Navigating Intellectual Property Rights and Startup Ecosystems: Insights and Opportunities
In today's rapidly changing business landscape, understanding intellectual property rights (IPR) and the dynamics of startup ecosystems is essential. This blog explores the basics of IPR, the importance of startup ecosystems, and offers insights from experts.
Understanding Intellectual Property Rights Intellectual property rights safeguard creations of the mind, enabling inventors and creators to control and profit from their innovations. Here’s an overview of key IPR types:
Patent: Grants inventors exclusive rights over a product or process for 20 years, allowing them to commercialize their innovations without competition.
Utility Model: A technical solution to a problem, requiring novelty and industrial applicability. Essential for incremental innovations.
Industrial Design: Protects the ornamental or aesthetic aspects of a product for 5 years, preserving its unique appearance.
Trademark/Service Mark/Word Mark: Protects the identity of goods and services for 10 years, helping brands maintain their market presence.
Original Works: Protected for the creator’s lifetime plus 50 years, ensuring long-term benefits for creators and their heirs.
Insights on Startup Ecosystems Speaker: Keren Happuch A. Lacadin
What is a Startup? A startup is a project with high scalability potential, aiming to solve problems with innovative solutions, like Airbnb and Grab.
Criteria for Startups:
Project: Initiatives like sulit.com.ph aimed at solving specific problems.
Scalable: Potential for rapid growth, similar to Airbnb.
Non-Obvious Solution: Unique solutions exemplified by Grab.
Differentiating SMEs and Startups:
SMEs: Market-proven, linear growth, traditional business plans.
Startups: Disruptive, exponential growth, single-page business model canvas.
Defining a Startup Ecosystem A startup ecosystem consists of people, startups at various stages, and diverse organizations in a location, interacting to create new companies. It includes both physical and virtual interactions, fostering innovation.
Key Startup Statistics:
Global Snapshot: Most highly valued unicorns worldwide.
Best Countries for Startups: Sweden, Norway, Israel.
Philippine Startup Ecosystem: Ranked 59th globally, 13th in Asia-Pacific, with over 100 startups and a $3.05 billion valuation.
Innovative Startup Act - RA No. 11337 Supports startup development through various programs and policies.
Philippine Startup Development Programs:
Support R&D
Promote Access to Programs
Participate in Local and International Events
Support Collaboration
Develop Policies
DSDAP (Digital Startup Development and Acceleration Program): Includes Scale, Raise, StepUp, Startup Grant Fund, and Startup Philippines Website.
The Role of Technology "Technology gives a silent student a voice," highlighting technology's transformative power in enabling innovation and communication.
Exploring Incubation Programs and Opportunities Speaker: Glyrhiz Mariel A. Tabamo
#ParaSaMindanao and #ParaSaBukidnon Focus on incubation programs and opportunities for startups in Mindanao and Bukidnon.
Entrepreneurial Life Speaker: John Ryan Loyloy
Sir Ryan’s initial advice was not to try business, which intrigued me. He shared his challenges as a young entrepreneur, facing skepticism from potential partners due to his age and lack of experience. Starting and growing a business involves:
Idea Generation
Skill Development
Financing
Building Strong Connections
Lifestyle Adjustments
Handling Depression and Rejection
Overcoming Financial Struggles
"Failure is part of success," struck a chord with me, as it emphasized that failure is not a reason to give up but a sign of areas needing improvement. Mr. Loyloy’s question, "Why do we fail?" reminded me that failure is part of life, inspiring me to pursue my entrepreneurial dreams.
Conclusion Understanding intellectual property rights and startup ecosystems is crucial for innovators and entrepreneurs. Insights from experts like Keren Happuch A. Lacadin and Glyrhiz Mariel A. Tabamo highlight the differences between SMEs and startups, the importance of robust ecosystems, and the promising Philippine startup scene with substantial government support. Entrepreneurial experiences shared by John Ryan Loyloy underscore the need for resilience and continuous learning. Leveraging available resources and support systems is key to navigating the business landscape. Embrace the journey, with its challenges and triumphs, guided by expert insights to achieve your goals in business and innovation.

A Glimmer of Hope
Juggling school, academics and a social life can be exhausting. With so much going on, it can sometimes feel like there’s never enough time to pursue your passion and reach your entrepreneurial goals. However, the speakers at the recent lecture series held on May 8 offered a glimmer of hope. They shared insights and tips that prove it's possible to pursue your passion for entrepreneurship, even with a packed schedule.
Experts from the start-up scene talk about their experiences, share their advice and focus on exciting entrepreneurship topics. Dr. Dumancas talked about keeping your ideas safe, comparing it to having a secret code to protect them from being stolen. She explained patents (like secret codes for inventions), trademarks (shields for your brand), and copyrights (guards for your creative work). Ms. Keren Lacadin talked about how startups work, saying they're like small projects that can grow big if they solve problems in new ways. She gave examples like Airbnb and Grab to show how startups can become successful quickly by being creative and solving problems people care about. Then, Ms. Glyrhiz Tabamo explained how programs help new businesses, especially in Mindanao. Highlighting it's important to support entrepreneurs and help them succeed. The fourth speaker, Mr. John Loyloy, shared his own experiences of starting a business, emphasizing the challenges and rewards of entrepreneurship. He showed that with hard work, anyone can turn their idea into a successful business.
All throughout the lecture, I've learned how to protect ideas like keeping a secret code safe, understood that startups are like small projects that can grow into big businesses if they solve problems in new ways, discovered the value of support programs like getting a boost from friends when needed, and heard real stories of starting a business from someone who's been there, showing that with hard work, anyone can make their idea into a successful business.

Lecture Series: Intellectual Property, Start-ups, and Entrepreneurship
I recently attended a series of lectures that covered important topics like intellectual property, start-ups, and entrepreneurship. In this blog, I want to share what I learned from each of these lectures and how they helped me understand the business world better.
The first lecture taught me about the importance of protecting our ideas and creations. I learned about a famous example of a picture that was copied from a convenience store's logo; this is especially relevant in light of the viral picture of the "seven ebelen" whose face was copied from the 7-Eleven convenience store logo. which showed how easily someone's work can be stolen. I learned the importance of registering a business idea or product to safeguard it from intellectual property theft. By registering, you can secure your business idea through various methods like copyrights, patents, or trademarks. This can provide legal protection and recourse in case of infringement. It's crucial to take these steps to protect your business idea and any unique elements associated with it. This lecture made me realize how important it is to understand the laws that protect our intellectual property.

The second lecture was about the world of start-ups. Ms. Keren Happuch A. Lacadin shared her knowledge about the different people and organizations that help start-ups grow, such as investors, mentors, and government agencies. I learned that start-ups need a supportive environment to succeed, and that working together with others is key.
The third lecture was about the different programs that help start-ups grow, such as business incubators and accelerators. Ms. Glyrhiz Marhiel A. Tabamo taught me about the resources available to entrepreneurs and the importance of seeking guidance and support when starting a business.
Tumblr media
The final lecture was a personal story of success and failure shared by Mr. John Ryan Loyloy. He taught me that failure is a natural part of the entrepreneurial journey and that we can learn from our mistakes. His message was inspiring and reminded me that perseverance and adaptability are essential for success.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
The lecture series was a valuable learning experience that helped me understand the business world better. I learned about the importance of protecting our ideas, the support system needed for start-ups, and the resources available to entrepreneurs. Most importantly, I learned that success and failure go hand-in-hand, and that we can learn from our mistakes.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to have learned from these experienced speakers, and I look forward to applying these lessons in my own entrepreneurial journey.

Activity 6-Blog 3
In the GEE 16 lecture series, three speakers discussed intellectual property, the startup ecosystem, and the startup journey.
The first speaker discuss the Intellectual property rights (IPR) safeguard creators' original work like inventions or art. Technology transfer shares knowledge or tech between parties, aiming to boost innovation and economic growth. It involves patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets. Benefits include economic development, fostering innovation, and promoting collaboration. Challenges include negotiating agreements and protecting sensitive information.
The second speaker discuss the Startup ecosystems are networks supporting new ventures, varying in structure and resources. Key factors include access to capital, networks, and knowledge, crucial for scaling operations and success. Incubators, accelerators, and public sector support play vital roles, offering resources, mentorship, and infrastructure. Balancing risk and innovation is essential. Understanding these factors is crucial for fostering innovation and economic growth.
The third speaker discussed the startup journey of Virtualahan, detailing its inception, challenges faced, and development. Virtualahan is an organization that focuses on providing employment opportunities for persons with disabilities through online work and training programs. They began their journey by identifying the need to bridge the gap between job seekers with disabilities and suitable employment. Challenges they encountered likely included societal stigmas, accessibility barriers, and the need to build a supportive and inclusive workspace.Their development involved creating innovative solutions to address these challenges. This might have included implementing specialized training programs, establishing remote work environments conducive to diverse needs, and advocating for inclusive employment practices. Over time, Virtualahan likely grew by expanding their network, forging partnerships, and continuously evolving their programs to better serve their mission. The speaker's example of Virtualahan's journey highlighted the resilience, innovation, and commitment necessary to overcome challenges in creating impactful and inclusive startup ventures.

childhood bestfriend!kaiser who specifically always demands his managers to reserve a spot for you at every single one of his games.
you always go to support him, with him insisting he needs you there as some sort of “lucky charm” (he won’t actually admit he thinks those superstitions are bullshit), so imagine his shock when he finds out that your seat is empty on the day of one of the most important games of the season—the game that will decide who gets to compete in the german cup.
it’s ten minutes before the game starts and despite his coach’s pep talk to the team, all kaiser can focus on is your empty seat and the absolute betrayal you’ve bestowed upon him, your supposed “best friend.”
he hasn’t realized it—nor will he admit it if he ever were to come to such an epiphany—stubborn as he is, but the reason as to why he does so well in games that you’re present at is because of the fact it gives him more motivation to win and impress you rather than just solely being dependent on the faces of despair from his opponents. a unique sort of euphoria that he gets whenever he can spot you jumping up and down in your seat with his number #10 jersey on, that your praise belongs to him and him only.
so when he steps out on to the field and sees that your seat is still collecting dust, he seethes silently to himself, gritting his teeth, pissed that he even called you his best friend to begin with. because what sort of friend doesn’t show up to one of the most important games in germany’s football?!
he’s still planning to win, of course. he’s michael kaiser—he’s famous for doing so. and he plans to use all his rage that you’ve caused to do so, just in spite of you.
because he’s michael kaiser, number ten of bastard mündchen. he doesn’t need your help. he never did.
(see, what he doesn’t know is that you’re simply home sick with a cold and that you’re still dressed in his jersey, just also with a sweater and bundles of blankets on top to stay warm, but regardless, you’re still watching and cheering him on from behind the tv screen. you’ve sent him some texts and voicemails telling him so, but none have received a reply back yet and you can only imagine what this drama queen has in store for you once he wins the match.)

BIG BOSS LADY
( obasi is a woman and butch lesbian that uses she/her & he/him ! )
some doodles of obasi with her coat, though admittedly, as impressive as her style is, her coat is like a shadow that still cascades her…
some additional yap about this is in the thread under the cut + bonus backstory doodle 🦍
⚠️TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️
obasi’s lore is reflective of some of my own experiences, which includes child abuse/neglect and cptsd. please proceed with caution and stay safe ❤️
Tumblr media
mind my very incorrect grammar here lol
dubaku never wanted to be a parent, he enjoyed the illusion of parenthood, but after he lost gabi (obasi's mother), he realized how little he truly cared for family. much like how he raised obasi, he was raised to see family as something dangerous and draining, a chore more than love. so when obasi was born all he could think of was the blood he would shed for her that he did not want to shed. dubaku never wanted to be a father.
he didn’t want the life of a crime lord and he most certainly did not want a child to go along with it. he knew that in raising obasi, he would have no choice but to work until he died, so he chose to be miserable. he chose to hurt his daughter. he chose to make obasi feel all that pain and anguish in every neglectful action towards her.
obasi loathed dubaku as much and he loathed her, and in the end, she did not loathe him as much as she thought. in the end, dubaku is still her father and a part of her wants to love him, and that’s why she wears his coat when she grows older. his coat is the last semblance of some kind of love that vanished the moment she was thrust into his shadow.
deep down i think there’s still a child in obasi that wanted to see dubaku as her father and not a role to follow, she wanted to love him as family and not loathe him for the successful crime leader that he was. she wanted to carve her own path but had no choice but to follow his. and now, by the time the events of the main story happen, she’s about the same age her father was when he was murdered, and she’s filled the shoes she was destined to fill. but at what cost?
obasi’s coat is ultimately symbolic of the hatred, neglect, and pure malice that shaped her childhood. it represents how she is so deeply tethered to an instinctive love of her family but simultaneously, a boundless hate.
she wears her father’s coat like she wears her past upon her shoulders.
anyway im just tweaking over my own oc lore huzzah

I'm updating my personal ref sheets and it's really hitting me just how SMOL Kirby, Bandee, and Elfilis really are compared to the rest of the cast.
#Elfilis! standing on your tippy toes is cheating!!#its okay tho on all fours you're like a little house cat compared to Dedede hehehe#here's a bonus story for anyone nice enough to read my tags#I'll tell the cliffs notes version of the story I drafted of why Gorimondo is so much taller than the other Beasts#especially when comparing Gori to the Mookies (the little hammer monkey enemies)#It involves him exploring a forbidden ruin with Sillydillo#and finding an experimental growth serum in some abandoned school chemistry lab#Gori was the shortest of everyone growing up so he's self conscious about it#Silly can read enough “Forgotten Language” to pick out the word “grow” and eggs him on to try drinking it#and they're like teenagers at that point so Gori just shrugs and tries it and nothing happens.#fast forward a year and he doubled in height#NO ONE KNOWS why he shot upwards like that except for Silly. he doesn't want to be lectured about drinking strange potions in the ruins#the rest of the beast council friend group just assume he was a late bloomer of some kind or he just increased his exercise routine#but when kids ask him why he's so tall Gori just says he ate all his vegetables and always listened to what his parents said#the kiddos in Wondaria were very well behaved after he told them that#the end! thanks for reading hehe. if you could only see my notes on the Beast Pack#their personalities are so basic in canon I get to squash and stretch their backstories all I want muahaha#art#forgotten land roleswap#roleswap bonus features#king dedede#meta knight#elfilis#kirby#bandana waddle dee#kirby and the forgotten land#kirby series#kirby comic#beast pack#clawroline
