Imagine keeping Whumpee in a cursed/magic display case 24/7. They're fed, they don't need to use the restroom, but there's not enough room to lay down, and they're completely deprived of human contact, and even if Whumper completely abandoned them, they can't die while they're in there, but is it really living, when they're trapped behind glass?

I thought about this a lot and I've come to the conclusion that this would be like being bound to an object entirely. Like living in a mirror, or being inside an amulet kept close around someone's neck. Caged, only ever being able to watch, but never even being allowed not to, never being able to sleep, or experience anything themself. All they have is what they see.

It would be indescribable torture to exist like that no matter what. If they are somewhere busy, watching over a street or something, all they can think about is how badly they want to be one of those people, free and happy. Meet with family, have dreams, goals, things to do, food to eat, hobbies to try.

But if they are abandoned, forever locked away somewhere where nobody goes, nothing happens, for years... Imagine setting free a whumpee like that. One that not only hasn't had an ounce of control over their life, but also not even a body to really speak of. How could a whumpee like that live? How would they act around others? How would they know that they need to eat and sleep eventually?

And what if its the worst of both worlds. What if they are fortunate enough to be stuck in a busy space — it's just unlucky that that place is a front row seat to the most demented torture of others, perhaps even people they personally know. They have something to watch, but they wish they didn't, they wish they didn't have to see all the suffering, they wish they could just close their eyes or stop existing altogether.

But also, being put on display is just a whole other flavour of awful. Imagine a fallen king... The kin of a rare species... The snitch... An example... So many reasons they could put somebody on display for, and have others stare at them all day.

I feel like it gets overlooked how Heathcliff is one of the more empathetic and caring Sinners. Even before the character development sets in he's shown to act very selflessly (getting his shoulder dislocated to have the security guards let the team through) and he sticks up for Dante, whom he *hated* on sight, when N&H want to dehumanize them. I think a lot of his "rough" side is learned behavior, mostly having to be tough to survive both the Earnshaws and the Backstreets, but he very obviously cares about the wellbeing of others even (especially) at his own expense and he'd be even more openly caring like this if it wasn't for years and years of learning to hide that side of himself. I'd say he's just as much if not more compassionate than Hong Lu.

YES!! it's honestly a pretty classic trope he's got, the delinquent with a heart of gold is just such a banger, but i feel at times it somehow flies under the radar... maybe not the type of thing pm fans are too familiar with...? idk. pacing-wise he's pretty different from characters like yi sang or hong lu, who go through a Realization™️ that completely changes the way they interact with the world. on the other hand heathcliff's realization is only the crowning of the development he'd already started ever since leaving the heights, and the theme of communication of that Realization in turn motivates that same development further: while he'd already shown himself to look after people more and more as the story went, after c6 he's also making an effort to do it in ways that can be more easily understood. you just take a look at how he expresses worry/attempts to talk people out of their Moments in 4.5 vs in canto 8 (even in a silly moment!) and u can tell the time that passed there, the different thought process behind them.

also since i believe this was sent last week when we were discussing mischaracterization, it reminds me- a while ago there was some truly stupid threads going around about how he'd been changed to make him less complex and how actually the original (and #better and #deeper) plan for his canto was for him to turn evil and... i found it kind of crazy how much attention some bullshit like that got just because it was popular users saying it, but it was also bizarre how many people really had either forgotten, ignored or just not picked up on all those moments, like... these are the very backbone of heathcliff's characterization in game! that is his character!

also, just like the exploration of hong lu's kindness informs the characters around him (kong qiu, elder huan, then xichun's character is pretty much built on it) heathcliff's empathy and his honesty does so as well- hindley and linton are obvious, but catherine too all but draws an explicit parallel between her inability to share her feelings with her loved ones and her admiration for him, who used to always wear his heart on his sleeve until he was made to feel like he no longer could. it's significant in the context of the city as well! we hear really often about how city people tend to become part of groups and communities out of necessity and pragmatism, usually referring to syndicates and fixers, but that so clearly applies to cathy as well, so once again his behavior makes him stand out, and it is different from the everyday syndicates "family" thing in that heathcliff resents hierarchies -something inherent to most of them- and is mostly pretty friendly even with weaker people so long as it goes both ways.

and that is when he's not directly standing up to protect them!

it's just pretty awesome. u see all these traits develop and become more obvious, and him become more caring canto by canto; it goes hand in hand with him learning how much he was loved and knowing to not ashamed of the person he is anymore.

your characterisation is really strong moya. do you have any tips

thank you nonnie! <3 characterisation is hard. here's some stuff i like to keep in mind which may also help you.

first and foremost!!!!!

make the story fit the character, and not the other way around!!

if you can't get a grasp on why a character would do [x] or why they're motivated by [y] it might be a good idea to take a step back from the situation they're in and reassess how they actually got there, outside of 'because the story needs them here' - in this way, they become more realistic because you start thinking of them more as a fully fleshed out person, and as less of an archetype.

for example; when writing the kean finale, i kept asking myself why he's so insistent on ruining reader's future if he supposedly loves them. the 'it's bc he likes them' excuse wasn't rlly hitting, and so i hit a slump even though i was 2k words into the story.

it was only when i gave some real thought to his motivations and deeped the situation that everything sort of clicked into place and i understood why he might do everything he does, which makes a character a lot more fun to write, bc you understand them :)

don't be afraid to write out thousands of words and then later delete them if you feel its not faithful to the character you're exploring!!

it's easy to fall victim to sunk cost fallacies, but it's worth starting over again if it makes you more satisfied/makes more sense w the characters.

some more advice would prolly be to focus on the present as much as the past!! yes, giving characters backstories that account for why they are the way that they are is obviously something a lot of writers do, because it can humanise someone who was, effectively, just words/pixels on a screen before.

however, that doesn't necessarily mean giving all of your characters a sobstory is going to make other people (whether that's other characters, or an irl audience) like/root for/be interested in them. the last thing you want is a character defined by their trauma, because then they don't really exist outside of it. (unless ofc, that is the point)

for example; kean loves playing team sports, bc he enjoys beating both the opposing team as well as outshining his own teammates by winning mvp. this is informed by the fact that he probably didn't get enough attention as a kid LMAO hence everything is a competition to him.

in the same vein, consider what sort of quirks or habits or interests your character has that allow them to exist outside of, or alongside, their past.

i think what's stumping me about this is that it doesn't feel fair to me to put on the same level pairings who have worked together only once and pairings who have worked together multiple times. im also clearly biased towards GMMTV pairings because i engage with content about them outside of their acting job, so my judgement is very skewed by the fondness i feel for them (but also i do believe GMMTV pairs are the most well-rounded, but the world isn't ready for this conversation)

all this to say that aside from the first spot in this list, the other ones are very flexible, but i tried to pick ones that i think are pretty well rounded (although my bias is definitely showing), so here we go!!!!!

1. aouboom. GMMTV's best kissers and high heat deliverers with effervescent impeccable incomprehensible levels of chemistry both on- and off-screen. they're incredibly versatile and you can tell that they're also fully comfortable with each other, which results in an amazing emotional and physical connection that makes every scene feel natural and believable.

favorite role for them: tanfang from we are (but dechmek from memoir of rati could easily steal this spot if done right)

2. smartboom. the only acting pair with just one project under their belt that im allowing to enter the list and that should tell you everything about how good i think they are. im honestly gonna be SO SAD if they don't get another show together (and i mean a NEW show, not a second season of top form) because i think the way they're able to engage with each other on-screen is insane. it's not just about chemistry, it's how they play off each other's emotions and reactions too. the industry would be crazy not to invest on them.

favorite role for them: jinakin from top form (well. there wasn't much of a choice here ;;;;;)

3. earthmix. look, ossan's love thailand was a mess and a half but it was also a great reminder of earthmix's range as actors and as a pairing, which unfortunately i tend to forget way too often. no matter the genre or the role, they're gonna deliver an incredible performance whether they are in a scene together or not. they are amazing actors, have a wide emotional range, and their chemistry is still one of the best i've ever seen.

favorite role for them: phuphatian from a tale of thousand stars

4. daouoffroad. the theme of this list is becoming 'genuine off-screen relationships based on mutual understanding and respect translate amazingly on-screen', which is something i do firmly believe in, and daouoffroad is a perfect example of this. i think they're extremely well-balanced and can play off each other really well, so they're able to balance their respective weaknesses out while maximizing their strengths.

favorite role for them: sanvee from century of love

5. forcebook. i can see people making faces and rolling their eyes and shaking their head but I DON'T CARE. these two have known each other for more than 20 years and it SHOWS. their connection is such a living breathing thing that it feels like the universe needs to expand around them to make space for it every time they're on screen together. they're like two planets orbiting each other and it's always a pleasure to watch, even in the moments where they're rough around the edges (mostly force).

favorite role for them: phoomvicha from peaceful property (because it's the proof that with a good script they can DEVOUR it)
