EIGHTH annual Fic Writers' Retreat, first held in Canada in 2016, coming once again in 2025.

Where: Five Oaks Retreat Centre, Paris, Ontario, Canada

What is it? Four days spent with other fic writers, from Canada, the United States, and anywhere else we can convince people to come from! There will be a mix of workshops (Topics TBA and open to suggestions), prompts and challenges, and plenty of independent writing time for your own personal projects.

It’s also an opportunity to make connections with people who share your interests and passions, and where you can focus on your own goals and creativity.

Cost (in CANADIAN DOLLARS): $480.00 

(approximately $350 US, €301 and ¥2,511.45, as of this posting)

Here’s what you get for it:

All meals (dinner Thursday to lunch Sunday)

Accommodation (Shared rooms but NOT shared beds - sorry)

Daily workshops and writing sessions (planned and delivered by participants - you too, if you want!)

A retreat in a beautiful riverside setting

WiFi included

Registration Process:

Select a payment option: a) e-transfer (Canadian residents only) or b) PayPal (link in registration form)

Make your deposit of $240 CAD (50% of total cost) to complete your registration

Second payment is due on July 10, 4 weeks before the retreat begins.

Space will be allocated on a first-come, first served basis. There are 22 spaces available, after which names will be placed on a waiting list (no payment will be required unless you are offered a spot).

Travel to the venue is not included. However, shared transport from Toronto (airport or other hubs) can often be arranged with other participants.

Several participants (and the organizer) live in the area, and we have always been able to arrange ride-shares from the Toronto Airport to the various venues. These connections will be arranged after registration.

My Mom had a bad fall/severe concussion that resulted in her hospitalization for almost 3 weeks before being discharged home unexpectedly without home care

This resulted in my moving home to take care of my mom for 24 hour care, My best friend/better half/roommate Bear agreed to move with me because we both were worried about her getting hurt/sick without anyone around

Bear (A Personal Support Worker) thankfully has stepped up to the plate to help me with Mom’s basic health, personal hygiene and cooking/laundry, however a new crisis has been uncovered; my mom has delinquency on both her water and property taxes probably due to her health issues

I, myself, am currently on medical health leave from work due to mental illness causing me to struggle in a professional work environment (su*cidal id*alation) and my decrease in income has made paying bills on time to be a struggl

I was unfortunately unaware of how my mom’s health had caused her bills to fall so far behind and with her delinquent in water and taxes, Im terrified of her losing her only home while her health is precarious at best right now

My mom’s phone has been disconnected after a battle with Bell and she was basically fleeced badly by them

My phone is the only active account between 4 people in this house; mom, bear and my brother and myself so it is used a lot and loosing it would be devastating

I’m trying to sell as much of my stuff as possible on kijiji to get some money scrapped together and get everything back on track but it’s not guaranteed until i have cash in hand

I’m currently accepting commissions on ko-fi to try and get some of my mother’s bill arrears paid up and dealt with before the new year as well as my phone partially covered so everything is more under control

We are currently at a rough estimate of $2.5k needed to try and square everyone away a bit

Hello everyone, thank you for taking a moment to read our story.

I am Hazem Shawish, and I am trying to save my family from this war.

We live in Gaza, where we face significant challenges due to the current situation.

My family consists of 11 members, including my mother, two daughters, four sons, and three children.

In the shadow of conflict, our family has faced unimaginable hardships. The passing of my father, a victim to the cruel grasp of hunger and inadequate healthcare, left a void in our lives, underscoring the fragility of our existence here. My brother, Samer, battles bipolar disorder, a condition exacerbated by the ongoing war and the severe shortage of essential medications. Without access to the necessary treatment, his life is at risk, and we live in constant fear for his well-being amidst the chaos that surrounds us. These personal tragedies have deepened the urgency of our situation.

Every day is a struggle for survival, and each night is filled with prayers for a brighter tomorrow. We hold onto hope, believing that one day the clouds will dissipate, and we will find the peace we long for.

Our home, which was a sanctuary for us, was destroyed, forcing us to live in a state of uncertainty and fear. We have lost the laughter of our children.

We also face psychological challenges, as we have lost our father, and my brother Samer, who needs expensive medical treatment, is facing imminent danger. My mother, who has endured so much, fears losing another child. We are all suffering from malnutrition and contaminated water.

We dream of moving to Egypt to find safety, where our children can pursue their education.

We seek your support as individuals who understand the value of compassion and community.

We all considered Khaled to be like an older brother to Ahmad. He was close to all of us, but he held a special place in Maryam’s heart she loved him dearly, and he loved her just as much.

Exactly one month ago and on the morning of April 3rd, Maryam asked my father if she could go visit Khaled. She missed him and wanted to play with the children her age in his neighborhood.He agreed. She went on her way, and not even a few minutes had passed before a missile struck the area she had just headed to.

In that moment, nothing else mattered to us but one question screaming in our mind : “Where’s Maryam? Is she okay?”

My father says..

I ran as fast as I could toward the site of the strike, my heart pounding in fear and panic.

When I arrived, I was shocked by the scene. Dozens of men were rushing around, carrying injured children. All of them every single one had blood covering their faces and severe injuries. I began shouting at the top of my lungs, “Maryam! Maryam! MARYAM!” until I saw her...

But my heart still wasn’t at peace. I couldn’t leave. I ran again this time toward the place I feared Khaled might have been.

With every step closer, my dread grew. “No... it can’t be him...” But when I arrived, I found Khaled’s house two stories high destroyed.

Khaled was there. After a long struggle, we managed to pull him from the rubble... but it was too late. Khaled had passed away.

Khaled is gone... and the world no longer feels the same. The earth is emptier now without Khaled.

The war has not only destroyed our lives; it has taken everything from us. Our home, which was once our refuge, is now a pile of rubble 🏚️.

My car, my only source of livelihood, was destroyed in a sudden strike 🚗, and the work that sustained us is now a distant memory 💼. Today, I live in an endless nightmare. Under a sun that burns everything in its path 🌞🔥, my family and I sit in a worn-out tent, a tent that shields us neither from the summer heat nor the winter cold ❄️. Insects 🦟 invade the place, diseases consume our bodies 🩺, and my younger siblings cry from hunger and thirst 🍞💧. We have no clean water or a crumb of bread to ease our hunger. My Siblings Are in Constant Suffering ⚰️ My brother Omar was unable to continue his studies due to the situation.
