I'm sorry but lawrenitez is doomed.

They are never ever getting together. They are touching each other chastely at best -- clasping hands, placing a slight palm on the back, pressing knuckles to a shoulder to catch the other's attention. And they are looking at each other, a lot, while trying really hard not to. Looking at the nose instead of the mouth; holding the gaze instead of glancing away, flustered. There's a tacit, comfortable knowledge that in another life they would have acted on this feeling. But in this life, they're several decades too late to change course.

Like he works the day shift so obviously he interacts more with civilians than any of the other bats, and because of a) the fact they see him more often and out in the daylight, not just shrouded in mystery and shadows, and b) just how he is as a person, they really really like him

headcanon that duke was that specific brand of outdoorsy kid that would compel him to catch beetles and rolly pollies and snails and moths and whatever other small critter he could get his hands on. i also like to imagine that he would beg his mom to let him built these elaborate terrariums for them because he wanted to build beautiful environments where the bugs would be safe and happy, just like what his dad did for gotham <3

i realized how tumblr sheltered the Conclave fandom was when i went on youtube and every other video essay was saying that it was "an attack on christianity" and "woke". way to miss the point

the point of the movie is to criticize the church, and how so many people now prioritize the church (whether it is the positions those in power have, the image it has, the power one can have within it, etc. etc) over actually following the teachings of Jesus (of forgiveness, and love, and caring for others, etc.) . it criticizes the conservatives (tedesco), who would rather return to the values that they think are right than to accept an ever changing world, and to spread the love and forgiveness that Jesus asks them to. it criticizes those who have positions in power in the church and have used this power to hide the harm they have caused others (adeyemi). it criticizes those who use the power the church has to further their personal goals (tremblay). it criticizes the liberals who claim to want to include those excluded and oppressed by the church in the past but refuse to actually stand up and say/do something meaningful (bellini).

and then you have lawrence, a man who fears he is doubting god, while in reality he doubts the church, yet to him what is most important is the visuals of all of it. it has to look like he truly believes, that he truly is fit for the job, that he really is a part of this. he has to make sure that the right candidate gets chosen that makes the church look the best. and it all comes crashing down when Benitez arrives. he is the ideal. he has been there, in the most dangerous places he can be, helping those in extreme conditions, even risking his life to do so. in the book he explicitly says that some of the most important work he has done is directly helping thousands of women who have been victims of genocidal rape. and he does this as a geniune desire to help others. to act by the word of God. he is the one with the least aspirations to papacy, but with the truest connection to God, which is why he prevails at the end.

and it is what a lot of people miss about him being intersex. its not this crazy plot twist to shock the viewers, or this dei inclusion plot to own the catholics or something. benitez is, out of all the 118 cardinals in the conclave, the most fit for the job of pope. so why should it matter that he is intersex? he is what god made him after all. but lawrence is concerned. does this make him inelegible for the position? what if word gets out? how will the people react? the concern is ultimately, about the church, how it will look, how it will react. not God. and benitez does not care what people think. he is what god made him, he is happy with who he is, and he has come to terms with his intersex traits. so once again, why should it matter? and it is what the movie is trying to say. so many people focus too much on the church, on the rules that humans have made up about what is right and what is wrong, on who is allowed to be part of the curia, that they have forgotten that god truly stands for. that they care more about the genitals of the pope than what he stands for, than what he is capable of, than the good he has done. and as a catholic it has put into writing (and speech) so many thoughts and feelings that i have had for a while, especially benitez speech after the explosion.

this movie does not hate catholicism!! it loves catholicism!! its symbolism, its love and detail for the setting, the clothing, the nuns. its all so careful and loving. the people like those i mentioned at the beginning are exactly who Conclave criticizes.

taps mic. clears throat. remus being the embodiment of the thoughts and fantasies thomas considered "forbidden" means he was, at least for a while, the sole embodiment of thomas' queerness as something to be feared or ashamed of or disgusted by. before any of the other sides could accept this about themselves, before thomas could accept it about himself. remus is the source and the holder of thomas' most unwanted thoughts, which at one point (and while this is technically subtext it is like 1 inch away from being text) included thomas being gay. if we get any dialogue or confirmation of this in the series I will do 1000000 backflips break my neck and pass out on the floor

Do you think Vincent would fix his own stuff? I bet he’s a fan of visible mending, and darns his own socks. He had a hole in one of his linen sheets and takes out a see kit and spends half an hour patching it up with a bright red scrap he found somewhere. The bird in the cage behind him as he looks at Agnes' computer, the birdsong filtering through the Sistine Chapel as he finally finds the name he's been looking for.

If Vincent is the turtle, slow but steadfast, clever, representing transformation, healing, always a little bit in its shell, now always in the Vatican because leaving would mean danger, then maybe Thomas is the bird.

Thomas as an unhappy caged bird, barely eating, plucking at its feathers, hardly singing anymore because maybe it doesn't know how to anymore. Thomas as a crow, maybe, or a magpie. He can appreciate the finer things in life, after all, he's clever, observant, always seeking things out even when he wishes he wouldn't.

When it's all said and done and the window is open again, he could fly away, if he wanted. He could leave, he could go anywhere he wants. Maybe he will, maybe he won't, maybe he'll stay of his own accord, perched on a new shoulder.

All this to say that sometimes when Vincent and Thomas visit the turtle ponds, Thomas will feed the turtles and Vincent will leave a handful of seed and nuts for the hooded crows. And in return they'll leave a pile of little goodies for him, buttons, lost paperclips, occasionally a euro (Vincent always puts these in the alms), and all sorts of little things. Incidentally, Thomas will come over for meals from time to time and will sometimes leave Vincent with a trinket from Rome or Ostia or England or wherever he flies to that Vincent can't.

They make it work, Thomas is often found just at Vincent's shoulder.
