Exploring the Unique Culture of the Itawes People in Tuguegarao City
Tuguegarao City is known for its rich heritage, shaped by various ethnic groups. One of the most unique and culturally vibrant groups is the Itawes. Their traditions, language, and way of life have played a significant role in shaping the identity of Tuguegarao.
My Connection to the Itawes Culture
While I am not from Tuguegarao City, I take pride in my Itawes heritage and have always been fascinated by the traditions that define our people. I came from an Itawes family, where traditions are deeply valued. One of my favorite childhood memories is sitting with my grandparents as they told stories in Itawes dialect. Their tales were filled with wisdom, humor, and lessons about life. Even today, our family continues to practice customs that have been passed down for generations.
The Itawes Language and Traditions
The Itawes language is unique but has some similarities with Ibanag and Ilocano. Even though people mostly use mainstream languages now, many Itawes families still speak their dialect to keep their heritage alive.  One amazing tradition is pottery-making in Iguig. While Iguig is outside Tuguegarao, this craft is important to the Itawes people. Generations of artisans have passed down pottery-making skills, using special clay to create pots, stoves, and bricks.
Festivals and Celebrations
Since most Itawes people are Catholic, they love celebrating religious festivals. One of the biggest events in Cagayan is the Sambali Festival, where people wear colorful outfits, perform traditional dances, and show off local crafts. It’s a fun and meaningful way to honor their faith and bring families together.
Food and Daily Life
Itawes people love simple but delicious food! They grow rice, corn, root crops, and catch fresh fish from the river. A must-try dish in Tuguegarao is Pancit Batil-Patung, a tasty noodle dish that is always present at gatherings and celebrations.
Keeping the Culture Alive
Even though times are changing, the Itawes people still hold on to their traditions. By speaking their language, celebrating festivals, and practicing old customs, they make sure their heritage stays strong for future generations.
I'm proud to be part of the Itawes community, and I hope this blog helps more people appreciate our culture!

hi! question concerning mythology: are apolaki and liadlaw/adlaw the same god, or two completely different gods? i know liadlaw is visayan and i think that's cool as i am half-cebuano, but it seems that apolaki is the more well-known of the two. thanks for your help and all your work!
They are 2 different deities. Apo Laki is actually another name for Apung Sinukuan among the Kapampangan and the name that is used for the god of the sun and war across parts of Luzon. The deity under the name Apo Laki was known widely across Luzon from the Pangasinan, Sambali, most likely the Tagalog (the first and only reference to the Tagalog knowing Apo Laki was through anthropologist Felipe Jocano), and even all the way to the Bikol region.
As for Liadlaw and Adlaw (Li Adlaw for the Bisayans and Adlaw for the Bikolano), this was a different deity all together. There's no record of the sun god among the Bisayans and Bikolano being associated with war, unlike Apo Laki.
Li Adlaw or Adlaw between the Bikolano and Bisayans are the same deity, based on the creation myths for both (the one including the marriage of the sea goddess and daughter of Magwayan, Lidagat, and the wind god and son of Kaptan, Lihangin, and their 4 children who turned into the sun, moon, stars, and earth) which is essentially the same myth except the names of the deities differ between the 2 and in the Bikolano version, the sea goddess Dagat is the daughter of the sky god, Langit, and the wind god is the son of the sea deity, Tubigin. Also, the name the wing god in Bikolano version is names Paros. Also the Bisayan and Bikolano sun god is described to have a more happy go lucky personality than Apo Laki and less serious.
