“I didn’t think he’d actually get hurt,” Shirley said, her voice dripping with petulance, making Catherine feel more like a Headmistress rather than an PA.

Shirley looked accusingly at River sitting on the other side of the breakroom, his ankle propped on a chair, a bag of frozen peas doing its best to stave off any additional swelling. In true Slough House fashion, its best would likely be classified at below average at most.

“You left a banana peel on the floor outside his office,” Catherine said sternly. 

“I didn’t realise he was a fucking cartoon character.”

Catherine frowned. River was a bit of a magnet for disaster. If anyone would get hurt this way, it would be him. 

“It doesn’t matter, Shirley. When Jackson–”

“Lamb’s going to put me in for Employee of the Month for this,” Shirley interrupted. 

She wasn’t wrong. Catherine glanced at River, who did not seem to disagree either, offering only a noncommittal wobble of his head. 

“Shirley,” Catherine said as authoritatively as she could muster, given how ridiculous the situation was, even for Slough House. “Just apologise to River. Please.”

“Him first!”

“Shirley.”

“What? He ate my last banana. Again.”

“I did do that,” River admitted sheepishly. “I’m sorry. In my defence, I did think it was Roddy’s.”

Catherine looked pointedly at Dander now, waiting for her apology. When one wasn’t forthcoming, she cleared her throat. 

“Sorry,” Shirley mumbled. 

“I forgive you,” River said, shifting in his seat and wincing. 

Shirley rolled her eyes and turned from the room. 

“Cartwright, did what?” Lamb barked a too-excited laugh from the hallway. 

Catherine sighed as she put the kettle on. It was going to be a long day.
