252 pages (three days to read) first published 1979-12 Novelisation of the first movie (screenplay by Harold Livingstone), with the initial story by Alan Dead Foster. (I should rewatch the movie for a better comparison.)
One of the few Trek novels published before I was born, and (I think() the first by the Pocket Books imprint that had USA license for around 25 years 30 years until corporate restructure (still part of Simon & Schuster). The UK license for some of that span was Titan, which was the publisher of the copy I read.
Seems to follow the movie well enough, with the expected divergences due to wanting internal character monologues etc. And because of the author, a more sexualised narrative than the network/studio would allow on screen. Nothing explicit but it's a bit jarring to see mention of such compared to the implied issues in the movie. Also addresses the widely discussed Kirk/Spock relationship at the start in a way that seems character consistent to me, going by the perception of Kirk that's propagated for decades. Unneeded but fitting for Roddenberry and his hetero view of things.
Kirk was promoted after the five year mission and gets sent a message direct to an implanted chip in his head about a dangerous 'thing' in space, which is headed to Earth after easily destroying three Klingon ships. He gets command of the Enterprise, which is nearing the end of a refit so not in battle ready status. Most of the series crew are onboard, Spock went back to Vulcan in the interim.
Trip to the object with technical issues due to unfinished refit. Spock shows up and doesn't want to be a part of the group. Attempts at communication with the object in space. More background on how it came to be, compared to what the movie was able to show.
End of the book seems a little rushed compared to the movie? Two thirds of the book seems to correspond to half way through the movie? My expectation is that the publishing turn around required the author deciding earlier on things that weren't finalised on film the same way. (I've read indications that some of the Trek movies were still being finalised days before release.)
EDIT: I have watched the movie again, the differences can mostly be explained as being adaptation issues. Internal monologues don't work on screen; description of visual things is not required when just showing them on screen. I still think the proportions are different between formats, but not to the extent I initially thought. Some of which will be the extra time at the start with setting up the story in the book.

James Dixon was legend. There have been books that put episodes and movies, and sometimes even the novels into chronological order. But the James Dixon Fandom Star Trek Chronology #17 goes so much deeper. If a book has a throwaway reference to an event a few weeks before, it's in there. It covers every episode, movie or novel published up until the end of Enterprise's second season, as well as every technical publication whether officially licensed or not.

And here's where the first problem lies. According to modern Trek canon, Kirk is born in 2233 and his 5-year mission ended in 2270. But because unofficial fan published works had Kirk's birth in 2229 and the 5-year mission end in 2265, that's how it is in his chronology and that renders it questionable as a reference work. And since Star Trek: Enterprise did it's own thing ignoring decades of lore in novels and fanworks, it's labelled as an alternate timeline. In other words, obscure fan-published stuff (most of which was shut down by Paramount in the mid-90's, since it was profiting off of their IP) was given more weight than new Star Trek shows and movies.

And that brings us to the second problem: James Dixon's social interaction issues. He rants and raves A LOT in his Chronology notes. I originally thought it was satire, a parody of a crazy obsessed fan. But having spoken to him and seen his interactions with others, I realised it was 100% serious. He detailed how he'd like to kill me on a fake memorial page site he made to himself after I explained to him the real-life reasoning between Next Gen-era technical manuals contradicting TOS/classic movie era ones (it came down to money of course and who it went to). And after being banned from TrekBBS, he started the (now defunct) Terok Nor Promenade, where he was all the members.

His chronology is an amazing one-of-a-kind work, a loving tribute to Star Trek like none other, and the notes at the end engrossing and led me to things like the Best of Trek books and various fan-produced manuals I'd never heard of but now adore (and post many pages from on this tumblr). Something tells me the Kelvin movies, Discovery, Picard and Lower Decks would have given him a stroke.

The con after the con (post report and news!)
First of all, con attendees please check your Conline email for the Post-Con report!
Secondly,
Dear K/S friends,
Greetings! The KiScon newsletter is back – and will resume its monthly frequency to bring you all our announcements (events, fic fests, KiScon 2023 progress reports, and more news from the world of K/S) directly into your inbox.
1. KiScon 2022 – A short recap:
We made it through con farr and enjoyed every minute of it! It was an amazing and immersive weekend filled with many wonderful discussions and presentations, plot bunnies roaming freely, and the delights of fanworks shared among us.
We might not have been all together in a hotel for three days, but despite the virtual format and our dispersion throughout locations and timezones the con still defined a time and place for us, a happy bubble, and everything else around it, in that so-called real life out there, was not allowed to intrude much.
A detailed post-con report (pdf file) has been sent out by email to all registered members a few days ago; it includes a bunch of goodies to prolong the squee: the complete playlist of our vid shows, the Round Robin fic, fic recs, and links to several panel notes and presentations, as well as other important download links (e.g. for the con bag items) and info where you can find KiScon year-round. If you were registered for KiScon 2022, but have not received this email, please make sure to check the (fannish) email you used to register for KiScon, check your spam folder, and get in touch with us.
We've also contacted all winners of our competitions and all buyers and sellers from the auction.
Thank you to everyone who helped at KiScon 2022 in any way: thank you to all of our amazing volunteers and panelists, authors, artists, and vidders; thank you to all who created for and donated to the goodie bags; thank you to all who took part in the auction as buyer or seller, and especially to those who donated their proceeds to support KiScon or to charity; thank you to T’Uhura, Easy (MrsAtoz), and Herself_nyc aka NancyKay who sponsored the KiScon 2022 scholarships; and thank you to all who attended and made the con so much memorable fun. You’re the best!
2. KiScon 2023:
As already announced in the Closing Ceremony, KiScon will return for the weekend 3–5 Nov, 2023. Registration will open in January 2023. Stay tuned for the announcement!
This con will again be an online convention, but we are already working on a hybrid (in-person & online) format for 2024, and we are in negotiations with a hotel.
3. Upcoming Events:
Apart from these K/S-filled con weekends we will continue to host events (e.g. Pub Nights, but also competitions and fests) year-round. Our "KiScord" (KiScon Discord server) will stay open and active. There can never be enough K/S in one’s life.
Starting this week, there will be an online event every Saturday, with alternating Pub Nights and Viewing Parties.

Pub Night – The Afterglow
Aaand the Pub Nights are back! But we'll use Zoom instead of the Discord chat, for better audio and video quality.
Saturday, 26 Nov 2022 11:00 a.m. PST 01:00 p.m. CST 02:00 p.m. EST 07:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 20:00 CET

Cinema of Squee – TOS Viewing Party
Saturday, 3 Dec 2022 01:00 p.m. PST 03:00 p.m. CST 04:00 p.m. EST 09:00 p.m. GMT/UTC 22:00 CET
We are going to watch the two pilots: "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" (restored, unaired pilot version). This takes place on Zoom, much like our ST V viewing party at the end of KiScon.
4. K/S Advent Calendar:
The official deadline for K/S Advent Calendar submissions is in the past (with the exception of a few individual deadline extensions), and it enabled the mods to gather enough works to draw up the schedule for the gradual reveal throughout December. However, you can still submit works (fic, art, vids, podfic, even photos of crafted 3D-objects) to the collection until the end of the year, both as fill for a prompt and as extra work (for an explanation how adding a fanwork to a collection works, please see the FAQs and Rules section on the AO3 collection profile).
If there are works coming in very late in December, they will be revealed at the end of K/S Advent, as a kind of New Years Eve firework. Works coming in sooner will be added to the daily reveals. In any case, the collection will be closed to adding new works on 31 Dec, 2022, 11:59 a.m. UTC!
5. 01/26 Star Trek TOS S2
wuaaaaaaaahhhhhhhHHH this episode was...haha I dunno as a anthro major I was having complex feelings of “oh yeah that contemporarily emerging cultural-analysis trend -- lesser biased but still fledging deconstruction about othering other cultures and the understandings of the so-called custom in the 60s” and “OMG SPIRK IS SO FCKING RIO I JUST CANT”
I also noticed that both in this episode when Spock farewells T’Pau, and in the film ST Beyond where Spock 2.0 confronts the Vulcan science ministry board or whatever authority, the LLAP thing is presented in an unorthodox way: Spock’s reaction to the LLAP blessing from T’Pau is “neither” as he won’t live long nor prosper bc he killed a starfleet officer and his friend. In Beyond, Spock 2.0 is basically saying fuck you when he used LLAP to the bureau. Ofc in these days, at least for me before I started watching TOS and maybe for many new or non-hardcore audience, LLAP has been the iconic slogan of ST. Yet, when I finally dived into the ST world and saw all these scenes where ppl say LLAP, I realized, oh, so it’s not that simple. The whole discourse of using LLAP isn’t just patent and unvarying. (Unlike the commensurably famous May the force be with you in SW, where the salutation’s meaning and the related scenes convey roughly similar wishes. Sure each scene has nuances, but it’s generally for blessings and good wishes.) Whereas in ST, at least in these two scenes, the audience are given a chance to rethink about the whole discourse about using LLAP. It might not be a huge thing. Could be inadvertent. The production team just threw out all these scenes unconsciously, and the scenes themselves indicating all potentials and possibilities. But it does seem one of many ways to make the show more intellectually savory. Again, I might be over-reading into this -- not sure if its scriptwriters’ original or major intention, but the fact that I am writing this paragraph and such just didn’t occur to me when I was watching SW is a simple piece of evidence that at least there is a difference to me. I will pay more attention to this in future episodes. If it’s nah, then so be it. lol
--
The theme of this episode is “friend”. YESSSSSSSS
Kirk: I own him my life a dozen times over. Isn’t that worth a career? He’s my friend.
Spock: Kirk is my closet friend. (Also: Kirk and Doctor McCoy are not outworlders. They are my friends.)
ofc the scene below doesn’t came right after these two separate quotes, but I just found it quizzically proper to put it here. Just put it here.
The omniscient doctor KNOWS.
-
this, a great triangular composition:
-
EVERY time they touched the other’s hand (so far mostly it’s just Kirk grabbing or unthinkingly brushed Spock’s hand or arm...lol) my heart just clinched 😲
-
THE SMILE
--
This family land is glamorous. And Spock, coming from the prestigious Vulcanian clan who own it, divulges not a single bit. Very logical.
Spock to Stonn: you may later realize having is not as satisfying as wanting
Woahhhhhat dude why do you frustrate a young Vulcan man’s heart when it’s not necessary? lololololol and somehow it sounds a bit kinky given the context and his relation with Kirk. sorry but not sorry okay im a bit sorry

man. In monsters inc. nobody ever talks about the psychological effects from being a screamer and thinking that if get touched at all by kids it will kill you. You guys remember how they reacted to that sock?
The sock? They jumped on the guy and shaved him and decontaminated him for like half the movie and he was just happy to be alive

Theres a book i read in middle school and all I remember about it is that it was about dragons/wryms, it was written in the 70s, it had a green hardback, and part of the story had a cavern of dragon eggs and the main character placed their palm on one and it hatched and that's how the book ended
I've been dying to find it again

I have this mini headcanon that Carlisle is actually a permanent part of the volturi but hes like, a researcher kind of to see how long term effects of vegetarianism is in vampires, and that every decade or so he goes and hunts humans under the story of
-having alone time
-getting a new doctorate to stay current
-honnymoon (because esme is 100% with him)
-away from the teens
And I know that the volturi are never referred to as royal in anyway, but I want Carlisle to be visited by some vampire and referred to as "the 4th King"
Plus it would make his character that much more interesting. Like changing his main motivation from trying to be as human as vampires can be and having super empathy to being a revolutionary researcher who has the mental capacity to fool not only a mind reader, but also a girl who can see into the future
Or, everyone knows, but they keep it from edward only

Tumblr callout posts can really be some of the funniest posts on this website because you’ll have someone mixing legitimate accusations of innapropriate behavior with a relatively benign comment from several years ago and they’re treated with equal weight

Can people stop picking “gluten free” as the dietary request of choice to show that a character is annoying/wealthy/privileged/etc?
Not to start discourse, but there are a lot of other really stupid and UNNECESSARY diets to choose from

Why this exists
I'm intending to read through all the Star Trek novels I own (400 or so), in the order they were initially published. (Maybe even find library copies of those I don't own.) There won't be many beyond the turn of the century unless I get more invested than I'm expecting.
First part of each post, after the link to LibraryThing.com, will be three lines * Page count (and how long I took to read it) * First published (as best I know), most have a month as well as year indicated. I might check memoryalpha on occasion. * Where it comes in the ordering.
Some commentary should follow before the "Read More" - after which I'll provide some potentially spoiler filled story recap. There won't be a lot of either.
I don't intend to "rate" any of what I read. I have never felt inclined to rate books (or movies, etc.) Everything should be tagged "Star Trek novel" unless it's some sort of meta post (like this is). I'll also tag with the series and number, e.g. "ST: TOS 01", "ST: Voy Unnumbered", "ST: CT 1", etc.

Pike (TOS) the first episode of Star Trek brings us the first bed. A basic setup, a single. Square pillow. I guess it does the job but who would want to spend 5 years sleeping there?

Kirk (TOS) I strongly suspect this is Pike's bed with some shimmery fabric over it. It looks hard as a slab of concrete under that fabric, though. An iffy long pillow that would make sleeping on your side awkward. No blanket. 5 years of back pain guaranteed.

Kirk (TMP) here we have a bizarro bed/sofa hybrid (far right) Looks softer than his TOS bed, but trying to sleep with your head on that back rest will be a killer. And the storage above would make sitting on it like a sofa very awkward. Again, blankets do not seem to exist in the future.

Picard (TNG) a blanket!! But another weird and awkward looking long pillow. Resembles Kirk's TOS bed likely intentionally, but softer. Lovely windows but no curtains or blinds, so aliens with telescopes are free to watch what you do alone in your room.

Bashir (DS9) a thin mattress over a metal frame, looks like cheap shit. At least he has a blanket.

NX-01 (ENT) junior officers get bunk beds! They look functional and have pillows. Would not want to be sleeping in the top bunk when a space battle breaks out, though. Imagine waking up in mid air with the floor rushing at your face.

Uhura and Gaila's cadet dorm (ST'09) has very comfy looking very modern day-looking beds with proper pillows and storage underneath. The best so far, by far. Life on 23rd century Earth is lush.

Michael Burnham's bed (DSC) resembles a prison bunk, which was likely intentional considering her season one plotline. But! Proper pillow! Blanket!
Boimler, Mariner etc (LWD) Yikes. Officers get rooms with beds very similar to Picard's in Next Gen, but the lower deckers live in a hallway. Zero privacy. At least Uhura's similar cadet bunk in SNW has a sliding door to give her some alone time, even if it likely feels like she's in a coffin.

Pike (SNW) we end with a rebooted version of where we began, and this time Pike has the bed of a king. Proper pillows. Blankets. It's massive. Windows with blinds. The best Star Trek bed of all, could easily spend 5 years here.

Give us the unseen Phase II/TMP sets!
I can give you early engineering with a totally different warp core (some pics from Forgotten Trek)

And SOMEWHERE I have one rare photo of the Phase 2 corridor, which looks like an updated version of the TOS corridors and then had the hexagonal TMP/TNG ones built inside them. They were rediscovered in the late 90's when those corridors were dismantled for construction of the NX-01 sets for ST: Enterprise.
Also you've seen that concept art of the Phase 2 bridge where Kirk commands from a comfy sofa?

I'm 90% sure that sofa was built and appears in a season one TNG episode. I'm just not sure which one.
See that round tactical display where the weapons station would be in the early movies? That was originally going to have little models of ships in it, to depict space battles/chases/whatever on set rather than having expensive optical space effects. There are photos of tests out there somewhere, before the idea was ditched.
