Gong Lijiao is a 35 year old shotput athlete who won gold in the 2020 olympics in Tokyo (and has three olympic medals in total). She also has a record eight medals at the World Athletics Championships. She has fought super hard for her achievements and is such an amazing athlete overall. There is a lot of pressure for women to conform to gender roles and to be thin and feminine, even if they are world class athletes. Gong Lijiao was asked in an interview: "You used to be a masculine woman for the sake of shot-put. But moving forward, can you be yourself?". Doesn't this woman look like she IS herself?? She is completely in her element, she looks comfortable and confident. On her social media, she wears comfortable clothing and just seems happy and... HERSELF. Of course she was caught off guard by that comment in the interview. “If I don’t train later on, then maybe I will lose weight, and then get married and have kids,” she said. “The path one must walk in life.” Basically saying that yea.. if I don't succeed, I'll probably be forced to do that and not follow my dreams anymore. She was pushed further and asked if she had a boyfriend, what she was looking for in a boyfriend and if a male partner had to be able to beat her at arm wrestling. This is from a new york times article at the time: "One trending post stated that men were simply not good enough to marry Gong, adding: “Discourse about women isn’t limited to marriage and physical appearances. There are also dreams and success.” Gong responded to the post from her official Weibo account. “This completely says what I’m thinking!” she wrote. “Thank you!” And I will leave it at that!
