“It was just…the idea. Marrying him. Being my mother’s daughter. Legally. Chaining myself to everything my parents wanted. Up until that point, I’d always told myself… ‘someday.’ Someday, they’ll let up and see sense. Someday, things will change. Someday, I’ll actually feel like I’m meant to be in this stupid body…like I’m not insane…” he laughed again, and James sat frozen, enamored and hypnotized by the rawness of Regulus’s words. He’d never spoken like this before and somehow, the feelings bubbling in James’s chest were stronger than ever. “I’d never have the gall to run off like Sirius…but someday,  something would give, and I wouldn’t have to piss off and turn my back on everyone I knew–to be utterly alone–just to be happy. Surely the universe wasn’t that cruel.”

James’s heart broke. Why? Why was the universe that cruel to someone who clearly didn’t deserve it?

“But then I was standing at the doors of the church with Father. And I had on this awful white dress and heels so high I couldn’t walk…you should’ve seen me, James, I looked horrible…”

He wanted to interrupt and say that Regulus would look beautiful in anything he wore. That he could parade around in a plastic bag or a four sack and James’d fall to his knees for him. But he figured it wasn’t the time.

“And I got the most horrible, claustrophobic, crushing feeling. Because I realized that nothing was happening,” Regulus whispered feverishly, tears falling again. “Nobody was stopping it. And if I didn’t do anything, I’d be trapped forever.”

James would have stopped it. Of that, he was sure. He’d have burned the entire church down.

“I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I just…panicked. And…I punched my father,” Regulus admitted, finally looking at James and giving him a watery grin.

“You…what?” he gaped, quite shocked. 

“Mhm. Look, here. I caught his tooth.” Regulus held his hand up, palm down, and James took it without thinking, eyes searching until he found a small scar in one of his knuckles that he was very tempted to press his lips to. “I’d like to think his dental bill was a nice little piece of revenge.”

Consider: Regulus Black with SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder)

Regulus Black who is called spoiled for not agreeing to wear certain fabric because it feels like they peel of his skin but no one understands

Regulus Black with no tags on his designs clothes

Regulus black who pre- transition hated having his long hair brushed because of the feeling and would only let his brother do it until he finally cut it short

Regulus Black who is always called a ‘vampire’ for sitting in the dark a lot but they don’t understand that it’s TOO BRIGHT

Regulus Black with not a single smooth ring, all textured for those times

Regulus Black who hates surprise touches, who actually barely minds physical touch from his loved ones but has to see it coming before. Who love warm heavy hugs (which are James’ specialty) but hates a sudden touch, pushing people away when it happens and often make them get the wrong message.

Mary can do the best makeup base and pretty much always wears a full face, she's given literally everyone who wears makeup in the group tips.

Marlene can do absolutely killer eyeliner which she also does pretty much every day.

Sirius wears anything from a full face of makeup (courtesy of Mary and Marlene's teaching because of course his family didn't teach him) to nothing depending on how he's feeling.

Dorcas can do magic with highlighter or glitter, she taught herself because it made her feel pretty when she started transitioning (mtf Dorcas my love).

James occasionally wears glitter he got from Dorcas because she noticed him staring at it when Regulus introduced them, he also wears concealer sometimes because he gets acne and is pretty insecure about it.

Pandora does the most extravagant eye looks ever and literally nothing else.

Regulus can contour like nobody's business, he learned from his mother to do makeup pre-transition because he needed to "uphold the family image" and continued to do it after a while when he came out because he loved it.

Barty learned to do eyeliner from Marlene in order to pisd off his Dad, because he loves it and because it makes Evan feral.

Lily, Peter, Evan and Remus don't really do makeup and are always waiting around before they go out as a group because they take about half as long to get ready.

Fic Scrap: Forced Marriage, second chance, Trans-Reg & Simp James

James meets Regulus pre Transitioning when he convinces his family to vacation in the same place as Sirius’s.

He falls in love INSTANTLY

They are 15 and 16 and he looks at Reg and immediately tries to woo him & prepares speeches to ask Sirius for his blessing. They have a short summer fling that neither Sirius nor his parents find out about. The Blacks forbid their children from associating with the Potters anyway.

Sirius runs away at some point. The Blacks are in a hurry to marry off Regulus to another prestigious family.

James didn't have contact with Reg in those years but he shows up before the wedding and begs him to run away with him, like Sirius.

Regulus confesses that he doesn't want to get married but he feels trapped and fears for his safety if he doesn't do it.

Then he confesses that he is trans. James is the first person he tells about it.

James promises to give him a life as a man, do anything in his power to protect him and give him what he wants. He reminds him of their summer and that he has been dreaming about being with him since then.

In the end they kiss, but Regulus can't go through with running away.

He gets married.

James is heartbroken.

Two years later, he gets a call out of nowhere.

"James?" The voice is quiet, shy even. Oddly familiar but he can't place it.

"Yes? Who is this?"

"It's, uhm, ... it's me."

James is about to ask who, when the recognition zaps through his body, making him sit up straight and half get out of his chair.

He almost says the name he has always known him as, but remembering his confession on his wedding day, he decides against it.

"You," He whispered. "Is it really..."

"Yes."

James closes his eyes at this voice. He has missed it far more than reasonable for a teenage summer fling and a kiss at his wedding to someone else.

"How are you?"

"Good. ...No, great. Fantastic even."

He hears a smile in his voice. He rarely ever smiled.

"I just applied for a divorce."

This pulls him out of his office chair fully. Unable - and unwilling - to hide his excitement he asks, "Divorce?"

"Yes. My parents died and... I felt like it was now or never. ...I decided it was now."

"Oh my god, I'm so proud of you. I'm so happy for you."

There is a chuckle. James has only ever heard him chuckle once before. He wants to drink up that sound.

"I was wondering if you'd... like to go to dinner with me. So, I can tell you the details, if you want to hear them."

"I'd love to. Tonight? I'm off work at 6, I could meet you at seven or half past."

"Let's make it eight. I'll send you the address after I made the reservation."

"Lovely. I can't wait to see you again."

"Me neither."

James’s heart skips a beat.

"Are you safe?"

"Yes. Don't worry about me. ...I guess I should let you go back to work. I don't want to take up too much of your time."

"No, please, take up all my time. It's been so long since I've heard your voice. Tell me something, anything."

"Okay... uhm, I made some decisions about my life going forward. Would you like to hear them?"

"In great detail."

Another chuckle. "I'll leave the details for the dinner. For now, it is this: I want to be called Regulus. I want to go on T, oficially change my name and sex, go back to my old surname, at least for a little while. I want to have top surgery. I want to get my own flat. I want to adopt at least two cats. I want to go to university, study something, get a job, earn money. I want to learn things and have hobbies that have nothing to do with chores. ... I want to kiss you."

His heart seemed determined to make up for the lost beats by doubling and tripling in speed.

"I want to kiss you in a very, very messy, improper and gay way. ...would that be okay with you?"

"Okay?" James half laughed, trying not to have a heart attack from pure joy. "Regulus. Regulus, Regulus, I vow that I will not rest until every dream and wish of yours is fulfilled."

"Good," Regulus said, and James could hear his relief. "I should go now. I'll see you tonight."

"Yes, yes you will, Regulus."

"Good. ...bye."

"Bye."

They don't hang up. They can't. They have to say good bye four times more until they finally hang up. James skips through the office, a large grin plastered on his face, telling anyone who doesn't want to hear it how he had a date with the most gorgeous person to ever walk the earth tonight.

When he finally arrives at the restaurant, he sees Regulus with short hair and a suit that doesn't belong to him and he knows this will be his future husband. And their wedding will be much grander and happier than Regulus’s first one.

Even more marauders era headcanons/fun facts from my au for them (some are really out of context)

There are 4 small clown dolls in the Gryffindor common room that are moved around daily solely to scare James

Remus had a buzz cut in 1st year and will pretend he doesn't know what your talking about if you bring it up

Regulus never really came out about being trans, he just kinda showed up one year as a boy and everyone was too scared of the Black family to question it

This then led to rumors that Regulus pre-transition was a different family member who was kicked out

That led to Sirius (somehow) managing to convince the entire Hogwarts population that Regulus was always there, and that his younger sister was a mass hallucination/Mandela effect

Every 'conversation' between Peter and Remus makes it seem like they don't even like each other, they're each other's favorites

James and Remus can't sit through horror movies without at least a little tears of fear

James is a childhood friend to like a fourth of Hogwarts

Barty never pulls a prank that is completely safe, a chance of death is essential

Concealing charms don't work on animingus forms, so Sirius had to come up with a bullshit excuse as to why his dog form is half white

Peter and Remus were cheerleaders in 3rd year after James and Sirius dared them to. This dare only happened bc they refused to play quidditch

Dorcas managed to hide her and Marlene's relationship for 8 months, solely bc of how unobservant her friends are

Mary was a theater kid and will cry if you bring it up

Sirius knew about jegulus before they even got together, but it took them months to actually tell him bc Sirius had a habit of pretending he was bothered by the idea and they thought he was being genuine

Narcissa has star based nicknames for everyone in her family

Sirius took up calling Narcissa Polaris so she wouldn't feel left out bc she's the only one without a star name

No one actually knows why Narcissa wasn't given a star name, not even the rest of the Black family

Barty likes to pretend the fact that both of his 'crushes' (Evan being his boyfriend) being blonde with blue eyes says nothing about his type

Peter can't tell the difference between when someone is genuinely flirting with him or making fun of him, rosekiller's aggressive flirting doesn't help

Sirius is weirdly into origami

Lucius and Narcissa treat Snape like their practice child

Marlene and James 'dated' when they were like 6 bc they thought it meant they got their family's money quicker

Sirius has a sweet tooth, Snape does too and they both hate it because of that

James is, surprisingly, more of an introvert than a extrovert

Sirius knows he's actually a Slytherin and won't wear green because he thinks it'll make it obvious to everyone else, it wouldn't

It's extra devastating because green is definitely his color

Regulus was supposed to be a Gryffindor and everyone can tell

Like he acts like every other Slytherin, he just has a vibe about him

Snape gossips with almost every professor and painting at Hogwarts

There's an incident board in the infirmary dedicated to the marauders

Lily keeps a small bag of cat treats for the strays at Hogwarts

Remus is allergic to pinecones

Peter is Russian and grew up there, but he can't stand the cold

Happy Marauders Headcanon cuz someone needs to make some...

Imagine Regulus joining the Quidditch team pre-transition and he was hesitant to stay on the team after his transition cuz insecurities and all that. But his teammates reassure him that they'd be more than happy to have their best player stay on the team.

After a match they won because of Reg, they chant his name like a cheer. And he just feels so fucking happy to hear people call the name he picked for himself.

okay so im planning (JUST PLANNING) a canon-compliant fic and im making a list of spells or details id like to add (because writing magic is shit hard but it's soooo much funnnn)

remus enchanting muggle books, lycanthropy research or personal notebooks's covers to look like textbooks or really boring titles (sirius is still interested even if it's, like, "advanced latin grammar" and it pisses remus tf off that he always asks to have a look)

peter using his pocket watch to calculate what proportion of a class slughorn actually spends teaching them stuff vs the time he spends divagating

pre-transition reg throwing a spell so that every time someone refers to him with his deadname he hears 'regulus' in his head. he doesn't use it at home, though

james enchanting his glasses so he can physically see a dark shadow near people who are not feeling okay, his little secret to helping everyone. also, sirius jokingly puts them on once and let's just say james isn't looking so bright

remus lending sirius one of his jumpers and casually mentioning that it's enchanted to always smell like him (sirius MELTS)

the valkyries sharing tips and spells to do their makeup, such as ways to make their mascara waterproof or their lipstick to stay on for a whole night

peter always carrying pieces of parchment with him to draw and document bugs he finds, as well as plants

sirius asking the rest of the marauders from time to time to let him be alone with remus in the shack the morning after a full moon. he just stays there to make remus feel better and hides with the cloak when madam pomfrey comes (i have so many ideas for this type of scenes)

lily using the map for her prefect rounds with remus and finding james and regulus making out in a corner of the castle, then screaming "I KNEW IT!"

peter sneaking out into the ravenclaw tower as wormtail to see gilderoy

boggart angst. like, sirius expecting to see his mother but he sees himself instead, dressed in his elegant black heir clothes, back straight, hair short, acting just like he is "supposed" to act, according to his family and still being HAPPY somehow (did he get it wrong? would he be better off if he had obeyed? would that have fixed all the things that are now wrong with him? ...who knows)

also, remus's boggart being greyback because i have so much of the plot planned around that its insane (thank you elaborate metaphors, thank you psychology classes)

peter deafening himself when he's annoyed & wants to sleep in study sessions, making a piece of parchment levitate over his head saying "wake me up when you stop snogging, you WHORES"

i know i have mentioned this before, but regulus using magic to hide the white streak in his hair. this is so important to me i swear to god

obviously, all members of the marauders & co. converting their silver jewellery and overall possessions into tin or steel as soon as they find out about remus

james getting distracted by having conversations with the paintings in the halls and being late to class (especially first and second year)

(from 4th year on) remus taking potions near the full moon, not just for the physical pain but also his temper. also, asking peter the spell he uses to go deaf (that man does NOT stand people the week of a full moon)

all of them somehow coming up with a spell that makes their records' lyrics mute so they can have a karaoke, this is so silly but so real (it was james' idea, too)

in one of their birthdays, making the candles impossible to blow—every time they are put out, the flame reappears. bonus points is the birthday boy's wish was something that will never happen in the fic, e.g. an impossible romance
