Vera Lúcia Santana denounces discrimination during an event organized by the Presidential Ethics Commission

Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) Justice Vera Lúcia Santana says she feels humiliated and plans to take legal action after experiencing racism at a federal government event last Friday (16). "There was a refusal to see me as a dignified person."

The second Black woman ever to serve on Brazil’s electoral court, Vera Lúcia recounts that she was denied entry to a building where the Presidential Ethics Commission was holding a seminar on ethics in public service. She was scheduled to speak at the event.

Upon arriving at the entrance, she identified herself by name. Two receptionists told her she was not on the list. Vera stated she was a substitute justice of the TSE and presented her official ID card.

"Neither of them even picked up the card to look at it, and one kept telling me to call the event organizers," she told Folha. "It’s humiliating — a form of contempt, a mistreatment that puts you in a place of personal indignity."
