🍄 but can we head your more cynical takes?
sure, why not! out of the frying pan and into the fire /silly
🍄: what’s your hot take about american girl?
i guess my number one hot take about the brand is that i’d rather the brand completely die than continue to be kept afloat by adult collectors who do not seem to understand that a) their nostalgia is being manipulated for profit and b) ag is basically not relevant to kids.
i cannot emphasize enough, as someone who works with kids, this brand has nothing—and esp when it comes to the historicals. there is a reason why ag books are being weeded from libraries and disappearing from bookstores (such as b&n, who used to have a HUGE ag section and now i’m pressed to find more than a singular ag book at the stores near me in an area that should be the target demographic for ag). kids aren’t playing with dolls at the ages they once were, and kids aren’t reading in the way they once were.
this isn’t fully the brand’s fault, but they are very much aware of this, and so they are willing to string along a bunch of adult collectors who can and will shell out insane amounts of money for products of decreasing quality, all while thinking that the next heyday of american girl must be juuuust around the corner.
idk i think there’s something really repulsive about how a brand that was supposed to teach history to girls (in a way that was really vibrant and alive, and that centered girls so much that we had a momentary boom of women entering the history field) has turned into a nostalgia cash-grab that centers adults as the consumer, and i would literally rather the brand die than keep this up.

What game were you playing?
It's called The Roottrees are Dead.
You're a geneologist who is contacted after a devastating crash kills several members of this billionaire family called The Roottrees. A mysterious person gives you a huge list of names and asks you to complete a family tree, with a particular emphasis on blood relatives.
You have a basic 1998-era computer with a search engine, library access, and a periodicals database, and you have to figure out what to search and how to link clues to form a family tree.
This is an example of the notes I was keeping the first little bit of the game. You can see how webby it gets. You have to search anything mentioned- companies, books, movies, magazines, they all lead to more information. Hell, the co-stars in shows and movies lead to other connections on the family tree.
Tumblr media
#a good example is that one of the names you're given is like lauren roottree#and you find out by searching her that she's an author#so you swap to the library tab and search all of her books under both last names#and find a special edition of one book that has a photo of her you inventory#and then it mentions her father was this one roottree#and on page 6 of random excerpts she mentions 'uncle jr'#so you know one of her uncles names has a 'jr' in it and you can look at the master list of names#and find a roottree with 'jr' in it#but you also have to know on the family tree where he fits in age order among the 5 kids of that generation#certain other names and keywords lead you to a book about the history of candy#and an ad for it from the 1930s where they say the 5 flavors were inspired by the 5 children#each sharing an initial with the kids#you use those first letters to narrow down the list further and get them in age order#or you have this dude having an affair with this girl#but he has 4 ex wives#so you see a mention of later in his life#his daughter#and by her last name you know like on the family tree there is only one wife with 2 children and so that must be the affair girl#because the girls have her last name#and you have to find names; professions; and photos for all of them; with bonuses for finding their spouse names#so... yeah#it's really hard to stop once you've started#but I locked in 18 entries on the family tree- i expect another handful to lock in very soon#so i made a list of keywords to search off of when i resume playing#ask

Things that irritated me about A Witch's Ally: Building A Magical Relationship With Animal Familiars & Companions by Dodie Graham McKay:
despite how good it was going until that point, the shoe finally dropped on page 50 with some Lilith bullshit (including the debunked Sumerian relief misinformation)
I am redacting a point for numerous editing mistakes
and the misuse of "shaman" in witchcraft spaces is still very apparent in this book
Things I liked about the book:
there was a decent disclaimer at the start
Kelden, who wrote the foreword, seems to know their shit and gave in-text citations (which I adore)
the introduction gives background on the author for this book without taking forever
more importantly, the rest of the introduction gives an overview of the books parts and expectations
the author clearly defines what she means by pets, animal companions, animal familiars, and non-animal familiars from the get-go
there is a whole section about not using the term spirit animal followed by a section of alternatives that actually discusses the nuances of each word
the author uses they/them pronouns for a generic witch figure
there are in-text citations for nearly every historical claim
the author points out that most victims of the witch trials were likely not actual witches but instead drawing on what was either fed to them by their torturers or pop culture superstitions about witches at the time
the history section is incredibly thorough and nuanced
the author encourages an ethical approach to animal use/inclusion in magic without being overly-pushy, including an entire chapter on the legality and ethics of animal parts
there was also a great "respect animals" talk on page 58 and an anti-appropriation one on page 74, I just wish the latter had been more thorough
overall the book is incredibly practical, pragmatic, and common sense-driven
I had my coworker who uses essential oils fact-check the essential oils section and her verdict was that it looks good overall and checks out in my coworker's experiences and own research
greatly appreciate the mention of what's toxic for pets and the repeated stressing of the fact that just because something is natural, that doesn't mean it's safe
there's a realistic approach to spell consequences on pages 157-158 instead of an overexaggerated "a money spell will kill your relatives so you get your inheritance" bogeyman
incredibly thorough bibliography
In addition to that, I appreciated the animal keywords list on pages 54-55. I do not have the knowledge and experience required to verify the bone cleaning instructions in the animal parts chapter. And the death and mourning chapter tore me the fuck up.
Overall, 9/10 book, it's very good for being what it is.

Marcille Revealed in Five Keywords
5 keywords section from the Adventurer's Bible, this is transcribed from the EHScans translation for more info you can check this post. My own notes will be at the end of the post. All of these have spoilers btw
1. Family
Marcille's mother is an elf, and a mage currently employed by the royal court. Her father was a tallman who conducted historical research at the royal court. Marcille's father fell in love with her mother because she had personally experienced all the things in the history books he was studying, and he started making his moves at age 15. This continued until they married when he was 32. After he passed away of natural causes, Marcille's mother remarried to a gnome, and moved away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Incidentally, Marcille had a pet bird named Pipi when she was younger. The reason why she wants to eliminate the differences in lifespans between the races is largely due to the impact experiencing the deaths of her father and Pipi had on her at a young age.
Tumblr media
2. Half-Elf
Born from a union between an elf and a tallman, Marcille is a mixed-blood race known as a half-elf. The reason why she kept this fact hidden from those around her was not due to an inferiority complex; rather, she felt that explaining her whole background would have been a hassle. By the way, one unique characteristic about half-elf ears is that they are slightly more rounded than elf ears.
Tumblr media
3. Honor Student*
Marcille enrolled in the Magic Academy as a researcher. There, she conducted research behind factors causing sickness and injury; she was also involved in the creation of new healing magics. Marcille also was able to learn all the spells she used in the dungeon in a single day this required rather extensive knowledge and technique. Sadly, her party members are unable to comprehend how truly impressive this feat was.
4. Ancient Magic
The reason Marcille studied ancient magic was in order to eliminate the differences in lifespans between races. However, as ancient magic is also used to summon demons, ancient magic spells are considered taboo and its usage is heavily regulated.
5. Romance Novels
Marcille is a romantic type at heart, and is an avid fan of "The Daltian Clan"** series of romance novels. She's also constantly engrossed in the details of other people's love lives. When the party was attacked by succubi, Marcille's taste in beauty was put on full display; it's likely that the succubus' appearance was heavily influenced by her taste in romance novels.
Tumblr media
------
*It's translated as Honor student in the official english but Marcille is not actually a student but a researcher (as the description says) EHScans translated it as "Academic Prodigy" but the original text is "優等生" which as far as I can tell does directly translate as "honor student", my guess is that it means she's good at studying/learning, because it would be weird to actually mean a student at the school since it's specified that she was not actually a student in chapter 57. She says "私は生徒じゃなくて研究者だからね" (not a "student/pupil" [ 生徒 ] But a researcher [ 研究者 ] )
**EHScans translates it as "D'Arcian Clan" but I decided to edit it to match the official english "Daltian Clan" just for consistency, since that's how it's referred to in this blog.

Want to read the IDW run of tmnt, but confused by the reading order and don't want to spend money? Below is a list of everything in order, with links to library resources (primarily Hoopladigital and ComicsPlus, which are free with a library card at participating libraries) and physical book titles you can search in your library catalog! Happy reading!

I just abbreviated it to keep the list tidy ***I'm not going to link ComicsPlus because it requires a library-specific url to actually work. Also their availability sometimes changes. I will occasionally include a search keyword because the ComicsPlus search is funky ****Mega deep library tip: see if your library does Interlibrary Loan through WorldCat. You might have to talk to a librarian and/or fill out a special request form. But the complete IDW collections could be available that way if they aren't in your regular system. I was even able to get vol 14, which is currently out of print.

hey! u seem like u’d be a good person to ask, a few of us are working on a modern medieval style herbal and i’m trying to track down mentions and depictions of specific plants in old illuminated texts… do you have any tips for the search?? So far i’m searching thru individual databases belonging to different collections, image by image, and i feel like there’s gotta be a better way
hi! this is genuinely a hard task and i feel like the way you're doing it is already kind of the way to go? the one central database of illuminated manuscripts doesn't exist, and most library collections barely provide descriptions for the illustrations contained in their manuscripts. the british library used to have a fantastic image search function, but that's gone since the cyber attack in 2023.
what i would do if i was you is create a list of illuminated herbals by using various databases as well as scholarly works like Minta Collins (2000): Medieval Herbals. The Illustrative Traditions (at the end of collins' book there's an index of all the manuscripts she cited). when you make your list, always name the library + shelf mark + ideally include a permalink to the digitized manuscript. once you have the list, go look at the digitized herbals and see which ones are useful to you, i.e. which ones contain image descriptions and the plants you're looking for etc.
some useful databases for your purpose: Biblissima // Digital Bodleian // Heidicon // KdiH
for the iconographic history of individual plants you might find useful articles (with images) in the Reallexikon zur Deutschen Kunstgeschichte (RDK Labor)
most of the databases i just listed are french or german, so the keywords you search for need to be in the right language. many of them can also be quite tricky to navigate. imo, biblissima (french) will be both the easiest to navigate and give you the best results.
there might be much more useful resources for herbals in particular, but i'm not an expert on the topic at all. afaik, something like the medieval bestiary but for plants/herbals doesn't exist yet :/

Armin Week | Day 3 | SFW Prompts | Nerd Armin OR Exploring the Outside World
Tumblr media
word count: 737 warnings: none author’s note: if my teammates found out i simped about asana online, they’d chop my head off, but it’s not my fault asana is such a useful and cool app, yk??
@armin-week-2024
─── ・ 。゚☆: .☽ . :☆゚. ───
nerd!armin carries his books around everywhere and i mean EVERYWHERE, you can never catch him not reading something, even when he’s out for coffee, he’s either reading, studying or taking notes on something
i feel that he prefers subjects that can spark moral or philosophical questions, not that he dislikes sciences or anything, but he finds subjects like latin and history more thought-inspiring (is that a word?) like you can read this very old piece of literature and talk about it, analyse for hours, compare it to how things are today on so many levels, these classes are giving him braingasms or something
nerd!armin keeps his glasses in his front shirt pocket. he used to hang them on the hook of his jeans or in his back pockets, but he kept either crashing or loosing them
he also pushes his glasses further up the bridge of his nose only using one finger
nerd!armin is the kind of guy to touch his forehead with his fingers and rub the area when he’s really concentrating or when he’s trying super hard to understand something
nerd!armin has the softest hands, i know he does! his hands are clean and tender, though his fingertips might display some paper cuts. when he pulls all nigthers in order to study, you'll simply know it because there's blue ink all over the side of his palm
he’s also the type of person to always have headphones on so his studying isn’t interrupted
whenever you come across nerd!armin he’s surrounded by various pieces of paper, how he manages to keep them all in organised stacks is truly a mystery
listen to me, nerd!armin is colour coding his notes, i know it in my bones
nerd!armin notices you but pays little attention, he just knows you’re a regular at the library and/or the study hall, but knows next to nothing about you
you approach him once and ask for his help, as you shared a couple of classes. in fact, this was only an excuse to talk to him, you really needed no help with the material. he took his headphones off, listened to you very carefully, asked a couple of clarifying questions, then brought out a fresh sheet of paper and started writing down a few keywords, as he explained to you what you already knew
“whoa thanks armin! that was so enlightening! fancy pairing up for the next assignment?” but your question was never heard, as armin had simply said “you’re welcome” and then popped his headphones right back on, the cue to leaving him alone
nerd!armin is definitely not mean or rude, but he enjoys his silence and has trouble working when interrupted, you know?
when you meet nerd!armin again after a few days, he waves hello and gives you an awkward smile before sitting right opposite to you on the library table. “mind if i sit with you?” he asked, to which you quickly responded with “not at all”, gave him an equally awkward smile and you both buried your heads in your books and notebooks
nerd!armin is so taken aback when, a few hours into your studying, you extend your hand towards him to give him a small chocolate. without removing his headphones, he pointed to his chest “for me?” and once you nodded, he ate it in a quick motion, because eating wasn’t allowed in the library
the next day, nerd!armin sits opposite of you in the library again and gives you a piece of chocolate as well. “it’s not like the one you gave me yesterday, but i hope you like it”
nerd!armin soon went as far as to exchange phone numbers with you, now you text a few times each day, mostly about the exact time you’d be at the library, how you did on this or that exam and whether you’d read that book he’d recommended
i think nerd!armin might ACTUALLY fall in love with you because you introduced him to asana and/or notion, these apps were second nature to you but armin mostly used his notes app or google sheets and the apps you showed him changed his life
a couple weeks later, nerd!armin texted you to “come over on saturday, let’s finish the politics assignment together?”
“sure but don’t try anything funny on me”
“now you know the objective of the mission “study date” WHO RU WORKING FOR???”
nerd!armin is probably more than meets eye

[Image above: D. T. Suzuki (11 November 1870 - 12 July 1966) was a Japanese Buddhist scholar and doctor of literature. ]
A message from 23 nights temple Q&A: Part 2 [Part 1]
Next question was, want to know more about Tendai Buddhism and how to do face-to-face learning outside of Japan:
More than 1,400 years after its introduction, Buddhism in Japan was born from the founders of sects in Japanese history and culture. Today, about 13 major sects exist, including the Tendai sect. Of these, three are Zen sects: the Soto, Rinzai and Obaku.
Among them the most representative are, Saicho, founder of the Tendai sect, whose head temple is Enryaku-ji on Mt. Hiei; Kukai, founder of the Shingon sect, who brought esoteric Buddhism to Japan, whose head temple is Kongobu-ji on Mt. Koya; and Dogen, author of the Shobogenzo, a philosophy book said to be a manual for Zen meditation practice and originator of mindfulness. Founder of the Soto sect, whose main temple is Eiheiji Temple.
Buddhism means 'Buddha's teachings'. In the beginning, everything was transmitted orally and it was only after Buddha's death that documents and scriptures were created. All of the Buddhist scriptures that remain today were described by the memory of Buddha's disciples. In the meantime, it underwent various transformations through the views of translators and other factors, and representative gurus from different countries established and divided into sects. The Tendai sect is one of these sects, founded by Master Saicho. Incidentally, my trusted teacher is a Zen monk of the Soto sect, and he says that one should not be confined to a sect. It is because Dogen, the founder of the Soto sect, taught that the Buddha's teaching is one and that we should not be obsessed with sects.
Those wishing to study face-to-face or Buddhist thought outside Japan should visit your local Buddhist temple or Zen centre. You can easily find one by hitting the usual keywords. However, not all are good teachers. It is recommended to search patiently for a teacher or centre that suits you. For international learners, books by Japanese Buddhist scholar D.T. Suzuki are relatively accessible. He wrote on Zen in English and introduced Japanese Zen culture to the rest of the world. He was also a prolific translator of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese and Sanskrit literature.
In fact, the teachings of Zen that we are learning are not like there is a holy scripture that says this is the absolute truth, nor is there a founder who says that this is the absolute truth.
And it is best not to decide on a teacher based on sect or culture, but to knock on the door of a person you can identify with. More importantly, he or she may not only be in the temple.

Good Omens Fic Rec: Truth or Dare
"And what happens if we don't carry out the dare? What's the penalty?" If he was going to contract with a demon, he had to be sure of terms. After all, Crowley could ask for… anything... Crowley smiled, all sharp eye teeth. "Knowing the other one won." Crowley and Aziraphale play truth or dare through the centuries.
Length: 12,411 Words AO3 Rating: Explicit/ Spice Level 🔥🔥 Best for/Keywords: Safe in Public, Book Omens, Through the Ages Major Triggers: None

*Minor Spoilers* A Book Omens fic for you! How neat is it that we can so easily swap between Book/TV versions and have them match so well? The characters are so strong that you can picture them however you want and it'll always be recognizably them.
This one plays on the idea of them playing Truth or Dare throughout history. I love this game for them, it plays beautifully into who they both are. Stubborn, competitive, secretive, unable to let things go. Both of them want so badly to tell their Truths, to give in to desire or vulnerability. But they won't. They both love to flirt with the edges, but they'll always turn back to repression and avoidance. The game they're playing is fun, but also has a lot to say about their relationship and characterizations.
This is a very interesting and clever story. I loved all the historical scenes and how rich the history felt. It really fits well into Good Omens canon, especially in dialogue and prose. Everything about it works so well! Safe in public, there is a short semi explicit scene right at the very end but it should make for a great read wherever you are!

can u talk a bit more about working as a bibliographer? like what does that actually entail?
so the bibliography i worked at was affiliated with the major academic professional society of my subfield, and the society sponsors the bibliography as a kind of sister publication to their journal. this means 1) we were almost exclusively grant-funded, and 2) the staff positions at the bibliography go to grad students. there are jobs in bibliography and related information sciences that are not exclusive to academics/grad students, but i can't really tell you anything about them personally; i had this job as a graduate research assistant (ie this was what i did to get my paycheck for two years instead of TAing).
anyway the purpose of a bibliography like this that's affiliated with a journal or subfield is usually to aggregate data on what's published in that journal or subfield. ours was aimed at capturing the whole subfield. so, the bulk of the staff job is to comb through recent academic publications (journal articles & books) and pull anything that's topically relevant. we add the abstract and metadata to the bibliography (meaning basically a searchable database) and then we do subject tagging. this is the most fun part because you have to think about how knowledge is categorised and what's most useful to a user and whatnot.
so like let's say i'm entering an article from the journal of the history of psychiatry. i already pulled the metadata from the online journal listing and put it through zotero, which then talks to the bibliography's back end. i do the authority control (link it with the author's other publications in our bibliography, and with some external identity profile like viaf or orcid). i link it to the journal in our database and make sure it has the right date, page numbers, etc. this article is about philippe pinel, so its main category tag is probably 'psychiatry - 19th century'. then i aim for 5–10 additional subject tags, maybe 'france, metropolitan', 'psychiatric hospitals and institutions', 'therapy and therapeutic methods', 'philosophy of medicine', 'nosology and diagnosis', 'pitié-salpetrière hospice', etc.
once this is all entered, the article is searchable by any of its metadata, by going to the author's profile in our database, or by those subject and category tags. institutions (universities, libraries, hospitals, etc) all have their own authority controls too. you can browse the database by data, by subject tag, by searching keywords, etc; it also has a few visualisation tools that show strongly associated subject tags, histograms of a person's or publisher's history of publication, etc. this all means that things are more easily discoverable than they might be, and once you've found them you can also browse related things easily, or look at some provisional info on the state of publications in the field.
because this bibliography was affiliated with a journal, we also used to publish a yearly print edition with the entries published in the last year (this was satisfying to hold but honestly way less functional than the online database version lol) and we also published a special edition of bibliographic / historiographic essays on pandemics that i worked as managing editor for. idk how common this would be at other kinds of bibliographic job positions; we used the same publisher as the sister journal, so mostly all i had to do was correspond with people and deal with typesetting. anyway once that was published we also added those articles to the bibliography itself too.
anyway super fun job tbh, like a lot of it is data entry but haggling over subject tags was honestly enjoyable if you like that kind of thing. i lost the battle to add "total institutions" as a subject tag but won when i said we needed to revamp our system for entries dealing with weight management; as a result those subject tags are now clearer and more useful, and capture scientific discourses about both 'underweight' and 'overweight'. our best tag imo was "controversies and disputes", which was like a catch-all for any time there was some kind of haterism in the literature. it kind of changed how i view knowledge categorisation (like, the process; philosophy-of) and because we spent so much time reading abstracts to tag them, we would basically have walking encyclopedic knowledge of recent publishing in the field.
some of this functionality can ofc be replicated in library catalogues or google scholar or whatever, but the real value-add is the subject tagging and the relationships between those terms; this is where the bibliography is useful both for finding things and for showing an additional layer of information about the field and publishing in it. lots of academic fields have some equivalent of this, although i will say that our database was generally better (in the sense of more data and useful detail) than others i've used; it was a well-funded project run by a very dedicated prof who's been doing this for over 20 years now, and that continuity and institutional memory is really paying off for it.
but yeah if this is generally something that interests you, like i said, this is really just one specific form of bibliographic work. definitely look into what else is out there (i dunno how much of this would require a degree like an mlis even) and see what you think :)

Ok switch a loop AU, Would Odile in one Loop, just convinced the party to stop and just try to read every book in the house? They can just loop back if anything happens, and have all the time in the world. This way, they'll have more informed or clue on what's going on.
Honestly, yea...
I think they would try that while trying to get more information on all the possible history and craft books. I think it would be a cute loop!
Odile would be the one to drive the exploration, taking all the notes she can. She would get a little annoyed at the others. But she would relax and enjoy everyone's help.
I think that Isabeau would also prove extremely helpful in noting possible info! He would be shy about it at first, but then he'll go full nerd mode because man did he miss this! He and Odile would definitely bond during this loop.
Mirabelle would try her best, but would get overwhelmed. She take some brakes to gather her thoughts. I think she is a slow reader and a big thinker. She is worried that she's not contributing as much, but she is the head of discussions! Some people work better with talking than notes!
I dont trust that Bonnie would do any reading. They would supply the snacks to the notetakers. They would probably enjoy it more if the House had any cool books. Though, I think they would try to start reading "The Cursing of the Château Castle". Keyword being try...
I would imagine this being maybe before Siffrin learning to read his language. I think he would still have fun. They would read some plays, entertain Bonnie a bit, and take some naps! They have been doing that more often these loops..
Overall, I think this could be a cute character moment for them! Thanks for the idea!
