Boom, Boom, Boom. CLAP!
Heading into the QA module this week and it was a good experience to finally get hands on with some real in production game. Due to the nature of this module, there’s a lot more time for side project work to be done and so recently I’ve been working on particles for a side project.
So far the two major implementations revolve around the shooting and a work in progress smoke screen. Getting to experiment with particles in such an early stage of the game really shows how much polish can refine a product. The gun went from dull and lifeless to now a somewhat powerful heavy machine.

Lighting for Design - Adding Assets to the Level


I have started to think about and create some environmental effects made using the particle system in UE4.
I made this rainfall effect, which the player will be able to see by looking out of the windows. It is hard to capture the movement in a screenshot, but the rainfall looks believable in the level. I have also added another particle effect which creates the impression of the raindrops splashing when they hit the floor, but this cannot be seen in the images.
I wanted to create a gloomy world atmosphere outside of the mansion, and the impression of chaotic weather. This ties in with the storyline - meteors have crashed to Earth which has caused reality to split and the parallel dimension to exist.
Next steps - create more weather particle systems and maybe even a simple meteor effect to play outside of the windows, to add to the look and feel.

CollisionEvents (Scrapped)
CollisionEvents make sure I can trigger certain things on collision. I know i want to fade out the particles when they collide with the player, so there is no fixed particle lifespan. The distance to the player had impact on the particles lifetime and this is why CollisionEvents make it possible to trigger the fade effect at the right time.
As of now I have scrapped the particles with trails to the player for various reasons. It mainly has to do with aesthetic reasons and the performance cost. Another important factor is the controller responsiveness and the player being able to quickly absorb and abstain energysources.

Particle System _ Real Fire Texture
색상의 가산 합성 모드를 통해 파티클이 시작하는 부분이 제일 많은 레이어의 픽셀들이 쌓여 밝아지고 점점 파티클의 수명이 지나면서 픽셀의 본래 색상 값이 보여지며 어두워지는 원리이다. 그것이 우리에게 불꽃이 눈에 보여지기까지의 방식이다.
