36. THE DOMINION OF CAPITAL OVER LABOUR
Capital, according to bourgeois economists, is stored labour serving as a means for fresh production. They come to this conclusion because they look upon capital as an assemblage of raw materials, instruments of labour, and supplies for the maintenance of life, the whole being essential to the continuance of production. But all these constituent parts of capital are commodities, that is to say they are products that are already endowed with a definitely social character, which they assume only after economic relations have reached a certain stage of development. Thus capital is not merely a sum of material products; it is an assemblage of products which are commodities, which are exchange-values, which are objects having a social significance. Every sum of commodities is such a sum of exchange-values. How is its conversion into capital effected?
«How is a quantity of commodities, of exchange-values transformed into capital? In this way. As an independent social power (i.e., as the power of a part of society), it maintains itself and increases itself through exchange for living labour power. The existence of a class of persons who own nothing except their capacity for labour is an indispensable prerequisite to the existence of capital. Only the rule of stored-up, past, materialised labour over living labour, transforms stored-up labour into capital. Capital does not consist in this, that stored-up labour serves living labour as a means for fresh production. It consists in this, that living labour serves stored-up labour as a means for maintaining and increasing its exchange-value.» (Marx, Lohnarbeit und Kapital, pp. 26-27; Wage-Labour and Capital, pp. 17-18.)
In Capital, Marx gives an even clearer exposition of the way in which stored-up, dead labour rules living labour, in which past labour rules present labour:
«All kinds of capitalist production, in so far as they are not merely labour processes, but also processes for promoting the self-expansion of capital, have this in common, that in them the worker does not use the instruments of labour, but the instruments of labour use the worker. However, it is only in machine production that this inversion acquires a technical and palpable reality. Through its conversion into an automaton, the instrument of labour comes to confront the worker during the labour process as capital, as dead labour, which controls the living labour and sucks it dry.» (Marx, Capital, I, 455-6.)
The system of society in which the great majority of the population is obliged to sell itself for a paltry wage, is described by bourgeois economists as a "free" regime.
«Do not let yourselves be deceived by that abstraction 'freedom'», exclaimed Marx in the speech on free trade from which I have already quoted. «Whose freedom? The word does not betoken the freedom of one person in relation to another. It betokens merely freedom for capital to oppress the worker. Why should people try to find a warrant for 'free' competition by invoking the sanction of this idea of freedom, seeing that the idea of freedom is itself only the product of a state of affairs based on free competition?» (See Misere de la philosophic, pp. 287-8; Quelch's translation, P. 193.)

Some broader thoughts about Minecraft:
First, some nice things:
Increasing the world height and adding bigger, deeper caves was an unqualified benefit to the game. Finally we deliver on the promise of 'Cave Game Tech Test'!
I am so happy that bundles, saddles and leads are all getting easy crafting recipes. These are utility items every early game player craves! They shouldn't be locked behind something so esoteric as killing slimes, or farming rabbits, or dungeroneering.
The addition of an offhand slot in 1.9, which I was soooo opposed to at the time, was to the game's benefit. Such a great change.
I really like the 1.13 fish mobs!
More fantastical biomes will always be good for the game. Realism is not what I come to MC for, I come for the beautiful cubic vistas I can shape and build in.
Second, some critical thoughts:
Post-1.0 updates have mostly felt like Mojang thinks the game is done, and just needs to be polished. I disagree. I think that release came too soon -- before they'd sanded all the hard edges down and really came up with a coherent identity -- and over the last ~fourteen years we've gone from a rough game with a lot of sharp edges to a very shiny game with a lot of sharp edges.
Everybody loooooooves that Soren Johnson quote that "given the opportunity, players will optimize the fun out of a game" but I think they often forget/ignore the corollary -- from Sid Meier -- that "one of the responsibilities of designers is to protect the player from themselves". Players optimizing the fun out of a game is a failure of game design, not player psychology. Nobody ever made Tetris unfun for themselves! (Well, not in any large numbers, anyway.)
There are three primary interactions one has with Minecraft: Extraction, Construction, and Combat. Of these three, I think it'd be hard to argue that the first two aren't the "core appeal" of the game. Those are the sandbox parts!
There are overlaps between these of course. Digging a trench is both extraction and construction, and killing monsters for their loot is combat and extraction; but, as I've already said, there aren't that many actions which are both construction and combat. Pillaring, I guess.
Beds are insanely overpowered. They skip night, making them the ultimate construction and allowing you to bypass Overworld surface combat entirely; they're the cheapest explosive in the Nether and End by a mile, making them the best means of mining ancient debris (the endgame ore) and one of the best tools for combating the Ender Dragon; and if you don't use them Mojang will send a squad of attack drones to kill your ass. My fix is to: 1) keep beds, but remove all functionality besides setting your spawn point 2) add a new end-game item, maybe in the outer End, that allows players to skip the night at the cost of some resource 3) replace exploding beds with a simple message that you can't sleep there, like "monsters nearby". Respawn anchors are fine, I have no beef with them. (A little useless, maybe, but I digress.)
When's the last time you used TNT in survival mode? I think it is to the game's detriment that there are continuous-need resources locked behind combat/extraction, like sulphur. I propose two potential solutions: 1) make "mob farm" literal and let me breed creepers/spiders/other non-humanoid mobs or 2) make sulphur and similar resources something you can mine, like string. Sulphur already occurs underground in the real world! Now we're putting less gameplay pressure on MC's weak, slow, boring combat system and more onto the interesting parts -- building and mining, respectively. (These aren't mutually exclusive either, we could do both!)
Here's another problem with TNT: sand is a pain in the butt to get. There are two reasons for this: the first is that 90% of it occurs on the surface, meaning that to get large quantities of it you have to destroy your surrounding environment. The second is that you need so goddamned much of it! This is fine for glass, because you rarely need much and can generally dig up ten or so blocks from a nearby beach, but nobody wants to walk to a desert to get four stacks of sand for a stack of TNT! My proposal is to replace sand in the crafting recipe with clay balls. Now players want to seek out lush caves, they need to break fewer blocks, and it can all happen underground!
Racist implications aside, Villages and Villagers have always been one of the least interesting parts of the game. That so many recent updates and spinoff materials have been focused on pushing players into them is to the game's detriment, I think. I don't care about Pillagers, I don't care about Illagers, I barely care about Witches. I don't care about raids and I don't want to defend these assholes from shit. I preferred when I was the only intelligent life in the universe, thank you very much. Piglins are...better, they feel more Minecraft-ey...but again I preferred when I was the only intelligent life in the universe, and further when the Nether was an exclusively hostile environment. Wandering traders are okay, if only 'cause they're so rare, but I still would rather they weren't comical ugly greedy big-nosed subhumans dependent on golems for protection. That was a bad move.
Hunger is a terrible system. Many people have gone in depth into just how badly Beta 1.8 fucked the game, so I'll keep this short: by adding hunger: passive mobs became persistent in order to facilitate farming; sprinting was introduced to provide a mechanical interaction between hunger and the rest of the game, which makes combat infinitely easier since you can outrun almost everything; it destroys the food resource economy by requiring players to eat continuously and in far greater than numbers than before; and it wrecks the previous balance between health and restoration and inventory slots available, because if food didn't become stackable it'd be impossible to carry enough.
This one's a little more subjective: there has been a near-exponential increase in the number of blocks and the number of non-full-block blocks (candles, banners, stoncutters, slabs, walls, fences, lanterns, chains, etc. etc. etc.) in the game since the Microsoft acquisition. It's easy to see this as a good thing looking at it from this side of the inflection point -- where it only means more fidelity and more freedom for high-level builders -- but my feelings are mixed. What is this, Blockland (2007)? The game has lost a strong, if low-fidelity visual identity in favor of a widening the gap between the ugliest and prettiest buildings. You have to pick a color palette now; unlike in, say, Beta 1.7, where every block fit into the same palette. If you wanna be good, you gotta learn to break up the shape your builds, rather than lean into the game's cubic nature. That's not per se bad, but I preferred the stronger visual identity.
I would like to have more things to put in my house beyond decoration. Enchantment tables, for example, were a great addition because they take up so much space. I want there to be benefits to building big houses! More crafting equipment! More workstations! Give me kinds of rooms to build!
Leather armor is a fucking joke with post-1.0 spawning rules. Nobody makes it, it's more tedious to acquire than iron (despite being worse), and it looks like crap. Making it dye-able was a good start, but I think ultimately it should either stop pretending to be armor in the first place, or it should be easier to get, like when it was made out of wool (and wool could be obtained by punching a sheep a single time).
Mining for ancient debris is such an insane chore that you'd think I was joking if I proposed it in 2019. The fun part of mining is the spelunking, not the holding click. So why is ancient debris only found at the ONLY level without caves IN THE CAVE DIMENSION? Quartz and Nether gold are fun to mine. Why can't ancient debris be fun to mine?
Furnace minecarts are pointless and everybody knows it.
Chest minecarts are pointless -- outside that one exploit where they can be stacked on a single rail -- and everybody knows it.
Nobody gives a shit about filler mobs like polar bears.
The Ender Dragon looks and moves like nothing else in the game. Is this a good thing? Maybe. It's very uncanny, very alien. Depends on your perspective on the game's artstyle, I guess.
Mining Fatigue is a baffling debuff and it makes ocean monuments a pain in the ass to loot. Nobody likes Minecraft's PvE combat, nobody likes Minecraft's underwater physics, and everyone dreads the ocean monument. Stupid fucking sniper fish.
I think it says something about the current creative direction that the number of songs in the soundtrack has doubled since the 2013 music update. The game that 'Key' was composed for is gone. Not A Value Judgement! That's what all the other list entries are for. Music just resonates differently when a game plays different. And the game plays different.

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XVI (federal 2025): Legalise Cannabis Australia
Running where: for the Senate, all six states and the NT; for the House, a smattering of divisions across NSW, QLD, VIC, and WA
Prior reviews: federal 2013, federal 2016, federal 2019, federal 2022, VIC 2022, NSW 2023, WA 2025
What I said before: “This is a single-issue party and their policy platform does not come close to providing a framework for addressing the bulk of parliamentary business. They’ve won representation in WA and Victoria, and in WA one of their two MLCs was suspended from parliament after spouting anti-vax nonsense.” (NSW 2023)
What I think this year: The quote above alludes to Sophia Moermond, who ended up quitting Legalise Cannabis WA and sitting as an independent because of her antivax, transphobic, anti-wind farm views. I reviewed her loathsome independent ticket for the 2025 WA state election here, and thankfully she just missed out on the last seat in the WA Legislative Council. I plan to post some thoughts about the Legislative Council outcome—announced last week—once I have completed my party reviews. The relevance here is that the calibre of candidates for single-issue micro-parties in general is very uneven, and that Legalise Cannabis in particular can be a real grab-bag with some decent candidates and a lot of questionable ones.
The party’s focus remains squarely on the legalisation of cannabis, not just for medicinal use but also for retail sale, subject to similar regulation as alcohol and tobacco. Indeed, they want it to be regulated more generously, “not subject to the ever-increasing levels of tax paid by consumers on [alcohol and tobacco]”, in the belief doing so would send consumers back to “the illicit market”. Why it’s fine to increase taxes on beer and ciggies but not on blunts is beyond me, especially as Legalise Cannabis in other policies emphasise the potential for taxation on weed sales to contribute to government finances.
As in previous years, Legalise Cannabis link all other issues such as the economy, law and order, and the environment back to cannabis, with rather sweeping and unsubstantiated claims about how legalising weed will result in positive transformation in these areas. I am in favour of the party’s main goal but there are other parties out there with much broader platforms who endorse this measure (notably the Greens). I think it far more sensible to support a party who can articulate why cannabis should be legal within a suite of policies and an ideological purpose that addresses the fullness of parliamentary business.
I urge caution when approaching Legalise Cannabis because of the issues with candidate selection. If you do not have any personal knowledge favourable towards an individual contesting an election on behalf of Legalise Cannabis, I suggest that you put them below more stable and known quantities on the left and centre, but above the Liberals and far-right minors. Kevin Bonham describes the lead candidate in Tasmania, Matthew Owen, as a disability support worker with a large beard (can confirm) but not much else of note. The b_auspol review for NSW suggests that the lead candidate there, Miles Hunt, is a pretty serious campaigner for drug law reform and harm minimisation. I’ll tackle three other lead Senate candidates below: VIC, QLD, and WA (and I imagine the Something for Cate blog will also touch on the VIC ticket when they review Legalise Cannabis). SA and NT voters, you’ll have to look after yourselves, and anyone with a Legalise Cannabis candidate in their local electorate ought to do a quick search to figure out where to rank them.
The lead Victorian candidate is the best known of the bunch: Fiona Patten of the now-deregistered Sex-cum-Reason Party (yeah I did that deliberately), whom I reviewed many times, most recently for VIC 2022. Patten was a member of Victoria’s upper house from 2014 until 2022 and proved to be a positive influence, promoting social reforms with a left-of-centre emphasis on civil liberties. My initial wariness that her party was a mere front to promote the interests of adult industry bosses wore off as her career progressed. Back in 2016, the Sex Party ran a joint ticket with the HEMP Party, the former name of the party before us in this review, so perhaps it’s little surprise that Patten is running for them after Reason’s demise. Victorian voters can comfortably include Legalise Cannabis in the upper reaches of their preferences in my view.
A much less meritorious candidate tops the Legalise Cannabis ticket in Queensland: Belinda “Bee” Jones. If you have spent much time on Australian politics Twitter in recent years, you likely know who Bee is. She exemplifies the posters derided as “drips”, mostly Labor sycophants, but as Bee shows, such accounts are not always rusted on to the ALP. She stood as an independent for the 2023 Fadden by-election, mistaking her Twitter following for a potential constituency in one Queensland electorate: she came sixth (of 13) with 1.05% of the vote. Now she’s fronting Legalise Cannabis. I strongly recommend that Queenslanders send their vote to other left/centre parties first. Bee has won one election though: a “worst of auspol tweets 2022 edition” account on Twitter ran a bracket where the final ended up being one of her tweets against another one of her tweets! The winner? Bee proclaiming that she tweets from 9am to midnight to “hold politicians/media to account” for free. She’s nothing if not convinced her incessant (bad) posting is political praxis.
In WA, Jason Meotti, who was sixth on the party’s slate for the state election, is top of the ticket for their federal tilt. He is a financial planner who took a leading role in the WA branch of the Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation and contributed to WA decriminalising possession of small quantities of cannabis for personal use in 2003. At that time, he was involved with the Democrats: he stood third on their WA ticket for the Senate in 2004, as well as contesting multiple state races between 2001 and 2005, including topping their Southern Metropolitan ticket in 2005. A Jason Meotti stood for Grey Power at the 1991 Geraldton state by-election but I’m unsure if it’s the same guy (he was in his early 20s then and surely a bloke that young wasn’t running for Grey Power?). One Twitter account also says he was once the vice president for WA’s Young Nationals but I am unable to corroborate this. I do not know of any association between him and the Drug Law Reform Party of the mid-2010s. He seems an OK choice based on what I’ve been able to find.
Recommendation: As a general principle, give Legalise Cannabis a middling preference. If the party is on either of your ballots, investigate the specific individuals as some might merit a decent preference while others should only get a weak preference.

also this was a million years ago (and by a million I mean two) so i don't know if you remember it, but I encountered an essay by Mariátegui where he argues that the Inca had communism despite living under a monarchy. that was from the third essay from Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality, "The Problem of Land" that seemed like it fit with what you've talked about where the Leninist definition of a state allows for absurd claims like "monarchy with a proletarian class character"
"Inca communism, which cannot be negated or disparaged for having developed under the autocratic regime of the Incas, is therefore designated as agrarian communism. The essential traits of the Inca economy, according to the careful definition of our historical process by Cesar Ugarte, were the following:
Collective ownership of farmland by the ayllu or group of related families, although the property was divided into individual and non-transferable lots; collective ownership of waters, pasture, and woodlands by the marca or tribe, or the federation of ayllus settled around a village; cooperative labor; individual allotment of harvests and produce."
Oh that was your?!
I'm so sorry that, because I'm shadowbanned, you might've not seen my initial reply, but I figure you're referring to this?
In any case, I think Mariategui, assuming that the quote is to be taken at face value with no added context, is wrong in calling it "communism" for a variety of reasons.
In all honesty, it is true that the ayllu is a communal, agrarian domestic sphere, but it's not communism.
Such kind of communal productive forces of society have existed proibably since time immemorial; the south american ayllu, central american milpas, the mesoamerican chinampas, north american owachira, the european commons, etc.
It should be better understood as a sort of rudimentary collectivism that was the base unit for other economic systems that could grow up from it, much like how Marx talked about the so-called "asiatic mode of production":
"Those small and extremely ancient Indian communities, for example, some of which continue to exist to this day, are based on the possession of the land in common, on the blending of agriculture and handicrafts and on an unalterable division of labour, which serves as a fixed plan and basis for action whenever a new community is started. The communities occupy areas of from 100 up to several thousand acres, and each forms a compact whole producing all it requires. Most of the products are destined for direct use by the community itself, and are not commodities. [..] It is the surplus alone that becomes a commodity, and a part of that surplus cannot become a commodity until it has reached the hands of the state, because from time immemorial a certain quantity of the community's production has found its way to the state as rent in kind. The form of the community varies in different parts of India. In the simplest communities, the land is tilled in common, and the produce is divided among the members. At the same time, spinning and weaving are carried on in each family as subsidiary industries. Alongside the mass of people thus occupied in the same way, we find the 'chief inhabitant', who is judge, police authority and tax-gatherer in one; [..] the Brahmin [..]; the calendar-Brahmin [..]. This dozen or so of individuals is maintained at the expense of the whole community. If the population increases, a new community is founded, on the pattern of the old one, on unoccupied land. The whole mechanism reveals a systematic division of labour [..] The simplicity of the productive organism in these self-sufficing communities which constantly reproduce themselves in the same form and, when accidentally destroyed, spring up again on the same spot and with the same name - this simplicity supplies the key to the riddle of the unchangeability of Asiatic societies, which is in such striking contrast with the constant dissolution and refounding of Asiatic states, and their never-ceasing changes of dynasty. The structure of the fundamental economic elements of society remains untouched by the storms which blow up in the cloudy regions of politics."
-Karl Marx, Capital vol. I, pg. 477-79, Penguin Ed.
and the corresponding footnote:
'Under this simple form . . . the inhabitants of the country have lived from time immemorial. The boundaries of the villages have been but seldom altered, and though the villages themselves have been sometimes injured, and even desolated by war, famine, and disease, the same name. the same limits, the same interests, and even the same families, have continued for ages. The inhabitants give themselves no trouble about the breaking up and division of kingdoms; while the village remains entire, they care not to what power it is transferred, or to what sovereign it devolves; its internal economy remains unchanged' (T. Stamford, Raffies, late Lieut.-Gov. of Java, The History of Java, London, 1817, Vol. 1, p. 285).
all emphasis has been mine.
hope this has been illuminating

Maybe a difference between magic and semblances?
So something people talk about pretty often is how, in aggregate, it doesn't seem like there's anything that magic can do that semblances can't do, making it unclear how the characters were convinced that magic was real by seeing Raven turn into a bird.
For a while the fandom went with the theory that transformative semblances weren't possible, but the writers debunked this in a Reddit AMA, and even before that Ruby's semblance letting her deconstruct and reconstruct herself on a molecular level as she goes between her normal and petal forms felt like a much more extreme transformation than turning into a bird. While not self targeting, there was also a character whose semblance turned things into gold permanently, showing that in general a persistent transmutation of matter was well within the capability of semblances.
This was something I was thinking about a while back, given the shapeshifting/mimicry semblance I received for my OC, since I thought it would be funny if she had the same "wtf" reaction to seeing someone turn into a bird despite what her own semblance could do. I do think I have something semi consistent, extending what we know about magic being usable indefinitely even without aura- magic can completely disrespect the conservation of "matter" and energy in a way that semblances can't.
I put "matter" in quotes because we already know from Ruby and the gold touch that obviously conservation of mass doesn't need to be respected at all and semblances are allowed to play fast and loose with the laws of physics in general- but in this case, there is still some form of conservation of matter: the number of moles (as in the SI unit for the amount of substance in chemistry) is still the same when these semblances are applied. Other semblances have the potential to violate this, but in turn may respect the conservation of mass or conservation of volume or such instead (e.g. I could see someone being able to turn into a misty version of themselves as a semblance, changing mass and amount but keeping volume approximately the same). Flint's clones do harm the consistency of this explanation a bit, though if it's a very costly semblance in terms of energy then it falls into the "fast and loose" range instead of "completely break 100%", especially since they only last as long as his semblance is active.
Turning into a perfect copy of someone else, down to personality, functional gear, and powers, is admittedly a pretty insane ability. But one thing about Iris's transformations is that her mass doesn't change, even if she's mimicking someone bigger and stronger than her. Though she copies their strength, her muscle mass won't match theirs, and instead her semblance increases the physical boost her aura provides to match, increasing the aura costs of an already aura-hungry semblance. In contrast, while turning into a bird isn't that crazy of a power, with this framework we can see that it doesn't care about any of those quantities in the slightest. All that matter? Just gone indefinitely, until you decide to create it again by turning back, all this without any energy cost at all.
With all that said, the characters were still pretty credulous to take Raven's transformation as proof- if something violates your worldview as extremely as "magic exists" does, you tend towards trying to figure out alternative explanations first, and "the bandits have someone with an illusion semblance" feels like a smaller leap than accepting that magic exists, especially since they wouldn't have all the details of her power. But, at this point, we can chalk that bit up to RWBY's writing being very focused on expediting characterization from point A to point B to keep the plot on the rails, rather than a gap in the worldbuilding.

I'm ill and not really good at words to begin with but. I think we should just hard reset the entire USA. Like burn the whole motherfucker down and start over. And here's what I would change personally
(readmore bc this is getting Lengthy)
- almost every state is its own individual country. It's too fuckin big and there's too many people for a central federal government to Work. I say almost because some of the really small states could clump together if they want idk I live in one of the bigger ones. In fact most physically large countries should probably do this
- likewise, the "union" of the state-countries should become like Europe where it regulates like. Travel and currency. And emergency wartime shit. Keep free travel open between the states like you can just cross most country borders in Europe
- if we MUST stay as a single country, COMPLETELY rework the voting system. Make it like Australia in particular that shit fucks severely. Honestly even if the states become their own countries we should do this.
- universal basic income. Like do I even need to explain this. Give everyone a basic livable wage that covers basic housing & food comfortably.
- shorter work hours. I'm not an expert but I think it's been proven that like a 5-hour 4-day work week would be just as productive or smth. Don't quote me on that one.
- ban private prisons. Like come on what the fuck.
- (ubi should cover prisoners too. Btw. And literally everyone else over 18. And ppl like 15-17 should start to get a smaller amount that goes into like a trust account that they can access when they're 18. just as a boost)
- COMPLETELY rework school funding oh my GOD what the fuck are we doing. Give grants to struggling schools and schools in poor areas. Abolish this "no child left behind" CRAP that incentivizes memorization over actual learning. MANDATE A HIGHER MINIMUM WAGE FOR TEACHERS.
- Actually tax the 1%. Also no one should be able to be a billionaire. Any income over like $10m (am open to constructive criticism on exact amount cap) should be taxed at 100%.
- universal healthcare. I will *allow* private hospitals to exist (for now) but EVERY state should have at least one easily accessible non-privatized hospital system where every individual hospital is a certain radius from each other so that p much everyone has access to it. The reason private hospitals COULD still exist is so that ppl could choose to pay a bit for expedited care if wanted. Open to constructive criticism on this one.
- decriminalize drugs. All of them. Rehab centers should be covered under universal healthcare too. People turn to drugs most often when nothing else is helping them - it's a systemic issue, not a personal failing.
- abolish student loans. Colleges should run on grants and donations. I shouldn't have to go into debt to learn, even if I just want to take a class or two a year. Also all textbooks should be available for free online, at least to students, or be available in bulk quantities in the library of any college that requires them for any course.
- decapitalize the Internet. It should be ILLEGAL for certain public websites (search engines, wikis, news, etc) to run ads. For websites like YouTube ads should be limited to like 5-10 seconds PER VIDEO.
- (also this isn't like a government level thing but they should totally bring back the branded game sites. Like the sites w barbie browser games n shit. That shit SLAPPED.)
- there should be both an increase in minimum wage and a cap on how expensive necessities can be. Things like bread, eggs, meats, locally growable produce, etc should be capped at a certain price point and not allowed to go above that point. This includes things like medications and menstrual products and also like condoms. "Luxury goods" (premade meals/snacks, coffee, alcohol, etc.) could be exempt from this. Open to constructive criticism on that.
- ban use of oil/gasoline wherever possible. Full stop. There's no fucking reason for it. Also power & water shouldn't be allowed to be privatized in any way and use of renewable energy like solar and wind should be mandatory. Also it should be free to everyone ever
- all companies and their products should be required to be under a certain carbon footprint/pollutant threshold. This includes limited or outright banned use of plastic products forever. We can find disposable alternatives that don't fuck us and the planet.
- nobody over like 60 should be able to run for office I'm fucking sorry but I'm sick to death of old ass motherfuckers running shit get outta here grampa no one likes ur policies
- medical euthanasia should be legal to perform but NOT legal to professionally recommend. Like a doctor can perform it but doctors and nurses cannot tell you that you should. It should also be regulated in some ways but I'm not about to get into that rn
- decriminalize sex work. Just. Full stop. People are gonna do it no matter what laws are in place, it's the oldest profession for a reason, decriminalize it and put in place laws protecting sex workers from abuse & exploitation.
- (obvs with above there should be SOME laws against specifically shit like performing sex work for/with a minor & other shit like that but that falls under "pedophilia is illegal" which like yeah good.)
- (on that topic though any CLEARLY DRAWN/NOT PHOTOGRAPHICAL porn REGARDLESS OF CONTENT should be fully allowed so long as it can e reasonably determined that no real life people were used as reference or could be recognized via the art. Like I'm Not Into even fictional children being in porn art but it isn't hurting anyone even if it's gross and I don't get it. Adults can to photo porn stuff as long as everyone's consenting tho)
- decensor the Internet. I don't care that there are children here. Sure you can have specific sites catered to children but they should not be allowed to have ads AT ALL (see "decapitalize the Internet") and anywhere not designated as specifically "for children" should be completely uncensored or have options to be completely uncensored. Make people parent their own fucking kids again.
- actual separation of church and state. If the only root argument in favor of a law or bill is "bUt ThE BiBlE" it should just be tossed full stop no exceptions. Also businesses and such should be incentivized to allow people of any religion their holy days off (unless no one is guaranteed to have their holy days off)
- On that note strengthen anti-discrimination laws. No one should ever be denied anything simply for their gender, presentation, religion, sexuality, race, etc.; this does not apply to any closed religious practices (where no one outside that particular religion is supposed to take part in a ceremony, style of dress, etc.) by any recognized nonprofit group.
- just give the native americans back their lands already. National parks should be allowed to be "maintained" (lived in) by indigenous people in whatever ways they want tbh. The only "rule" should be that visitors/tourists should still be allowed to enjoy the spaces so long as they are respectful of the land and the people. Humans are not inherently separate from nature.
- (if anything in the above point is worded badly I'm sorry once again I am The Sick and words are hard)
- work with Canada and Mexico on fully opening borders bc seriously what the fuck.
Idk I'm sure there's more I would change but I can't think of anything else right now tbh. But like to do any of those we'd have to completely uproot the entire system and I dont. Know how we would do that. without putting people through unnecessary risk. Idk I'm just fuckin weird rn

Let's talk numbers!

I will be ordering a crate of books which I will be signing and sending out from my house for the first orders; once I run out they will be mailed directly from the printer.
For When the War Ends, there are 16 books in a crate. (This varies based on page number.) One is going to be mine, since the proof copy I'm currently waiting on is for the last round of edits, and will get marked up a little.
So I'm thinking that the first 15 orders will include a bookmark? As like a special bonus?
If I am able to sell 20 books within the preorder period - well, actually by about 3/4ths of the way through, for shipping purposes - I can justify the expense of ordering a 2nd crate. In which case the first 25 books sold will include bookmarks, since they print in quantities of 25 at once.
So. If you want to order a copy of When the War Ends, while I'm happy to sell books any time, please consider buying during the preorder period, and if possible early in the preorder period, which is just the entire month of June.
I know a bookmark isn't anything, like, super exciting, but it's more exciting than just a signature on the title page, and it's something I can just slip into the book and not have to increase the shipping price because it no longer qualifies as media mail.
I have seven tentative designs - the difference is just in quotes included - and I'll put them up on Patreon for a vote. If I don't get a lot of feedback I'll also put it up for a vote on Tumblr. And maybe Instagram? You can do polls on Instagram, right?

On Methods for Gauging Reader Interest, because it's not just about comments!
Initially, comments and kudos are what matter most to me. Hits only show how many people click, so when I post a new fic or a first chapter, there's no way to know whether people stick around till the end unless they leave kudos or comment.
For fics with multiple chapters/installments, hits begin to matter as kudos dry up. You can leave kudos on AO3 once per fic. The only way to show extra support to a writer afterward is to comment on each chapter. But a lot more people are going to read than are going to leave comments. If you start looking at hits and thinking of them as little kudos themselves, that's something. Of course some of those people are still clicking and leaving without reading to the end. But it's safe to assume that enough aren't, especially if you see a similar or increased count of new hits each time you update.
Don't overlook bookmarks! If someone's bookmarked or subscribed to your fic, count it in your head as kudos. And don't forget that on AO3 you can have private bookmarks which don't show in the public bookmark count. Check your stats and you might find your fic is bookmarked significantly more often than it appears to be. (Also check what your public bookmarks are because sometimes people leave mini reviews in them and it's such a sweet surprise!)
All fics lose interaction relative to when they were published after they haven't been updated for a while. So if you want to know whether anyone's reading your "old" fic (in quotes because I find fics are treated as old pretty much as soon as they're completed and off the first page of results!), but kudos are rare and comments are rarer still: look at hits. Indulge in that wiggle of joy you get when you see there are people reading. It's not silly to do that. That's a person who noticed your fic and was interested enough to open it.
While comments will always give the biggest serotonin boost for most of us, I think that a lot of the reason we don't feel the same towards hits is simply because they're not comments. We've programmed ourselves to see certain forms of interaction as more valuable. But if you think about it, fan art here on tumblr gets a lot more likes than it does reblogs or comments. Likes on tumblr can mean you liked the art, or you're bookmarking it for later, or even that you don't like it and are planning to rant about it. Plus people can revoke Likes any time they want, which you can't do with comments or kudos.
Likes are the bare minimum for interaction tumblr, and hits are the bare minimum for AO3. Art will still have more, because it's quicker to take in a picture than it is to read even a short fic, and easier to make a judgment on whether or not you enjoy it. But the value of that interaction isn't necessarily different if you equate likes to hits. In both cases, comments and shares occur less. Interaction is largely wordless - that's just how it is. But that lack of words doesn't mean lack of interest. You've got to arrange your mentality to interpret the coded message.
This may sound like a case for quantity over quality, but that's not my intention. I know as well as any fic writer how a joyful comment can power me through the whole of the next chapter, while posting and not getting any response for weeks can feel like I might as well give up and become an accountant. :P But it's completely out of our control. And it's better to focus on what you can control than what you can't.
"I don't get enough reader response" is a common refrain which I've heard since I posted my first ever fic as wide-eyed eleven-year-old. Over the years, I found that my reliance on comments dropped as I came to value other forms of engagement more highly, as I think they deserve to be. It doesn't mean I don't still adore my commenters, it just means I am more aware of my quiet readers and adoring them as well has done wonders for my confidence as a writer :)
#fanfiction#not that anyone asked for this post but its a saturday and im feeling chatty#ao3#writing

emma goldman quotes that go hard as fuck and that i might use as my thesis epigraph:
“If I were to give a summary of the tendency of our times, I would say, Quantity. The multitude, the mass spirit, dominates everywhere, destroying quality. Our entire life--production, politics, and education--rests on quantity, on numbers. The worker who once took pride in the thoroughness and quality of his work, has been replaced by brainless, incompetent automatons, who turn out enormous quantities of things, valueless to themselves, and generally injurious to the rest of mankind. Thus quantity, instead of adding to life's comforts and peace, has merely increased man's burden.”
“There is no greater fallacy than the belief that aims and purposes are one thing, while methods and tactics are another, This conception is a potent menace to social regeneration. All human experience teaches that methods and means cannot be separated from the ultimate aim. The means employed become, through individual habit and social practice, part and parcel of the final purpose; they influence it, modify it, and presently the aims and means become identical.”
“Our institutions and conditions rest upon deep-seated ideas. To change those conditions and at the same time leave the underlying ideas and values intact means only a superficial transformation, one that cannot be permanent or bring real betterment. It is a change of form only, not of substance...”
“Those who are placed in positions which demand the surrender of personality, which insist on strict conformity to definite political policies and opinions, must deteriorate, must become mechanical, must lose all capacity to give anything really vital… everything that strives for new form, new expression or new values, is always doomed to be untimely.”

just want to clear a few things up, since i keep seeing screenshots of that same tweet floating around.
all other things being equal, a us-made iphone could cost up to around $3,000. the problem here is not primarily one of labor cost, but of expertise. the forbes article quotes apple ceo tim cook:
There’s a confusion about China… the popular conception is that companies come to China because of low labor cost. I’m not sure what part of China they go to but the truth is, China stopped being the low labor cost country many years ago and that is not the reason to come to China from a supply point of view... the reason is because of the skill… and the quantity of skill in one location… and the type of skill it is. [...] In the U.S. you could have a meeting of tooling engineers and I’m not sure we could fill the room. In China you could fill multiple football fields.
the article goes on to explain that:
Foxconn employs over one million workers [...]. The consumer electronics supply chain migrated to Asia three to four decades ago and rapid procurement of components is critical to cost, time-to-market and ability to scale. Logistics and infrastructure are also key for a product that is shipped around the world — seven of the world’s ten largest ports are in China.
the point is that regardless of cost, the iphone (or any other smartphone for that matter) would be impossible to manufacture in the us at the current scale.
Theoretically, if Apple were forced to manufacture only in the U.S. I certainly believe we have the capability to eventually re-build the technical skills required to do this. [...] To really get this done right, we would probably need to re-design much of our public educational system to look more like Germany’s where students start moving down the vocational path during high school. This is a pretty massive undertaking to say the least. [...] Even if we were to start today, it would take an entire generation to really scale this up. In the meantime, using the existing scarce resources (sub-optimally) my guess is that we could initially produce a few million units per year [...]. (emphasis mine)
production in the us would be so slow that the product's scarcity would drive up the price.
So forcing Apple to manufacture only in the United States means that in a best case scenario you probably go from the ability to produce hundreds of millions of iPhones per year to producing single-digit millions per year at a much higher per-unit cost. This is a two order-of-magnitude difference. While the production costs would undoubtedly be significantly higher, Economics 101 tells me that the biggest driver in the price increase would be the supply curve shifting waaaaaaay to the left resulting in a massive increase in the equilibrium price.

In this theoretical world, where only 1% of the population could have an iPhone (and assume alternatives don’t exist for now), the cost would skyrocket. Not only can the 1% afford to pay significantly more, the iPhone would turn into an ultra-luxury item and just look at the order-of-magnitude price difference between say a Birkin bag and a Coach handbag — price differences in the 30–100x range. In iPhone terms that would bring us to prices in the $30,000 to $100,000 range. In other words, the price increase is driven almost entirely by artificially constrained supply in the face of overwhelming demand as opposed to rising per-unit production costs. (emphasis mine)
It seems that your cheap phones are not a god given right but actually a luxury sustained by imperialist inequality after all. Mirá vos.

Construction Cost Estimator Sydney: How Much Should You Expect to Pay?
When planning a construction project in Sydney, one of the most important questions is how much you should expect to pay for a construction cost estimator. Understanding the fees involved helps you budget appropriately and ensures you receive value for your investment in expert estimating services.
Factors Affecting Construction Cost Estimator Fees
The cost to hire a construction cost estimator in Sydney varies based on several factors. These include the size and complexity of your project, the level of detail required in the estimate, and the estimator’s experience and reputation.
For smaller residential renovations or extensions, fees tend to be lower since the scope is more straightforward. Larger commercial developments or multi-stage projects typically require more comprehensive estimating work and thus carry higher fees.
Common Pricing Models
Estimators may charge fees in different ways:
Fixed Fee: A set price agreed upon before the work begins. This is common for clearly defined projects.
Percentage of Construction Cost: Some estimators charge a percentage (often between 0.5% to 2%) of the total estimated construction cost.
Hourly Rate: Charging by the hour is sometimes used for consulting or when the scope is uncertain.
Per Square Meter: Occasionally used for residential projects where size is a key factor.
Each model has pros and cons, so it’s important to discuss and clarify fees upfront with your estimator.
Typical Fee Ranges in Sydney
For residential projects under $500,000, expect to pay roughly between $500 and $1,500 for a detailed cost estimate. For commercial projects or larger builds, fees often range from $2,000 up to $10,000 or more depending on complexity.
Keep in mind that an accurate and professionally prepared estimate can save tens of thousands in unexpected costs later, so this should be viewed as an investment rather than an expense.
What’s Included in the Cost Estimating Fee?
A typical construction cost estimator fee usually covers:
Reviewing design documents and specifications
Researching current local costs for materials, labor, and equipment
Preparing detailed itemized cost breakdowns
Including allowances for contingencies and site-specific factors
Revising estimates as designs evolve
Assisting with tender evaluation or budget updates
It’s important to ensure your estimator’s scope of work matches your expectations.
Are There Additional Costs to Consider?
Some projects may require specialized estimating services such as quantity surveying, value engineering, or ongoing cost control during construction, which could involve additional fees.
Also, if your project requires multiple estimate updates due to design changes, this might increase the overall cost.
How to Get the Best Value From Your Estimator
To get the most value, choose an estimator with local Sydney market knowledge and relevant experience in your project type. Clear communication about project scope, timelines, and deliverables will help avoid surprises.
Request detailed proposals from several estimators, comparing their fees, services offered, and turnaround times.
FAQs About Construction Cost Estimator Fees in Sydney
How much does a construction cost estimator cost for a small renovation? Typically between $500 and $1,500, depending on complexity and required detail.
Is it cheaper to get an estimate from a builder instead? Builders can provide quotes but may not offer the independent, detailed analysis a professional estimator provides. Estimators help ensure transparency and unbiased cost evaluation.
Why do fees vary so much between estimators? Experience, reputation, methodology, and project complexity all influence fees. Highly experienced estimators may charge more but provide more accurate and comprehensive services.
Can I negotiate the cost estimating fee? Yes, discussing your budget and needs upfront often allows for a tailored service and possible fee adjustments.
Does the fee include revisions if project plans change? This depends on the contract. Some estimators include a limited number of revisions; others charge extra for major updates.
Conclusion
Understanding the costs involved in hiring a construction cost estimator in Sydney is key to making informed decisions early in your project. While fees vary, choosing a qualified estimator with local expertise can save you significant money and stress by providing realistic budgets and preventing surprises.
View the cost estimating fee as an investment in your project’s financial success. By budgeting appropriately for professional estimating services, you ensure greater confidence, transparency, and control throughout construction.

How to Get the Best Price on High-Quality Custom Prints
Whether you’re a business owner, event organizer, or just someone who loves custom designs, getting the best price on high-quality custom prints is all about striking the right balance between cost and quality. Smart planning and the right partners can make all the difference in ensuring your custom printing project is affordable without compromising on style or durability.
For those seeking custom t shirt printing in chennai, this guide will help you make cost-effective decisions without sacrificing the premium look and feel your brand or event deserves.

1. Choose the Right Printing Method for Your Budget
The method you choose for printing can significantly impact the overall cost. Not every project needs the most expensive printing process; the key is selecting the one that matches your design and order volume.
Common printing methods:
Screen Printing – Ideal for large quantities and simple designs.
DTG (Direct-to-Garment) – Perfect for detailed, multi-colored prints in small batches.
Heat Transfer Printing – Cost-effective for short runs or one-time events.
Sublimation – Great for all-over prints but best suited for polyester garments.
Example: A Chennai-based startup reduced its cost per unit by 40% by switching from DTG to screen printing for their bulk promotional campaign.
Partnering with professionals in custom t shirt printing in chennai ensures you get expert advice on which method works best for your budget and design.
2. Buy in Bulk – But Smartly
Printing in bulk almost always reduces the cost per piece. However, overordering can tie up your budget unnecessarily.
Tips to get the best deal:
Get quotes for different volume tiers (e.g., 50, 100, 250 units).
Plan ahead for future events or promotions to combine orders.
Use pre-orders to estimate demand before committing to large quantities.
Stat to consider: According to a 2023 industry survey, bulk orders of over 100 units typically reduce costs by 20–30% compared to small batches.
Working with a reliable custom t shirt printing in chennai vendor helps you get volume discounts without the guesswork.
3. Optimize Your Design to Save Costs
Complex designs with multiple colors, gradients, or small details can increase printing costs, especially with screen printing or heat transfer.
Cost-saving design strategies:
Limit your color palette to 2–3 core colors.
Avoid fine text or intricate details that require high precision.
Use vector graphics to ensure print-ready quality.
Real-world example: A local NGO simplified their 5-color logo into a 2-color version and saved 25% on their overall printing budget.
For effective custom t shirt printing in chennai, simplifying your design can mean better results at a lower cost.
4. Compare Quotes and Ask the Right Questions
Not all printing services are priced equally. It pays to shop around—but more importantly, know what to ask.
Key questions to ask:
Are there setup or design fees included?
What type of fabric and print durability can I expect?
Are there discounts for recurring orders or referrals?
Pro Tip: Get itemized quotes so you can compare apples to apples.
Trusted vendors offering custom t shirt printing in chennai will be transparent and happy to walk you through their pricing.
5. Leverage Seasonal Offers and Promotions
Many custom print vendors offer seasonal discounts, especially around festivals, college admission seasons, or New Year promotions.
How to take advantage:
Sign up for newsletters or follow local vendors on social media.
Time your orders during off-peak periods.
Ask about early-bird or bulk booking incentives.
Expert insight: “We often offer 15–20% off for clients who confirm their orders well in advance,” says a senior print consultant at a leading custom t shirt printing in chennai provider.
