暑すぎて、外に出て何もできないので、読谷村にあるユンタンザミュージアムに行きました。

「すがいぬ　ことば（装いのことば）」と言って、沖縄で着られていた服（当時は着物）についてあれこれ紹介されていました。

また、それらの着物の呼び名もうちなーぐちで紹介されていました。

睇到呢集嗰陣，就諗到老竇曾經用雪糕棒製造過一張摺櫈仔！（用雪糕棒制造啲小型傢俬係老竇曾經嘅一個嗜好。）

即刻抄佢出嚟畀 「桶走」 坐！估唔到 「桶走」 咁適合坐落去喎！摺櫈仔好似係特登整咗畀佢噉！😸 「桶走」 睇起嚟係咪好開心呢？仲有，我老竇製造嘅摺櫈仔正唔正呀？😺 幾咁希望我有佢一半嘅本領呀！

可惜，佢呢套功夫就冇遺傳畀我…我亦都冇藝術家，冇工程師嘅天份…😿 舊底喺中學時曾經有上過木工班（係冇得選擇，逼不得已要上嘅課程），但係始終都係徒勞無功！😿 喺嗰班上冇學到啲乜嘢，只係賺到 「肥佬」 一個！😿

另外一方面，先排幫襯咗一間沖繩式餐館。

餐牌封面幾得意喎！😺 有沖繩島出名嘅 「シーサー」（shīsā；由漢字嘅 「獅子」 所嚟嘅）做嘜頭。而根據網上搜查，餐館名 「ニライカナイ」（nirai kanai），沖繩話嘅意思係 「神明之地」 噉解。另外，覺得呢度嘅裝飾都幾唔錯喎，幾復古，溫暖嘅感覺！

一邊等緊餸嘅時候，一邊讀緊餐館內飾墻上啲貼紙簽。順便練習一下日文！「ソーキ網焼き」（sōki amiyaki）係乜嘢呢？「ソーキ」（sōki；據稱係來自漢字嘅 「梳」）係指緊 「沖繩式燜排骨」，「網焼き」（amiyaki）係 「燒烤」 嘅意思。「スーチカー焼き」（sūchikā yaki）係 「燒鹽豬肉」，而 「メンチカツ」 （menchi katsu）即係 「炸肉碎餅」 噉解。

第一次試沖繩式菜，但係早已經有個概念沖繩菜同中式菜，尤其係南方中式菜，有好大嘅相似性。

果然，嗌咗個嗰套 「ラフテー」 (rafuté；漢字寫法Wiki話係寫成 「羅火腿」 噉解) 套餐真係同我熟悉嘅紅燒肉，或者有啲名聲嘅東坡肉好相似！簡直可以話 「ラフテー」 嘅味道同中式嘅滷肉根本冇分別！

雖然係噉講（笑），但又唔係話唔好食喎！「ラフテー」 燜到好腍，咬起嚟唔韌，肉喺口入面好快融，好容易消化。正呀！😺

仲外買咗啲沖繩式 「冬甩」。沖繩話稱 「サーターアンダギー」 (sātā andagī)。聽佢嘅名亦都可以估到 「サーター sātā」 係 「砂糖」 嘅意思，至於 「アンダギー andagī」 呢，網上搜查話畀我知係指緊 「油炸」 嘅意思。

Wiki亦都有話，其實 「サーターアンダギー」 係由中國嘅一種油炸甜球，叫 「沙翁」，嚟嘅。😮 我搵緊 「サーターアンダギー」 有關嘅資料先知有 「沙翁」 嘅存在喎！

三隻狗仔畀 「サーターアンダギー」 魅惑咗噉！(笑)

點都好，叫佢 「沙翁」 也好，「サーターアンダギー」 也好，第一次試沖繩風味嘅 「冬甩」，味道唔知點形容先好…出面嚡嚡嘅口感，有啲似菠蘿包噉，入面似濃密嘅西式蛋糕，味道有啲似雞蛋仔噉…總之，就幾好味啦！（笑）呢間餐館值得再嚟試過！

Month wrap-up

Korean: 383 words this month, the biggest amount this year! This was my main focus this month. Picks of my favorite words from this month:

Japanese: only 57 words this time! I feel like I've studied more though. I've gotten better at listening! Favorite words:

Mandarin and Cantonese: I haven't focused on these much this month. However I've been listening to both languages a bunch.

Mongolian: I haven't logged the words I know because I'm learning it with a different approach. But I've been studying it a lot and am learning a bunch of new words!

Toki Pona: I can now understand written text 99% of the time. I should practice writing next.

Okinawan: I've learn the Okinawan version of every Japanese word I've studied this month. I'm progressing steadily.

Other languages: I've been learning random words from other languages too. Notably Hungarian (Which I haven't learned at all in the past). Maybe I should start studying it regularly!

Enstars Japanese Support Ticket - Walkthrough & Example Template

The recent AKATSUKI event has made many egregiously bad and offensive choices regarding the unit and Ibuki (long story short - he joined them, effectively destroying AKATSUKI's buildup & writing, AND japanizing a proudly Ryukyuan idol. Please check (but do not overwhelm) @/gitsunegal on twt for more threads and details regarding this), earning the justified ire of fans of all units and languages.

One way of effectively utilizing your anger productively is to send a support ticket to Happy Elements, explaining your dissatisfaction with these decisions and urging them to reconsider. This shows them that fans are not happy with this decision, and (more importantly, to most companies) that they stand to lose profits for this choice.

Therefore, I have created this guide for sending the support email to them, as well as provided a template email in Japanese & English that you can use, which was very graciously proofread by a kind fan on twt. You can also send them your own inquiry in English, or also send an inquiry through the English website (the more, the better!). They will read it, and it does hold weight, even if you may not get a reply from the Japanese side of things!

Walkthrough + Template under the cut!

Firstly, go to https://www.happyelements.co.jp/contact/form_guide/. The page should initially look like the one below (desktop).

This is the section of the official Happy Elements website where contact inquiry links are. In order to more easily navigate this page, I highly recommend that you use a built-in translator tool to translate the webpage in real time (example below).

Scroll down until you hit the Ensemble Stars section (below, translated).

You can choose either Basic or Music to send an inquiry to - the process is the same (I suggest one to both, if you can). That will then lead you to this screen (below, translated).

Click the little box next to "agree" at the bottom of the page. That will then cause a drop down menu to appear at the top of the virtual paper. Click the last drop-down menu option - Opinions, requests, and feeback (below, translated).

By selecting this option, you will automatically be directed to the actual inquiry form (below, translated).

From there, fill out the form. Put your email in the example box (I recommend using the same email as your JPstars account - if you don't have one, simply use whichever). Either keep the "-" in the optional reply box, or select "not desired", if you don't want a reply from support. In your inquiry box, you can either put your own inquiry fed through a translation machine (I recommend DeepL, and having a Japanese speaker look it over before sending if possible - be short, blunt, and professional!), or use the template inquiry I provide at the end of this post, which you can edit as you see fit! Creating your own inquiry in English is also an option, though you are more likely to get a reply through the English Happy Elements website (example inquiry below, translated page).

Make sure to click the box next to "agree" at the bottom of the page. Then, click send, and you're done!

It is also very insensitive and disrespectful to the Okinawan people. I love Ensemble Stars, AKATSUKI, and Ibuki, and am heartbroken by this story. I hope the management will seriously consider my inquiry.

Other things you can mention:

Go into more detail about how offensive it is for Ibuki to join a Japanese unit, given his identity as an indigenous character.

Reiterate how much AKATSUKI's writing has emphasized that the unit is the three of them (I suspect this one won't receive much attention though, considering the story basically mocks the line of thinking :/)

Mention how much you spend on the game, and how much they would be losing. Especially effective if you spend a lot on an account linked to your inquiry email, and if you actually boycott (no playing or spending).

If you're a producer of Knights, Switch, Eden, or Valkyrie (units who have not had their center this rotation), you can say that you have decided not to tier or play for them now. Especially effective because three out of the four are big moneymakers (Knights being the biggest in the game), they're already on thin ice with Sora fans after VS GLADIATOR, and it's been several months since a lot of their producers have spent money tiering (17, in Valkyrie's case).

Really, anything you can do to get it through their heads is great, especially if you follow through and don't spend money or play the game for this time period.

For me, the one good thing to come out of this disaster was the support and solidarity I saw within the fandom, and while I may personally be stepping back from Enstars, I hope to encourage that energy how I can on my end.

Ryukyu Clothing (Ryusou/Uchinaasugai - "Kimono")

PSA: I am not a professional dresser or historian and finding this information is more of a cultural hobby. Please correct me if you see any discrepancies.

From a Ryukyuan-language standpoint, I don't think it's appropriate for Ryukyuan clothing to be called "Kimono" because it isn't Japanese. The general term meant to talk about Okinawan clothing in the Ryukyuan Kingdom context is 琉装 (Ryusou in Japanese/Uchinaasugai ウチナースガイ in Uchinaaguchi). I'm calling it "Kimono" here because it's the most easily understandable. Additionally, this post will not include textiles from the Amami or Ishigaki region and focuses on Uchinaa.

Most Ryukyuan clothing is made for the weather of the region, which can be more humid and hot than Japan. Sadly, if there was record of Ryukyuan clothing before the Kingdom era, it's lost to history. Being a region of trade, a lot of clothing takes inspiration from the many cultures and countries the Ryukyus were in contact with (Southeast Asia, East Asia). Textiles that included Bingata, Kasuri, Silk, or Patterns were for those of upper classes.

I think the most well known style of Ryusou is the one that incorporates a Bingata robe over ウシンチー (Ushinchii). The robes were made of silk and was usually worn by the upperclass citizens in the Ryukyu Kingdom. They tend to have larger sleeves for air. It also tends to fit "loose" since it's very easy to sweat in the region. For men and women formal attire consists of a two-piece outer garment worn over an underwear garment.

ウシンチー　Ushinchi

Below is an example of me being dressed in a ウシンチー (Ushinchii) style, which as you can see in this situation the ウシン (Ushin) sash is small. Doesn't always incorporate Kasuri, sometimes it's a solid color. Sometimes it will incorporate other Ryukyuan style clothing.

This is a more formal style of dress but this is an example of one look when they are paired together.

ドゥジン & カカン Duujin and Kakan

There are other clothes for women like one worn by court ladies that are "two pieces" likeドゥジン (Upper piece) and カカン (skirt). They can also have a Bingata robe worn over it. I believe the Kakan is inspired by the Hanfu and Mamianqun.

ハチマキ Hachimaki

For formal wear for men in upper classes, the clothes tend to be more simple. They wear a ハチマキ (Hachimaki) which is a hat meant to denote your rank. Men also would tend to wear thicker sashes or obi than women.

芭蕉布 Bashofu

For common people, I don't know what the name for the attire would be but it was made of Bashofu (banana fibre). Now the textile is quite rare and sought after but before the war, it was commonplace to wear and typically worn much shorter than a Japanese kimono (around the shins). It was a relatively breathable fabric and the sleeves are more like open sleeves than what a kimono is like.

Thank you for speaking up on white oppression! It's especially getting bad since now having pride in white heritages instantly gets your labeled as a "white supremacist" these days 🙄

I'm approaching a white oppression from a historical perspective as a history fan and as an European. Because it is a historical fact, not an opinion. No matter how hard someone might insist that there has never been any oppression or genocide against white people, it does not erase historical facts.

In Europe, white people have been treating each other like shit because of religious and national differences. Ask Estonians, Irish, Karelians, Finnish... Our native religions have been destroyed because of Christianity and Catholicism by other white people (my German friend was sad that no records of native German belief systems have survived). White people were kidnapped and trafficked to Middle-East's slave markets as slaves (you can read about Turkish abductions in Iceland here - just one example of this white people slavery). I could argue and say that witch hunts were also a form of oppression and definitely a genuine man hunt, organized by white people against white people.

We Finns have been able to have a higher education in Finnish only for a little while; the first Finnish speaking university was opened to Turku in 1920(!), and the first Finnish speaking school was opened to Jyväskylä in the late 1850's. Finnish writing system was invented in the 16th century and Finnish got an official language status in Finland in 1892. Although from 1883, civil servants had to use Finnish and deal documents in Finnish. The Finnish language (Finnic-Ugric) has existed for over 3000 years but it has been officially recognized for about 140 years.

And it's not only an European thing but a global thing that people from the same area, looking exactly like each other, are oppressing each other. Artist Simon Fujiwara explained that her mother, who is Japanese, was not allowed to speak her native Okinawan dialect at a school in Japan, but she was punished every time harshly if she did that - and that wasn't that many decades ago. My Vietnamese friend's mother loathes Japanese because of what they did in Vietnam. Zainichi Koreans lived in slums and had a hard time getting any income because Japanese companies didn't want to hire Koreans and no one wanted to rent a house to Korean people.

This world is very, very versatile and an interesting place. The more you study history, globally and your local history/your own area/nationality/religion history, the more you realize that we're all in the same shit, in a way or another. No one gets out alive without hurt and bruises. The best way to fight that is to be kind and look after one another. While we might not be able to do big global things in our individual lives, we can always choose to be kind, compassionate and supportive in our daily interactions. Online ones included.

Being kind is free. Being curious is educational and wise. Supporting one another through tough times is the first step for a better world (and future) for us all.

And, we learn the best from looking back to history and trying not to repeat the same mistakes.

AKATSUKI Drama - Not So Happy Elements

For those currently in the dark of what has been happening then I will try my best to explain what is happening….

The unit AKATSUKI, which consists of the members Kanzaki Souma, Hasumi Keito, and Kiryu Kuro…. Now it seems they gained a fourth member, Ibuki Taki… the introduction of the unit, that praises itself on its traditional Japanese image, has taken in an indigenous boy who was originally from Okinawa.

Why is this problematic?

Historically speaking the Japanese were brutal to the people of Okinawa, specifically the Ryukyuan people. According to history, the Okinawans, formerly known as the Ryukyuans, existed as the Ryukyu Kingdom since the 13th century until Meiji Japan forcefully annexed the island nation. Under the Japanese colonial rule and assimilation policy, the Ryukyuans lost their own culture, language, land, and political institutions. Emphasis on the word “forcefully”….

Ok, now explain why else this is problematic?

Certainly! This is an act of “japanizing” the character of Ibuki Taki by making this whole event and story an act of cultural insensitiveness and an utterly offensive move by Happy Elements as not only a company but the moves made by the game’s developers and creators.

How can we bring light to this situation? Is there anything players can do?

Other than sharing this message here on Tumblr with others along with the links provided we can do a boycott of the game itself.

THIS MEANS NO SPENDING AND/OR PLAYING THE GAME WHATSOEVER FOR A CERTAIN PERIOD OF TIME!!

No money and/or lack of players can damage them, now while I understand that many of us are Enstars fans and adore our idols let’s try and think of the bigger picture… tackling a situation that is highly offensive and needs to be stopped.

What else can be done?

If you want to go the extra mile, while I don’t expect anyone to do so, petitions can be made… this situation needs to be made known widespread. If you have the guts to do so, send this to gaming news outlets and let it be known. Spread the word, gain attention. Do something. While I don’t expect this, I hope somehow this topic reaches more people…

How has this already affected Happy Elements?

Fans from Japan and globally have expressed hatred for this recent event and have review bombed the tweets on Twitter (X). Any and all posts made by Ensemble Stars JP have been given hate posts, same is happening to some posts on the EN page. Ensemble Stars is receiving a massive amount of backlash for their actions and it is quite entertaining to see.

The voice actors have ZERO say in what happens to their characters, it’s is far beyond their power to say they want their character to have an entirely different story than what was given originally. hi!! fellow language nerd here, and i really admire how youre studying some smaller languages as well despite it being pretty difficult to find resources ime

some of them are actually also on my "wishlist" but ive been struggling with finding resources, so i was wondering if youd have any to share?

im interested in the north korean variety of korean, in the jeju dialect/language and in okinawan! (i can also read korean, so resources in korean are fine too. sadly not good enough at japanese yet 🥲)

also if you have tips for finding resources yourself those would also be appreciated!!

Hello, and sorry so much for not answering this earlier, I've been super busy!

For North Korean, there are actual NK grammars for the language, but now that the country has started taking many of their websites down, it might be hard to access (also depending on where in the world you are and if you have a VPN or not), so if you can read Korean, I recommend just going to read NK news! They are very easily accessible online, for example, at KCNA watch ! You can also watch full days of TV content on the site and use their useful tools for going through the content. This site is awesome and needs way more support from viewers!

I usually recommend news and a good dictionary for any language, same goes for Jejuan, as you can find news online at KCTV Jeju. They are also on YouTube, so you can listen to the news in the language as well. There are just over 1000 lemmas in the Jejuan wiktionary, so that can get you started. After you have less to work on, but with a good website translator, anyone can use the Naver Jeju "dialect" database.

For Okinawan, I actually ended up finding most of the sources out there lacking, so I made my own textbooks while searching for information (I made three in total. I don't think I can post them because it's not my place to say how their language works, I might be a linguistics student but am not qualified enough yet). What I recommend is jlect for searching for words (may not be that helpful after reaching B2, as many translations are in Japanese. With Okinawan, you really want to know Japanese first, as most of the resources out there are aimed at Japanese-speaking Okinawans wanting to reconnect with their language. There is currently a Wikipedia incubator for the language, and I recommend checking that out for reading. For listening, there is the Okinawan "dialect" radio, which you can also find online if you look for it.

My hidden tip for any language is searching for grammars using Google's "filetype:pdf" search feature. I will demonstrate its effect:

Searching for a grammar online will usually bring you to websites which may not be very useful if you are a linguist like me as they are aimed at the average non-language nerd! Now, if we put filtype:pdf at the end...

The search result brings up whole grammar books for free. Easy! This is how I find the grammar books of my most endangered languages. Have fun!

something i wanna talk about is：do you think daisuke was born in america，or raised in japan and moved to america as a t(w)een？

because i can't help but imagine him speaking japanese with a heavy kansai dialect，though i can definitely see him as okinawan too。

to add to this，at the point of joining the tulpar crew，he speaks fluent english as he's been living in america for 10+ years。

however，since becoming swansea's intern，he's having a few more struggles with the language than he anticipated。swansea's one of those guys that uses a lot of dated phrases that make absolutely no sense to daisuke。

for example，they'd be working on something the utility room and swansea would say something like： “you're gonna have to bite the bullet and replace that coil. if you don’t, we’ll have to take the whole thing apart again。”

and daisuke would be sitting there thinking：“bullet？you have a gun!?(･_･;?”

Yesterday idol gatcha game Ensemble Stars made what is perhaps the worst writing decision of all time by adding an indigenous Okinawan 15 yr old character to a 10 yr old firmly established unit whose entire thing is being based on traditional Yamato Japanese aesthetics, essentially making an indigenous character assimilate into a living representation of the culture that colonized him while also upsetting the balance of what was an extremely tight knit and beloved unit that has multiple lines in the game saying that they don't want anyone else to join their group. It's made literally everyone mad and the company's posts are getting angrily qrted by all 5 of its main user bases (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and English) beating their ass in different languages 😭😭
