“Why Did I Want To Be A Solo Traveller? What Are The Useful Tips For Travelling Alone”—The Most Respectable Travel Expert Rebecca Lee (李樂詩) Is Content With Her Graceful Solitude.

Some said the most important thing in life is to enjoy uneventful simplicity. Beauty can be found in things that are unadorned and uncomplicated. I disagree and tend to support what the most respectable travel expert Rebecca Lee (李樂詩) in Hong Kong has said, “Nature had 4 seasons—spring, summer, fall and winter. Each has its own light, temperature and weather. Life is nature. So, do great things when you are young. At my age of almost 80, the beauty of life is about happiness which is not related to contributing or achieving anymore. It is about how we treat ourselves.”  

Our story is a chain of experience, bitter or sweet, each one of which makes us bigger. Rebecca smiled, “My ‘quota’ has been filled. I stop travelling and adventuring. Hong Kong is my little resting corner. I found peace with myself.”  

Rebecca is charming, witty, straightforward, and unpretentious. She came from a middle-class family in Central. Her father ran an ivory products shop on Queen’s Road, Central. Her schooldays were the most artistic time of her life: painting, writing, photography and playing harmonica. She laughed again, “I dreamt of travelling. I looked at the maps and told myself: I had to go here and there.

After she graduated in 1962, she found a job: artist in an advertising agency. Rebecca said, “The money earned could enable me to travel. I wrote and took photos. I published to share.” Within a few years, Rebecca was able to run her own design studio with her ex-husband Robert Lam . She sighed, “The marriage did not work well. I am glad to be a single and free person now. I don’t need a man to rectify my existence.”

Rebecca continued, “Later in life, I got the contract to take care of the inflight magazine Discovery of Cathay Pacific. I enjoyed immensely the creativity of being the art editor of such a good travel magazine. I was lucky. I got a career that I enjoyed and something that I was interested in. Following this project, I published my own magazine called Pearl Magazine. I put a strong point on the magnificent history, heritage, culture and geography of China.”  

She paused, “There came a point in my life when my mind told me that enough was enough. I did not want to run a business anymore. I desired to be a full-time journeyer. So, after some years, I closed down my business and searched the world which did fill me with happy treasures. Pacific, Atlantic, Indian and Arctic oceans were learnt. Asia, Europe, Africa, Antarctica, Australia, North America and South America were studied. Experiencing different customs, traditions and artistic performances of other races helped me gain a profound appreciation about human cultures. I have become more open-minded, empathetic and thankful.”   

I asked, “How do you define the meaning of money?” She replied, “Money is only a tool. Money never makes a person happy unless he or she knows how to use it correctly. I used money on travel. The real measure of our wealth is the depth of our knowledge, experience and happiness derived from the world.” I deliberately challenged, “Can we learn about a country or place by watching TV and online programs?” Rebecca pretended to frown and said, “You can but it is not good enough. Humans have 5 senses: taste, smell, vision, hearing and touch. The real world allows us to satisfy all the senses. Imagine: when you stand next to a jungle, you delightfully encounter its temperature, humidity and scent.”   

I questioned, “You often travelled alone. Did you feel lonely? She laughed, “What? A ‘solo trip’ is the best thing on earth: being both physically and emotionally away from the people and the situations that we are too familiar with. Solitude is independence; and independence is the richness of self.” She chuckled, “Besides, I do not like serving others. Social interactions often come with chores which may mean extra obligations.”    

I asked, “What is your advice for other solivagants?” Rebecca lowered her eyebrows, “Life can be tough. You keep only the necessary and give up the unnecessary. As a solo traveller, I cut my own hair. I need no face cream or makeup. I have only a few sets of clothes. I eat anything. My daily food can simply be a loaf of bread. I can sleep on the deck of a ship. Simplicity is making your journey with just baggage enough. Fewer possessions mean fewer distractions and as a result, you can focus on the beauty of nature surrounding you.”    

My curiosity drove me to put forward my final question, “Is it safe for a lady to travel alone?” she winked humorously, “At least safe for me. You look at me. My look is universal and unisexual! It is a kind of protective camouflage!”   

Rebecca concluded, “Dream is everything. You, at the end of day, are what you want yourself to be. I have finished my to-do list: I was a photographer, a writer, an editor, a businesswoman and a travel adventurer. At my age, humour and contentment are a great tonic for mind. I don’t expect or wait for anything. My happiness comes from a relationship with what I can have and enjoy that to the maximum. I don’t think I am alone in this.”    I wish I could go back in time. I wish I could tell my younger self to correct some mistakes so that I could lead a wonderfully colourful life like that of my idol Rebecca Lee. I suddenly think of a song “When I’m 80”!

I'm a very, very small artist myself, and maybe I'm super naive about all that and it's just not possible but if it is, do it. It's the only way out.

Beneath the Orphanage

That day me and my followers hiked to about 100 yards away from a building which we thought is the Orphanage building.

Not all the people in my country-side have the same thoughts as me about the orphans. There are people doesn't allow the orphans to be at the public places. Example: If those people see orphans in the public places, then those people would raise their voices at those orphans to go away.

In addition, there are people who doesn't show sympathy by thinking it is very sad seeing the orphans watching other children's parents buying ice creams for those children.

There are days I couldn't stop myself having thoughts about why I'm being haunted by ghosts at the nighttime? Why I have nightmares all the time in my sleeps?

Cruel Country-Side Activities: Putting salts on snail. Putting firecracker inside ant's hole. Watching my older brother eating cricket.

Rebellion Argument: I started the rebellion force in my country-side. The most beautiful and beloved baby broke Scorpion's nose in the Empty Handed Combat fight.

Life Is Suffering Argument: This argument is my parents knows I'm suffering. If they wanted to end my suffering, then when I'm sleeping at night they could use a pillow and put it over my face. And, suffocated me to death.

I puts it at: Me and my followers stopped at 100 yards away from the orphanage building. Because the thought of the most beautiful and beloved baby became an orphan make me sick to my stomach.

What is beneath the orphanage? Why are those ghosts haunt me at the nighttime? Why do I have nightmares all the time in my sleeps?

What beneath the orphanage is related to those ghosts and nightmares.

I didn't think too much about it. Me and my family speak a Chinese Province dialect that I don't know the origin. The country-side I live in is in Vietnam, but we are not speaking the Vietnamese language. I'm writing this healing process in the English language.

Even though, I asked my parents multiple times about the foundation that made donations to our country-side. But, only the parents and adults get to have those donations. Example: Those donations are distributed to the families in our country-side, but only the parents and adults get to go collect those donations.

In the dictionary, the words, American Red Cross mean help. The symbol, Red Cross is universe to mean help and hospitality.

Like I wrote above, me and my family speak the Chinese dialect. So, it is told to me in Chinese dialect. Also, I'm 6-7 years old, I don't have a lot of power.

Later on in my life, during my high school years at around 2000. I try very hard to find time to trace the origin of the Chinese dialect I speak by traveling to China. But, in China, I didn't have enough time to find it.

So, I been telling myself that those foundations that made donations to my country-side is the American Red Cross foundation.

Around 2010, Rebeca Karcz, club vice-president of Mesa Multimedia Club and me walking at the swap meet (like a Block Party). For years, because of being club president and club vice-president, me and her have got into debates about how to find the most affordable ways to live each day. Because of these debates, so it make us look really poor.

So, she bought a cotton candy in the swap meet. Then, she peel off a few pieces for me.

Her mother is a nurse at one of the swap meet booth. So, her mother gave me a vaccine shot for free. That vaccine shot usually cost around $10-20 at the nurse office in the Mesa college campus.

Anyway, that day been going so well so far. I don't have to spend any money. I have a great time with her. Before leaving the swap meet, I hurried over the American Red Cross booth and put 1 dollar into the donation box.

Back to my country-side. My whole life I been telling myself the American Red Cross foundation made donations to my country-side. That is why I needed to put that 1 dollar into the donation box in the American Red Cross booth.

Does the donations matter to the children in my country-side, since only the parents and adults could collect those donations?

It is hard for me to says the following:

I'm those children leader. I should give me and those children some encouragement about facing the problems in our life. Also, give us positive thoughts about life. Yet, I'm confuse or I don't know what to says about the overwhelming odds.

I keep thinking that the American Red Cross foundation will make donations to save us. But, did I translated the Chinese dialect to English language correctly, it is called the American Red Cross?

Even if I got the name correctly, only the parents and adults get to collect those donations, so if I tells those children to relies on those donations could be argued as I'm giving those children false hope.

What happen with my parents, why did my father beat up my mother like that?

Will the most beautiful and beloved baby going to save us all from what beneath the orphanage including ghosts and nightmares? Could the most beautiful and beloved baby save himself?

Generation Gap

Rich Older Brother In Hong Kong

In "Night Life in the Country-Side", I wrote the following: "Story Time Custom: People gathered around my house front yard to listen to my father telling stories during the day time."

Many of those stories my father told are stories about his Hong Kong trips.

Even though, the packages that he brought back from his Hong Kong trips already enough proof about his Hong Kong trips. But, there multiple times his son (my older step-brother) and adopted son would return with him back to our country-side.

I'm going to try to spell out their names using the Chinese dialect pronunciation. My older step-brother is On. On is 20-30 years older than me. I don't remember my older adopted-brother name. For now, I'm going to call him as Ken. Ken is 15-20 years older than me.

Ken is a heavy weight that is over 6 feet tall. He is the most heavy and tallest among my brothers, step-brothers, and adopted-brothers.

So, my father put Ken to be in charge of watching over the luggage in the airport.

This is Ken first time in Vietnam, so he followed my father's order and watch over the luggage, but he didn't expected Vietnam to have so many thieves.

As my father step out of the Vietnam airport. He slapped Ken on the head. "What happen to your hand bag?" Ken shook his head when he saw his hand bag got cut.

Minutes later, as another thief grabbed another bag from the luggage. Ken grabbed the collar of that thief. Then, he took the bag back from that thief. Then, he let that thief go.

My father told that story of how Ken caught that thief many times in the Story Time Custom. My father could tell that story better than me.

Whenever Ken is around, he would usually carry me on top of his shoulders. Also, he would play with me and our 2 brothers, Ho and Du. My father would tells me and my family that On and Ken is rich in Hong Kong. So, if me and my family need anything, then On and Ken could buy it for us.

To me, I like it when On and Ken come to my country-side, because they play me and carry me on their shoulders.

On is the oldest brother. Also, he is the boss in Hong Kong and China. My father told our family the story many times how On went from a struggling importer (or smuggler) teenager boy (around 12-13 years old) to a rich boss in Hong Kong and China.

Even though, my father didn't says you could go from poor country boy to become as rich as On someday. But, I think he telling us those stories about how On becomes a rich boss. He is implying that me, Ho, and Du could be like On someday.

My father is 50 and more years older than me. On and Ken is 20 and more years older than me. So, I think there is a generation gap. Also, I'm around 7 years old, so I don't have a lot of power.

During each visit, On stayed in my country-side for around a week. Ken stayed in my country-side for around 3 weeks.

In my country-side, I sees that in each families, there is usually a husband and a wife. So, it is a bit strange to me when I found out that my father have multiple wives.

Because On is my older step-brother. This mean On's mother is my father second wife. My mother is my father third wife. I didn't ask my father if he have any wives that he didn't went through marriage.

Consultant Meeting

It is the third world country. It is in a strange place. It is a country-side close to the forest. I'm going to keep it at the following:

On the surface, the argument is I'm the most beautiful and beloved baby who lived a rich life comparing with other children.

Beneath the surface, I would argues I'm not that much different than those children in my country-side. Me and those children come up with recreation activities to play. Wanting our country-side to be like a playground.

But, I'm obligated to showing leadership and maintaining my image as the most beautiful and beloved baby. In addition, I'm being haunted by ghosts during the nighttime and having nightmares all the time in my sleeps. Also, there are generation gap and multiple wives in my family.

On top of all of that, my father favorited me as his favorite son among my brothers, step-brothers, and adopted-brothers. There is the following question: How could a poor country boy be compared with On who is a rich boss in Hong Kong and China?

Yet, in this strange place, my father have brought some inventions, developments, and productions to this strange place. Example: He gathered people together to build a homemade basketball court. Put together a low-production movie theater. And so on.

In addition, I heard that he is a Chinese Chess Champion in my country-side. What else have he not accomplished in his life?

Furthermore, he started to have "Consultant Meeting" in our house. It is usually in the living room. The way I sees it. It is very important and high priority meeting. There are 4-6 people including my father in that meeting. Those people must have high rank positions. This mean those people have a lot of wisdom and power.

I would argues this "Consultant Meeting" is a generation gap, because I'm around 7 years old, and I don't have a lot of power.

One day, as I'm walking around the living room at a far distance from the "Consultant Meeting". He called me to come over to his meeting.

For good habit practice, in the morning, I would brew tea. Then, place a cup of tea at each of the altars around our house. There are a total of 4 altars . 2 altars inside our house. 1 altar in the backyard and 1 altar in the front yard. The way I see it calling it as a tea ceremony is easier to understand for people who are not familiar with the buddhism faith. I would argues placing those cups of tea at the altar to honor the gods. In return, the gods might protect me from the ghosts haunting me during the nighttime. Also, maybe I might have fewer nightmares in my sleeps.

Anyway, I thought that maybe he is calling me over to brew tea for the guests. Or, a simple demonstration of mannerism.

When I got next to him. He asked me if I wanted to join the meeting. My thoughts are I'm 7 years old and I don't have a lot of power. My followers are all children who have lesser power than me.

But, I couldn't help it to have the following thoughts: Ever since I have been having followers following my leadership I'm lesser afraid of the dark places. Ghosts haunting me during the nighttime. And, the nightmares in my sleeps.

This is something I’ve seen a lot and I’ve also joked about a lot but after SotR I just need to clarify my actual thoughts on this topic: Snow’s “twink death” and his inability to let go of, what was essentially, a month long relationship.

The thing is, it’s not Lucy Gray that he’s holding a grudge against… it’s her lifestyle. He got to experience first hand, the freedom and self-assurance that groups like the Covey generated for themselves. He saw Lucy Gray run off into the woods, swim in a lake, sing and dance with her peers, all after a game that should’ve destroyed her spirits - because that is the point of the Games. To have a sole surviving reminder of why the Capitol is in control. To send back one “victor” who every district hates because the person standing in front of them is taking their friend/child/sibling/cousin/partner’s spot. To completely dismantle that person’s ability to cope with the world the way they used to and to have them beholden to the Capitol for “awarding” them with riches. They’re supposed to serve only as a reminder, a threat, a shell of a person who is visibly hollow and tarnished, hated by many, feared by some and pitied by few.

Lucy Gray is not that shell. Lucy Gray, therefore, serves as a constant reminder to Snow of what should not be happening to those who get to leave the arena. The more he takes command of the Capitol and the Games, the more the “mistakes” of the Games stand out to him because his benchmark for measuring them is Lucy Gray.

Keep in mind that the 10th Games were also the first time he got to see from the inside out. He saw what pissed off the tributes. He saw how they were transported. He also saw how the public reacted at the home district. Lucy Gray had nightmares, sure, but her ability to re-mingle with her friends was a failure of the Capitol. He saw the need to maintain a constant difference between “victor” and “friend”. He saw the need to put them on tours so that the divide and distance grows. He saw the need to be able to broadcast every aspect of the Games without having to constantly be frantically cutting the feed or very obviously fixing the narrative, because that was yet another failure of the system the Capitol was trying to enforce.

This becomes so clear in SotR when he has his talk with Haymitch and realises that the Lucy Gray spirit he has been trying to squash is still alive. Not only that, it’s infectious. It can take someone like Haymitch, someone who is very well pressed under the Capitol thumb, and spark a fire inside him. The colours of the Covey, the singing, it doesn’t just represent Lucy Gray, it represents aspects of freedom that shouldn’t exist. Even him saying:

“You love her. And oh, how she seems to love you. Except sometimes you wonder because her plans don’t seem to include you at all.”

Is so telling because he can’t fathom that a person in the districts could have the independence of thought to do whatever they want. To him, she should be desperate to go back to the Capitol with Snow to get a chance to live the dream that they’re trying so hard to sell, but obviously failing.

So no, Lucy Gray isn’t just the girl he couldn’t get over. She’s the girl that serves as a warning, as an abomination of the purpose of the Capitol. As his personal blueprint of what should not be repeated ever again.

Azriel arched a slow, painfully unimpressed brow. His gaze flickered to your current position: fully draped over him like an overeager blanket.

"Really?" he drawled.

You swallowed. "Okay," you admitted, "this is exactly what it looks like."

A choking noise came from somewhere nearby.

The roar of his laughter shattered the silence. His wings flared as he doubled over, hands on his knees, absolutely howling.

Mor collapsed against Rhys, wheezing.

Rhysand sighed through his smirk, shaking his head. "Well, I suppose congratulations are in order."

Azriel was still beneath you.

My head grew heavy especially the back of my neck. You might be someone who needs a LOT of time to recover after each social gathering. You see people for who they are and you know who is a narcissist or who is NOT and when you see that someone is not good you avoid them at all costs. I see that you feel isolated and you blame that on spiritual awakening but deep down you know that you have felt misunderstood so much now you feel jaded of relationships in general. But despite all that terror that you have gone through you still have hope, you still believe that life goes on. You still think that like will be better one day. I got the lyrics from lana heroin "Life rocked me like Mötley, Grabbed me by the ribbons in my hair, Life rocked me ultra softly, Like the heavy metal that you wear" though in her lyrics it wasn't something soft at all. I see that you are still emotionally reactive and this thing is stopping you to look at things more rationally, your reactions are driven by emotions. Now I'm not saying you need to fix it, just be aware that if you are under 25 it is normal to be this way, you brain didn't develop fully yet. I see that you are juggling a lot mentally. I see that you have been hurt A Lot in the past especially from your family.

3. Your future self:

After 5 years you'll be in a better place and you know that. First you'll be healed a lot from the past and you'll be more able to forgive your family and parents. I see that you'll struggle to be more social in the future which is okay, if you still doubt that you can handle relationships. If you are considering a relocation I'm not seeing it might happen because you'll be kind of confused where or how to start. Or you might be kind of.... not sure where you want to go and this will keep you stuck in your place. I see that your past disappointments will still be in your chest. But the way you deal with them will be different. Especially on how you handle your sadness. I see that in the future you'll be more stable financially. I see a big girl job and big girl money is waiting for you. I see that you might get a raise in your salary or become a manager of some sort or an HR. Your relationship with yourself and others will be more balanced than now. You might find a couple of people who will meet you where you want but believe me it'll be worth it. I see that in the future you'll be busier and you might struggle to balance your work life and personal life. You'll be more confident and you might come off as blunt or rude to some people. Your physical appearance will be more sexy and beautiful. You'll get a sexy boost or something. And finally karma will be on your side. Now I'm not seeing any marriage or life partner after 5 years for you but remember that this is a general reading so take what resonates and leave what doesn't.
