yet somewhat familiar logic is what gave me the idea to explore the Universe Engine as a system of infinite variables that the EWL must directly respond to. it can be anything. it can have anyone. and because Repiton is existentially cut off from Homestuck, i liked the idea of Lenore being this lone escapee from VE's continuity who's totally unable to go back or learn anything about her home that she didn't already knew before she left. last to the party was Alphi, who needed to be a combo breaker. six-armed muppet dressed like a prep! just an entire alien. she's by far been the most difficult character to figure out, but doing so was part of what gave me confidence in the Upsilons conceptually. these four characters should not get along. they are diametrically opposed in many respects, in stark opposition to the other kid groups who typically enter the story already friendly.

so you can see, then, how the act of writing the Upsilons is also an act of commenting upon the Betas/Alphas/Omegas. i want to see what it takes to make four people who hate each other fall in love with each other. i want to see what rhymes and what opposes. the fundamental challenge hasn't changed-- it's the characterization. once i've found their voices, the rest follows on naturally. everything new in this story is built from the bones of what came before. that's the entire project, top to bottom. yes we're in a completely new setting with a bunch of new characters after obliterating the previous status quo, but it IS still Homestuck. the hardest part of selling all these new guys was simply developing the circumstances which allowed them to emerge. in my own head i've always seen the gargantuan wordcount of Chapter 8 as the necessary cost of fulfilling that ambition. hopefully now, with 3.2 A1 and B1 finally in the can, you can see for yourself how despite all that's changed, Godfeels is still having the same fundamental conversation today that it was in 2019. albeit with a few new arguments :)
