The Issue With Solarpunk Gaming

Alright, another week for talking about Solarpunk. And this time about Solarpunk and Lunarpunk games. Because, look. I think no other Indie-media branch is as accessible and as successful as the indie gaming sphere. And given that generally speaking Solarpunk has become a bit of a buzzword, one would think that there are some Solarpunk games out there. But... There kinda aren't.

There was a Solarpunk game announced last year that is basically a survival crafting game from the looks of it, where you explore some sort of floating isles word. The gif above is one I made from the trailer of the game.

And there are currently 27 games on Steam that are tagged as Solarpunk:

And just for reference, among those 27 games in the steam store tagged with Solarpunk have those other tags as the most common:

And of course there are quite a lot of smaller games on itch.io, where the solarpunk game category looks like this:

Other than that, there is of course a variety of lists online, which will tell you games that might not be tagged Solarpunk, and might not be meant to be Solarpunk, but have a Solarpunk-feel to them. Those might look somewhat like this:

And when you look through all those lists, you will quickly find one thing. Most of all the stuff that is a game tagged as Solarpunk, or told to be kinda solarpunk, fall under one of the following categories:

Farming Sims

City or Environmental Builders

Crafting Games

Narrative VN-like Games

Sure, there are a few exceptions in there, but not a whole lot given that there are not a whole lot of games to begin with and allmost all of it goes into the same kind of direction.

And I think this goes into the same direction of people being unable to think of how to write a Solarpunk thriller or Solarpunk stories in general. Because people do not understand how utopian stories work, people are unable to understand how to create conflict in utopian worlds.

So, I thought to myself... I am gonna share some ideas with you about what kinda games one could create that are not so much in the sim/builder type of game. Because Solarpunk could be so much more. :)

For drawing a man and a hoodie, I'd say I did pretty good. Neck work went splendidly, and man's nose is just 👩🏾‍🍳👌🏾

True and Orlando Sidebe enjoyed a celebratory lunch at a rooftop restaurant in San Myshuno, overlooking the city skyline. It was a special treat to honor True’s graduation from Britechester University with honors—an achievement she worked hard for, with Orlando’s unwavering support. The way The Sims team/EA is scrambling to RE-release 20 year old games and drop a bunch of Sims packs because they know people are sick of their money hungry attitude and the fact you have to pay separately for everything in the game now. And the fact that TS4 is the worst version of their game yet so they have to return to the original ones everyone loves.

They also know inZoi is coming for their crown in life simulation/dating sims. It's actually so funny to watch because they deserve it.

They priotized money over their creation and fand for years and only started caring when they realized we would all move to a better game with better graphics and you don't have to pay 10-40$ to have simple stuff like laundry, pets, careers...

As a Sims girlie for a long time, I can only say LMAO. Will I play the TS1 and TS2? Yes but that is besides the point! I won't feel bad when the company fails.

A huge shoutout to @bodaccia48 for sharing an incredible collection of patterns with me over the years! Originally, they were for my Sims custom content, but now they’ve found a new home in inZOI. And honestly? They look amazing here too! ✨

This Dreamy Kitchen is my first fully furnished room, and I had so much fun playing around with custom patterns and 3D-printed objects. inZOI’s new design tools are seriously next level!
