What Mando’a have you learned yet?

Heh I know I said on my rec list here that I remember 90 words and that was true at the time but because I take ages to reply to asks it's been a while, so let's see what I still remember now, I've mostly read clone wars fic lately, nothing with that much Mando'a...

Gonna try to structure this a bit to try and remember more. Also btw this is definitely just what I remember from what I've learned via fic reading osmosis, so take this with a grain of salt, for actual Mando'a knowledge there are a couple online dictionaries you could check out!

...I've spent 35 minutes trying to remember All The words xDxD fandom brainrot much lmao, why can't I get obsessed with like an actual useful language xD anyway lots of words below the cut, indeed over 90! Lots of words on weapons and family which tracks with Mandalorian culture xD but also a whole bunch of other random words!

There are a few ways you can do this. One way is to vary the lengths of your sentences. Use short sentences when you want quick beats or when you want a point to hit harder. Use longer sentences when you want a scene to feel slower.

Another way I avoid repetition is I make sure I'm not starting every sentence with the same subject. This can be difficult when you're talking about one character for a while, but if you balance how often you use the character's name and how often you use pronouns, it can be really helpful. Also, try to find other things to be the subject of sentences besides the character, this will help. Especially if you make an effort to use active sentences instead of passive sentences. For example, this is passive: "He walked into the dark of the night. He felt the wind caressing his face." This is active: "He walked into the dark of the night. The wind caressed his face." By using active sentence structure, we were able to use "wind" as the subject instead of "he" a second time, which automatically made it feel less repetitive.

Another piece of advice I would give is to use a variety of words. Pull out that thesaurus and find synonyms. There have been plenty of times when I realize I'm using the same word twice in the same sentence, or in the sentence directly after, but I need that word, or at least the meaning of that word, so I change one of them to a synonym.

Also, just be careful that even if you're using different words, you're not repeating the same idea over and over. Sometimes repeating a sentence or idea is done for effect and that's great. However, while editing other people's work, I often see them repeat an idea several times in a character's thoughts simply worded a bit differently each time. If it's a character trait we need to remember, it can be brought up more than once, but not multiple times in the same scene, spread it throughout the story.

Last, try reading your writing out loud, or highlight the text and have your phone read it for you. I suggest this anytime you're trying to edit your own work. Your brain is too smart for its own good and will often filter the errors for you. When you read it out loud or hear it read to you, you will find the stumbling blocks in your writing and be able to fix them.
