The Dissertation Journey and Your Mental Health
Tumblr media
The journey of a dissertation can often feel astonishingly solitary, an experience compounded by the weight of stress, anxiety and daily worries. It was precisely this sense of isolation that compelled me to become a dissertation coach, with the goal of transforming the solitary odyssey into more of a shared pilgrimage.
I clearly remember the overwhelming sense of responsibility and the looming uncertainty that clouded some of my time as a PhD student. Yet throughout it all, it was essential to remember that I was not alone. I relied heavily on my own dissertation coach, project supervisor, peers in the program and family to remind me that this particular academic challenge was, in fact, worth it. Dissertation Help For Students Who Want To Finish Faster
Tumblr media
Completing a dissertation is one of the most challenging academic tasks students face, especially when juggling deadlines, research complexities, and personal responsibilities. For many, the process can become overwhelming and drawn-out. That’s where Dissertation Help becomes not just useful, but essential.
Whether you’re a master's or PhD student, finding reliable dissertation help can significantly reduce the time it takes to complete your project—without sacrificing quality or academic integrity.
Why Students Struggle with Dissertations
Writing a dissertation is more than just putting words on paper. It requires topic selection, in-depth research, methodology development, data analysis, and academic writing skills. Many students face:
Time constraints due to part-time jobs or family commitments
Difficulty organizing ideas into a coherent structure
Limited access to resources or research materials
Writer’s block and lack of motivation
Unfamiliarity with academic formatting styles like APA, MLA, or Chicago
These challenges often delay progress and increase stress. Seeking Dissertation Help can ease the pressure and keep you on track for graduation.
What is Dissertation Help?
Tumblr media
Dissertation Help refers to academic support services tailored to guide students through various stages of their dissertation process. This may include:
Topic selection guidance
Proposal development support
Literature review assistance
Methodology consultation
Data analysis help (quantitative or qualitative)
Proofreading and editing
Formatting and citation support
This help can be offered by academic consultants, research mentors, editors, or dissertation coaches. The goal is to help you finish faster by providing expertise and reducing unnecessary rework.
Benefits of Dissertation Help for Finishing Faster
If you're racing against a submission deadline or aiming to graduate on time, here’s how Dissertation Help can accelerate your progress:
1. Clearer Structure and Planning
Dissertation Help services assist in outlining your dissertation from the beginning, helping you break down the entire project into manageable phases. This eliminates confusion and wasted time.
2. Faster Topic Approval
A compelling research topic is crucial, but getting it approved by your supervisor or committee can take weeks. Dissertation experts can help you craft a focused and relevant topic, increasing the chances of fast approval.
3. Efficient Literature Reviews
Sifting through hundreds of scholarly sources is time-consuming. With help, you can quickly find and summarize key studies, ensuring your literature review is comprehensive yet focused.
4. Streamlined Methodology
Whether qualitative or quantitative, choosing the right research method is crucial. Dissertation Help ensures that your methodology is academically sound and practical, reducing revisions later on.
5. Quick and Accurate Data Analysis
Analyzing data, especially using statistical software like SPSS, STATA, or NVivo, can be a bottleneck. Dissertation consultants can guide you or even perform analysis under your supervision to save time.
6. Polished Drafts
Editing your own work takes time and objectivity. Professional proofreading ensures your drafts are free from grammatical and formatting errors, helping you submit a clean version on the first try.
When to Seek Dissertation Help
While some students seek support after encountering issues, it’s more effective to get help early. Consider using Dissertation Help if:
You’re unclear about your research direction
Your proposal keeps getting rejected
You’ve missed one or more internal deadlines
You struggle with academic writing or language barriers
You’re trying to finish within a tight timeline
Early support means fewer delays and faster turnaround at every stage.
Common Misconceptions About Dissertation Help
It’s cheating.
Dissertation Help is not about having someone else write your work. It’s about mentorship, guidance, and editing—support that helps you complete your own research more effectively.
Only weak students need help.
Even top-performing students seek Dissertation Help. It’s a strategic move to manage workload, meet deadlines, and maintain quality under pressure.
It’s too expensive.
Many Dissertation Help services offer flexible pricing, especially for individual sections like literature reviews or editing. Investing in help can prevent costly rework or missed deadlines.
How to Choose the Right Dissertation Help
Here are a few tips for selecting effective and ethical Dissertation Help:
Look for qualified professionals with academic backgrounds in your field
Ask for sample work or previous experience with dissertations
Choose services that offer plagiarism-free support
Make sure they focus on guiding, not ghostwriting
Check for clear communication and confidentiality policies
Reliable help can be a game-changer if chosen carefully.
Conclusion
Completing a dissertation can feel like an uphill battle, but it doesn’t have to drag on for months or years. With the right Dissertation Help, you can overcome academic hurdles, clarify your research direction, and stay on schedule—without compromising on quality.
Whether you need guidance with research design, help with editing, or support during analysis, seeking Dissertation Help is a smart investment in your academic success. The sooner you start, the sooner you’ll finish—and the faster you’ll move on to your next achievement.

Congrats to you, @thehoneybeet! That's so great, and I always think the more ideas the better!! So yeah, 100% cosign, get those accommodations!
For me, it was really tough to finally acknowledge that my ADHD is, in fact, a disability, but once I started to integrate that, it helped me to 1) offer myself some grace when things are hard and 2) realize there was no way for me to just power through it, and I'd never ever expect anyone else to do that!
So, this will be a bunch of rambling about things I think about and things that work for me - hopefully there will be some helpful things!
For general life:
Self-care on the fundamentals. Getting enough sleep (earlier), taking my meds, eating well, exercising, taking down time (this can be hard in grad school because there always something else to be doing haha so I think it's important to actually put it on the calendar, so you know you have permission to be just hanging out or relaxing or whatever). Connecting with people who love you. Connecting with people who are there to support you - therapist, coaching, tutoring, whatever might help.
I think it's useful to get a good sense of where your particular struggles manifest. For me, initiation and time management are really big struggles. Once I'm on task, I can usually keep going (hyper focus haha) - but switching is really tough. I'm one of those "I have to do something at 2 so I can't do anything until then). So here are things I do.
I rely heavily on schedules and alarms. I put everything in my google calendar and I put alerts on all of them - as many as I think I might need. I also really need the visual, so until I went back to work, I wrote the week's schedule on a whiteboard on my fridge, but now with me working, my whole family life got more complicated so we now have a spreadsheet we fill out every Sunday with who needs to be driven where and who gets which car, as well as planning out dinners for the week. I make a grocery list based on that plan and we've been sticking to it pretty well. (I literally print it out and color code it).
Timers are super helpful for me when I have a set amount of time for one thing. I am working on training myself to just respond to it. Like, I might have 10 minutes in the morning to read, so I'll set the timer, which lets me relax and just read, trusting the external scaffold. I also do this in meetings and stuff at work, so I know I won't lose track of the time.
It's important for me to build habits. My work badge and parking pass always go in the outer pocket of my backpack, so I haven't lost it (so far). Keys always go in my little purse that goes either in my backpack or hangs on the bannister. I know I tend to be careless and like, my brain is always ahead of my body so I lose stuff, misplace stuff, so building in structures for where stuff goes really does help (shoes always go in the shoe rack, that sort of thing). I've used the Tile in that past and now I use find my... more than I wish I had to, but it helps! I lay out workout clothes so I can get on the treadmill first thing in the morning (the only time I really have for it).
It was really helpful for me to figure out where I get derailed and be realistic about what I can and can't do. Like when I was driving my kids to school every day, I realized that I get really thrown off when I have to leave the house and come back, so working on ways to reduce the time I spent noodling around before getting to what I need to be doing was helpful. I really want to to be writing and I'm trying to figure out when my brain isn't too tired and when I have time. It's a work in progress for sure.
For graduate school. I think so much of this is the same. Knowing what you need for productive working conditions. Do you need music? No music? Do you have a dedicated work space? Do you need one? When I was in phd school, I literally wrote 85% of my dissertation at a Starbucks, somehow it worked for me. I've gotten much better about being able to work at home, but I never used to be able to. I also think this organizational stuff is so good. I think putting everything in your calendar, or using a paper calendar, or whatever might work for you is necessary. I put deadlines in, and I also put the along the way deadlines - when is the paper due? What are the parts of it that I need to do along the way? Setting those deadlines and figuring out how to carve up your time. Are you someone who does better with setting a time (like 2 hours on this project) or a task (write the intro and start the lit review etc). Like, I would print out blank monthly calendars for the semester, and then put all my deadlines on them and post it on my wall so I could be checking in every week, and look ahead to things like those weeks where you have a paper and an exam and a project. So knowing where I'd have to get stuff done early (which is... not my forte).
For me, as well, medication has been a really crucial tool. I take Wellbutrin (for depression and the ADHD), guanfacine (which I take for Long Covid but happily is an ADHD med) and I have a prn stimulant which really does help. I don't take it every day, but when I really need to focus, it definitely helps.
A thing I've had to work really hard on is the cognitive flexibility of assessing as I go and adjusting. My brain can be really rigid, and realizing that things might work sometimes and might stop so I need to pay attention. And back to that whole, offering yourself some grace.
I really do recommend checking out what your campus has for both academic supports but also counseling. I spent years working in college counseling centers and let me tell you, I'd be DELIGHTED to have a grad student come in at the beginning of the semester to work on all of this stuff proactively! That's what they're there for!
Okay that's probably WAAAAY more than you wanted! I am so happy to be a support if you need one as well, feel free to message me if I can help in anyway!
Ok. How do you manage to write/work/have a PhD with ADHD? I'm about to go back to grad school and fully in the struggle. Truly, any tips appreciated!
Oh pal! I wish I had a better answer for you which is that I wasn’t working full time when I was writing a lot - I was either working part-time or in school! So now that I’m working full-time, I’m trying to figure out how to write something more than a vignette!
That being said, I have lots of strategies for managing a busy life with ADHD, so if those would be helpful, let me know!
Also congratulations on grad school!! What a huge accomplishment!! ❤️

this may be a silly question but. what does an editor Do. I ask b/c I might need that service but don't even know I need that service.... hope this doesn't come across rude I'm just genuinely curious
Not silly or rude!! it's a fair question cause there are a bunch of different kinds of editors.
Basically, if you're working on something, (written work in my case but there are like video editors and audio editors and all that too,) you can send it to an editor and they'll help you get it ready for Whatever You Want To Use It For.
.....this got long lmao so i'm putting the rest under a cut ig
I'm very freelance (bc i'm disabled and don't have a degree 🥴) so i take whatever projects come my way, which atm means a lot of Masters and PhD level dissertations/theses, because my mom works for a university that has a lot of international and first-higher-education-degree students but DOESN'T HAVE A WRITING CENTER for some reason, so I'm usually like half editor half writing coach. Which is to say, an editor for a publishing house probably does much different work than I do and tbh I don't know Anything about what they do lol.
but how *my* job works is:
you send me a draft of your project.
I learn as much as i can about the end destination and audience of your project.
(this is a lot easier if you're writing, like, a Memoir or a Pamphlet For An Art Show, and a lot harder if I have to Read The Chicago Style Manual) (Chicago Style is probably fine but their style manual is fucking wack and i stand by that)
I read your project and i mark anything that is either a.) unclear or b.) Against The Rules Of Your Intended Destination
So like, if you're writing a masters thesis, I'm strict with grammar and with formatting. The style your institution is using probably has rules about whether you can use first person, and when you use italics, and whether your citations go in a bibliography or in footnotes or w/e.
If you're writing a Novel, I can be a lot looser with the rules and just look for: is this effective? what is this line Doing? is it doing it well? Does What It's Doing Actually Need To Be Done Right Now?
(editing fiction/creative nonfiction is WAY more fun but i don't get to do it very often. sigh)
I put my suggestions in the document you've sent me, with Track Changes on so you can see everything I've changed. I add comments to the doc wherever I think they're necessary/helpful.
I send the doc with my edits back to you
You (hopefully) read through and decide whether each edit makes sense to you. (this is the most important step, honestly)
If they make sense and you're happy with the resulting draft, my job is done and we shake hands and depart as friends.
If you have questions, or the edits require extensive rewrites, we ideally meet over zoom or w/e and I explain my suggestions to you, and we figure out how to Make The Words Do What You Want Them To Do. You send the doc to me again and I do as much of a second pass as you want/Will Pay Me For.
It's worth noting that there are different *levels* of editing, too. I've done jobs where I'm just checking grammar, or where I'm just checking formatting; I've also done jobs where I meet with the author and we basically write the piece together (which is really fun, actually, I like sitting down and asking, like, "okay, what are you trying to say," and figuring out how to help YOU figure out how YOU want to say it. it's like detective work :3 or therapy possibly). Those all take different levels of time and energy, so for student papers I end up with a lot of, like, "this could really use a thorough content edit/rewrite but it's Due In A Week so we're gonna make sure everything's spelled write and the footnotes are formatted correctly." (which i HATE doing btw, it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do but it Hurts My Brain bc it feels like I'm not Doing My Best which is Hell.)
anyway, the tl;dr is: editors take writing and suggest changes that will make it Perform Its Intended Function Better. the actual act of editing takes a lot of work, and often a degree of background research, too. tip your editors, is what i'm saying.

Linguistics Jobs: Interview with a Developer Advocate
I often talk about how Linguist Twitter is a great place to hang out. Twitter can be a big, confusing, noisy platform, but I’ve enjoyed building a little world full of linguists, and one of those excellent people is Rachael Tatman. It has been great to follow Rachael as she completed her PhD, got a job in data visualisation with Kaggle, and then moved on to chatbot maker Rasa. Rachael is not only a great linguist, but a thoughtful linguistics communicator. Her blog Making Noise and Hearing Things has a wonderful back catalogue covering data science, professionalism and emoji. You too can follow Rachael on Twitter (@rctatman).
Tumblr media
What did you study at university?
My BA is in Linguistics and English Literature (I double majored) from William and Mary (in Virginia, USA) and then I went to the University of Washington for grad school. I got my PhD in linguistics in 2017, and my dissertation was "Modeling the Perceptual Learning of Novel Dialect Features". Over the course of my PhD in particular I moved more and more into natural language processing, although I was still pretty much calling myself a computational linguist.
What is your job?
I'm a senior developer advocate for a company called Rasa. We make an open source framework for building chatbots/virtual assistants and free software for improving your assistant over time. (If you're a business using the free software and want additional fancy features, we also have a paid enterprise version.) Developer advocates are basically peer-to-peer technical educators. Our job is to help make it as easy as possible for developers to use whatever product it is that we support. So my day to day involves a lot of developer education–things like writing blog posts, giving talks and making videos–as well as providing technical support and product feedback. Because I have a research background and Rasa has a research team I'll sometimes help out with research projects as well.
How does your linguistics training help you in your job?
It helps me every day! One great example is that it's given me a good idea of the typological diversity of languages in the world. Since Rasa is a language-agnostic platform (we want to be able to support as many languages as possible) knowing what sort of differences there are between languages is very helpful. My linguistics training also taught me how to communicate complex topics succinctly and accurately which is a huge part of developer relations and related fields, like technical writing.
Do you have any advice do you wish someone had given to you about linguistics/careers/university?
Be really kind to yourself, especially when you're on the job market. There's a large emotional regulation component to searching for jobs that I don't think gets talked about enough. Find something that helps you disconnect from thinking about work or looking for work and commit to doing it often. That could be something as simple as following along with yoga videos in your room or setting up a weekly time to play video games with your friends or just taking a walk outside every day, maybe with your children if you have them. Building a brain break into my routine and keeping it stable really, really helped me both in graduate school and when I was on the job market.
Also: your goals and identity will change over time. You may think of yourself as an academic now but won't in 5 years. That's ok. It's normal. And it's also normal for those shifts to come with a grieving process, especially if you weren't expecting them. Give yourself grace, and time, to feel your feelings. And know that you can have a rich, happy fulfilling life that looks nothing like what you're planning for yourself right now.
Any other thoughts or comments?
The great thing about studying and having a fascination for language is that it's everywhere. Your linguistic training will give you a set of lenses you can look through for the rest of your life, and that's a thing to celebrate and cherish in its own right.

98 61 58 and 51 :>
You didn't make this easy, did you? 😆 (Thank you, though!)
51. Current stresses?
Way too many! 😬 But probably finishing this blasted dissertation (and having it actually be passable) and then the question of what next? that inevitably follows it's conclusion.
58. Four talents you are proud of having?
Oooo, err, I don't know... Can I say skills? I'm not sure if they're really talents, but I'm proud of my swimming (once upon a time in my undergrad, I swam for my university, now I just swim for fitness and do three hrs a week so about 9km total); my coaching (while it might be a part-time job, there can be real skill in coming up with and coaching practices for kids that teach them training skills, technical skills, and maintain a love of the sport, and I love that I'm still learning and fine-tuning those skills); my cooking/baking (it's just good fun to be in the kitchen and sharing that food, either feeding my flat, or taking baking to a friend's and them being able to enjoy it. Experimenting with food is also fun); and my writing (this one really changes depending on the day on whether or not I'm proud of the work I've done, but considering I'm working on my doctoral dissertation and have written far more fic than I had realized [Dancing in the Dark is complete now - whaaaat??? 😲] and there are times when I look at something I've written and can go, "this, this is good", I'd say it deserves to be on this list).
61. Favourite line from a book or show?
Hmmmm, I read so much and have come across so many good lines but I often don't write them down 😕... That said, there was a line in The Victoria Vanishes by Christopher Fowler that was describing the death of one of the characters (it is a murder mystery) where the phrase "into icy, infinite starlight" just really hit me. I also liked his line "Something about small, strong women opened his soul to the sky" in The Second Staircase. (I can't quite remember the context for that one, but I don't think it was super fluffy either 😆).
98. Favourite historical era?
You'd think from the topic of my PhD it'd be the Roman Empire in the first century CE, and while that does interest me, I'm not sure it's my favourite... When I was a kid it was ancient Greece and then ancient Egypt (but they were more for the mythology than anything else...). Now, I'm not so sure. Can I say the future? I'm curious about what could be 🤔

How to Stay Motivated Throughout Your PhD Journey
Embarking on a PhD journey is both an exciting and challenging endeavor. While the opportunity to contribute new knowledge to your field is rewarding, the road to a doctorate can be long, stressful, and sometimes isolating. Maintaining motivation throughout your PhD journey is crucial for overcoming obstacles and achieving your academic goals. Here are some strategies to help you stay motivated, along with ways PhD Help in India services can support you.
1. Set Clear, Achievable Goals
Setting clear and realistic goals is essential for maintaining motivation during your PhD journey.
a. Break Down Your Goals
Divide your long-term PhD objectives into smaller, more manageable tasks.
Tip: Instead of saying, "Finish my dissertation," set specific goals like "Complete the literature review by the end of the month." This makes the task feel less daunting and allows you to celebrate small victories along the way.
b. Use SMART Goals
Make sure your goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.
Tip: A SMART goal could be, "Write 500 words daily for the next two weeks." This keeps you on track and provides a sense of accomplishment.
2. Create a Structured Routine
A consistent daily routine can help you build momentum and maintain focus.
a. Develop a Daily Schedule
Allocate specific time slots for research, writing, reading, and breaks.
Tip: Use tools like Google Calendar or Trello to organize your day and set reminders for your tasks. Sticking to a schedule creates a sense of normalcy and control.
b. Balance Work and Rest
Include regular breaks in your schedule to prevent burnout and maintain productivity.
Tip: Implement the Pomodoro Technique: work for 25 minutes, then take a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer break. This technique helps maintain concentration and prevents exhaustion.
3. Celebrate Small Wins
Acknowledging your achievements, no matter how small, can boost your morale and keep you motivated.
a. Keep a Progress Journal
Track your progress by writing down what you accomplish each day.
Tip: Reflect on your achievements weekly. Recognizing how far you have come can give you the motivation to keep going.
b. Reward Yourself
Set up a reward system for reaching your milestones.
Tip: Treat yourself to something you enjoy, like watching a movie, going out with friends, or enjoying a favorite meal after completing a challenging task.
4. Stay Connected with Your Support Network
Having a strong support system can make a significant difference in maintaining motivation.
a. Regularly Communicate with Your Supervisor
Keep in touch with your supervisor to discuss your progress, challenges, and concerns.
Tip: Schedule regular meetings, and don’t hesitate to ask for feedback or clarification on any aspect of your research.
b. Join PhD Support Groups
Connecting with peers who are also pursuing their PhDs can provide emotional support and practical advice.
Tip: Join online or local study groups, attend workshops, or participate in academic forums. Engaging with others who understand your struggles can provide a sense of camaraderie and support.
5. Seek PhD Help in India Services
Professional guidance can be invaluable in navigating the complexities of a PhD program.
a. Professional Mentorship and Coaching
PhD Help in India services can provide mentorship and coaching to keep you motivated and focused.
Tip: Seek professional advice if you feel stuck or overwhelmed. Mentors can offer strategies for overcoming challenges, managing time effectively, and staying on track with your goals.
b. Access to Resources and Tools
These services often provide access to resources like research materials, software tools, and writing support.
Tip: Utilize these resources to streamline your work and reduce the time spent searching for information or tools.
6. Maintain a Healthy Work-Life Balance
Balancing your personal and professional life is crucial for sustaining motivation over the long haul.
a. Prioritize Self-Care
Ensure you get enough sleep, exercise regularly, and eat healthily to keep your mind and body in optimal condition.
Tip: Include activities that help you relax and recharge, such as meditation, yoga, or hobbies. A healthy mind is more capable of staying motivated.
b. Set Boundaries
Avoid overworking by setting clear boundaries between your PhD work and personal life.
Tip: Designate specific hours for work and leisure. Make sure to unplug from your research during downtime to prevent burnout.
7. Stay Inspired by the Bigger Picture
Remembering why you started your PhD can help you stay motivated when things get tough.
a. Keep Your Vision in Mind
Remind yourself of your long-term goals and what you hope to achieve with your PhD.
Tip: Create a vision board or write down your reasons for pursuing a PhD and place it somewhere visible. This can serve as a daily reminder of your ultimate objective.
b. Focus on the Impact of Your Research
Think about the potential impact of your research on your field or society.
Tip: Regularly revisit your research goals and reflect on how your work can contribute to advancing knowledge or solving real-world problems.
8. Embrace Challenges as Learning Opportunities
Challenges are inevitable in a PhD journey, but viewing them as opportunities for growth can keep you motivated.
a. Develop a Growth Mindset
Adopt a mindset that sees setbacks and failures as opportunities to learn and improve.
Tip: Whenever you face a challenge, ask yourself what you can learn from the experience. This perspective will help you stay resilient and motivated.
b. Seek Feedback
Constructive feedback from peers, mentors, or supervisors can help you improve and stay motivated.
Tip: Actively seek feedback and use it to refine your research or approach. Knowing you are making progress, even through setbacks, can keep your motivation high.

2020 Fic Year-in-Review!
It has been ... a year (both for global/national and personal reasons). I did less writing than I had planned to. Didn’t finish those WIPs like I promised myself I would. But! I worked my butt off to be there 110% for my students, and I still managed to write words and new fics! (According to AO3, I came in just under 200,000 words written/posted this year, which is more than I expected and a nice little boost.)
With the whole “5 fics you’re proudest of” end-of-year meme going around (thanks for the heads up about it @chainofclovers!) and having been tagged at some point in a fic-in-review thing whose questions I’ve lost, I want to focus on being happy with some of the things I did! So, without further ado, 5 fics in chronological order of posting that I’m proud of!
1. Swipe Right for Soulmates - Supercat, T
In general, I really dislike soulmate AUs, and that’s putting it lightly. I’ve read a handful I adore; I’ve tried to write through my issues with the trope a few times; and this is perhaps my favorite of my attempts at playing with it! I got to do a few fun things with genre in this rival-CEO fic and write Cat and Kara into a rivals-to-friends-to-lovers arc, which I don’t think we get too often with this pairing. Anyway, it was fun and felt different, and it still makes me smile!
2. Your fav is in fandom series - one Supercat, M; one Sanvers, T
These two one-shots are meant as a  kind of cracky love letter to fandom and the kinds of relational practices it can foster at its best. It came to be in the early weeks of the pandemic and lockdown in the US when, utterly unable to sleep one night (all the nights?!?), I turned to my wife at 1am and asked: “So...which one of the Supergirl characters would be the fandom asshole?” Originally there was meant to be a third fic feat. Lucy/Alura (Majorly Judging You) with my personal headcanon that Lucy organizes the big annual events like fic exchanges and ship weeks and that Alura takes the whole “thank your mods!” A/Ns very seriously, messaging Lucy each and every day of an event with personalized thank you notes that lead to a friendship, then more.
3. If you give an alien a syllabus... - General Danvers, G
Another love letter--this time to community colleges and the wonderful people who staff and attend them. This fic felt vital when I was writing it (there was a lot of stuff going on at my own university and many across the country that I was putting my job on the line to fight), and it was meant as a gift for a close friend who teaches at a local community college at a time when we couldn’t see each other in person. Even though I’ve only ever written a couple General Danvers fics, I quite enjoy fics about them (they were some of the earliest ones I ever read in the Supergirl tag!), and it’s always a lovely fandom to visit!
4. you showed me colors you know i can’t see with anyone else - Supercat, E
Despite being the only angsty thing I’ve written in quarantine when most of my fics have trended toward the cracky or the weird, I actually really enjoyed this smutty, feelings-heavy, years-later/post-breakup Supercat fic! I know that fic often shows some of the best of what life and love can be (which is awesome, even if I’m partial to messy characters who don’t do well with or think of themselves as deserving or wanting a neat happily ever after trajectory), but this felt a little gritty in ways that I personally like. It’s the aftermath of two complicated women coming together and shattering, showcasing all the messy emotions that remain when they start the process of picking those pieces back up and finding a new way to put them back together. Hilariously, I went into it envisioning something with a similar premise but lighter--essentially what would be a part 2 to this fic if I ever wrote it. It was meant to be about Cat and Kara after this initial moment of coming back together for the first time in years, seeing them sneak around almost like teenagers as they tried to keep this precious thing to themselves while they rekindled it and figured out what it could be away from the judgment of everyone who was there when they fell apart the first time.
5. Writing Retreats Are For Lovers - Supercat, M
Another AU! Well, Cat’s pretty much canon Cat, but featuring ABD PhD candidate Kara who meets her at a writing retreat as she tries to get the dissertation written and Cat finally gets a writing coach to help her through the worst case of writers’ block she’s had in years. It hit close to the heart and was very, very fun to write! I always have fun getting to bring characters into new settings to see what about them is integral to who they are and what is context-dependent, much like I’m intrigued by the different (and very similar!) ways relationship dynamics play out, especially early on, when the characters are in new settings and/or roles.
Honorable Mention: Queen of All Mediums - Supecat, G
It’s weird and quirky and a first foray into writing a historical AU based on a period I know so much--like, too much--about to start figuring out how to strike that balance between “what do people need to know for your fic?” vs. “what do you want people to know but honestly it won’t hurt their experience of the story if they don’t?” I have a very long nineteenth-century authors period piece all outlined, which I’ve debated trying to make original fiction or a Supercat fic. I don’t know where it’ll go, if anywhere, but it was nice getting to dip my toes into the historical romance genre here, even if it’s just a tiny little one-shot about spiritualism with a sprinkling of nineteenth-century class and gender politics in the US.
Theres a lot I could say about trends in my fic writing this year (so little angst! largely AU! no new WIPs!), but I won’t bore you all with my theories about why x or why not y. I wasn’t surprised by most of what I found looking through what I wrote, though I was shocked to find that I wrote only Supergirl pairings this year--a variety of pairings (only some of which appear on this list), but still. My writing and reading didn’t match up at all, and my random fic outlines and drafty drafts also include a much broader variety (some seeds of what was, at one point, to become a multi-chapter Grace/Frankie fic that I think I’ll need to ease into with a couple one-shots; several fully sketched out SwanQueen fics from binge-watching the whole series for the first time during the pandemic and having SO MANY thoughts about both the show’s promising notes and its many disappointments, as well as the fandom’s fabulous works; and a handful of notes about Dead to Me that are honestly closer to meta than fics proper anyway).
Honestly I’d love to see other people doing this! Consider yourself tagged, and feel free to tag me in your responses--I’d love to hear all about what writing you’re proud of!

Created for: The Sims 4 by asiashamecca
*** Created with Seasons and Game Version 1.46.18.1020 (August 16, 2018 Update) *** PLEASE NOTE: You WILL need the current Neia Career Commons file (included in download) also! Educators are amazing! I think of facing a room full middle school kids and my knees get weak. Also, there are so many paths and choices you can make in the education field. And all of them are equally important and interesting. I wanted to kind of dig into what kinds of things Educators do (and I kind of miss the Sims having a teacher career). I hope you have a teacher in your game who will enjoy it. Most of the paths have 5 levels. Academia has 7, taking you all the way up to university President. The idea is that your Sim will probably be an Elder by that time, which seems fitting. Also, that's where the big Simoleons are.  Pay levels are more EA than realistic for a teacher. Educators are sadly underpaid. I wanted to give your Sims a break and pay them what Educators DESERVE. Play with life, right? Lastly, during most of the school and Academia levels you earn a ridiculous amount of PTO. Like, a day per day. Rack it up and take summers off like a real teacher (well, except your Sims will get paid, so BONUS!). And so... on to... The Ultimate Educator Career Teaching is one of the most challenging careers a person can pursue. Expect to work long hours in what can be a highly stressful environment. However, educators can make positive impacts that may last for their students’ lifetimes. Great teachers do it all. Across all ages, languages, ethnicities, and subjects, teachers are some of the most widely skilled people around. Are you patient, calm, and detail-oriented, with an ability to clearly communicate information? Education may be the field for you.

Further your commitment to education by sharing what you know with new audiences. Advocating for teacher issues and pursuing policy positions involves relationship building, networking and strong leadership skills. You can lead a classroom, but can you lead teachers in demanding the help and resources they desperately need? Foundation Founder  (Level 10) Your policies have made a difference and now it’s time to use those policies to make the system better. You’ve founded the Nationwide Board of Teaching Standards (NBTS). Your team is committed to advancing better teaching and the NBPTS is the gold standard in teaching certification.
