In college, Harvey and Harley would poke fun at being Bruce’s first friends. He’d been so closed off with all those rich kids that it took him until college to really find his people.

But that’s not entirely true.

Bruce would say he had a lot of friends actually, just that none of them stuck around for very long. Meeting each of them was completely accidental. And strange. It has taken him a while to figure out what was happening, but once he got one of them to admit to it, the rest caved pretty quick.

You see, Bruce’s friends were time travelers.

They had crazy suits, some skin tight, others padded like a SWAT team, and all of them made of stuff Bruce had never seen before. They could also do insane tricks they were willing to teach Bruce, like backflips and knife throwing when he was old enough. They promised to teach him more each time they came back through time.

They wouldn’t give him their names, but they all had nicknames for each other and that worked well enough. Didn’t want to blow up the time-space continuum.

He met “Wing” first. He’d felt moronic calling someone that looked like an adult something that wasn’t a real name, but by the time Jay, Red, and Robin turned up, he caught on to the bird theme. The girls didn’t stick with the bird thing and neither did Tom, although the knew that was a fake name, especially because Robin would often try and call him Thomas, so he assumed it was close.

So yes actually, Bruce had friends before he met Harley and Harvey. He was just waiting for the day he would meet them in his time.

I desperately need fics of post s2 jayvik or even an au with s2 jayce and s1 viktor where we explore the change in dynamic after jayce suffers his own leg injury in the anomaly. Im sure people have already seen all the parallels and analyses of jayce and viktor’s injuries, but it’s just a concept really special to me,,,,there’s nothing more beautiful than connecting with someone experiencing a similar struggle—it’s just so much stronger because of your ability to truly empathize with the other. And obviously that’s ignoring allll of jayvik’s history. I just think there’s so much potential there to expand on the possibilities of their relationship.

I had a dream last night, or early this morning, that I was reading this scholarly book about how to write a dissertation. I have no idea why. But the book kept having... utmv references? Like, it would tell you how to do something and then use utmv characters to demonstrate

I got to one point where it referenced this supposed "famed" fight of Error and Ink. They went to a wild west au and Error supposedly "braved the chacoa in the canyons."

What is chacoa?? And why did Error have to "brave" it??? I don't know, man, but that is an exact quote that I remember

Anyway. I was reading, trying to discover more about this famed fight because it sounded low key interesting. Then, the book mentioned that Ink ran into… Coshuss. It was the au's variant of Cross. Imagine a very disgruntled bounty hunter cowboy and that was him. Getting angrier and angrier because it was apparently a source of comedy that Ink was having difficulty saying his name right

All I could think was, "Yeah, same, Ink." I had no idea how to pronounce that name

Well, the librarian who was in the room with her daughter with me, the daughter eventually had to run out of the room to get something. The librarian somehow knew what part I was at and said, "You know, you can admit what you thought his name was."

I didn't know what she meant. I guess she thought it was supposed to look like a bad word?? Dream version of me thought that too since I went, "Nah, I think it looks like... Koksue. Kosueh. Koshu."

Cue me badly trying to pronounce this poor man's name. Finally, I settled on one name I pronounced consistently, "Koshussss." Basically, "Koshu" with an awkward, annoying "s" sound dragged out at the end

The librarian woman started busting a gut. I laughed along too, even though I didn't really know what was so funny. Sure, I meant my pronunciation to be kinda funny, but not that funny

I then looked at the book and that was when I saw the correct pronunciation written out in parentheses

It was supposed to be pronounced CrossCross

I literally thought that was so funny, that I snorted so hard from laughing in my dream, I woke myself up.

A part of me is sad. I kinda really do wish there was a "How to Write Your Dissertation 101" book out there with utmv references I should know, but apparently don't

i dont think she'd kick her out though. she wouldnt. i think it's just that the more you break the rule, the more unpleasant she becomes to be around, and eventually youre gonna walk out on your own. she doesnt want you to, she'd rather you stay and dont ask questions. but if youre gonna try to ask questions anyway, i think thats whats gonna happen

A Positive Change Arc -- often called a Hero's Journey -- is one possible shape a story can take. It is not the only or the best character arc, it's just one option. In a Positive Change Arc, the protagonist begins the story believing the Thematic Lie, and must learn and embrace the Thematic Truth over the course of their journey.

TGCF and MDZS are not Positive-Change Arcs. They are Flat Arcs.

A Flat-Arc is a story where the protagonist begins already knowing the Thematic Truth, while the world around them believes the lie. In a Flat Arc, the protagonist will have their knowledge of the Truth challenged and tested, they will be tempted by the Lie, and they will ultimately use their conviction to inspire the world around them to also embrace the Truth.

Flat Arc characters do not need to learn the Thematic Truth. They already know it. They may be seduced by the lie, they may falter, but they will always rally back to the Truth in the end.

(If they ARE successfully converted to the lie, then that isn't a Flat Arc anymore, it's a Corruption Arc, and it's usually a tragedy.)

"But Xie Lian and Wei Wuxian learned--" Nothing they learned impacted the Thematic Truth. Did they learn things? Yes! That's how Being A Person works. Both of them DID change and grow as people from the start of the series to the end. But neither of them learned anything that impacted the Thematic Truth. Because they already knew it.

Xie Lian was already kind, he already wanted to help people, he already believed that common people should be protected and uplifted. His suffering at the hands of BWX did not teach him any deep or important lessons. He already knew the Truth. BWX tried to tempt him to embrace the lie -- that people are undeserving, that you should never do anything for anyone who won't grovel with gratitude, that caring for other people is a waste -- and failed, because Xie Lian knew the truth and even when he was at his lowest he was searching for confirmation that he was right. Xie Lian only needed one single act of kindness to reassure himself that he was right and BWX was wrong. He did not learn anything new, he reaffirmed what he already knew and understood.

Wei Wuxian is good, and righteous, and morally upright. He is a character who does the right thing regardless of the consequences he might face. The sects collectively wanted to destroy him because he refused to bow to them, not because he ever at any point actually did anything wrong. Even the vengefulness he showed while actively at war is narratively justified, and it's key that the sects did not care about the desecration of bodies while it served them. He did not learn any valuable or important lessons when the Sects raided the Burial Mounds. The fact that Lan Sizhui exists at all is proof for us as the audience that everything Wei Wuxian did was worth it. All of it mattered, and all of it was the right choice, because a-Yuan is alive. He doesn't come back to life having learned anything new, he already understood the Truth.

Obviously neither of them are Omnipotent. They learn that there's dudes in love with them, they solve the mysteries of their respective true Big Bads, they uncover some other stuff. But the Thematic Truth, the core theme of the story, is not a lesson either of them needs to learn. It is a lesson they teach others by refusing to bend to the Lie the rest of the world believes.

Hey so do you know where I could find this acting manifesto of yours?

I usually try and avoid publicly expressing my opinion on things like this but I recently saw some people commenting negatively on his acting again and I’m starting to doubt my own judgement.

I’ve truly never had a huge problem with his acting but I keep seeing people using really harsh words to describe his prior and current work. I genuinely think he’s doing a good job in THK but these comments sometimes make me think I’m missing something.

That conflicts with the fact I know at least three people he worked with on THK specifically had positive things to say about his acting too and I trust people who do this for a living to know what they’re talking about for the most part.

I guess I’m just looking for your post to have a more detailed perspective of the opposite viewpoint to “he’s a terrible actor” to help affirm some of my thinking so I’m more confident in my positive opinion of his acting.

Overall though I’m enjoying everyone in this show but for me I’m specifically enjoying the four mains the most. Kudos to them honestly.

(Disclaimer: Obviously everyone is entitled to their opinion but the harshness of some of the opinions took me off guard a little.)

I am obsessed with how narratively convenient Lark's divinatory abilities are. She's the only one of the protagonists who is both pragmatic and has a working sense of self-preservation, so having some internal impulse that is actually the guiding hand of the cosmos pushing her into doing the REALLY stupid shit is both necessary and really useful.

Like, I am the type of writer who kind of scoffs at the idea that characters are beyond the writer's control and will completely screw over your outline, because on one hand, a sensible outline will follow the characters' personalities and tendencies anyway. Obviously in an ensemble cast you will need to do some wrangling, but in theory your characters are responding to varying degrees of stimuli in order to maneuver them into the places you need them to be for things to all come together in the end.

But more importantly, "curse from god" is the funniest and easiest way to push any character to do things beyond the realm of reason when necessary, and frankly, what the fuck is the point of playing god if you don't embrace that?

Skylor made her way down the tunnel as casually as she could manage. There was hardly anyone here, in this particular corner of the maze, but that didn’t mean there was nobody. Patrols came through every so often, to say nothing of those who came out here to get away with things her father would not approve of. Already, she’d passed a pair making out in an alcove.

Another thing to be weary of here was Edengarde, but Skylor knew that the giant serpent’s feeding time was soon—and in another part of the maze entirely. With that in mind, it was easy for her to get to where she needed to be—but she couldn’t rush. Anything she did might end up reaching her father’s ears; best to act normal.

Skylor ducked into a crevice, slipping between the crack to reach her destination. The other end opened up into a small cavern used for storage—specifically, it opened up into the back end, in a little nook hidden within the crates. The nook was so small that Skylor had to crouch down, but there was still enough space for her and one other person to sit and chat.

And indeed, there he was, sitting in the shadows of the nook, arms crossed over his chest. “Took you long enough.” He muttered, reaching into the small satchel sitting in his lap.

“Can it, Cole.” Skylor huffed. “It’s not easy sneaking around when your every movement is recorded.” Cole didn’t have it easy in any sense of the word, but when it came to getting around unnoticed, he certainly had it easier than her. Nobody cared what he was up to if he looked like he was working, and hadn’t caught her father’s attention again. But there were eyes on Skylor nearly all the time. Even moments like these, hidden away in the cracks and crannies, seemed to somehow reach her father’s ears as absences from her usual duties, deviations from her schedule.

—Gray jumpsuit in the corners of the tunnels, tucked into the sides where nobody would notice him. Dark hair held back with old clips, white bandages wrapped around his hand.

A hand on her shoulder, guiding her back into the more ornate halls of her father’s palace, away from sharp glares and a single spot of gray in a sea of colors—

“Oh, touchy today, are we?” Cole snarked, pulling out a small bundle wrapped in cloth. “Are all your pretty princess dresses getting too tight for you?” He sneered, but allowed Skylor to swipe the bundle without protest.

Skylor rolled her eyes, but didn’t rise to the jab. Cole was all talk. Not once since he’d gotten here had he actually managed to do anything he aspired for—all his escape attempts ended in failure, and going against her father never ended well for anyone. All bark and no bite—the power of Earth in her father’s staff proved that.

—Meeting in an empty cell, sitting right below the window on the door and keeping their voices low.

“Oh, so the Princess finally came down from her tower.” Hackles raised, teeth bared, accusation in his whisper. “Finally get bored with being Daddy’s Favorite Circus Animal?”

A sharp kick to his shin, making him bite his tongue and hiss in pain. She had smirked, then, before leaning forwards to ask for her very first favor—help her get onto the factory floor.

Cole had been sold the moment she mentioned her father wouldn’t allow her in there—

But… he never really stopped fighting—he just got better at it. At finding places to hide away, at getting things he shouldn’t have and into places he shouldn’t be. For all that Cole was fighting a losing game, Skylor supposed there was something in how he kept fighting.

—Standing beside her father’s throne as a boy her age was forced to the ground, red-hot iron glowing above him.

Screams as she peeked through her fingers, unable to look away—

Skylor turned the bundle over in her hand. “For what it’s worth… thanks.” She pocketed the bundle, and moved to squeeze back out into the tunnels.

Cole snorted. “Don’t mention it, Princess.” He shrugged. “And don’t forget your end of things.” He reminded her, voice taking on a hard edge.

Skylor couldn’t help but turn back around to look him in the eyes. “Oh, you mean when I wipe the floor with you for an hour?”

“I’ll get you one day.” Cole retorted, and Skylor wasn’t sure if it was a promise or a threat. Maybe both. “Just you wait.”

Skylor turned back to the crevice, and started to squeeze her way through. “Sure you will.”

—”Oh, fuck you.” Words spat with a bitter tongue, frustration heavy in her chest.

A sneer, a response, a “sorry, princess, but you’re not my type.”

A kick to his shins to send him tumbling to the floor—

By all rights, Cole should hate her. And maybe he did. But if there was one thing Skylor could trust, it was that Cole hated her father more than he hated her. If there was something her father didn’t want her to have or to do, Cole would make it happen just to spite him. It was something Skylor could trust Cole on no matter what. The cloth-wrapped key in her pocket was proof enough of that.

Didn’t make him less of a failure jerk, though.
